How to Care for an Indoor Bonsai

By Sarah Duke

A bonsai plant is a striking reminder of a longstanding art. Because bonsai trees are so attractive, many people love to display them in their houses. You need to give your indoor bonsai some special attention since it's not able to benefit from direct sunshine and the effects of outdoor weather.

Despite their hardy appearance, some bonsai plants may be fragile when it comes to light and water.

When you bring a bonsai tree indoors it will require sufficient lighting to replace the natural sunlight that it would have been receiving outdoors. Your plant will also benefit if it is placed in a well ventilated area.

The frequency of watering your bonsai is dependent on the type of plant you have and the condition of its soil. There are some bonsai trees that require well watered soil, but others are able to survive with almost no moisture.

A bonsai plant will respond well to frequent misting as it soaks up the humidity. A humidity tray may be used but make sure that the pot is not exposed to the water but is instead on some pebbles or a stand.

The indoor bonsai tree will still need to be regularly pruned and cut to maintain its appearance. Just because bonsai plants look frozen in time does not mean that they do not grow. You need to repot your bonsai, whether it's indoors or out, every year to three years, depending on the variety. In addition, the branches must receive proper care so they keep their shape.

In the wintertime, you'll likely have to reduce fertilization, depending on the type of bonsai you have. The reason is that some bonsai varieties go dormant at this time and don't require as much nutrition as they do in the warm seasons. Your indoor bonsai might not fully experience the whole cycle of seasons because it is in an artificial environment.

Indoor bonsai trees also need to be checked for pests and other anomalies that may have appeared. The fact that they are indoors may make them a favorite of spiders and other mites who are used to the great outdoors. You need to use a soft brush or damp cloth to carefully clean the branches and leaves of an indoor bonsai.

Lighting Walkways and More With the Sun

By Keith Markensen

Solar spotlights are a great addition to any yard, and can serve a variety of purposes, from acting as a security light that will activate every night whether you're home or not, to a warm and comforting light that will shine softly down on your garden and make those night-time strolls through your backyard garden, or late evenings entertaining friends on your deck that much more memorable and ambient.

Solar lighting is a safe and easy way to light up a path, shine light on your pool for those late night swims or spotlight a particular spot of interest in your yard. They can be easily placed in any location and moved around with ease, unlike traditional lighting which is restricted by wires. These lights are also completely safe around water, as there's no electricity of any kind. In fact you can find numerous solar light products that can be set to float right alongside you in the water.

Solar lights come in a variety of styles and colors that can be used to match the unique aura that your area exhibits or to create that aura that you're looking for. You can truly get creative and mix and match different styles of lights with your outdoor decor, and since the lights are easily moved, there's no hassle in doing so. They will also more seamlessly blend into the environment without all the electrical wiring running amok all over the place like traditional lights require, or the expensive landscaping it would require to hide them under ground. They're completely safe to play near or with, and kids love to play around with small solar balls much like they do with sparklers, which brilliantly light up like beacons in the darkness.

As solar lights are exceedingly easy to set up, and affordable to purchase and maintain, it makes it easy to set up your home with the right light for each unique area of your yard. Perhaps you'd like a certain soft light to shine on your flag at night, and keep that memento of your homeland lit up at all times. Or perhaps you want to ensure your entire backyard is flooded with light, making it safe for your kids to play in the yard at night-time, especially useful during the shorter winter days, when children have very little day-light to play in. Get them off the couch or away from the computer and into your solar-illuminated yard.

You can even get creative and decorate your yard with different style or coloured lights like malibu landscape lighting depending on the season or holiday.

Solar light works by collecting and storing energy from the sun during the daytime, be it sunny or overcast. This energy is stored inside a battery for use when the sun drops. Best of all is the fact that they cost you nothing to keep that brilliant light shining, and do their small part to cut down on electricity use.

Your options are many, and how you decide to use solar light on your property will only be hindered by your own imagination.

The benefits of the right lawn care equipments

By Andrew Caxton

This article talks about some of the lawn care equipments that will transform the look of your lawn. According to the article, mulching mowers, irrigation systems and leaf blowers are indispensable lawn care equipments.

What is the secret behind having a beautiful and healthy lawn? The answer is very simple. The appropriate tools can make a heaven and hell difference between a great lawn and a lawn that does not look very good. For any equipment that you need, lawn care equipment centers will have different equipments of your choice. Thus, you can get diverse equipments if you approach a good equipment center.

Given below are details of some important tools for having a beautiful lawn. These tools will enhance the look of your lawn and the great thing is that they are not very expensive, either. Some of the tools mentioned here are listed as priority items on lawn care in equipment centers, but people tend to neglect these while buying the equipments.

If you get hold of a mulching mower, not only do you have a lawn that is free of weeds but also a lawn that is very amenable to the lawnmower. The benefit of mulching lawn mowers is that they reduce wastage of time. You do not have to worry about falling leaves or doing away with grass clippings with the help of mulching mowers. Add to this the fact that they are very user-friendly and easy in operating, and mulching mower becomes an indispensable part of your lawn maintenance.

Even though irrigation systems are very useful, the automated feature in these systems could work both ways. What you need to remember with these systems is that being automatic only shows that it has an inbuilt clock with the system, so you should not attribute any brains to it. Many a time, because it has been set on the automatic mode, lots of water gets wasted as the system does not sense the amount of water your lawn actually needs. So, what you need to do is to supervise the working of the irrigation system depending on the water needs of your lawn.

In addition to this, you have to see that the system is in good working condition. Broken heads or leaks lead to an unimaginable wastage of water and lead to the destruction of your lawn. So do not delay any repair procedures when it comes to your irrigation system. Buy the parts that need replacement as quickly as possible.

A multi-faceted lawn care equipment is the leaf blower. It is multi-faceted, since it is capable of handling so many different tasks in a lawn. With the help of a leaf blower, you can get rid of dead leaves in autumn and also blow away the snow in winter. It is also capable of sweeping your driveway. The only thing you have to consider is the noise factor, since large leaf blowers are very noisy. If you live in a place where people may object to the noise, you should re-consider your purchase of a leaf blower.

Even if you have decided on buying a leaf blower, be sure of what kind you want to buy. If you only face the problem of dry leaves, then a small electric one should be sufficient for you. However, if you have to contend with wet leaves, thick mulch and snow, then you should definitely opt for the large gas-powered machines. Whatever the case, leaf blower is one of the most useful tools and easily available at an landscape supply wholesale store, for maintaining your garden.

House Plants Gets Sick Too!

By Kent Higgins

A disease known as "damping off" is a common affliction suffered by plant seedlings in their transition to a new home. A good method to cut down on this is through the use of a sterilized starting mixture, which limits the appearance of this disease. If you notice any of your seedlings have been affected by this, you must remove and discard them to ensure it doesn't spread to other seedlings.

Another common bane of the average house plant is leaf mold, most commonly found on rubber plants and screw pines. This fungus will also spread if not contained, so affected leaves should be immediately removed and burned. If the disease has already spread too far there may be nothing left to throw out the plant, as it could very well lead to the disease affecting other nearby plants as well.

This rule applies in many instances. Pest infestation especially will often require you to throw away the entire plant. The effort to try and rid the plant of the pests and restore it to good health, coupled with the ever present risk of other plants becoming infected really makes this choice an easy one.

Of course this may certainly be a difficult decision, especially when the plant in question is one you've had for a long time, and has become as much a part of your decor as any other piece of furniture or decoration. The good news is that if the pests or disease have not spread overly much, you can still endeavor to save it. The plant should be moved to a new location, away from other plants while you try to bring it back to health. At least in this way you can be certain that no other plants will be infected should the threat continue to grow worse.

Pests, in the form of insects, are one of the most common forms of plant suffering. One of these is the aphid, an insect which usually inhabits the underside of leaves. They come in a variety of colors, which may be difficult to pick up when colored similarly to the leaves themselves. A good spray with water may be enough to remove them, and should be the first step taken in trying to do so. When that fails you can resort to a commercial insecticide instead.

Multiple sprayings will likely be necessary, after which point the remaining few may need to be taken off by hand. This can be accomplished by winding a wisp of cotton around the end of a toothpick and lightly dipping it in alcohol. This creation should easily remove the remaining few who proved resistant to the water or insecticide.

Another form of insects are scale insects, which con in a number of different shapes, sizes and colors. Plants most susceptible to these pests are ferns, ficus tree plant, citrus fruits, ivy and palms.

These hardy pests have a level of immunity to insecticides that makes other methods of removing them more viable. The toothpick method mentioned above is one of the better ways to get rid of these guys, as you'll be all but forced to remove them by hand one way or the other.

These are just a few of the many pests you may encounter when dealing with house plants. The most important thing is to always keep a watchful eye over your plants to make sure they're in good health, and take action immediately when anything seems to be awry.

Rattan Furniture: The Difference Lies In the Core

By Spencer Tang

Rattan furniture that is available in the market today can be considered one of the best because of its durability and quality. This wicker furniture requires little maintenance and can last for a very long time. Do you want to know some interesting facts about how rattan is made into the furniture you using right now?

Quite obviously, rattan furniture is made from rattan. It is a vine that looks like a bamboo, the difference being rattan having a solid core as compared to the hollow inside of bamboo. It is this solid core that makes it ideal for making furniture like tables and chairs. Rattan is one of nature's strongest woods available to man. They are also lightweight which makes very easy to transport and move around as furniture.

Rattan is a type of palm that usually can be found in Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. They have been known to grow to several feet in height. They are easily harvested using simple manual processes and can be a great substitute for other types of wood since rattan grows in a little span of time.

Rattan is bent and shaped to different furniture by heating them until they become soft and flexible enough to be molded. Once they get their desired form, it will stay that way permanently. Since rattan has anti-warping properties, you can bet that this type of furniture will really last for long.

Rattan's external skin is peeled and is used to create a unique weave design. This is how wicker furniture like rattan is made. It is this interlacing design that is called a wicker. The rattan pole is what is made as the furniture frame, and the wicker is what fills in the gap to complete it.

Rattan furniture can come in a wide variety of colors since rattan readily accepts paints and stains as with other types of wood. This makes matching your furniture with the color theme of your house easier. They would fit great whether outdoors in your patio, or indoors in your living room, dinning room, bedrooms and office.

Having rattan furniture in your home can give you a nature-themed look for your home. And that's usually good news for the eyes and your senses. It's just like having to relax in a hidden island paradise where you can enjoy serenity and peace.

For maintenance, furniture made from rattan only needs a little effort. Just a few strokes of dusting and wiping can easily bring back the new look of your furniture. For the wicker work, using a vacuum cleaner with a brush can get rid of the stubborn dust. Just remember that no matter how strong rattan furniture is, it cannot withstand the punishment of the sun's heat, neither being wet in the rain.

Rattan furniture can be relied upon for its unmatched quality and durability. In buying one, your best option is to visit a showroom on wicker furniture. This would give you a chance to examine and test a product before purchase. Nevertheless, online shopping is also a good choice since you get to browse a lot of stores and choose the ones that have the best designs, great packages and customer service. Contacting an expert on this field can also be helpful in making your choice.

Medicinal Herb Gardening Tips And Favorite Plants

By Lee Dobbins

There are few places that contain more scientific nonsense than in the advertisements for products that contain homeopathic medicinal herb medicines. Claims, almost miracle-like in nature, are made without properly being tested or even proven. Regardless, it is a fact that some herbs have been used to treat countless conditions for thousands of years and medicinal herb gardening has been done since antiquity. The following are some common herbs used for medicinal purposes:

Chamomile

Chamomile tea is available on various stores and mostly people buy it for its taste and flavor. But not many know that its origin is dried chamomile flower. This herb has many medicinal properties . It helps in reducing inflammation and its good for ulcers of stomach. as it is said to arrest ulcer causing bacteria. Though it has not been medically proved but use of chamomile herb in fever work wonders.

While it is not exactly the miracle cure it is often touted as being, and its pollen could cause an allergic reaction in some people, this chamomile is a safe herb for most to use.

Echinacea

An herb that has been the subject of many studies is Echinacea. It has been touted as an herb that aids the immune system. It has also been used to treat symptoms of colds such as respiratory problems. Despite its popularity, none of these claims have ever been fully proven to be true.

Some research suggests it can help shorten the duration of a cold as well as ease symptoms. Other studies show that it may lessen the frequency of contracting colds. Such claims are difficult to prove, because so many factors are in play when one catches a cold, but the herb is believed to be safe. At the very least, the herb may be a good placebo.

Before taking Echinacea, people who have diabetes should definitely look to the advice of a doctor.

Feverfew

Feverfew is a bushy perennial containing parthenolide and glycosides, active ingredients thought to aid in the relief from inflammation and migraines and was once very popular in medicinal herb gardening. Since feverfew is known to reduce the effectiveness of clotting, there could be some truth to the belief.

However, its use could result is some possible side effects. Mouth ulcers and skin inflammation have been known to occur. It has also been known to raise heart rate as well as reducing the body's ability to absorb iron and interacting with migraine medications.

Ginseng

Ginseng is another medicinal herb. This ancient herb dates back to use in China and India thousands of years ago. Studies show that it may lower blood sugar and increase HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

Ginseng has some noted negative side-effects. It has compounds that mimic estrogen and could be harmful to pregnant or breastfeeding women. With large quantities taken of ginseng, asthma attacks have been reported. Ginseng has been known to dangerously reduce blood sugar levels.

Before you try herbs to treat your own health, you should gather a lot of information and do your own research first. Lots of stories and opinions abound, and medicinal herbs have been used for a long time. But it's hard to get truly scientific, objective information. Be careful.

Medicinal herb gardening can be done easily at your home using pots or planting directly into the soil. They are as easy to care for as typical perennials and you reap the benefits of having a fresh homeopathic medicinal herb supply for a variety of home remedies.

Medieval Herbs

By Lee Dobbins

For millenniums, in all different cultures throughout the world, cultivating and reaping herbs has been performed. It was even considered a high art in medieval Europe. With the Greeks lacking medical know-how and technology, the Middle Ages relied heavily on Medieval herbs for medicines. The practice they used mixed knowledge through experience with balderdash, but they did know much that was well-grounded.

The Medieval herb garden was both beautiful and functional, providing herbs for medicinal purposes and cooking as well as a setting for calm reflection. These gardens have been reincarnated in New York's Cloisters. Constructed in the 1930's, it was carefully planned based on its Medieval predecessor. The result of the planners' attention to detail resulted in a stunning accomplishment of that goal.

The Cloister's many sections most notably feature herb gardens. In spite of New York's harsh frigid winters, humid and stifling summers, and unpredictable rainy Fall and Spring, over 250 species thrive there.

This was loosely based on many sources but does not follow any of them perfectly. This resulted in elevated beds, wattle fences and a central wellhead which are all common traits of any Medieval herb garden model. Encompassed by orchards and a number of other plants, the Medieval herbs form the centerpiece of the garden, which any home practitioner would be envious of.

Most are held in appropriate pots which resemble those often found during that period. They let herbalists bring more fragile ones in during winter, when New York temperatures dip well below zero Fahrenheit and snow is a common sight.

Medieval herbs were often used to keep evil spirits away or thought to have possessed magic powers, which was the case with dill. Rosemary was believed to prevent the plague, and sage was used to help epileptics.

At the Cloisters, herbs can be found placed in nine specific collections based on the original medieval groupings. The first group is for absinthe and thistles, while the second is dedicated to herbs used in medical applications, such as licorice or St. John's Wort. Aromatics such as lavender and lemon balm are in the third group.

Herbs have been categorized by their usefullness in art and other questionable purposes such as promoting Love and Marriage. Meadow Rue and 'magic' plants such as Herb Robert are good examples. There is also a category for herbs used in cooking such as Caraway, Fennel, Parsley and Borage.

Medieval herbs were used all over, maybe even more than today, but herbalists in these times still have the same plants available. We hear so much about the medicinal attributes of these herbs and these applications often go hand in hand with their medieval uses.

Floral Arrangements - Choosing The Right One

By Alex Morgan

There are available today many different floral arrangements, of all shapes and sizes which can be used in a wide variety of settings. As table decorations, wedding bouquets or fun party pieces, floral arrangements are a great way to express your feelings and create a very special atmosphere at an event. In addition floral arrangements can be designed for all tastes and budgets, small three bloom posies or exotic floral arches can equally express your individual style.

Whatever the occasion, all floral arrangements need the same kind of care and consideration if they are to remain at their best. Fresh flowers of course, last for a shorter period of time than artificial flowers and may require a little kinder handling. Many varieties of flowers will not tolerate extremes of temperature and need to be kept well watered and away from direct sunlight and artificial sources of heat. Artificial floral arrangements can last a lifetime if looked after properly and kept away from strong sunlight. Silk floral arrangements in particular are becoming very popular, since they can provide a very beautiful, natural looking display.

If you decide to design your own floral arrangements, it can be helpful to follow a few simple guidelines. Floral foam is often useful in creating a display as it enables you to place the flowers with greater precision and will keep your arrangement in place once finished. In general brown foam is used for artificial flowers and green for fresh. Bear in mind that the bottom of cut flower stems always need to be in contact with water if they are to remain fresh and so the foam needs to be thoroughly soaked in water before you begin your arranging and regularly topped up thereafter. For this reason also, it is inadvisable to re-use foam, as it will have holes from previous displays which could mean that the fresh flowers would be in an air pocket and unable to get water.

Cut flowers placed in a vase or the like need similar care. The length of such a floral arrangement can be extended by using a clean container and adding flower food. Before placing flowers in the display, remove any leaves which would be covered in water, as these will rot if left. For floral arrangements which you want to keep for a long period of time, such as those used to decorate the home, it is better to choose blooms which are in bud or half open and that way you will be able to enjoy seeing them open. For floral arrangements that need to be immediate in their impact, such as wedding displays you will need to use flowers which are in or near to full bloom.

Artificial floral arrangements need much less care than fresh, a gentle blast with the hairdryer to remove dust is about all that is required, but if creating an artificial display yourself, bear in mind that it may be necessary to weight the container with pebbles, shells etc (this will also cover the florist foam) and try to mould each flower and stem in the way it would naturally grow before placing it in your display.

For many people however the thought of creating their own floral arrangements is just too daunting, especially if it is for an important occasion such as a wedding or funeral, when time is at a premium and emotions are running high. The best option is to then employ a professional florist to design and create your special floral arrangement. Choosing the right florist can be a task in itself, but a little effort at this stage will ensure that your are much more satisfied with the results.

If you do decide to use a professional florist, have a look at examples of their work beforehand and see if you can find anything in the design and style that you would like; if not it may be better to look for someone else. Work with the florist in creating an arrangement that will fit in with the event that you are organizing. This is especially true of wedding arrangements which need to be in keeping with the general mood of the wedding, be that traditional, modern etc and also to draw attention to the bride and her dress.

Floral Arrangements - What Goes Where

By Alex Morgan

Floral arrangements come in a wide variety of designs and sizes and can be created to suit many different situations. Whether it be party floral decorations, table centerpieces or funeral sprays, floral arrangements provide a fantastic means of enhancing the mood of an occasion and expressing your feelings. Floral arrangements are flexible enough to cater for all styles and budgets, anything from elegant single blooms to extravagant floral arches, each one beautifully displaying your own style and creativity.

Regardless of the event, all floral arrangements need a similar level of care if they are to remain in optimum condition. Fresh flowers require gentler handling than artificial flowers and will last for a much shorter length of time. Many fresh flowers need to be kept well watered and in a position away from artificial sources of heat, direct sunlight and extremes of temperature. Artificial flowers are extremely long lasting if given a little bit of care and as such are becoming extremely popular, especially silk flowers which give a lovely, natural looking display.

There are some general rules to follow for those of you who want to create your own floral arrangements. First, it is often helpful to use florists foam when creating a display, since this will keep your blooms in position and allow for greater precision when designing. Green foam is for fresh flowers and brown for artificial. Fresh flower stems always need to be in touch with water, otherwise they will wilt, so it is important to soak the foam well before using and to regularly top up with fresh water. Sometimes cutting a small v shaped notch at the top of the foam can make the toping up easier, particularly if the foam is almost as large as the container it rests in. And, difficult as it may be, resist the urge to use foam again, as you could then be putting your fresh flower stems into old holes where the water will not be able to reach.

Cut fresh floral arrangements can be made to last longer if cared for properly. It pays to use a clean container and remove all leaves which will be below the level of the water. Using cut flower food really can extend the life of your display. For floral arrangements that you want to keep for a while, such as home decorations, choose flowers that are in bud or just half open and you will then be able to watch them open into full bloom. For those displays which require immediate, short term impact such as wedding floral arrangements or funeral sprays, use flowers which are almost fully open.

Artificial flowers need much less care and attention. A gentle blow of the hair drier will easily remove dust and keeping the display away from direct sunlight will prevent fading. However it might be helpful to consider the following if you are going to create your own artificial floral display. Since artificial flowers are quite light, you may well have to weight the bottom of the container, preferably with decorative items like shells, stones or sand, for a more permanent display, clear acrylic can be used. When arranging the individual flowers, try to think of how each one would naturally fall and shape it accordingly before adding it to your floral arrangement.

For many of us however the idea of creating a large floral arrangement, particularly if it is for an important event like a wedding or funeral, is a bit too nerve wrecking. In these situations it is advisable to use a professional florist, who will be able to create a beautiful floral arrangement to your unique specifications. The first step is choosing the right florist and this can often involve a little research on your part.

In our effort to provide data concerning the dangers that are associated with these devices, as well as some basic safety features that are important to the health and life of your child, we hope to help you gain the reassurance of determining if a product is safe before purchasing it for your child.

Dangers Associated With Stroller Use

There have been a number of stroller related injuries responded to in the years of 2004 to the year of 2007 by the 911 Response Team in just one community, according to Pediatric Emergency Care. The following statistics are indicated as a result of this particular study.

Of 241 different incidents involving shopping carts and strollers, there were 121 related directly to stroller use, during this study over approximately three and a half years.

The ages of the children that were involved in the stroller related injuries averaged between 0 months and 6 months of age.

Falls constituted the largest number of injuries, resulting in a percentage of 47.5% of all the cases.

59% of the injuries attributed to stroller related injuries resulted in injuries to the head area.

At least 18% of the children monitored also sustained an injury directly related to the facial area.

The local emergency treatment center received transport via ambulance of at least 77% of the children evaluated.

Fortunately there were no resulting deaths in this study. It is estimated that a little over 8% of all the children involved were hospitalized for further treatment and evaluation of their injuries.

It is believed that as parents become aware of steps to keep their children safe in their strollers, there will be less likelihood that injury or death will occur while employing the convenience of the stroller. Based on the information obtained from this study, medical professionals determined that education should be an emphasis when it comes to parents who implement them.

Taking Measures for Stroller Safety

If you have purchased a stroller, or you are considering purchasing a stroller, it is important that you know and understand the basic safety measures that you can take in this situation. The following details some effective strategies that have been found to enhance the safe use of strollers.

1. Fact: Strollers that are narrow tend to have the most complications when it comes to leaning and tipping over. It is essential to ensure that you purchase astroller that has a base that is relatively wide. This way, there is a reduced opportunity for tipping and accidental falls.

2. There are many situations in which parents may be tempted to hang things on the stroller handles, such as purses and diaper bags. It is important to avoid the temptation to do this. By doing so, you are presenting the possibility of causing the stroller to tip over and result in injury.

3. It is absolutely imperative that you use the seatbelt that is attached to the stroller at all times. This will add security to the device for the child.

4. It is equally important to use the wheel locking devices when the stroller is not in movement as it is to ensure that you take the time to use the device that locks the stroller into place while in use.

5. you should never leave the baby stroller unattended. It is when a child is left unattended that the most injuries occur.

6. It is important to ensure that you thoroughly check the stroller before and after each use to ensure that the parts are all secure - especially the seat area and the wheel area. If you find that any parts are loose, do not place your child in the unit prior to fixing these components; or purchase a new unit altogether.

7. Product recalls are issued on a regular basis due to safety issues, hence is is wise to always evaluate the product that you have to compare it to the product recalls. If you find that your stroller is listed, simply discard it or follow the appropriate instructions on the recall list.

Conclusion

While strollers can pose a danger to the children that are placed in them, they also offer a number of benefits to the parents. It is imperative to ensure that you learn as much as you can regarding what can happen, and how to prevent these situations from occurring. If you do this, it is almost a guarantee that your child will remain safe.

Floral Arrangements - What Goes Where

By Alex Morgan

There are many different types of floral arrangements which are designed to be used in wide variety of situations. From wedding bouquets to table center pieces and party floral decorations, floral arrangements are an excellent way to express your feelings and catch the mood of an event. Beautiful floral arrangements can be created to suit every style and budget, from simple single flower blooms to great floral sprays or arches, and each one can be unique reflecting your own personal style and flair.

To get the best out of your floral arrangements you need to care them a little care and attention. Fresh flowers in particular need careful consideration if they are to remain in prime condition and even with this they will obviously last for a much shorter time than artificial floral arrangements. Fresh flowers need to be well watered, positioned away from direct sunlight and protected from temperature extremes. Artificial floral arrangements can last a life time if they are looked after properly, and this has lead to their even increasingly popularity, especially silk flowers which are not only enduring and beautiful but also incredibly natural looking.

While artificial floral arrangements need a lot less attention than fresh, bear in mind that they will do better if placed away from direct sunlight; and a short blast of the hairdryer can easily remove dust. If you are designing your own artificial floral display, you may need to put heavy pebbles, sand or shells in the bottom to stop it from toppling over and these will also have the advantage of camouflaging the foam. To achieve a natural looking display, think of how a particular flower would move in the wild and mould each stem in that way before adding it to your arrangement.

Go Green: A Healthier Diet Promotes a Healthier Environment!

By Gail M. Davis

The term "Go Green" scares some people but it's all about making simple changes. You can change just a few things in your diet and make an impact on the environment at the same time! The goal is to use fewer resources without sacrificing convenience. A healthier you equals a healthier planet!

Planning is essential if you want to "Go Green". You'll need to shop carefully. Review the weekly grocery ads before creating a meal plan for the week. Make your shopping list at the same time. Shopping when you're hungry or tired leads to poor choices.

Use local, seasonal produce. This will help cut down on shipping costs and decrease our dependence on oil. In addition, you can feel good about supporting local farmers, the local economy, and eating the freshest produce available. Local produce may cost a little more but it will last longer and be better for your family. Try a vegetable that you've never had before and ask for healthy cooking tips.

The shipping, production, and feeding of cattle is very expensive. One study showed that it takes 4.8 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. Slowly introduce your family to vegetarian meals. Try meatless meals once or twice a week and gradually add more as your family realizes how flavorful they can be. Consider adding beans or tofu for protein.

Instead of choosing vegetables that are prepackaged in individually wrapped containers, choose your produce loose from bins. Don't buy prepackaged lettuce for your salads. Buy a head of lettuce and make your own. You'll be surprised how much fresher it tastes! Try out your farming skills. If you've never grown anything before, start small. Grow basil for pesto or mint for mojitos. If you don't have a big yard, plant in pots on your patio or deck. Tomatoes and peppers are just two vegetables that grow easily in pots.

Don't contribute to the bottled water craze just because it's convenient! Use a neoprene bottle and refill it at home. If you don't like the taste of your tap water, purchase a filter. 70 million plastic bottles are thrown away in this country each and every day. Sure, some are recycled, but not nearly enough. Just think of the money that can be saved if water isn't shipped from location to location!

Pack your lunch at home and take it to work with you. Buy a reusable lunch bag or box to save plastic and paper. Take silverware from home and replace it each night. You will save money and calories in addition to making an environmental impact. Research shows that 1.8 million tons of takeout containers and utensils end up in landfills.

So, if you want to "Go Green", use fewer resources, and lessen your environmental impact, consider these healthier lifestyle choices. Major changes aren't the only way to make an imprint. By following these very simple steps, you can make a big difference in the environment and in your diet!

Don't be Scared Give Your Plants a Shower

By Kent Higgins

Many varieties of indoor plants, such as tropical plants will require good amounts of sunlight and heat in their developing stages. These plants may be difficult to raise on one's own, and should be purchased in a more mature state unless the gardener has extensive knowledge and the means to properly raise them.

Ideally these plants should be obtained after the need for artificial heat is no longer necessary for their development. They will still need a good amount of heat after this point, but keeping them in a room with a fireplace or near another heat source will be enough to suffice. This coupled with a healthy dose of fresh air will serve to harden the foliage of the plant and prepare it for the conditions present in a heated and dry room.

Other plants however will have a more difficult time adjusting to an indoor environment, especially one that is well heated, and will be short-lived as a result. Many Christmas gift plants fall under this category such as Begonia Gloirc de Lorraine, Erica, Azalea and Primula Obconica. They plants are raised in a moist environment and cannot long withstand the shift to a dry, heated environment. For best results and longer life, keeping them in a room with more moisture such as a bathroom should keep them healthier for longer.

Most house plants function best in rooms that are neither too hot nor cold. Room temperature is good enough for most plants, though a few degrees below is perfect. Most should be kept away from any heat sources, as it will have the effect of the plant being in a much warmer environment. By the same token plants should not be kept in rooms that dip below 65 degrees Fahrenheit at any time. On cold night if the heat is turned down or off while you sleep, some rooms may become too cold for your house plants. Move them to the room that is likely to be the warmest during the night.

For larger plants like a Howea or Kentia that may be inconvenient or all but impossible to move, covering them with newspapers on cold nights should be enough to keep them in good shape.

On warm days it's a good idea to move your plants outdoors for a few hours and let them breathe in the air. Take this opportunity to spray the leaves down as well, which will cleanse them and remove any clinging dust particles. On days with warm, light showers you can also place your plants out in the open for a short time for this same effect. The leaves should block most of the rain from reaching the soil, but if it begins raining too heavily or the soil is taking on too much water, bring the plants back inside.

Vegetable Gardening - Indoor vs Outdoor Vegetable Gardening

By Dave Truman

There are many differences when it comes to growing vegetables either outdoors or indoors. Soil type and preparation, watering practice, light control, disease and pest control differ between the two environments. Be sure to learn about the pros and cons of each before deciding to plant your garden.

Preparing and maintaining the soil for outdoor vegetable gardening can be a major chore. Nutrients can be exhausted by yearly planting of the same crop. Fertilizers get leached away. Soil disease is more difficult to control. Breaking up clay or changing pH in a large area requires considerable effort. But you do save the effort of preparing multiple containers and changing them out.

Indoor soil preparation requires less fertilizer, but one has to be more careful to control the amount. Excess is more readily retained. The soil has to be prepared precisely in order to provide the right balance between drainage and moisture retention. Outdoor soil is much more self-regulating. More plants are killed by overwatering than underwatering.

It is more difficult to create an automatic watering system for indoor gardens. A simple drip irrigation system is easy to install for outdoor gardens. An automatic sprinkler system for indoors can be more expensive and messy. However, if you only have a few indoor gardening containers, watering by hand will get the job done.

Outdoor gardens usually have no problem receiving adequate sunlight. Outdoor gardens usually enjoy five or more hours of sunlight during the day. It can be more of challenge to find five or more hours of sunlight for indoor plants unless you want to keep moving them around to from window to window throughout the day, which is not realistic.

However finding shade for indoor plants is not a problem. On those hot days, you can simply close the window blinds to protect indoor plants. Also putting plants near a glass window provides a sort of greenhouse effect and promotes growth.

Diseases and pests can be a problem in either environment. But fighting them outdoors is decidedly harder. It requires constant vigilance and generally more chemical assistance. Fungi are more likely from moisture on the leaves during the night. Insects have easier access to lay eggs that become larvae.

Chemical controls, organic substances, and trap crops are not always the most pleasant controls. Most insecticides have harsh odors and even plant-based oils can be overpowering and more expensive than other types of chemical controls.

Both indoor and outdoor gardens have their pros and cons. You need to decide which type of garden would be easiest for you to maintain. Either type of garden requires some work but the end result of fresh vegetables is a great reward.

Foliage House Plants Who Needs Flowers?

By Thomas Fryd

If your space and schedule allow you to grow more than a couple of plants at one time, more likely than not, you'll be interested in non-flowering ornamentals as well as their showier counterparts. Even if they're not as flamboyant as their flowering cousins, they can be grown with ease, propagated simply and acclimated to almost any environment.

Quite often, foliage plants are the anchor in any indoor or outdoor garden. This is partly because they don't put all their energy into sexual reproduction and instead put on vegetative growth, sometimes year-round. Foliage plants are commonly available in hundreds of species and thousands of varieties.

Gardeners can chose nearly any leaf structure, leaf color, growth habit, height, width -- you name it! The plants described below will grow almost anywhere, and, consequently are also available almost anywhere.

Ficus elastica, or India Rubber Plant, is a very popular selection, though it does have its detractors. A healthy and well managed India Rubber Plant can almost fill a small room. The huge leaves -- sometimes almost a foot long -- are succulent and secrete a white juice. Rubber plants can be air layered when they get tall, or else they would take over their entire surroundings. While they do well in almost any climate, ficus plants love moisture but can be injured by over watering.

Another selection, Sansevieria, or Snake Plant, is a favorite as well. It thrives at room temperature and, if necessary, can grow in complete darkness. The leaves are mottled yellow and green with edges of brighter yellow, and they grow out of the thick stem. Sansevieria don't appreciate over watering either, but they're easily propagated from cuttings.

Both Tradescantia and another species called Zebrina are relatively unrelated plants that are commonly called Wandering Jew. Both plants have long, pointed narrow leaves, which are striped with white or yellow and grow from a succulent vine. The best way to display the Wandering Jew, especially Zebrina pendulata, is in a hanging basket, where it will thrive, though it can be grown almost anywhere else because it is so hardy, though it appreciates a warm, indoor climate. All Wandering Jews do flower, but the flowers are small and the plants are mainly kept for foliage.

Simple Herbs to Grow in Your New Herb Garden

By Sarah Duke

If you are just starting out an herb garden for the first time, you may not be sure which herbs are best for your garden. Well, there are many herbs that you can choose from; however, there are some that are a bit harder to grow. The following are a few great simple herbs that you can easily grow, even if you are a beginner.

Parsley - Parsley is easy to grow and has many uses. While it is a popular garnish found in many dishes, it is also excellent for curing bad breath. You can grow curly leaf and flat leaf parsley easily, and they grow wonderfully without you having to give them a whole lot of care. They do well in light shade and full sun, and they prefer moist, rich soil. Parsley doesn't do overly well in the heat, however.

Cilantro - Another simple herb to grow is cilantro. This is an annual herb that grows well both in the shade and the sun. You'll find that it is very easy to care for and it will do pretty well in just about any type of climate.

Chives - Chives are herbs that will grow in just about any conditions and almost any type of soil. In fact, they barely need any tending to grow. They prefer to have full sun on them, and rich soils make them do better. Chives have a wonderful flavor that is a bit like onions, and are excellent as a topping for baked potatoes. You can use them in a variety of different ways either dried or fresh.

Oregano - Oregano is a staple in most Italian cooking and is easy to grow. The leaves can be dried or they can be used fresh in any tomato dish. It is one of the easiest herbs to grow and can be grown in just about any area inside or outside. It should have soil that is well drained and also likes full sun, but it will even grow in soil that is rocky and poor.

Thyme - This is an herb that is perennial and easy to care for. It is very hardy and grows into a plant that is much like a shrub. It prefers a lot of sun and a warm climate to grow well, along with well drained but moist soil. If you are growing thyme in the house, you should make sure that you put the plant near the window so it gets the most sunlight.

Basil - This is another herb popular with Italian cooking and can easily be grown indoors. It does not take long for basil to grow and the leaves can even be eaten raw. It does well in many places, but for the best flavor, it needs to have conditions that are hot and dry. The soil should be very rich and a bit moist and it should be kept in full sun. Between waterings, the basil should have time to dry out.

Bay - Although it is a type of shrub, this is actually a very good herb for beginners to grow. It's hardy in zones 8-11, and is remarkably hardy in those zones. It needs full sun to light shade, and rich, well-drained soil. It will tolerate variations in conditions rather well. Just remember, bay leaves reach their full flavor when dry, so be sure to press them between layers of paper towels inside heavy books for a few weeks before you use them.

Remember to be careful about the zones. Although many of these herbs are hardy, they do much better when kept to their hardiness zones. As long as you grow them in the zones in which they do best, most of these herbs will be very easy to care for, and shouldn't need a whole lot of extra work to take care of them.

Kitchen and Apartment Plants Add to Home Dcor

By Thomas Fryd

Living in an apartment anywhere, you don't have room for a big garden outdoors but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy indoor plants in the rooms you spend most of your time in.

Gardening is available and possible for those who live in small apartments and in large apartments alike. You can have indoor plants near any window, in the kitchen, or in the living areas. You can even have moisture loving plants in the bathroom if you would like. if you don't have a lot of space on counters or on the window sills you can also use tables, or you can use hanging planters to make the most of your space. Don't forget the top of the fridge, there is room there in the kitchen for plants too!

Plants can live in just about any room of the apartment

No matter what type of apartment you have, you will find there are plants that will love your areas. If you have a very dry home, desert loving plants will love to be in your space. If you live near the ocean, think aquatic plants that don't have a problem with moisture in the air. When you live in an area where there is snow in the winter and long hot summers, think about plants that like the air to be about 50 - 85 degrees for your home.

If you are comfortable, often times the plant is too going to be comfortable in the surroundings. Learn more about the types of plants you want in your home by researching specific types online. Read up what the plant needs to survive, thrive and to grow the white bird of paradise is a great choice.

When using indoor plants to add to the dcor of your apartment, you can also think about adding flowers that are made of silk or that are dried to the pot. While this is going to add color, you don't have to worry about additional light or pollination needs of the plant. Small amounts of dried plants and flowers are also known for providing additional fragrance in the home, such as eucalyptus in a potted plant, the aroma is a very clean but strong smell that you might just love. Lavender is another fragrance that dried flowers are known to provide in the home.

Living in an apartment, you can place indoor plants on outdoor ledges during the summer months. Or you might want to consider putting your indoor plants out in planters that hang from the windows. Indoor plants do not have to be put outdoors at all in the summer months, but these are just suggestions that some people enjoy.

Place plants on tables in your bedroom, in the living room, or in hallways. You can use counter space in the kitchen or in the bathroom for plants, and you can use various tops of appliances or even televisions for placement of indoor plants for your apartment.

Benefits of Bach Flower Remedies

By Shannon Lloyd

Bach flower remedies are dilutions of flower material, which were developed by Edward Bach, an English physician and homeopath, in the 1930s. His discovery of the 38 flower remedies that are now commonly known as the Bach Flower Remedies was the culmination of a lifetimes work seeking to provide his patients with a simple form of medicine that would be available to everyone. Dr Bach believed the negative emotional state of a person would at some point manifest itself as a physical condition.

As soon as the emotional state is balanced the body is effective in healing itself and the physical conditions a person is suffering from often go on their own. After noticing that every patient to his clinic had some form of underlying emotional imbalance Dr Bach decided to devote himself to creating a natural system of healing emotional trauma.

Bach Flower Remedies help you to balance your thinking and change negativity to positivity. Bach Flower remedies can also be used in conjunction with other alternative therapies including supplements, homoeopathic medicines and physical therapies such as Acupuncture.

Each of the 38 original bach flower remedies is targeted at a particular emotional state such as loss, grief, bereavement, loneliness, despair, anxiety, panic attacks and lack of confidence. Bach flower remedies can be extremely good for helping us to deal with these emotional and mental states.

With a vision far ahead of his contemporaries, Br Bach believed that the true cause of illness and disease in humans lay in the mental and emotional patterns through which we view ourselves. Therefore we should try to address illness not only from a physical point of view but also a mental and emotional one.

Bach Flower Remedies can help you to restore harmony and balance enabling you to take control of your emotional state and most importantly they are totally natural remedies.

Bach Flower Remedies are a constant reminder of many ancient beliefs that we need to remember the connections of mind, body and soul and our spiritual origins.

Bach Flower Remedies can be used with other forms of therapy to boost health and well-being. Dr Edward Bach strongly believed that nature held the answer to restoring vitality, which could assist patients and enable them to be overcome emotional and mental states which in turn encourages physical healing.

Bach Flower Remedies can be taken by people of all ages and there is no danger of overdosing or side effects, should the wrong choice be made.

Users of Bach flower remedies often report significant improvements to both mental attitude and outlook, including an increase in motivation, clarity of thought, inner balance, confidence, peacefulness and energy.

Snap! Avoid Vacuum Cleaner Belt Breakages

By Kristina Brown

Is this a situation you have found yourself in before? Fifteen minutes till your family arrives for a special dinner you prepared, the last thing to do is vacuum the rugs when suddenly snap the belt broke and you do not have time to rectify the situation. Luckily if you follow a few simple tips this situation is easy to avoid. Although a vacuum cleaner belt is simply constructed of a simple band of rubber, there are many different sizes and types to accommodate the many vacuums found in households today.

One of the first things to look for when trying to fix a problem with a belt is to make sure that the belt is meant to work with your vacuum cleaner. Although belts are similar in construction, each vacuum cleaner belt is created in a way to work smoothly with a certain vacuum cleaner. Incorrect usage of a wrongly fitting belt will lead either to a broken belt, or even a broken vacuum.

To identify the proper belt for your machine simply look at your vacuum cleaner because select vacuum cleaners will list the belt number or style directly on the machine. If you cannot locate the belt number on the machine look toward your instruction manual for the belt number or look at the actual belt because the belt number may be printed directly on it.

Proper installation of your belt is essential for a properly functioning machine and preventing belt breakage. Remember when installing your vacuum belt that the belt goes over the motor spindle and over the brush roll. A large amount of tension will be felt when installing a belt. This tension is typical and required and without this tension the brush roll would not rotate properly.

A commonly asked question is why do vacuum belts break and what can I do to prevent this breakage? If my vacuum cleaner belt is breaking on a regular basis should I be concerned? Just because a vacuum cleaner belt is correctly installed does not mean that is immune from breaking. A number of things can cause belt breakage an example being worn out from repeated machine usage. Another instance which occurs more frequently is snagging, which is cause by running over the rim of a rug or a blanket. When situations such as this occur the belt gets stuck and overheated resulting in instantaneous breakage. Repetition of belt breakage because of this reason is more likely to occur if your vacuum is not a gear-driven belt system with electronic overload. Therefore, when buying your next vacuum, it is important to ask for a gear-driven belt system with electronic overload as this type of vacuum will severely cut down on the amount of belt breakages you receive.

To prevent belt breakage it is remember to keep a few things in mind while vacuuming. First check to see if you have correctly installed the belt into the machine, and secondly check to see that the type of belt is appropriate to you machine. After an initial check of the whether or not you have the proper belt you can begin vacuuming. While vacuuming it is important to remember not to run over anything that cause snagging. Snagging an item such as a towel, a blanket, the edge of a carpet, or even the vacuum cleaners power cord, will put you at great risk of instantly incinerating your vacuum cleaner belt. Another tip to remember is to regularly change your vacuum cleaner belt every 6 months. Over time a belt becomes more elastic, and loose around the brush roll, consequently the brush roll will no longer turn at the appropriate revolutions per minute. The vacuum cleaner belt being loose causes a to vacuum not to function at an optimal level and can be avoided if the belt is changed every 6 months.

When looking for a particular belt for you vacuum cleaner the amount of choices may be overwhelming. There is a tremendous amount of belts available ranging from flat belts, round belts and cogged belts. Round belts are mostly found on older vacuum cleaners that have a fan system. Cogged belts are found on vacuums that have a feature called 'electronic overload.' 'Electronic overload' is when a machine shuts down entirely when there is a snag, and the user has the ability to simply turn the machine on and off or reset the machine in order to start vacuuming again with a non-broken belt. Cogged belts are the best, as they break the least often due to their rsistance to snagging, and are found on vacuum cleaners such as Miele, Simplicity, Dyson, and Sebo. Another great feature of a cogged belt system is that because of its design you do not have to buy a belt every 6 months. A tremendous saver of annoyance this feature should be seriously considered when going out to buy your subsequent vacuum cleaner.

Vacuum cleaners break belts often for many people and now you understand why and how such problems can be avoided. Following these simple steps or buying a new vacuum cleaner with the proper belt system can help prevent vacuum cleaner belt breakage.

The Benefits Of Caring Properly For Your Houseplants

By Keith Markensen

You can bring life and color to your home's interior - and make the air you breathe cleaner -- by adding houseplants. Houseplants are relatively easy to grow; some species require only occasional watering and pruning. Many will thrive in relatively little outdoor light and require no fertilizer.

Growth rates vary widely from species to species. Some grow so quickly that you can notice a change from week to week, and some take years to grow in any noticeable way. To help your plants grow more vigorously, re-pot them often. While some grow so quickly they can split a clay pot, others become interior design staples because they remain relatively unchanged for years.

Different plants thrive at different times of the year, so it's relatively easy to find one that suits your schedule and decorating plan. However, a seifrizii or Bamboo palm can be used all year round. Some species come into full flower soon after the end of winter, while others bloom only in late summer, and there are many variations in between. If you choose your variety carefully, you can have displays of color for many months.

If you're looking for something a little more exotic, try carnivorous plants like the Venus Flytrap. They require more care but are frequently admired for their appearance and their dramatic differences from their more static plant relatives. They also dispose of those perpetually annoying flies that seem to find their way in.

No matter which type of houseplant you choose, realize that some care will be required. Though many plants resist insects and disease, nearly all of them are prone to some type of problem. Spider mites, aphids and other pests are easily eliminated by simply brushing the plant's leaves or applying a mild insecticide.

More plants are killed by poor watering practices than by pests, however. Over watering is mainly to blame, as many indoor garden enthusiasts make the mistake of adding moisture when the soil surface appears dry. A better idea is to find out how much water your particular plant needs and when and then adhering to this schedule.

Those who have mastered the basics of indoor plant care may want to move on to planting from seeds or cuttings. Because it's more involved than simply re-potting a plant bought from a nursery or garden center, growing one's own plants from scratch can be quite rewarding.

The first step to successful growing is to choose high-quality seeds or the right kinds of cuttings. Another critical step is to be sure you apply the right fertilizer at the right time to give your plant a strong start. Then place the fledgling plants in the sun and allow nature to do the rest.

Houseplants can perk up any space by bringing the beauty and life of the outdoors inside. If you invest just a small amount of time up front to learn to care for them properly, you'll reap the rewards for a long time to come.

Eschew Specious Plants When Planning a Garden Wedding

By Jerry Blackburn

The one time you do not want to see any specious flowers or plants is during a garden wedding. Even as it is true that wedding planners are notorious for their use of these fake flora in order to bring to the forefront a certain mood or ambiance, within the confines of a beautiful garden wedding, these kinds of decorations should be avoided.

At the very heart of a nature setting is of course the purity of the elements as well as the purity of the emotions it evokes. Unadulterated love is being celebrated at this kind of outdoor marriage celebration and the clean air, the scents of the flowers, and the gentle rustling of the breeze in the tree tops makes for the ideal backdrop to this kind of occasion.

As a wedding planner you wish to ensure to preserve the integrity of the nature theme while at the same time working within the confines of the budget concerns your client couple may have as well as the available locations. Another thing to consider when planning a garden wedding is of course the weather. While many understand that a November garden wedding is ill advised ? no matter where in the country you reside ? because of the possibility of inclement weather, it is also true that with a bit finesse you will be able to present the kind of venue to your clients that comes close to the garden without actually being located out of doors.

Make yourself aware of local venues related to horticulture. These may include private rooftop gardens, large greenhouses, municipal conservatories, an enclosed portion of an arboretum, and a host of other locales where the outdoors are conveniently moved inside. Of course, if the weather cooperates, then the perfect nature themed wedding will be the garden celebration during the late morning or early evening hours when the sunlight is soft and the flowers are opened.

If you are outdoors, ensure that a rented canopy or tent is at hand and may be unrolled within seconds to cover the bridal party and the guests in case of a rainstorm. Furthermore, the wise wedding planner knows the local fauna as well as flora, and will carry ant spray, wasp repellent and also mosquito candles as a matter of necessity during such weddings.

Integrate the color scheme of the venue where the nuptials are being held and ensure that the flowers you will see during the ceremony may have their likenesses found on the cake as well. Some couples may wish to incorporate animals into their themed wedding and while this may make for a stunning ambiance it is wise to discourage this notion. Children present may seek to interact with the animals in ways that are not appropriate and if the reception is to take place in the same venue, the possibility of the animals ingesting food they are not permitted to eat is great. It is best to rely on just flora and other props for ambiance.

The Art of Landscaping

By Harold Johnson

The arrangement an area which is pleasing to the eye of the homeowners and visitors is know as landscaping. Many forms of landscaping are not grouped into anything, but just the preferences of the person performing the work. Formal and informal are the two forms of landscaping that many people follow today.

Landscaping The Formal Design

One can see order from the landscape that has been made or is about to be made. This is known as the formal form of arranging a garden or any area. In order to bring out the features of the landscape the plants and flowers are carefully picked so they complement each other as well as the landscape they are planted on. Low hedges or low walls are used to separate flower beds in an orderly fashion in formal landscaping. Geometric shape and form are some of the formal garden desgn patterns used. Having a sort of order that is hard to miss is the spirit of formal landscaping.

Formal landscaping designs also include water structures as well as other stone or wooden structures. Since they add a touch of class and elegance Stone is a common medium used in formal gardens. Since the beauty and order of the formal garden needs to be seen in a larger picture, most formally landscaped gardens are large areas.

Informal Landscaping

Do not be fooled by the name as informal landscaping is actually not as easy as you might think. Even though there is a jumble of plants and landscape structures, there is a certain order in the jumble. When making and informal garden design many professional landscape designers also have to consider the area and the preferences of the homeowner. Letting the garden run its natural course with some guidance is the core of informal gardening. The gardener actually lets the garden have some semblance of disorder which is natural in nature by not doing any large scale pruning or trimming.

For those who wish to do it themselves landscaping can be a very interesting project. The actual process of planning the area to be landscaped as well as making the design which you will base on the lay of the land is a worthy project that a homeowner can tackle. Planning your garden or yard is extremely fun and after the entire landscaping project has been finished you will also enjoy maintaining your garden.

Vegetable Gardening - Tips for Success Even in Small Areas

By Sarah Duke

You don't have to have a huge vegetable garden that has many plants in it. Many people don't have a lot of space to have a big garden, but usually you can find at least a small area to have a vegetable garden if you have a bit of sunlight.

It is easy to grow a garden in a variety of different places, including in some planter pots on the porch or even on a small piece of ground in your tiny back yard. You see, the size of the garden is not what matters. However, the quality of your gardening will matter if you want plants that are thriving. Even if you have a small garden, it can be better than a large one if you work hard to make it grow.

Make sure that you plan out the garden you're creating to make sure you use all of the space available. Take a bit of time to do some research on the various plants you plan on growing in the garden as well. Figure out which ones are going to need special care, if some of them need more sunlight than others, and if there are some of your plants that won't grow well next to other types of plants.

Once you have a plan, it will help you place the plants in your garden, whether you are using planters or a small area of your backyard. You'll also need to research when you should plant each plant as well. There are some plants that need planted earlier than others.

You'll need to buy the seeds or plants that you are going to plant as well. Be sure that you have planters that are big enough if you are going to go with a pot garden. Some plants will need a bit more space for growing, so be sure that they are not too crowded.

Make sure you use top quality potting soil. Your plants could use the extra effort to provide them with the nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Your local gardening center can help you decide which soil would be best for you to use.

Even if you have a garden that is small, you may end up having a problem with insects on your plants. You have several options that will help you to take care of this problem.

Encouraging lizards, birds, and frogs in your garden can help, since they are predators of insects. Keep water nearby to attract these predators to your gardening area. Also, there are a variety of common household items that can help you keep insects at bay, including garlic, special soaps, and hot pepper.

Some types of soil for fertilizing have special ingredients that can help you keep the bugs at bay, so take the time to check this out. If you have to use a pesticide, make sure you don't use much. They can be harmful to kids and animals, so make sure you use as little as possible.

Every garden, no matter if it's big or small, needs to be nurtured. Stay on top of the weeds, aerate the soil once in awhile and water as often as needed. No garden will thrive without the proper care and nurturing from the gardener, so don't neglect them.

Even the small gardens can thrive and do well. So, if you just don't have enough room for a large garden, you can use the area you have to have a great garden, even in a small area. If you take care of the garden, you can get the healthy and beautiful plants you want.

Home Grown: Two Easy Grow and Care Houseplants

By Keith Markensen

If you plan to grow more than one or two plants at a time, chances are most of them will be foliage plants. Though they aren't as showy as the flower bearing varieties described in the last chapter, foliage plants can also be quite beautiful. In addition, they are simple to grow, easy to propagate and acclimate well to nearly any indoor environment.

Foliage plants are the backbone of every home garden. With few exceptions they know no seasons, growing and prospering throughout the year. Thousands of species of foliage plants are common and easy to find, and a large number of hybrids extends this variety even further. While planning your indoor garden you have almost an unlimited choice of plant size and shape, leaf form and colour. The two species described here will grow in any part of the country with equal ease and are available everywhere.

Peperomia sandersi is one commonly cultivated Peperomia. It has been called the Watermelon Begonia because the distinctive colour and striped pattern of its leaves resemble the watermelons found in the American south. As the leaves of this plant are smooth, shiny and oval-shaped and the stems are red or pink, how it acquired the nickname Begonia is a mystery.

Peperomia is a low growing, bushy plant with fleshy leaves and stems along with being an indoor house plant. Originally found in the jungles of Brazil, these plants like lots of warmth and humidity and dislike exposure to wind or even slight drafts. Place them in partial shade, being careful not to give them too much sun, and provide them with plenty of water and good quality plant food. To keep your Peperomia happy, give it only room-temperature water. Propagate it by stem or leaf cuttings, preferably in the spring when the growth rate is at a maximum.

Pick-a-back Plant, also known as Piggy Back Plant (or by its botanical name, Tolmiea menziesi), gets its name from the curious way that it propagates: new plantlets sprout from the joint where the leaf meets the stem on the parent plant. The pretty, heart-shaped leaves of this species are light green, delicate and grow at the end of long stems. Pick a-back Plant should be well watered and kept in only partial sun.

In its natural state the plantlets root as soon as they touch the ground, so propagation is simple: just place a new leaf-bearing plantlet in a starting mixture and allow it to root. If you prefer you can place the plantlets in water, but be sure to used purified water. A good way to do this is to treat it with dissolved charcoal. The Pick-a-back originates on our own West Coast, growing from California on up to Alaska.

How To Select the Ideal Father's Day Flowers

By Amy Nutt

Father's Day is a great time of year to celebrate how wonderful dad has been for all of these years. Mom gets her day, so it is only fair that dad gets his. The only dilemma is what to get dad for Father's Day. Mom gets candies, flowers, and other gifts and dad is usually the recipient of his one hundredth baseball cap or necktie. It is only fair to break the Father's Day gift monotony by doing something a little different that makes him feel as special as mom does on her special day.

To make dad feel special, try giving him the gift of nature, which is flowers. Some may feel that flowers are too feminine, but men love flowers too. The reason is because they have a pleasant fragrance, they look nice, and the emotions that are derived from receiving flowers are all positive. Even after they have been received, looking at them and knowing where they came from can make dad's day an even brighter one.

What kind to get

Men do have a softer side to them whether they admit it or not. There are plenty of men who enjoy gardening or buying fresh flowers for their homes. Simply hanging out at the local greenhouse will reveal this and these men are not shopping for their wives. They are men who know exactly what they want and exactly how they want their flower garden to look. When receiving Father's Day flowers, A smile will surely come over his face when he receives this expression of love. If in doubt as to which flower is the best flower to express that love, there are certain flowers that men tend to like. Some do enjoy roses because of what they represent, but there are other flowers that he may really enjoy.

Ideal Father's Day Flowers are:

- If dad likes roses, then white and red roses may be ideal. These are flowers that have a great deal of architecture to them and they are also the official flowers of Father's Day. However, it is typical that a white rose is worn on the lapel for a father who has passed away and a red rose for a father who is still living.

- To be a little different and stray away from the traditional flower, try something bold or something tropical. Anything with bold colors or a tropical flower really appeals to men. These are flowers that show strength and uniqueness. Dads are strong and these types of flowers last a long time, which makes them a great fathers day flowers gift.

- In terms of colors, anything that is red, orange, yellow, or purple with a linear design is really going to appeal to a man. There is something intelligent about a linear arrangement that men love.

- Contemporary arrangements are quite trendy and men enjoy those as well. One may opt for a mixture of flowers within a certain color theme. An individual may choose to buy dad a bouquet of red roses and yellow daisies.

A great gift idea

Flowers certainly make a great Father's Day gift. They can also be presented to him along with candies, balloons, and so much more. If it is tradition to give Dad that one hundredth baseball cap, give it to him with flowers. There are so many possibilities, especially in how flowers and gifts can be packaged together that it is hard to go wrong. Most importantly, dad will feel the appreciation and will always remember his bold and beautiful Father's Day gift.

Nature's Picasso - Designing with Indoor Floor Plants

By Keith Markensen

Indoor plants are going to thrive best when the temperatures are that of what your body likes. When your plants are cold they are going to die off, or they are going to grow slowly. There are plants that love the heat, and there are plants that do well in the shade and in the cold. Research the plants you want to purchase, to make sure they are going to fit what environment you live in, and work in. Find plants that will thrive and you will have find enjoyment in all that you see and do around your plants.

What you might not realize is that plants can be burned from the heat of the sun, burnt from the whipping of the wind, and they can freeze from the cold air. So, if you have indoor plants that you leave outdoors you should think of them just as you would your skin, for their protection and ultimate life span.

Fresh air is a quality that plants are going to add to your home, but at the same time, fresh air for the plants is something that indoor plants love to grow more and to produce additional leaves. If you were to put a plant in the middle of a smoke filled home, it is not going to thrive as it would in a home that was never on fire. Think about these topics when you are finding places for your plants in your home, apartment or in your life.

Large floor plants are wonderful for filling in all types of areas in your home but not the majesty palm. Do you have a wall or a corner that just looks really bare? Think about adding a tall floor plant that is going to fill in that space. You don'' ''''''''''''''''t need a shelf and you don'' ''''''''''''''''t need a nail, but you are going to fill in that space, and add color to the room at the same time.

To keep your floor plants living to their longest life span, you will want to consider temperatures of the area where you are placing the plant. When placing a plant near the radiator, you will find that the leaves are often times going to die off quickly because the radiator gives off high amounts of heat, more than the plant needs or can absorb. When you have hot air heat, avoid placing a floor plant near the register where the hot air will come up and burn off the leaves as well.

The same thought process is going to be important when you are considering putting your floor plants near areas where the air conditioning is going to come on. Air conditioning can come from window units, from registers in the ceiling and from registers in the floor or wall so you want to know where the cold air is going to hit if you are placing your plant near the air conditioning sources.

Fences - Beyond Landscape Beyond Privacy

By Kent Higgins

Fences serve a variety of purposes. They can be latticed as a simple boundary between areas or as a support for roses or other plants, or they can be closed to protect one from the elements or to act as a barrier for privacy. Fences can also come in a variety of materials depending on their use. The majority of fences are built from planks of wood, and are probably the most attractive and natural looking. Other fences may come in materials made from cement or corrugated sheet-metal, and these more effectively withstand the elements. These are usually erected in a lattice or zigzag pattern to better withstand the force of the wind.

The most prevalent ailment facing fences is rot at their base, as the base is most susceptible to both wet conditions, from pooling water, and dry conditions. Good forms of wood for withstanding rot include California redwood, southern cypress, white and red cedar, locust and chestnut wood. Additional steps can be taken to preserve wood from rot by coating or painting them with preservatives. These must penetrate the wood to be effective, and may require different products depending on the brand of wood used. A good preservative applied two to three times to any strip of unpainted, clean and dry wood should do an admirable job in protecting it.

Besides the base, another area susceptible to rot is any point at which two pieces are nailed together. Coating these areas before erecting the fence will prove more effective than simply coating the length of the fence afterwards.

Your fence posts will need to be set up deep into the earth, the depth of which will differ depending on the fence height and weight of the boards. Heavy posts should be set in concrete.

The most popular fences in common use are the white picket fence, the post-and-rail fence and the hurdle fence. With an increasing eye towards privacy, styles like the louvered and lattice fences are also gaining in use.

Post-and-rail fences are constructed from posts placed at 10 foot intervals, with 11 foot long tapered rails inserted into the posts. Hurdle fences have a braced frame with split rails along its length, with the end pieces from each panel making up the posts.

Picket fences, most commonly painted white, have posts spaced anywhere from 8 to 12 feet apart, with 3x4 inch rails and pickets two to three inches wide. The pickets should be raised at least two feet off the ground and extend beyond the top of the highest rail.

Board fences are ideal for privacy purposes, and can be slanted in a louver effect for even greater results in this regard. Board fences can be styled any number of ways, with alternating broad and thin boards, boards applied vertically, or even a staggering of the boards on the sides of the rail. This makes a nice backdrop for bromeliads.

Basket weave fences are made from thin, pliable boards, and also provide a good screen for privacy or a perfect background for planting.

A Guide to Mexican Cookery Techniques

By KC Kudra

Mexican foods, like many other foods, can be boiled, grilled, or fried. These are modern Mexican cooking styles but Mexican traditional cooking techniques were rather different.

In ancient times, Mexicans did not have ovens. Instead, they would cook Mexican food over an open fire, which was the most common out of all the Mexican traditional cooking techniques.

They would hold the foods in iron pots and pans. It cooked like how we grill our foods on the barbeque. Before the Spaniards introduced the iron pots, the Aztecs used to steam and boil foods in two-handled clay pots, which were called xoctli. The pot was filled with the food and heated over a fire. Frying foods was a popular way to cook. Many Mexican dishes still use this method.

It is a lot easier to cook Mexican food today than in was in the past. It takes less time both to prepare the food, because of superior cooking utensils, and to cook it. If you want to know how to cook Mexican food, there are various cooking methods, some of which were unknown in ancient Mexican times. If you want to make homemade tortillas, for example, you can use a flat-bottomed iron pan. Flan is a Mexican dessert, which is made in a spring form pan. Many years ago, the Mexicans had to make masa, which is a corn ground by hand. These days you can buy a metal grinder to do the work for you.

The oven is perfect for making many Mexican foods. It makes cooking vegetables and meats a snap. They can be placed in a pot of water with added spices and simmered for hours. Bigger steaming pots make tamales easier to cook. You can make many tamales and steam them all at once, making it very convenient. Tamales take a long time to make, so big pots are perfect.

Grilling on the barbeque is also a great way to taste authentic Mexican foods. Long ago foods were made this way and called Barbacoa. It consisted of steaming meat that was suspended over boiling water in a deep pit. Before steaming the meat, cactus and banana leaves were wrapped around it. These days, barbequing allows the spices and sauces to burst with flavor. It tastes similar to how the food once was cooked over open flames. Fajitas are great on the grill!

Mexicans many years ago used "metate y mano," which was a large tool with a concave surface, made from stone or lava rock. This utensil was used to mash the ingredients together. A "molcajete" is another ancient Mexican cooking tool, which translates as a mortar and pestle. You would learn about these ancient cooking tools in a Mexican cooking class, although we use different utensils today.

Cooking almost always requires stirring somewhere in the preparation. Wooden spoons have been around for many hundreds of years and are still widely used. There are different types of spoons today, depending on whether you are moving meat around in hot oil or stirring a thick sauce.

Mexican food has a rich history behind it. The methods might have been modernized, but the food is still traditional. Depending on how the foods are cooked, you will taste different flavors and textures. There are many Mexican dishes to cook and enjoy.

An aged cuban cigar is a great cigar

By Trevor Wallace

When Cuban cigars were first made available, they have exploded on to the scene. Yes their were times when things were a little slow, but they have always been steady. In 2008, we are seeing another era of the new generation discovering Cuban cigars. Why not? It's a good alternative to smoking as you never inhale and with Cuban cigars, you will always enjoy the best kind of tobacco available today. The complexity of the flavors involved and the pure dexterity of the Cuban cigar just can't be matched.

Yes it is somewhat of a mystery who discovered how to properly age Cuban cigars like fine wine and take the complexity to the next level, but lets just be happy that someone did. Don't worry as you don't always have to age your Cuban cigars. Cohiba cigars are already aged and Cuban cigars are good as soon as you open them. However, if you age your Cuban cigars even more, the taste is simply exquisite. Now when I say aging your cigars, I want you to store them away for at least two years or more. The more years they stay tucked away, the better your Cuban cigar will be. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait.

So just let them do their thing for a few years and watch them get even more amazing over the years. You will notice that the construction gets better and overall structure of your Cuban cigar. So how do age a Cuban cigar? Well by simply getting a humidor and placing them in their. A humidor is a square or rectangle shaped object that has the proper properties to help you age your cigar. The main thing here is temperature and the idea is to mimic the same temperature they have in Cuba. I guess you can say a humidor is like a mini Cuba in the comfort of your own home.

However, don't be disheartened because Cuban cigar humidors vary when it comes to prices and today they are very affordable. It all depends on what your needs are and how many Cuban cigars you smoke. If you smoke a few a month, get a portable humidor. This way your cigar travel with you and you can easily carry like 3 - 5 sticks. If you are looking for a humidor and a nice piece of furniture, than why not try a table humidor? Some of them are truly art pieces and will bring your existing living room to life. Plus with a table humidor, your Cuban cigars will always be ready for people who you want to show to like your friends and family.

If I were you, I would invest in a humidor immediately and store those precious stogies in them. Than I would leave that humidor somewhere safe, clean, away from water and in a cool place and let it do it's thing. It is recommended that you check up on it every once in a while just to make sure everything is working fine. I usually do it every two weeks or so. After that, or should I say after a few years, waiting for you will be some amazing Cuban cigars.

By Lucy Starling

Having flowers delivered to someone special is a wonderful way to show that you care. There are some things that you should look for when you are trying to find a florist to handle your business. Follow these tips and you will be sending a wonderful gift at a good price for you.

Unless you are in an emergency situation and need flowers immediately, you should take the time to shop around. Comparison shop with all of the florists that are online and in your local area to make sure that you are getting a competitive price. Even in emergency situations you should find out if you are paying an extra fee for the immediate delivery that you need. Online ordering is one of the easiest ways to get flowers delivered in a quick and efficient manner. You can order everything online and can even include a personal message from you included with the arrangement.

You might find that the flowers that you are able to order are limited according to the season. If the flowers are difficult for the florist to get for you, it might cost you a bit more money. Flowers will need to be the freshest possible so that they can withstand the delivery and arrive at your recipient's door looking as beautiful as they can. There are floral companies that specialize in cutting the flowers precisely when the orders are made. This gives you the flowers that are at their peak of freshness. Five Tips For Planting Roses

By Emma Collier

When spring is on its way and the ground is soft, it is the perfect time for planting roses. Roses have been a very popular bloom over the years, not only do they look good, but they smell wonderful too.

However, planting roses cannot be done just anywhere or in just any climate. They need special care and treatment. Here are some tips that you need to consider in order to successfully grow roses:

1. Roses need about four to six hours of sunlight everyday. It would be best to plant your roses in a clear area where there are not too many trees or other types of plants. The reason behind this is that the rose may lack sunlight exposure and the roots are also likely to become intertwined with the rose and throttle its growth. If you wish to replace an old rose bush, you should remove about 1 cubic feet of the old soil and replace it with new soil so that the newly planted rose will have fresh soil to start with.

2. When thinking about the position of your roses you must consider the type of rose you are planting. Place ramblers and climbers along trellises, fences and next to pergolas or arches. This is important to consider because they need space to grow freely and these positions are perfect for bigger blooming roses.

3. Roses will look good in island beds which can be mixed with perennials. Smaller roses make great edging plants, which are perfect for combining in front of taller species. Dig a hole large enough for the size of the root ball, but remember to loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole. You can also add bone meal which acts as a slow acting resource of phosphorus. This will help establish a healthy root growth for your roses.

4. You should be careful when considering the planting depth as this depends on your climate. If you live in a cooler climate, plant roses deeper, but if you wish to plant in a pot, you must dig about 1 inch deeper than the usual potted level.

5. Make sure that you place roses in the hole carefully. The hole should be refilled with soil so that the roots are covered completely. Before you make the final covering, water the rose. Then mound the soil about 8 inches high around the base of the plant. The earth will keep the stems from drying out until the plant is completely rooted. As the leaves open, you can remove the excess soil that surrounds the plant.

These some important tips you need to consider when planting roses. It will be worth the effort, as your roses will bloom beautifully.

Hydroponic Advanced

By Law Orozco

What is aeroponics? Aeroponics is classified as a hydroponic method where roots of the plants are continuously or discontinuously placed in an environment soaked with fine drops such as a mist or aerosol of nutrient solution.Hydroponics is simply gardening without soil. Soilless growing medias such as perlite/peat-lite or perlite/vermiculite or other combined mixes, have little of the nutrients that the plant would normally leach from the soil. In this respect, nutrient for the plant has to be added in water-soluble form. Hydroponic fertilizer is added to the water containing the minerals that the plant needs to sustain growth. There are many advantages and disadvantages to gardening indoors using hydroponics. Lets start off with some of the advantages: Growing hydroponically allows for bigger, healthier plants that usually grow faster and produce more fruit.

What is hydroponics? Hydroponics is commonly referred to as the cultivation of plants in water. However, study shows that various media can support the growth of the plant, so the definition was broadened to the cultivation of plants without soil.

What is pH, and how can I test for it? pH stands for Potential of Hydrogen and is the symbol for the hydrogen ion (H+) in liquids. pH has a range from 0 (acidic) -14 (alkaline), with 7 being neutral. For hydroponics we are aiming for a pH between 5.5 to 6.2 (slightly acidic); this is suitable for most hydroponic crops. For soil, we want the pH a little higher but still slightly acidic; around 6.0 to 6.5. Ensuring that the pH remains within this range will help maintain good plant health.Hydroponics, derived from the Greek words hydro (water) and ponos (labor); means ""water-working."" Basically hydroponics involves growing plants with their roots in solution alone or in an inert or non-reactive media; that is using no soil. The plants nutrition requirements are met through a liquid media or nutrient.Hydroponics is simply gardening without soil.

What equipment do I need to start growing hydroponic plants? Necessary equipment should be prepared before you can start hydroponics. The equipment can be purchased at most nurseries or garden centers.Yes, xeric plants are characterized by thriving in an extremely dry habitat. However, like any other plants, xeric plants such as cacti can also be cultivated using hydroponic systems.

What are the benefits of hydroponic gardening? If you have an issue with limited space for gardening, or poor soil where you would like to garden or maybe a short growing season, then hydroponic gardening is ideal for you. With hydroponic gardening you control the variables eliminating environmental factors like weather and pests. There are many advantages and disadvantages to gardening indoors using hydroponics. Lets start off with some of the advantages: Growing hydroponically allows for bigger, healthier plants that usually grow faster and produce more fruit. When growing indoors and using the proper lighting, most plants will go from seed to flower in as little as 3 months or less. Since you are growing indoors with the aid of artificial lighting, you can decide when to grow.

Are there any drawbacks to hydroponic gardening? Since we don't have a large, supportive root system, heavy fruiting crops like tomatoes and peppers may have to be trellised, depending on the hydroponic system used and variety. Root crops like carrots and potatoes present a special challenge as well, although while a bit more difficult to grow hydroponically, it can be done and with pretty spectacular results as well.pH stands for Potential of Hydrogen and is the symbol for the hydrogen ion (H+) in liquids. pH has a range from 0 (acidic) -14 (alkaline), with 7 being neutral. For hydroponics we are aiming for a pH between 5.5 to 6.2 (slightly acidic); this is suitable for most hydroponic crops. A Busy Bride's Easy Guide To Buying Wedding Flowers

By Lucy Starling

When you consider all that you have to accomplish when you are planning a wedding, anything that will help you get things done more conveniently will be greatly appreciated. Buying flowers for your wedding is one of the most important decisions that must be made. There are a couple of things that you can do to make the job a little easier.

There are some big decisions that need to be made before you select the right flowers. The first thing you will need to consider is the amount of flowers that you need. There are bouquets for the bridesmaids, the bridal bouquet, the flowers for the church and reception and finally the boutonni?res for the ushers. Part of your decision making process will include the details of the budget. You should have allocated a portion of your wedding budget to the purchase of flowers. Look at the flowers that will be in your price range. Now that you have your budget and a list of the flowers that you need, you are ready to begin searching for flowers.

You can get some great ideas online for the flowers that you will select for your wedding. Consider the colors that you are using in your wedding theme. This should be where you start.

Color is one of the considerations, but the shape of the flowers is also a big factor in the selection of your wedding flowers. There are some great unique shapes and colors that you can use for your wedding bouquet. You don't have to stick with the usual roses and lilies. Spice things up a bit with your bouquet.

Make a list of the flowers that you are interested in using in your bouquets and set up an appointment with several florists. Go in and discuss what you are interested in using for your bouquets and other flowers in your wedding. They will be able to tell you if the flowers are available for the particular time of year of your wedding date. There may be an additional charge for a hard to find flower.

Also discuss the centerpieces at your reception. If you are planning to use flowers in your centerpieces you should order them with the same florist. You should make sure that the flowers could be delivered in a timely manner so that everything can be set up at the reception and the church. You should also make sure that someone would be at the reception to put the flowers in your centerpieces.

When you are planning a wedding you must make sure that everything falls into place at precisely the right time.

Don't make any decisions until you have spoken with all of the florists on your list. You might find a better price or a florist that is more impressive with their display of artistry. Ask for references when you are interviewing the florists. You will want to make sure that they have a good reputation for quality flowers as well as showing up on time. Finding the right florist is as important as any of the other vendors for your wedding. And remember to have some fun. Choosing flowers can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. Even though you are stressed over the planning of your wedding, you can drink in the beauty and fragrance of the flowers in the shops and enjoy yourself. Buying flowers doesn't have to be a chore.

You can Breed Orchids Easily

By Charlie Reese

The Art Of Breeding Orchids

Breeding orchids can be a highly challenging endeavor. It needs a lot of patience because the orchid seeds are characteristically small and mortality rate of both the seeds and the sprouts are high. In the wild, new orchid plants grow relatively close to the original orchid. This is probably because the seeds of the original plant will have fallen somewhere close unless taken away by insects.

Since breeding orchids can be exhaustive and sometimes absolutely discouraging, many people and orchid enthusiasts prefer to raise and grow orchids by cutting them from the original roots or getting off shoots. Another way of obtaining a new orchid plant is to cut tubers from which visible roots have already grown.

Breeding Orchids For Variety

Some orchid enthusiasts like to experiment with growing new varieties of orchids; this is where breeding orchids manually come in. The tedious task of breeding orchids can also be very gratifying when you successfully manage to grow an orchid plant direct from a seed. The reason why people like breeding orchids this way is to create a new a variety of orchid plant. You can increase the size, color and hardiness of a plant by selective breeding. You can also create your very own kind of plant by breeding orchids or different kinds but which are compatible.

What To Do

The initial step to breeding orchids is to select an orchid plant. Collecting the pollen from the parent plants can be tricky because handling it is difficult. A thin sharp instrument can be used to collect pollen for breeding orchids. The individual must ensure that he will not touch or contaminate the pollen with any fungus or bacteria that can compromise the health of the seed. The pollen or seed must then be placed into the female plant where one must wait patiently for signs of fertilization.

The first signs of fertilization are when the flower wilts and then a bump will form at around the base of the flower. The flower will eventually drop off and should be settled in a moist area where drainage is best. The roots will then appear but not for several weeks in which time there is a risk of pests carrying off the fertilized flower or eating it up. Other orchids take as long as 18 months to several years before they bloom.

Breeding orchids can not actually be called a waste of time, especially considering the amount of failures that some breeders' experience, but you can call it a test of patience.

Indoor Plants Have Feelings Too

By Kent Higgins

While apartment or condo living may have its advantages, and is all but a necessity in packed major cities and congested areas, one of the major drawbacks for someone used to living in a house or similar structure, aside from the lack of space, is the lack of an outdoor patch of green to call their own. Gardeners especially, who would be more than content with just a tiny patch of soil to churn and care for will feel out of sorts cooped up in an apartment. Short of offering your gardening services to the landlord, what is one to do?

Your burning gardening desire can be sated somewhat by working on an indoor garden. Sure it's not quite the same as sitting on the soft earth with the hot sun beating down on your brow, but it beats the alternative, that being artificial plants or none at all.

There's nothing wrong with having one or more plants in every room, so you could certainly have a good deal of work and future gardening upkeep ahead of you if you wish. Plants will add a charming touch to every room, improve the air quality, and can even provide a different fragrance for each room, one suited to that particular room and its atmosphere.

Choosing which rooms to place specific plants in will always depend on the room's humidity, average temperature and amount of either direct or indirect sunlight. Be sure you in advance the kind of environment each plant on your radar will thrive in and place it in an appropriate environment. Apartments and condos will have rooms with largely similar environments, though full bathrooms will always be far more humid perfect for indoor plant care.

Beyond just plants, you can also get creative and add touches like dried plants or flowers to a room. Dried lavender for example provides a pleasant aroma that can last for weeks, and adds a unique look when tied in bunches and displayed.

Another unique touch is by adding a small herb garden to your kitchen. It may not quite make up for the lack of a vegetable garden, but it will add that perfect touch to your dishes and some will provide a nice aroma to your kitchen as well.

You have a lot of options when it comes to indoor gardening. It may slightly lack that connection with nature you get when gardening outdoors, but the process can be just as enjoyable and rewarding indoors.

African Violets Perfect For Indoor Life

By Kent Higgins

While the African violet is, indeed, from Africa, it's actually not a violet at all, but an herb called Gesneriaceae. The reason it came to be called a violet is because its deep purple blooms, though pink, blue and white blossoms are also common.

The plant got its botanical name, Saintpaulia, from Baron Walter von Saint Paul, who was the first to bring the plant from Africa to Europe in 1893. African violets have become enormously popular in the past decade, mainly because they are attractive, perfectly suited to indoor growing and produce flowers almost constantly.

African Violets are low-growing, hairy-leafed plants with dark green, oval-shaped leaves. More than one hundred varieties of African violets are known, some producing blooms as large as an inch and a half across.

Growing conditions - The reason African violets make such good houseplants is that they thrive in a warmer environment than most other indoor greenery, preferring temperatures ranging from 70 to 75 degrees during the day and 60 degrees or above at night. If your house is cooler than this on winter nights, you should protect your African violets by moving them away from windows or covering them with a newspaper.

Because they are accustomed to jungle conditions, African violets require a great deal of moisture. This may be achieved by placing the plants in a pan our saucer filled one inch deep with pebbles and covered with water that stops just below the pot. Another way to keep your plants humid is to place a bowl of water on a radiator near the flowers.

African Violets should be watered either from below unlike Bromeliad watering, or from above with a watering can with a long spout which will reach inside the foliage and wet the soil without splashing the leaves. If you splash cold water on the leaves, they can be afflicted with white spots on the leaves, one of the main problems encountered by African violet enthusiasts.

One way to avoid this problem is to only use warm or lukewarm water when watering your plant, and avoid the temptation to spray the leaves even with warm water. Another way to keep from splashing the leaves is to use a wick-watering system.

A benefit of African violets that makes them better suited to indoor growing than most other flowering plants is that they do not require much sunlight. Though the plants can succeed in a northern exposure, they do best when placed in an east- or west-facing window.

African violets do not require outdoor "plunging" in the summer, and they should never be placed outdoors. You can keep their leaves dust-free by cleaning them with a soft brush, such as a small, soft paintbrush.

Soil - African Violets like a soil richer in humus than the average plant requires. Special potting mixes made just for African violets are available at most garden centers. When potting your plant, make sure the soil is not too tightly packed, as African violets like well-aerated soils. And because they tolerate constant moisture at the roots better than most plants, they do well in a larger pot.

Food - While you're buying your soil, it's also a good idea to pick up a fertilizer made especially for African violets. Feed your plants according to label directions, and be sure to add fertilizer when you are re-potting or starting new plants from cuttings.

Propagation - Leaf-cutting is the most effective way to propagate African violets. Do it in the spring so cuttings will have all summer to grow. New leaves will appear on newly rooted plants within ten to twelve weeks, though some hardy plants will show foliage in four to six weeks. That means if you begin propagating in early Spring, you will have a flower Saintpaulia garden by fall.

Dividing plants is another propagation technique which is best done when the plant's crown becomes so thick that it stops flowering. To divide the roots, turn the pot upside down and carefully remove the soil from the roots, trying not to disturb them much. Next, use a gentle stream of tepid water to wash away the remaining dirt. Several segments, each with its own root, should be clearly visible at the base of the crown.

Gently pull them apart from the main plant and place them in appropriately-sized individual containers. Thoroughly water and fertilize the new plantings and place them in the shade for a few days before moving them to a window spot.

Pests and diseases - The worst enemies of African Violets are mealybugs and red spiders, but these pests are not commonly found inside homes. Should you encounter problems with them, though, there are special insecticides made just for African violets.

Vegetable Gardening - Organic and Inorganic Methods

By Dave Truman

Everywhere you turn nowadays, you see organic products being promoted. The grocery store is filled with organic items usually with a much higher price tag attached. Organic is marketed as being more environmentally safe. So naturally when planting a garden you want it to be more environmentally safe but there are also several traditional and commercial compounds that are safe and effective when used properly.

Manure is an excellent fertilizer in many applications. It provides a nitrogen rich additive to the soil that helps many vegetables thrive. But the odor, and to a degree the toxicity to humans, can be drawbacks. Bird droppings and other forms of animal waste often contain viruses and parasites that can be harmful to humans and other animals. Used properly, it's an excellent tool. But nature is not always benign. It must be handled with care.

Another excellent organic additive to liven up the soil is compost. Compost can be made from leftover food, straw, grass and leaves. However, be aware that these compost piles also attract insects that feed off of decaying matter and some wildlife that might enjoy the leftover food scraps.

Another popular method used among organic gardeners is the biological control of insects. Insects and pests are kept under control by introducing predators that eat the harmful insects but not the vegetables. This tactic reduces the need for artificial chemicals. However finding out which critters work best to eat the bugs and leave the tomatoes alone can take some time and research on your part.

Another form of biological control is to plant trap crops to lure insects away from the vegetables to sacrificial' plants. This type of biological control also reduces the need for artificial chemicals. But you have to make sure you have enough space in your garden for such plants. Not to mention that these plants will also take up your time, water, and fertilizer that could be used to grow more vegetables.

The argument can be made that chemical compounds used in many insecticides are somewhat natural in nature since they are obtained from natural sources. All chemicals produced artificially for gardening are derived from compounds found in the natural environment.

For example, pyrethrum is the base of one of the most popular insecticides used. It is used in wasp and other insect sprays. However, it is made from the blossoms of the pyrethrum flower. Nicotine is another natural organic chemical that is used in insecticides. However it is very ineffective in its use and toxic to humans, dogs and wild animals. Therefore it should be handled with the utmost care.

Natural, organic mulch is also a great soil protector. Leaves, wood chips, and other natural materials help retain moisture and ward off insect and weed invasions. The use of black plastic is also a good "artificial" mulch. It helps control weeds and won't harm the environment because it doesn't decay or give off toxins. It can even help with pest control by enhancing solar irradiation.

Whether you choose to use organic or inorganic gardening methods, it is important to remember that "natural" or "organic" doesn't always mean it is safe under all circumstances, so garden with care.

The Versatile Iron Deck Railings

By Adam Peters

The Versatile Iron Deck Railing

Deck railings are available in a variety of styles, colors and materials. For years wood has been the material of choice for decks and deck railings. With the many changing styles of homes, the styles of decks are changing as well. Although many decks are still being made with wood, railings are often made of a different material, such as an iron deck railing. Wrought iron deck railings are made in hundreds of exquisite designs by expert craftsmen to bring a look of elegance and class to your home.

Iron Railings Are the Perfect Choice For Your Deck

The wrought iron deck railing has risen in popularity in recent years as builders and home owners are keeping with the trends of the world. Iron has risen to become the most popular choice for deck railing material. This popularity is due to the many designs, colors and styles available as well as its strength and longevity. Iron railings are available in cast iron and wrought iron.

Cast iron railings are made by melting metal and then pouring it into molds to develop the shape or design desired. Wrought iron, on the other hand, is created by heating the iron until it's red hot. At this point, it becomes shaped into desired shapes by heavy pressure with a mechanical hammer. This process makes it extremely durable and strong as well as making it more rust resistant. For the purpose of deck railings, wrought iron is more popular than cast iron.

Multiple Advantages of Iron Railings

Although wrought iron railings may be created in a way to make them more rust resistant, they still need to be painted as a preventative measure against corrosion from moisture and weather conditions. You won't want to use any kind of paint, as there are specific paints that are made for wrought iron and will provide an attractive and very durable finish.

To get the most protection against rusting and corrosion, you may want to get wrought iron railings that have been painted with a factory-applied powder coated finish. This finish provided a complete coating down to every little pore of the iron. When wrought iron railings get the correct protection, they are far better for deck railings than vinyl, PVC and wood as well as having the longest life span.

Another advantage to iron railings is that they come in hundreds of shapes, designs and patterns to embellish the beauty of your deck and railings. Not only will wrought iron railings enhance the beauty of your deck but your home as well.

Wanted: Earth Tones Only Nature Provides

By Thomas Fryd

Blooming houseplants are a wonderful way to add colour to your home. They can be difficult to grow, but are worth the effort. When taken care of, many of the plants discussed here will bloom for long periods.

Two common varieties of Anthurium, the Tail Flower and Flamingo Flower, have long, narrow, shiny leaves and red buds. Arthuriums need well-drained soil (add sphagnum) and plenty of heat, humidity and watering. Keep in partial sun at an east or west window and propagate by seed or division. More on anthurium plant care here.

Beloperone guttata are called Shrimp Plants for the pinkish-brown bracts surrounding their clusters of purple-spotted white flowers. They require rich, well-fed soil, warmth and plenty of sun and watering. Spray several times a week and take cuttings in autumn or when the plant gets overly leggy.

The Bromeliad family has over a thousand species, many of which produce spectacular flowers. Like their cousin the pineapple they have hard, spiky leaves. Bromeliads will grow in moderate sun but won't prosper in a north window. They prefer 60-75 temperatures but tolerate variations. Use room temperature water when spraying or watering and avoid over-watering. Propagate by division.

With its lush, abundant flowers Cineraria is among the most beautiful houseplants. It should be kept cool and wilts if exposed to temperatures over 55. Propagate by seed but be warned: a practiced hand and greenhouse conditions are required. Cineraria are annuals and only bloom once.

Another beauty is the Cyclamen, whose masses of white, pink, or red flowers bloom above dense foliage. It should be kept humid at 60-70. Use warm (even hot) water, and water from the bottom. In winter reduce watering, keep cool and in good light. Repot in autumn, feeding it well until it blooms. Propagate from seed: it takes well over a year for new plants to flower.

Fuchsia likes it cooler than most of us keep our homes but otherwise its thick pink, red and purple flowers make it a perfect houseplant. Keep it well drained and in partial shade. In spring pinch its buds, water and spray it daily but avoid over watering in winter. Fuchsia is propagated by cuttings, and blooms all summer.

Heliotrope is grown mainly for its scent, though it bears tiny purple flowers. It likes warmth, direct sun and frequent spraying, but don't over water. Though Heliotrope is a perennial, treat it as an annual by propagating new stock yearly. Take cuttings in summer for late winter blooming, or propagate from seed.

lmpatiens blooms pink, red or purple through winter. Originally found in Zanzibar, Africa, its seedpod breaks at the slightest touch, resulting in nicknames like snap weed and touch-me-not. Keep in partial shade during summer but give it as much sun as possible in winter. Impatiens likes plenty of water and should not be over potted; it flowers better with confined roots. Sow seeds in spring, or root cuttings in early autumn.

Lantana is a perennial with red, orange or yellow flowers clustered above oval leaves. Grow at room temperature close to a sunny window. It flowers in late summer and early fall but will bloom in winter if pinched back, watered sparsely and kept at 60. Plant Lantana in your summer garden and propagate by slips and seeds.

Marica is known as the Apostle Plant because its leaves, up to two feet long, grow in clusters of twelve. In late winter its violet and white flowers bloom, drop and bloom again in a period of weeks. Marica needs good sun but give them partial shade in your summer garden. Propagate by division or rooting flower-bearing stalks.

Beautify your rooms

By Adam Peters

This article gives insight about the ways one has to go about beautifying the room. It talks about the contemporary, chic fashion and that of homes which are distinguished in terms of the though applied into the makeup of the interiors.

Even though large amount of money could be spent on upgrading your home, the thing that matters is the taste even if was a stately mansion, city flat or a cottage by sea. Individual attention must be paid to every small issue to obtain a distinguished home. Some of the most horrendous mistakes that one commits while making your room more noticeable is, while the walls are adorned with wonderful paintings and expensive tapestries, the floor is scattered with absurd collection of hired chairs which look atrocious. It has to be kept in mind that every room is unique and holds a certain promise in various situations of life. Fashions and trends may be in vogue for a while, but, the house which has been created with the principle of being distinguished will definitely be a fashion statement. Temporary schemes cannot guarantee a quality distinguished home.

The essence of background is an interesting topic. A single flower placed at a certain place would be more decorative than a dozen roses scattered around the room in the wrong vases and sight spoiling locations. It is certainly felt that a vase with or without flowers should add to the beauty to your room, it should be placed in such a manner that it vibes well and enhances the look of the room. A Venetian glass having a one rose stand could have a background of a green curtain, but surely not a photograph or other picture.

Flowers generally are more pleasing when put in a plain vase, either of pottery, glass, silver or porcelain. Even if the vase does have any decorations in color, then you should have flowers which are of the same color as the vase or possibly with the combination of shades of the color of the vase.

Towards enhancing the decorative effect of the tapestry which is not large for your space by one, two or three feet, you could frame it to match the dominating color a shade darker with a plain border of velvet or velveteen than what appears on the tapestry. It is a common rule that no adornment should ever be placed ahead a picture. This rule is excused when it is a large architectural picture whose aim is a decorative mural, it is an intentional backdrop like tapestries. It is similar to a statue or vase in a garden or park. You can also find the idea of landscape as background in portraits done by old masters. It is of utmost importance that you should not place any ornament in front of any picture to spoil the view of the definite composition in the tapestry or picture.

The significance of hiring a professionals to get an amazing lawn

By Andrew Caxton

This article informs the reader about how a lawn care professional can make a world of difference in looking after the lawn. It also mentions some of the qualities which a good lawn care professional should have to look after the lawn in the right spirit.

Your lawn has more meaning than the trees, grass or shrubs that are an integral part of the lawn. For any family, the lawn is almost like an investment of the family time and memories and who is better equipped to understand this than the professional lawn care serviceman? A lawn requires lots of dedication and effort to look healthy and beautiful, but the value any family sets store by is the time spent with the family in the lawn. When the kids are young, the lawn is an ideal playground and when they get older, the lawn still holds a lot of attraction as friends can be invited home for a lawn barbecue.

Thus, the lawn occupies a very important position in the family scheme of things and so it is very vital that a professional be hired to look after the lawn so that it can be maintained at an optimum level. A lawn care professional will truly empathize with the need of the family to spend quality time in the lawn. If a lawn has an unkempt and disorderly look, it practically gives the house an unoccupied and sad look and no one wants to spend time in such a lawn. In other words, if your want your house to have an inviting and appealing look, then the lawn has to be maintained in a attractive manner. Since many people in today's hectic world have very busy work schedules, looking after the lawn personally becomes very difficult and this is another reason a lawn care professional can be of great help. The services of a professional will be a bit expensive, but considering that the lawn is looked upon as an investment, the cost seems justified by the superior service you will receive.

A qualified lawn care professional who really knows his stuff is difficult to locate, but if you try hard enough there is no reason you won't find the right person. While selecting a professional for your lawn, there are certain things you need to check, though. Do make sure that the person has an impressive record and experience of maintaining lawns, is aware of environmental issues relating to the lawn, loves plants and is also endowed with a sense of decoration in respect to the lawn.

Respect for the environment is a great quality to have in a lawn care professional since it is a known fact that improper lawn care can seriously harm the environment. Thus, exerting a lot of care with regards to the chemicals we use in our lawn is an absolute must. Unless the lawn care professional understands this, he won't be particular about lawn care methods. So, it is very important to hire a lawn care professional who understands the significance of a healthy and clean artificial grass residential environment.

Traditional Mexican Food for a Healthy Heart

By KC Kudra

A lot of Americans consider Mexican food as being one of their favorite cuisines and many Americans consume Mexican food at least once a week. Mexican recipes are well loved throughout the United States but Americanized Mexican recipes and authentic Mexican recipes often differ greatly. Americans are fond of adding extra fat and super-sizing their portions. If you visit Mexico, you might not even find the same dishes because Americans have created their own versions of a lot of them. Traditional Mexican food contains a lot of fresh vegetables, vitamins, spices, and proteins, the portion sizes are smaller, and a lot less fat is added.

Healthy Mexican Food versus Unhealthy Mexican Fast Food

Healthy Mexican Food Ideas

Most traditional Mexican dishes have less fat and calories. This does not mean you cannot enjoy the foods served in American restaurants. You can add more healthy foods to the dish. Tomatoes are high in vitamins and have Lycopene, which has cancer-fighting properties.

Authentic Mexican dishes usually contain fewer calories and less fat. This does not mean you should not visit fast food restaurants or avoid Mexican food altogether but you should watch what you are eating. This means adding healthy ingredients to the Mexican dishes you prepare yourself. Tomatoes, for example, contain lycopene, which fights cancer, and also contain plenty of vitamins.

Tomatoes can be added to many Mexican dishes. Beans carry high protein and fiber. Instead of eating the beans refried, try getting them whole. It cuts back on the fat. Corn is another vegetable that is healthy in Mexican foods. It is high in vitamins and contains fiber. Adding these to your Mexican dishes will make them healthier than what you are served at Taco Bell.

So, do Mexicans eat healthily? Well, there are plenty of health food stores in America where we can buy healthy food alternatives and there are also health food stores in Mexico. In fact, over $500 million is spent on health foods yearly in Mexico. Not everybody can afford to pay more for health foods however.

Around five percent of Mexicans regularly buy and consume health foods, ranging from twenty to fifty in age and normally living in metropolitan areas. Mexicans who cannot afford health foods still eat a healthier diet than their American counterparts do. American food is often laden with fat and calories, which are bad for your body if consumed in excess. In addition, Mexican cooking methods vary and deep-frying is less common in Mexico than in the United States.

Mexican Food is Healthy - Food Pyramid

You are probably wondering again, is Mexican food healthy for me. Authentic Mexican dishes are, because they carry many vitamins and are generally low in fat. America has fattened up the Mexican dishes making them not a good choice. If you want to go out to eat, try avoiding the major Mexican food chain restaurants. Find a restaurant that serves authentic dishes. It is healthier and will taste even better knowing you are giving your body good foods.

Six Easy Tips On How To Care For Your Plants

By Rob Pike

Many people worry a lot when it comes to caring for their plants. When talking about house plants, there is absolutely no need to worry. There are just a few things you need to consider.

1. Watering

A watering can is a must-have in every garden. It is recommended that you purchase the one with a narrow spout to ensure adequate watering. But that does not always apply, so the finger test may come in handy. Insert your index finger up to the first joint into the soil. If you feel that the soil is damp, don't water it. Otherwise, do.

2. Feeding

With foliage plants, they always need to be high in nitrogen. For flowering plants, on the other hand, K2O is needed. Fertilizers such as the slow release ones can be mixed with the compost. However, some plants like cacti and orchids need special feeds. Feed plants on the height of their active growth.

3. Lighting

Plants like Sanseveria and Aspidistra require no shade. They can be placed away from a window. Spider plants need semi-shade. You can put plants like these near a window that does or does not get sunlight. Others need sun or no sun at all like cheeseplants.

4. Temperature

With houseplants, they can survive in temperatures a little bit higher than 15 - 250 C or 55 - 750 F. But drastic fluctuations of temperature may not be good for them.

5. Humidity

Some houseplants require a humid environment. One tip to maximize humidity is to put the pot inside a larger pot and fill in the gaps with stones or compost to keep in the moisture. The compost will not dry out. Plants are capable of creating their own climate if grouped together. This tip can also be used for keeping the soil moist. If you want, you can spray them with water once or twice a day depending on the day's temperature.

6. Repotting and Potting On

Other plants require repotting for optimum growth but some plants may not be suitable for this idea. They would not want their roots to be disturbed or other plants' root system is small. One way to check if your plant needs repotting is to turn it upside down. Tap the pot to release the plant and check its roots. If roots are all you see, then repot.

You just need to have a little care for your plants and in turn, you'll reap its benefits. You don't only have a garden that can add to your house's beauty you can also learn how to respect and nurture life in its varied forms.

Steps To A Better Lawn And Garden

By Emma Collier

Your lawn and garden should be a source of pride and beauty. You don't need to spend lots of money on expensive items. A little commonsense and planning can go a long way in any garden.

If you're lucky enough to have a lawn with a good topsoil base, much of the hard work of keeping a lawn beautiful is already done for you. But many of us do not have this luxury, and besides, even with a good topsoil base, you still have to work hard to keep a beautiful lawn and garden.

1. The best time to mow a lawn is when it is cool and dry. Wait for the morning dew to dry off, and before the afternoon heat takes hold. Alternatively, late afternoon or early evening following a watering in the morning is also a good time.

2. A hedge is a much better boundary divider than a fence. It will provide better privacy and keep pets and children in - or out. It will attract birds to its shelter, and provide a great backdrop for plants and flowers.

3. Bring the beauty of your garden to you; plant hyacinths near walkways and doors. Their magnificent perfume will swamp the spring air and make your garden really come alive.

4. Add your garden to non-garden items, such a lampposts and mail boxes. Surround these items with flowers planted to take advantage of the earliest to the latest flowerings. You could have white snowdrops, purple and gold crocus, blue hyacinths, and various colored tulips. You could also surround the posts with rocks to provide added interest.

5. Simple, but effective weed control can be achieved on your lawn by mowing often during spring. This will prevent dandelions spreading by eliminating the yellow blossoms and preventing seed formation. Mow high during late spring and early summer. This will allow grass blades to shade the ground, and will help prevent crabgrass from sprouting.

Your lawn and garden should be a source of pride and beauty. You don't need to spend lots of money on expensive fertilizers and herbicides, or fancy lawn furniture and ornaments. A little commonsense and planning can go a long way to making your lawn and garden a much better place.

Vegetable Gardening - Preparation for Planting

By Dave Truman

Once you've decided which vegetables you want to plant and where, there is still a little bit of preparation to complete before planting. To make a good garden you must have good soil.

The Soil

To make a good garden you must have good soil. All vegetables get water and nutrients from soil. Sometimes the ground won't already have the needed compounds. In others, previous plantings over many years will have depleted them. Either circumstance can easily be remedied with a few simple actions.

First, know what you're starting with. The best way to find out is to purchase an inexpensive soil testing kit. These easy-to-perform chemical tests will provide accurate information on nutrient levels, pH and other helpful data. For more accurate tests, you can seek out the local Extension Office of a university. They often work with local planters to provide information about the environment, including soil composition.

pH levels can be adjusted by adding of small amounts of sulfur or lime. Some plants prefer earth that is slightly alkaline (basic), others do better in slightly acidic soil. A garden underneath a pine tree, for example, will tend to be slightly acidic because the needles that fall give a small amount of acid to the dirt. A medium level is best for most vegetables, with a pH between 6.0-6.5.

There is some mechanical preparation to be done as well. Depending on the soil type you have - very clay like, sandy, sandy loam or a mixture - you may need to do more or less tilling. Rototillers can be rented. If you have a large area that you'll replant year after year it may be worthwhile to endure the one time expense and buy one, however. You'll use it more often than you suspect.

The soil needs to be aerated and turned to provide oxygen and the right mechanical support balanced with the right degree of freedom for the roots to spread. Very compact soil makes it difficult for nutrients and water to flow and drain. It keeps roots from moving down to reach lower water levels and provide stronger support against wind.

Weeds

Any weeds present should be dealt with at this time. The more you do now, the less you need to do later. Many won't appear but will have seeds present ready to sprout after you plant. A soil preparation mixture that prevents weeds from starting is a good idea. It's much easier to apply before you plant your vegetables and it won't harm them once you do. They're designed to kill weeds, but not other plants.

You might want to lay down a weed control fabric before planting. That creates a cover that makes it more difficult for weeds to develop, by denying them sunlight. It also provides a physical barrier that makes it harder for them to rise up.

Other Pests

Now is also a good time to attack insects, bacteria and other things that will eat your vegetable plants later. Some organisms are helpful. Milky spores, for example, are bacteria that interrupt the growth cycle of the Japanese beetle larvae. As they develop they eat roots. Laying down the appropriate mixture of pesticides can be safe and effective and will cover a wide range of potentials pests. Preventing a small problem is always easier than solving a larger one later.

Solar Yard Lights: Good For The Planet and Your Budget!

By Ryan McCall

It's not only ecologically sensible and popular to use alternative energy sources for a great many purposes, it can be a real money saver and even an answer to some technical problems. Solar yard lights are one such use that can benefit many people, some of whom may not have previously even thought about solar powered outdoor lighting options.

Landscape lights have several uses. Not only do they make yards attractive and enjoyable, but these lights heighten visibility to create a safer atmosphere. By lighting yards or building exteriors, you can both discourage potential intruders and make your driveways or walkways better lighted, and thus safer. Other, more aesthetic benefits include using lighting to display garden items like statuaries, fountains, and special plants.

There are many advantages that come from lighting your yard with solar powered lights. The most obvious is that every bit of electricity required to light your yard will add to your electric bill, and solar-powered lights consume no electricity. Many years ago, expensive solar lights redeemed themselves over several years by saving homeowners money. Now, however, solar-powered lights are no more expensive than conventional electric lights. Once your solar light is installed, you will never pay another cent to use it until it is time for the light to be replaced.

Another advantage for using solar power is the simplicity and lack of hassle installing such devices. Once you determine that a site gets some sun, you simply attach the light or sink a pole or support and you are done, unless you need to flip a switch. Solar lights will collect energy all day stored in batteries and work without any special wiring. By contrast, some traditional lighting even requires the expense of an electrician, and hiding and protecting the wiring is another issue.

The main drawback of having solar yard lights in a completely shady area of your yard is that they may not charge or even work properly. Check with a landscaping professional or with stores that sell solar lighting about the optimum locations for placement on your property. With advances in batteries and storage devices along with the solar cells themselves their requirements are easier to meet and will likely to continue improving.

Another area of concern is how long a fully charged light will function, and how much time you will leave the lights on every evening. Lights are rated by these criteria; look them over carefully and decide which one best suits your needs. There are many online resources that can help you in this search. Take advantage of these and comparison shop when looking for solar yard lights. Some examples of places you may look are department stores. Lots of solar lights are available in department store chains at great markdowns. It's easy to find inexpensive solar lights that can make your yard shine!

Create Space In Your Small Kitchen

By William Scott

Many people get frustrated by the lack of work and storage space available in their small kitchens. This is a problem that is common to many of us. The good news is that there is something that can be done. With a well thought out kitchen remodel you can maximize the space that you already have and create space that you never knew existed!

Maximize The Space In Your Kitchen

The most important thing to do when remodeling your kitchen is to make the most of the space that is available to you. The first step is to ensure that you have enough storage space for all your kitchen necessities.

In a crowded kitchen, finding room for storage is very important because otherwise you'll end up with items sitting out on the counter tops, and these will add to your feeling of a small and crowded kitchen. So, the first thing that you should do is maximize the storage space.

Creating More Room

To create more space in a small kitchen you need to be creative. Why not install floor to ceiling kitchen cupboards? Of course, this will require a small stepladder or foot stool, but it can be very effective. Make sure that the top shelves are used for items that are not used often, while the bottom, easily accessible shelves are used for items that are used most frequently. To maximize your under counter storage space you can fit rotating cupboard shelves on the corners of any kitchen fitting. Make sure that no space is wasted or inaccessible.

Once you've made as much storage as you can, there are some tips that you can follow to create even more room for yourself. Installing slightly deeper counter tops will give you more room to work, and getting rid of your center island will create a more open looking and feeling area in your kitchen. You want to be sure that you are keeping storage in mind each time you think about remodeling.

Make More Space

For small kitchens, the small details will help you have more space, or at least feel like you do. Choose smaller kitchen rugs, which will make the overall area look bigger. Also, see if you can hang your lights higher up towards the ceiling, which will also make your room look more open.

Select the appropriate furniture for your small kitchen. Removing a kitchen table and replacing it with a counter with stools will also maximize your working area. The stools should be narrow enough so that they can be tucked under the kitchen counter after use.

At first, a small kitchen remodeling job may seem like a big headache but, with the right attitude and some inventive ideas, it is possible to create an open, inviting, comfortable kitchen!

Courtyard Fountains And Ponds: Make Your Custom Version

By Herb Daniels

Over 5,000 years ago, people started building lovely palaces and other homes with beautiful courtyard fountains and ponds. Many of these decorative showpieces were the pride of kings and queens of Europe and Asia, as well as the aristocracies of those societies.

These days, such handsome attractions are not used by just the upper levels of society. Although they may seem somewhat costly to build, courtyard fountains and ponds are now available at prices that more enthusiasts can afford. As a result, lots of people are beautifying their domiciles with these additions. Happily these enviable showpieces can add value to a home.

Courtyard fountains and ponds can be found in a limitless array of shapes and sizes. The choices span the simple to the very elaborate and a wide selection of materials are offered. Cast stone is very often the preferred material of choice. This special type of concrete can be formed into almost any shape that is desired. On the other hand, many courtyard fountains and ponds are being made out of granite or different kinds of concrete and marble, which continues to be in demand.

Completing Courtyard Fountains and Ponds

Although it is certainly possible to put in your own courtyard fountains and ponds, it is highly suggested that a,professional be hired for this specialized type of work.. If you do decide that this is a project you can tackle on your own, you will find that kits for smaller fountains and ponds, which are expecially easy to install, are carried at most do it yourself home improvement stores. Should you attempt an installation of your own fountain or pond, it is advisable to follow several recommended steps.

If you are planning to install your own courtyard fountain and pond, an essential first step is for you to contact your local electric utility company. Unless you will be using a fountain running on solar power, fountains require electricity; and, their wires will need to be buried for safety and for aesthetics. Also, since you may not know what is buried in that area already, it is imperative to protect yourself by calling to find out.

To successfully put in a courtyard fountain and pond, make sure there are no large rocks, plants or any debris in your area of choice. Also, your pond liner may be a bit fragile, so getting these hazards out of the way ahead of time will help to protect it from punctures or tears.

Such fountains need to be level for them to function properly. Therefore, you will need to level any holes for your courtyard fountain and pond. Sidewall stones should not be positioned until the leveling process is completed. The system will operate its best if the water is level. This ensures that the pump will operate properly. Usually, instructions will be included in your courtyard fountain and pond kit. Be sure to read them. By doing so, you will have the attraction you desire - a lovely courtyard fountain and pond.

Indoor Trees Another Word for Living Art

By Thomas Fryd

Pachira Aquatica, also known as the Braided Money Tree is a unique and stylish plant that can add an exotic taste to anyone's home. This plant features multiple trunks which wind around each other and can reach up to seven feet in height. There is also a bonsai version which can grow as large as a foot in height.

On top of these winding trunks sits a plentiful patch of green foliage, creating a great contrast of brown trunks against green peak. It's one of the more natural looking plants you can add to your garden, and will do well to offset the often bright, contrasting colors of a variety of flowers. The bonsai version is a great choice for an indoors garden.

Caring for bonsais takes some time and planning. If you're planning on growing one from scratch you'll really need to study up on the matter and make sure you know what you're getting into, as it can be an exacting process. Acquiring an already developed plant would be your best bet, and the one most people will choice.

Even more than most plants, watering is very important. Not just the watering but also the soil and pot as well, as these will facilitate how well the bonsai can drain the water. The pot should contain at least a couple holes for drainage, and these should be covered slightly so as to let water drain through without the soil seeping out. Small rocks should do fine for this purpose. The soil itself should be a loamy mixture of small pebbles and soil.

These bonsais don't need much water, once a week should do the trick, but this depends on the soil and pot. The soil should dry out between watering, and recognizing the proper amount of moisture in the soil will go a long way to maintaining a healthy bonsai. Too much moisture and the leaves will wilt and yellow, too much and they'll become wrinkled and curled. In addition, you should also mist the leaves lightly with a spray bottle to give them some moisture and remove any dust particles.

Placing the bonsai in an area with a good deal of sunshine is perfect, but this should be indirect sunlight. More than a couple of hours of direct sun, or being in an area that is too hot in general is poor for the plant's health like in ficus care. An area with a small bit of sun followed by shade is ideal, and this is most commonly found in the corners of rooms. You can freely move the plant around as needed though if a good permanent spot is proving difficult. The plant should also be kept away from areas that are too cool. If the bonsai is kept on a porch or deck, be sure to bring it in on nights where the temperature is expected to dip below 50 degrees.

Compared to some plants, Braided Money Trees have a fairly simple and easy maintenance routine. By following these few simple guidelines you'll be sure to have a unique and striking plant for many years to come.

When thinking about putting a fence in your yard area for planting of gardens or for protection of your lawn from local pets and children, you might be able to consider a smaller fence, that is a little less secure, but that is still going to last a lifetime. There are chain link fences, plastic rail fences, iron fences, wooden spindle fences, even woven treated lattice types of fencing that is going to be a little less sturdy but that is going to mark the boundaries of where your landscape rock may sit, the plants grow and where you want the pets and children to stay out of.

Considering putting a wood fence around your yard or landscape area is a good idea. You will find that when you need to replace a portion it is going to be easy to replace and most likely less expensive at the same time. Think about the type of wood you are going to use. Treated lumber is known to last a long time. Other types of wood such as cedar, locust poles, chestnut and even redwoods are going to last much longer than your average pine is going to last. Investing in a fence can be a costly investment so you want to make the choice of a long lasting wood.

Think about how you are going to install the fencing of your choice. No matter what type of fencing material you are using, most all fencing has some type of posts that must be put into the ground to support the fencing. Remember, the deeper you put the posts, the most sturdy the rest of your fence is going to be. The higher your fence, the deeper you want the posts that are anchored to be in the ground. Privacy fencing can be some of the heaviest fencing, so you will have posts that are deep in the soil to keep the fencing from blowing over in high winds. Check out your local codes office for more detailed information about how to install fencing and what the local codes are for your area.

We can guide you through the many options that are available on the market. Then you can decide what is best for your family or situation.

There's really no end to the amount of money you can spend on outdoor grills, so set your budget before you even begin shopping. Is it a few hundred dollars, or a few thousands? It's very easy to get caught up in the excitement of all the fun accessories that are available with many of the outdoor grills, so be firm with yourself before you shop.

Now you have to give some thought to the usage of the outdoor grill. Is it for yourself and your family, will you be entertaining large groups of people? There are outdoor bbq grills that are available to suit two people to sizes that have hundreds of square inches in cooking space. Decide before you go out on your needs and requirements of your bbq grill.

If you rarely entertain and are just looking to enjoy an occasional picnic or meal outside, then you don't need the largest and fanciest model of outdoor grills. On the other hand, it's going to be tough to cook a meal for several people on a tabletop model that is really meant for just one or two.

Which do we choose; the charcoal or the gas outdoor bbq grills? This is not an easy question. The traditionalist will insist that charcoal gives the food a better taste or flavor. The dripping that comes of the meat mixes with the charcoal to create a more flavorful smoke that adds flavor to the meat while it cooks. If you are looking for outdoor charcoal bbq grills there are plenty on the market to choose from.

However, on the other hand propane is considered safer to deal with than charcoal. With just a press or touch of a button ignites outdoor bbq grills that use propane. No need for the lighter fluid and matches. Propane can be controlled more easily than charcoal. There is less of a chance with flare-ups with propane unlike charcoal grills when the juice from the meat drips down in a charcoal grill.

Despite of the type of outdoor bbq grills you may be considering to purchase, the important factor is learning how to use your new bbq grill. So please read the manufacturer's instructions. Now go out and try some new recipes.

Maintaining Your Lawn: Fall Lawn Care

By Andrew Caxton

Fall lawn care is important to maintaining a healthy lawn through the winter and for the spring at well. These tips will help you maintain your lawn.

Do not fall down the trap of letting fall lawn care slip at this important time of the year. In the fall, you have the best opportunity to improve your lawn. Take some time know to improve your lawn and in the spring, you will have an amazing finish.

Mowing During The Fall

In the fall months, lower the blades on your mower by at least an inch. This gets rid of any weeds and their seeds. It also improves the amount of air in the soil. Use the mulching option if you have it. This way, the leaves from trees are turned into fertilizer for your lawn and its all natural.

Time To Aerate

One thing to consider in the fall lawn care you plan to do is aerate it. Choose areas that see a lot of foot traffic and may be very compact at this point. This will allow roots to get more air and to allow them to grow easier. In this method, you are adding holes to the soil so that water as well as nutrients can get in and help improve the quality of the lawn.

There are several methods to use here. You can use a manual aeration with shoes and large spikes in them. You can use larger manual methods as well. Or, you can rent machines that will do the work for you. Once you have chosen and used a method, then spread compost over the area, fertilizer well and water well.

Fall Seeding

Once you have investing in aerating and thatching as necessary, it is time to consider adding seed to the area. With aeration just done, this is the perfect opportunity to add seed. Fall lawn care is perfect because now, there are fewer weeds growing. Keep new buds in your lawn growing with proper watering method.

Proper Water In Fall

Just as important as anything else during this time is using the right fall lawn care watering methods. In most cases, the fall months are times when you will need less in terms of water, but in most cases, especially with new seedlings, you do need a good amount of watering. Watering allows for roots to grow and for fertilizers to get into the ground deeper.

Invest the time now in maintaining a healthy lawn. Fall lawn care strategies are simple but they offer rewards throughout the winter and especially come summer time.

Bagless vs Bagged, which vacuum puts your health in danger?

By Kristina Brown

Has this ever happened to you? You are vacuuming your house and all of the sudden your vacuum cleaner bag is full and your vacuum needs filter changing. You look in the closet and it turns out you are all out of bags and filters. You feel angry and upset that you did not get an extra package of bags and that your machine constantly needs bag changing. You wish you had a machine that does not use bags exclusively and a machine that does not consistently require filters changing. A Bagless Vacuum Cleaner would answer this problem however a bagless vacuum cleaner creates problems as well. Every vacuum cleaner has positives and negatives to it and it is up to the user to figure out if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for their lifestyle.

Numerous people question the benefits and advantages to owning a bagless vacuum cleaner. One of the biggest benefits of owning a bagless machine is the situation mentioned above will never occur for you, simply because it is impossible to run out of bags for something that does not require bags. With a bagless machine you will never have to worry about having bags for your machine.

Another plus to owning a bagless vacuum cleaner applies to vacuum brands such as Dyson. Dyson vacuum cleaners do not require filter changes. Instead of the filters being disposable, the filters in the Dyson vacuum cleaners are washable. With a Dyson you simply wash the filter, let it dry for approximately 12 hours, and then you are prepared to begin vacuuming again. It is very important to note that this feature is not found in all bagless vacuum cleaners.

Some bagless vacuum cleaners use cyclonic technology, like the Dyson, which allows the vacuum cleaner to vacuum with the same amount of suction regardless of how much dirt is in the bin. This means no loss of suction even if the entire bin is full. Cyclonic technology is not found in every bagless vacuum cleaner, but be aware when shopping that this is a major consideration considering other brands without this technology do lose suction fairly quickly as the filter and bin begin to clog up with dirt.

Although there are many advantages to owning a bagless vacuum cleaner there are also some drawbacks. One of the biggest downsides of owning a bagless vacuum cleaner is emptying the dirt bin. When emptying the dirt bin the dirt does not neatly fill the trashcan instead it scatters everywhere leaving a mess all over the floor. Dirt scatters to the point where manufactures suggest going outside to empty the bin. For those with asthma and allergies emptying the dirt bin can become an agonizing chore as the dirt can easily trigger allergy and asthma problems. Asthma and allergy suffers should heavily consider purchasing a bagged machine as a bagged machine encloses allergy triggering filth within the machine, allowing you a healthier house.

Another downside to owning a bagless vacuum cleaner is it will always appear soiled. The dirt in the bin will be visible for everyone to see till you empty it and wash it. As mentioned before empting the dust and dirt component is an annoying and stressful task, but even more disturbing is the dirt bin will have to be washed - by hand in order to remove all of the dust and dirt from the bin. After picking up so many gross thing off the floor with your vacuum cleaner washing the machine by hand is tedious and disgusting task.

Another disadvantage of some bagless vacuum cleaners is the filtration system. This does not apply to all bagless vacuums but some vacuums contain horrendous filtration systems. Many machines rapidly fill and congest with dirt the minute the machine is switched on. Dirt should be filtered through the filter medium, which in a bagless vacuum cleaner is located in the same place the dirt and debris is located making the filter highly inefficient and unhealthy. The filter is supposed to contain and stop dirty air from spreading within your house, but with this type of setup the contaminated air spreads throughout your house, which should be a serious concern for allergy suffers. Another problem with some bagless filters is the amount of maintenance and money that is required to upkeep the filter. Numerous bagless vacuums require that you change the filter every 6 months, this totals to an amount of roughly $80 a year. A total which is very high for a vacuum cleaner which is supposed to prevent you from spending money on 'extras.' The filters for many bagless vacuum cleaners are both costly and ineffective. For this reason it is vital to look for either a bagged vacuum cleaner or a bagless vacuum cleaner with a lifetime washable filter (an example being the Dyson vacuum cleaner).

With a bagless vacuum cleaner you are not forced to purchase bags and filters for the machine, but it when purchasing your subsequent vacuum cleaner it is important to keep in mind the negatives of buying a bagless vacuum cleaner as well. Bagless vacuum cleaners are a horrendous choice for those with asthma and allergies, as the construction of the machine is far from friendly with those with these types of conditions. Overall it is the choice of the user, and the lifestyle of the user. However not having to replace the bag has many drawbacks such as a vacuum cleaner that never looks clean, needs filter replacements every 6 months for an ineffective filter, and a machine that constantly emits contamination into the air. Now you are armed with useful information about the positives and negatives of both the bagged and bagless vacuum cleaner, which can help you find out what is best for you and your current situation.

Improve Your Home From the Ground Up

By Dionne Voughar

If you need more living space, but you're just not ready to move, why not consider a basement renovation? Remodeling the basement is one of the easiest ways to create more living space in your home. All too often, homeowners fail to utilize the potential in their basements, choosing to use the dark areas as storage for sports equipment, old toys, seasonal decorations and all of those other items that aren't used on an everyday basis. These basements are rarely used, and much of the stuff we've stored gets thrown out or given away when we move.

Perhaps it is time for you to reconsider how you use your basement. Remodeling your basement is a cost-effective way to expand your home's living space. You could have a guest room, a home office, a children's play room, a recreation room; the possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Below are five easy steps to help you reclaim your basement.

1. Solve any water problems first.

Even problems with dampness or flooding occur only rarely, it's best to solve the problem before beginning any remodeling work. A permanent solution can take time to implement. A good place to start would be to talk to an independent home inspector who specializes in waterproofing problems.

2. Plan how you will use your new space.

Consider the characteristics of your basement, and try to use the space accordingly. If your basement lacks natural light, it will make an ideal home theatre or dark room. An isolated area provides a natural sound barrier, so use the space as a music room or teenager's hangout.

3. Get help with the design.

Your basement may not be much to look at now, but you'll want to end up with a quality living space. An architect or an interior designer can help you get the most out of the space. A little forethought and some careful planning now can help you to create a space that is comfortable, attractive, and useful.

4. Pay attention to air circulation.

The odds are, that, when your home was first built, there were few if any air registers or vents installed in the basement. When you remodel your basement, you need to think about the importance of good air circulation, and add openings wherever necessary.

Carbon monoxide detectors are smart and safe additions to any basement. They give early warnings of any problems with the venting of the furnace and major appliances.

5. Bring out the light.

You'll probably want to add more light in your basement. Enlarged windows provide not only more light, but alternative escape routes in case of fire.

Some homeowners may be concerned that basement windows create an entrance for thieves. If you are worried about potential break-ins, glass blocks or security bars are good options for letting the sun shine in, while keeping criminals at bay.

You can also maximize the light in your basement by mounting windows in the interior walls, between rooms. This allows additional pathways for natural light to reach the interior rooms.

Vegetable Gardening - Lettuce Growing Tips

By Dave Truman

There's nothing better than a salad made with fresh lettuce from the garden. Adding lettuce to your garden can be a welcome addition. Not only is healthy and tasty to eat but it needs very little space to grow. But there are some guidelines you should know before planting lettuce.

To grow lettuce or any other vegetable, you need to have good soil. For lettuce, keep the nitrogen level high by using 30-10-10 NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer. This will provide the lettuce with the nutrition it needs to produce healthy leaves.

When planting lettuce seeds make sure they are planted 1/8-3/8 inch deep, separated by 6-12 inches (2-3.5 m) from the next plant. Romaine lettuce can be planted closer together but other crisp lettuce need more space. If you plant in rows, keep the rows separated by about 20 inches (6m).

The roots of lettuce do not grow very deep so it is important to weed often. Many other grasses and plants with deeper root growth can invade the lettuce.

Since lettuce lacks deep root growth it has to find moisture near the surface. Therefore it is important to keep the soil moist but not saturated. Try to keep the water off of the leaves and into the soil except for the occasional washing. Wet leaves especially during nighttime temperatures can lead to disease.

Like any other vegetable, lettuce plants have problems with diseases and pests. Many insects enjoy the lettuce leaves and the folds of the leaves also offer many places for fungi to grow.

Aphids, flea beetles and leafhoppers are common problems. Slugs are even more so. Cutworms are often seen. Washing with a high pressure hose can help temporarily, but be sure to do it early to give the leaves time to dry before nightfall. A good insecticide lightly applied will keep them under control for the long term.

One common fungal disease is anthracnose (Microdochium panattonianum). This fungus can stay alive in soil for many years. Bottom rot (Rhizoctonia solani) is another common fungus. This type of fungus usually occurs in soil that drains poorly. To combat these fungi, keep foliage dry and plant in good soil.

Bolting is a common problem with lettuce, and it isn't a disease or pest, though it can be worsened by them. It occurs when the plant goes to seed and the leaves stop growing. Lettuce likes cool weather and bolting is more common when the temperatures are consistently too high. Keeping the plants shaded will help. One way to do that is to plant a shading crop, like corn, over the lettuce.

Lettuce is a wonderful vegetable to have in your garden. With proper preparation and care, you can enjoy salads with fresh lettuce throughout the growing season.

Vegetable Gardening - Fertilization & Irrigation Tips

By Dave Truman

Loamy soil will help you produce a productive, healthy garden. The soil should crumble in your hands and should have a minimal clay and sand mixture. Too much water is retained by clay-like soil, which doesn't allow for proper drainage. Nutrients are lacking in andy soil, and there is little support and water retention.

Good fertilizer and the right amount of water are needed to produce loamy soil.

Know what type of soil you're starting with before you add anything. Testing kits are inexpensive and can tell you what kind of soil you have. pH levels and nutrient levels will be tested. Most vegetables are best suited in a pH range of 6.0-6.5, but some favor acidic soils and other prefer alkaline earth.

Adding sulfur or lime can adjust the pH. Adding fertilizer will supply those nutrients. pH should be adjusted several months before planting. In some climates, that means doing so after the prior years harvest, before the snows start.

If you've created a compost pile, add the material to the topsoil about three weeks before planting. That will give it time to naturally leach the needed nutrients into the soil before you plant. You can speed up the process somewhat by tilling it into the top few inches. Otherwise, you can add organic or artificial fertilizer (such as NPK 8-8-8) to enrich your soil. Add that right before planting. About 20 pounds per thousand square feet is enough in most cases.

Vegetables love lots of water, unlike most herbs and some other plants, although most are not suited to sit continuously in a pool of water, which leads to root rot. Continuously moist soil, however, will aid your plants growing and support themselves.

Water is essential to your plants. It is used to transport nutrients throughout the plant, participate in photosynthesis, and give rigidity and firmness to cell structures. For most gardens, one inch of water per week is sufficient (about 65 gallons per 100 square feet). This may cary slightly depending on your soil type. You may need to supplement if natural rain activity doesn't supply that amount from April through September.

Fortunately, it's easy to supply.

If applied in moderate temperatures, watering vegetable plants from above doesn't wilt them, unlike flowering plants. There is still common considerations to apply. Allow leaves and topsoil to dry before nighttime temperatures settle in by watering early in the day. This is one way to prevent fungus. Building an inexpensive, simple drip irrigation system is another way to accomplish the same goal. Rubber tubing that leaches water should be placed near the plant in order to supply water to the roots.

Then, only occasional water is needed to keep leaves clean and their pores open. Don't water when it's very hot, though. That defeats the purpose, since it causes the pores in the leaves to open, and they evaporate more moisture than you supplied. It can also cause burns when water droplets act like small magnifying glasses.

Controlling a Variety Landscape and Garden Pests

By Kent Higgins

Trying to control pests and bugs in an organic garden can be challenging, just ask an organic gardener. No matter the flora, all have their variety of insects that they attract. No plant leaf, stem and/or flower are immune.

The most time consuming yet most natural way is to inspect each leaf and flower for bugs and removing them by hand. This is not ideal if you have a large garden and obviously not a favorite method among gardeners. Thank goodness, there are other methods one can use.

Persistent control of weed growth is a step in the right direction. From the beginning of planting, especially in vegetable gardens, a large enough space for a hoe to work easily should be left between rows and seedlings. If done early on, weeds are easily taken out and are not given time to drop their seeds and attract unwanted vermin to your patch.

Certain plants used as by-standers in the garden are also deterrents. These herbs and flowers act as natural repellents and aid in controlling annoyances. Some to consider are chives, elderberry, garlic and lemon balm.

Each plant is used differently to repel. When chives are planted around rose bushes they prevent black spot and they also prevent scab, when around apple tress. Elderberry branches and leaves can be used to displace moles just by simply putting them into a mole's hole.

The tea you make from the leaves of this same plant can also be used to fend off aphids, carrot root fly, peach tree borers, and cucumber beetles. The smell from garlic is another repellent but be careful not to plant them near other vegetables that might absorb its flavor. Scattering lemon balm leaves throughout can also repel in your backyard landscaping. Did you also know, by rubbing the crushed leaves of lemon balm you can ward off mosquitoes? These methods are all repellents that can be used in your organic garden to keep pests away.

Why Grow Plants in a Container Garden?

By Sarah Duke

Container gardening has so many benefits, it's hard to believe more people aren't doing it.

Container gardening is a great way to make the most of the limited space you have. If you live in a home with a tiny yard or even an apartment, it can be hard to find a place for a garden. Containers allow you to have a garden on your patio, on the porch, or even inside of your home.

Many people have small container gardens in a sunny windowsill in their kitchen, or in a sunroom or spare bedroom. Some people even grow plants in a closet by using a grow light.

You'll also find that container gardening brings with it the benefit of being able to easily move your plants. If there is bad weather coming, it makes it simple to bring outdoor plants inside so they will be out of the elements. Also, if you find that there is too much sun on your plants or not enough, you can easily move them to a location that works better. And you can easily move containers around if you think they'll look better somewhere else.

Plants grown in containers don't contract diseases as easily compared to plants grown directly in the soil. It's true that plants grown in containers can still become infected with diseases, but you will find the probability is much less than if you had grown them in your landscape. Potting soil is generally free of disease-causing organisms, so your plants will be safer.

It's easier to feed your plants when they're in a container. You can make sure that the fertilizer you put in with the plants will get to them. When you use fertilizer on plants in traditional gardens, often it will end up going to other plants or just drain away. When the plants are in containers, this is not as likely to happen.

Of course, when the soil area is relatively small, there is a chance the fertilizer can be washed out of the soil faster. Because of this, you do need to fertilize more often than you would a traditional garden. But you can rest assured that your plants are probably getting more of the fertilizer before it does wash away than they would if they were in the ground.

The growing season is extended when your plants are grown in containers. You can keep the soil of your potted plants warmer by wrapping them in blankets or any other insulating materials. Your plants can be started sooner indoors or in a cold frame and then be transported outdoors to larger pots when the weather is more permitting.

The right use of insulation can allow you to keep growing your plants outside even after the first frost. Also, you can easily bring the plants inside if it gets too cold for them to be outside, even if they are well insulated.

Of course one great benefit of using container gardens is that it makes gardening easy and accessible for everyone. People who are dealing with disabilities often find that it is much easier to go with a container garden, since they can put the plants where they can get to them easily. Those who are in wheelchairs often find that putting their plants on low tables makes it easier to get to them. Even those who are elderly, who find it hard to work in a traditional garden, can enjoy container gardening.

Young children will also enjoy container gardening because it takes a lot of the work out of traditional gardening, such as removing weeds, and less adult supervision is required.

If your space is limited for gardening in a traditional landscape, then using pots instead is a great alternative to allow you to enjoy your plants.

Required Distinctive Houseplant - Try Bamboo

By Thomas Fryd

If you're looking for an interesting houseplant, try bamboo. Though it can be challenging, it is attractive and strong and spreads prolifically.

The first step in growing bamboo is preparing the pot. While there are some smaller species, most bamboo plants grow extremely high. You won't see much growth in the first few years, however, so a medium-sized pot should do.

Once you have selected your pot, it's time to get the soil ready. Bamboo thrives in well-drained, acidic soil, so choose a loam soil low in clay content. A soil testing kit will allow you to test the pH. You can also improve the soil by spreading a couple of inches of mulch on the surface and adding earthworms to the pot to decay the leaves and increase soil aeration.

When the plants mature and begin to shed leaves, allow them to remain on the soil to increase moisture. Another good surface soil treatment is groundcover. Choose one that is high in nitrogen and silica, both of which bamboo requires to thrive. Some gardeners add nutrients to the soil with chicken manure, though many don't like the odor, especially if the plant is kept in or very near the house.

Bamboo may be planted year-round in fairly warm climates, but gardeners in colder climates should wait until mid-spring. If you plant later than this, the bamboo won't have enough time to become established before cold weather returns. Be aware, too, that if you keep your bamboo inside near a window, heat can be drawn away from the plant by the cold window, though heavy mulching will offset this effect somewhat.

Because bamboo spreads quickly, it is important to make sure it doesn't become root-bound. Even if you use a large pot, you will likely have to re-pot at some point. Some opt for smaller species to keep the plants from outgrowing their containers too quickly, or will use a long planter box to create a neat row of plants.

Watering carefully is crucial for bamboo grown in containers. Proper watering practice is critical for container-grown bamboo and palms like the Rhapis excelsa. Because bamboo evolved in very moist climates, it cannot tolerate much dryness. Be sure not to soak the soil, either, though. Experiment and observe until you have found the watering schedule your plant responds best to.

Be aware, too, that new bamboo plantings must be watered more frequently. Though twice weekly waterings are the norm, some plants only need one watering each week. About one half gallon of water is needed for a five-gallon pot. Watering more often than this may damage the plant, causing it to drop too many leaves. Don't worry if the leaves yellow and fall in the Spring, though; this is normal.

Indoor Plants And Unique Properties to Note

By Thomas Fryd

Catalogues of indoor plants can be a great tool to learn about the various flowers and plants available for purchase, and everything related to the care and upkeep of them. For any homeowner looking for stylish choices that will fit well with their existing decor, it's a great opportunity to see photos of all of these flowers in full bloom and get a sense for they can be incorporated into your household.

Before rushing out and ordering a dozen flowers or cuttings from a catalogue though, take some time to look into the reputation of the company. How plants and flowers are grown from birth will determine their ability to perform well into full bloom, and some companies will do this better than others. In addition many good companies have taken to using non-chemical fertilizers and plant food, all in an environment to promote a natural and safe environment. Some companies may claim they practice this policy but in reality they don't.

Another area catalogues can be used to great effect is in researching which plants could be potentially harmful to small pets or even children if ingested or even touched. Other species of plants may have other unique characteristics, such as attracting or repelling insects and pests. All told, your choices will need to come down to more than just style and color, which many indoor gardeners rarely consider.

A final thing that can be gleaned from catalogues is the full mature height plants will grow to. While some plants may not grow much throughout their entire lifespan, others will quickly evolve from that tiny sapling into a full-grown wonder, requiring many re-potting jobs along the journey. Just looking at pictures of plants may not tell the whole story, as you may assume ever picture accurately depicts a plant at maturity, which may not be the case. Catalogues will give you this information, with expected growth levels at various stages of the plant's development.

Catalogues will offer a wealth of useful information to help facilitate your indoor gardening expansion. You'll get decorating ideas as well as expert tips and advice on how to keep your plants healthy and happy while avoiding the pitfalls that certain plants may fall victim to. You may in fact find so many species of plant that fascinate you that you simply won't know which one to choose like the dracaena sanderiana. It's a hard decision, but whatever choice you make you'll add an exciting and cheerful accent to any room in your house.

Garden Maintenance - An Introduction

By Ron Hartfield

Along with the great summer weather comes many outdoor jobs that have to be done. It takes a lot of work to keep your lawn and the outside of your home appearing perfect. Some things can be done seasonally, but many jobs need to be carried out on a weekly schedule.

Your lawn and landscaping requires more time than any other external task. It's the first impression that visitors get of your home and you want it to look at its best. Applying fertilizer to your lawn will make it grow thicker and have a much richer green color. Regular cutting and trimming will help too.

Wood chips and plastic sheeting can be used in flower beds to minimize weeding. It can also help the soil to retain moisture and reduce watering times. And, your trees, bushes and shrubs will need to be trimmed and pruned.

The wood on your deck can take a hiding during the winter months. The action of melting snow, freezing and thawing can quickly attack the decks surface. Throughly cleaning the wood and re-sealing it will prevent it from deteriorating further and needing replacement. A little time now can save you from increased work in the future.

Solar lights are fundamentally care free additions to your yard. The only maintenance they need is an occassional cleaning. Light coverings should be taken off and cleaned to remove dirt and dust. And, any debris should be removed.

The outside of your house must be checked every summer and any chips or loose pieces of siding or bricks should be repaired. Rain seeping behind any loose pieces of siding or cracked bricks will cause the wood foundation to rapidly rot. Mould or stains can be removed with a special solution, or often just with soap and water.

If you have a swimming pool the water needs to be tested every 7 days. Maintaining the chemical balance in your pool at the required level will maintain the water bacteria free and clean for your family. And, the heat of the summer will cause the bacteria and germs to incubate so don't skimp on this task.

Whilst it may be alright to let your external summer jobs get behind from time to time, don't let them lapse for too much time. Things that are neglected take much longer to complete when you do get around to it. And, summer time is for enjoying the garden with your family, not toiling all the time.

Which Type of Flower Basket is Best to Send When a Baby is Born?

By Amy Nutt

The arrival of a new baby is a joyous event and one that definitely warrants recognition. Sending a flower basket is a great way to welcome the new bundle of joy into the world. There are many different options and if you don`t know what to do, it can be pretty confusing trying to choose the right flower basket. Here are some tips on what to look for.

Which Color to Choose

Pink for girls and blue for boys is the usual choice, but it can be a little boring. If you want to spice things up a bit, opt for something like purple and white flowers for a baby girl and red for a boy. For a non-gender specific flower basket, go with the ever-so-sweet all white option. It`s innocent and beautiful and the new mom will be thrilled with it.

Flower Choices

When sending flowers, the flowers you choose are important. Delicate, aromatic flowers may be lovely, but they wilt and die very quickly. In order to make the most of your gift, you`ll want to opt for flowers that are hardy and will last longer, yet still elegant enough for a baby.

Carnations are an obvious choice for babies, with their soft, ruffled appearance and delicate perfume. However, carnations can be a bit traditional, so if you are looking for something more original, why not choose Gerber daisies? These simple, but pretty flowers are hardy and can last for a week, making them a great flower to send to a baby. They also come in a wide variety of colors, so it`s easy to find the color combination that you want. Gerber daisies are also lower in price than many more fragile flowers, so they are a good choice any way you look at it.

Little Extras

Just a flower basket isn`t really enough for most people, so most flower delivery shops will allow you to choose little extras to turn a simple flower basket into something truly special. There are dozens of extra items that can be added to a baby flower basket, including the following:

- It`s a Boy/Girl! Balloons - Teddy bears - Baby figurines or mother and child figurines - Assorted other stuffed animals - Baby rattles and toys - Picture frames with a baby theme - Music box

These aren`t anything major, but they can really make a big difference in how your flower basket is presented. A ravishing bunch of Gerber daisies with a cute teddy bear and a balloon announcing the baby`s arrival makes a great gift for the newborn.

What About Mom?

Parents of the new baby can really enjoy a flower basket as well. Consider going with a more adult theme for the new mom, though. Roses make a great bouquet that is at once elegant and pretty, particularly if you choose a softer color like peach or yellow.

A flower basket simply recognizes the hard work put in by the mother of the new baby, 9 months of carrying the child and then the delivery. You can add some other little extras to this basket, as well. Chocolates, cookies or even a little figurine are ideal for the new mom flower basket.

To welcome a baby into the world and your circle of friends, you really can`t go wrong with a baby themed flower basket. It`s something that the mother and father will enjoy and it`s something that can be enjoyed immediately, as opposed to a toy that would have to wait until the baby is older. Flowers are always a good choice.

What dangers do dust mites impose on my family?

By Kristina Brown

There is what in my house? What problems occur when dust mites are present in my house? How can you be allergic to dust mites? Is a dust mite a living thing or is it an inanimate object? Your house at this very moment is being swarmed by millions of eight-legged creatures known as dust mites. Many people are aware of the existence of dust mites but limited knowledge about these creatures past that.

Do Dust Mites Defecate? Dust mites defecate like any other animal that eats. On use average a dust mite will defecate approximately 20 times a day, on various items in your house including your couch, carpeting, mattress and other household items.

Eww Gross! Is All That Waste Harmful to Me? It is utterly gross to know that every night that warm comfy bed you lie down in is covered in feces and a combination of dead and alive dust mites. The feces of dust mites can actually trigger allergic reactions because the body might recognize a dust mite's feces as a foreign substance, and attack it. This reaction works like any other reaction such as peanuts, crayfish, or pollen. Allergic reactions are not caused by the dust mites themselves but the feces they produce.

How would someone describe a Dust mite? A dust mite is a living, breathing creature, just like you and me. It breathes, eats, defecates, and reproduces like any other living thing. Over its lifetime a female dust mite will lay a total of 100 eggs, and die within 60 days while a male dust mite will die within one month.

What is the Reason we have an Allergic Reaction to Dust Mite Feces but Not our Own Feces? Dust mites feces contains and specific type of protein, which triggers the allergic reactions. Humans do not create this protein so human waste does not cause allergic reactions.

What are Some of the Things Which May be Experienced Due to an Allergic Reaction? A dust mite allergy is analogous to any other allergy such as pollen and dust. Sneezing, itching, and watery eyes are common effects of a dust mite allergy. Dust mite allergies are like having the common cold all the time, which often aggravates those with it because they are unable to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem.

Dust mites cause a lot of problems, but exactly how big is a dust mite? A dust mite's size is minuscule, at a total size of only half a millimeter. Dust mites create enormous problems for asthma and allergy suffers in comparison to their tiny stature.

With this article you are armed with information about what dust mites are, their habitat of choice, and their size. The data provided will hopefully helped you learn more about the millions of 8 legged creatures within your house.

Basics of lawn care maintenance

By Andrew Caxton

If you want a lawn that looks great throughout the year, then it requires some serious commitment and devotion as far as maintenance is concerned. People with lack of time to look after their lawn can opt for the services of a lawn care company to do the necessary work for them. There are some people who are passionate about gardening and lawn care but are not equipped with the required expertise. Such people can ask for local assistance and combine it with their own amateur knowledge.

The kind of help provided by the local gardener could be of great service in maintaining your lawn. Some of the advantages of local help are that a gardener staying in your vicinity is more aware of the right grass to be planted in your lawn on the basis of the soil and weather conditions. In the absence of a local gardener, you could also take advice from a soil analyst who could guide you in this area along with telling you what kind of nutrition your lawn needs. Getting hold of a lawn care calendar is also a good idea as this will ensure that you maintain your lawn on time without forgetting any of the essentials.

If you take good care in the maintenance and upkeep of your lawn, you will have weed-free and thick, beautiful grass. There are some types of grass that are very tough in nature and so do not let the influx of pests into your lawn. A vital ingredient in lawn care is the watering. This should neither be too less or in excess. Wastage of water by spraying it in other places apart from the lawn should be discouraged. While mowing lawns, the grass should be cut short to strengthen the roots and the clippings should not be removed as they are converted into compost after decomposition.

When hiring professional help, you have the option either to go for partial lawn care or the complete lawn care package. Prices will differ depending on the service you choose. There are certain companies that also provide maintenance services for the entire landscape. This means that flowering plants, trees etc. are all included in the maintenance.

Before finalizing on a lawn maintenance company, you have to specify that a well qualified and knowledgeable horticulturist be sent to you for consultation purposes. This includes the ability to gauge the needs of the soil for pesticides and fertilizers and familiarity with the local legalities regarding fertilizer and pesticide along with knowing the norms about the local watershed water quality. The horticulturist should also be equipped with a license to use pesticides and most importantly, should have good knowledge about steel landscape edging as well.

Help! My Allergist Says I am Allergic to Dust Mites

By Kristina Brown

What exactly are dust mites? Are they harmful to my health? My doctor said I might be allergic to dust mites what does this mean? Many questions are asked about dust mites, but many are left unanswered. Hopefully in this article I will be able to shed some light on this fairly mysterious topic.

How Would Someone Define Dust Mites? The existence of dust mites is obvious to many, yet only a small percentage of the population know anything else about dust mites. Dust mites are animals that stem from the arachnid or spider branch and even have 8 legs like a spider. They eat, breathe, and defecate similar to any other animal. A male dust mite will live for approximately 30 days, while a female dust mite's life span will double a male's life span by about 60 days. Within the entirety of a female dust mite's life span, the dust mite will create and lay approximately 100 eggs.

How Big are They? Dust Mites are extremely small in fact you need a microscope or very strong magnifying glass in order to see one. They are about half a millimeter big.

What is the Amount of Dust Mites That Live Within My House? It is impossible to come up within exact amount of dust mites that are found within your house, but it is known that in the average mattress millions of dust mites take residence. Dust mites thrive in your pillows, sheets, comforters, carpeting, couches, and chairs.

Why Do They Live In Bed and Couch of All Places? Dust mites enjoy places with a high amount of humidity and they receive that humidity when you perspire, breathe or drool. They also like to go into places where they are not exposed to the sun or vacuum cleaner. They dig down deep into the carpeting and grab onto the carpet fibers to prevent them from getting sucked out by a vacuum cleaner or beat out by the brushroll.

They Like Humidity But What Do They Like To Eat? You. Dust mites eat the dead skin humans shed daily. A days worth of shedded skin is enough for hundreds of thousands of dust mites. This is also why they enjoy living in the places mentioned earlier, because these are some of the most common places that a person sheds skin.

Wouldn't it be Smarter to Call Them Skin Mites Instead of Dust Mites? Dust in mostly composed of dead skin. The dust found within your house, in places such as the TV, or in the air is actually dead skin. Because a majority of dust is comprised of the dead skin dust mites feed on, dust mites are called "dust" mites.

You now possess a greater understanding of what dust mites are and how they live. Hopefully this will help you understand the true amount and lifestyle of the dust mites in your house.

The Most Popular Candy in Mexico

By KC Kudra

Mexican kids have a wide array of sweet treats to choose from in Mexican stores. There are hundreds of different types and flavors. Just because they happen to be candies, however, does not mean they are sweet! A lot of the Mexican candy recipes use chili as an ingredient. Mexicans love chili so it is only natural to use it in chocolate and candies. You can get chocolate candies, gummy candies, Mexican milk candy, and chewing gum. Mexicans have their own preferences when it comes to candy and seem to like it hot hot hot! Why not have a look for some recipes for traditional Mexican candy and make your own? At least you can alter the spiciness if you just want a touch of chili rather than enough to make your eyes water.

Something quite new in Mexico, which is popular right now, is called Salsaghetti. This is a packet of watermelon straws that resemble pasta. They are spicy and you also get a pouring sauce, which is called gusano tamarind. Tamarind is an Asian fruit which is also widely grown in Mexico and gusano means worm! A lot of Mexican candy contains tamarind. Salsaghetti looks a lot like a meal but you do not get candy meatballs with it.

Mexican popsicles are very different from those found in other countries. They are spicy in Mexico and some are extremely piquant. American kids might love cinnamon popsicles but Mexican kids are more likely to crave a chili-covered one. The chili powder is usually on the outside and the inside might be chili flavored too or it might be a different flavor, such as watermelon, cherry, strawberry, pineapple, or sapote, which is like a custard apple or sugar apple.

Since Mexico is responsible for introducing the joys of chocolate to the world, thanks to the Aztecs, you might assume that present day Mexicans enjoy chocolate candies. Actually, they do not consume that much compared to other countries. What they prefer is to use chocolate as an ingredient in their drinks or in traditional Mexican recipes such as mole poblano, which is a nut, chili, onion, garlic and chocolate sauce. Have a look for some mole poblano recipes and try making your own. You might find someone enjoying a chocolate patty candy, which perhaps also contains sugar, almonds, and cinnamon, but the Mexicans are not big eaters of chocolate.

Dulce de leche is a much-loved Mexican treat. Meaning "milk candy," dulce de leche is like caramel in taste and appearance. It can be eaten alone or as a topping for dishes such as Mexican ice cream or grilled bananas. If you want to know how to make dulce de leche, it is very straightforward. You need to boil sweetened condensed milk for several hours or make your own with sugar and goat's milk or cow's milk. It keeps well in the refrigerator but you will need to heat it up again so you can pour it. Once you have made some, you might want to use it in dulce de leche flan, dulce de leche cheesecake or in a dulce de leche sauce recipe. Dulce de leche cake is very popular with Mexicans.

Other countries are getting familiar with dulce de leche recipes too. Starbucks has a dulce de leche flavored latte, which the Americans like. Dulce de leche ice cream is sold across grocery stores in the southwest of the United States.

You can buy Mexican candies from local Mexican grocery stores or even online. If you do not like to mix your chili with your sweet foods, you can also choose from caramel candies or chocolate candies. There are many types of Mexican candy to choose from so have a look today!

More Secrets to Playing the Wine Auction Game

By KC Kudra

The United States Illinois and Napa Valley wines sales allow commercial wine auctions. Online wine sales, Napa Valley style is allowed as well. In New York, which is a very nice place for an auction, are in the process of passing bills to permit port wine sales and auctions, but with little success. Chicago is one place where California wines and wine sales are quite rigorous and people travel from all over just to get in on the bargains. Britain, where wine auctions and wine cellars are open regularly throughout the fall and winter, have retail wine chains that have flourished. One particular chain has taken over one of the wine retailers on the American West Coast.

Wine auctions are considered by the British wine trade as being a way of sparking interest in wines and looks to it to increase sales for everyone. In Australia, wine auctions are plentiful especially online wine sales and auctions. There are a number of online wine communities devoted to sharing tasting notes and critiques about various wines they have encountered. Biggest amongst those communities is Auswine Discussion Forum, where you can search critiques and get advice on various wines from the comfort of your own living room. From your armchair, you can enjoy the benefits of buying fine wines at an online wine sale or auction.

Bidding and Tasting Tips when Attending a Wine Auction

Setting out into the virtual or real world of wine auctions should be handled about the same. Do your research and figure out what you are willing to pay for the wines you are looking to bid on in the auction. It is a good idea to get maximum and minimum prices paid for a comparable bottle of wine prior to the commencement of the wine auction. That way you will have a good idea of what should be charged for the wines. Try to attend a pre-auction tasting session so that you can get the wine you like. Sometimes there will also be end of line mixed cases available at hugely discounted prices that you will want to keep an eye out for. The trade bidders are not that interested in those, so there will be bargains galore.

Another good idea is to attend a wine warehouse tasting to get used to the brands available, then you will understand what you are bidding for instead of biding blindly. You can form a consortium with friends and or colleagues, so the costs are reduced, and you can afford to bid for more variety.

My preference is to do the online auctions on a paper basis first to get acquainted with the procedure. Just write down your bid for your preferred lots, write down the final selling price, and judge your own effort. Do not bid until you are confident. If you are going to a tasting, please ensure you get someone else to do the driving!

Wine auctions are not the socially limiting situations that most people perceive; instead, they are fun places to go where bargains await the person who has done adequate research. A well-known international auction house representative recently commented, "I think online wine auctions are still in their infancy." If that is the case, online wine sales and wine auctions are a great opportunity not to be missed by wine lovers everywhere. Do some research and then jump right in!

Which One Of These Bonsai Types Is Perfect For You?

By Lee Dobbins

The word bonsai, pronounced as bone-sigh, means tray tree, bon is tray, while sai means tree. There are many bonsai types and one is probably perfect for you. The longer the life of a bonsai tree, the greater its value.

The two main types of bonsai trees are -indoor and outdoor. The more acquainted you get with them and know them well the better chances you have of having beautiful looking healthy ,happy bonsai trees for many years. The trees can be picturesque as they have different styles, like, informal or formal upright, cascade and semi cascade, literati and raft. Their sizes also range from miniature small and medium to average.(they can either be small fruit or small flowers)

The simplest bonsai trees to grow indoors requiring the same amount of attention as a house plant are the tropical and subtropical trees. Absolute novices may benefit by selecting one of these types. For these trees, the ideal location is place that allows them to absorb both the morning sunlight and afternoon shade. Some trees are able to survive in full sunlight but it is better to play it safe and monitor how your bonsai grows in its location. It's possible to place your indoor bonsai outside in late spring bordering on summer. However, it must be brought inside if temperatures fall below 55 degrees.

The best bonsai types for beginners are ficus, baby jade, and Hawaiian umbrella trees, to name only a few. Many other indoor bonsai trees exist, such as serissa, sago palms, araliad, Fukien tea, money tree, brush cherry, schefflera, bougainvillea, gardenias, and elms, which can be adapted. Two species of outdoor bonsai trees are evergreens like juniper and pine, and deciduous, like maple, gingko, and elm.

Evergreen bonsai trees are especially nice because they keep their leaves or needles throughout the year. Azaleas, boxwoods, juniper, and most pines fall into this category. Both beautiful and trainable, the juniper is a very popular bonsai tree variety. A healthy evergreen bonsai will go through a dormant period every year. There's no need to worry if you see a yellowish tinge or a dull green on the leaves or needles, it's just the evergreen bonsai during its rest cycle.

Deciduous trees are those trees which lose their leaves in the fall or go into the dormant stage and start re-budding in the spring. They are not suitable for growing as indoors bonsais since they go dormant in winter. These have to be placed carefully in a shed garage or near a cool window sill during winter. It is best not to let them have too much sunlight and water during these months. Fertilizers should be given every few weeks. Bonsais have different varieties such as larch, apricot, hornbeam, ginko, maple, crabapple and elm species. Japenese maple is the most challenging of all the outdoor trees. They have their foliage changing color in spring and the fall, and the colors range from yellow to orange to a beautiful deep red.

There are a number of outdoor bonsai types one can choose from. These options include the Chinese fringe flower, Chinese elm, Japanese red maple, blue moss cypress, star cypress and soft touch holly. If you intended to grow a bonsai, note that all outdoor bonsai need to be treated with care (particularly in the wintertime). Overall, it is important to ensure that they are properly protected.

How Bonsai Trees Can Turn You Into An Addict

By Rick Lasslett

I am not going to go into the ins and outs of the technicalities of caring for Bonsai Plants. There are plenty of articles that cover all aspects pruning and styling, repotting and maintaining your Bonsai Tree. No...I am going to take you into the why of Bonsai and so explain why a lot of Bonsai gardeners are addicted!

If you have not heard of Bonsai trees or Bonsai plants you are a rare person indeed! Bonsai miniaturization probably dates back before the Chinese started several centuries ago. Then Bonsai techniques were picked up by the Japanese who really went to work and refined and perfected the skills to turn them into an art form. Since then the rest of the world has caught up with this amazing hobby and taken to it with a vengeance!

There has been a lot written about Bonsai and it's care, growing techniques, forms, styles, dos and donts. If I were a newcomer to the hobby I could be quite overwhelmed by the amount of information and seemingly complicated rules to follow. I may then decide that it is all too hard and not get involved in Bonsai at all. But that would be to miss the entire point.

There is something indefinable about Bonsai trees. Their exquisite beauty in miniature form, the way they transport you to a different perspective, the peace and tranquillity you feel by just gazing at your tree is something that must be experienced rather than described. With Bonsai trees in your home you can be transported to a different place, away from the hustle and bustle and pressures of modern life to a place of inner peace and calm. All the more so if those Bonsai trees have been nurtured and sculptured by you!

To spend time with a Bonsai plant caring for it, shaping it, feeding and watering it, is to gradually enter into a kind of meditation. The world is shut out while you study the form of the tree, visualizing the shape you wish to coax your tree into and planning the small steps needed to achieve your aims. There is much to learn, there is much to practice... but the pay off is priceless. Once you have had some small successes with your Bonsai you are in danger of becoming addicted! But then so what! There are far worse things in this world to become addicted to than the harmless and beautiful world of Bonsai trees.

You have to put in the time and care to achieve your end result. However the thing about Bonsai is that it is the time spent that is the addiction! That is what calms the spirit, the doing not the getting.

However before you can loose yourself in this type of meditation you need to learn some basic skills. Select the type of Bonsai trees that you want to grow and set yourself up with some good quality Bonsai supplies. There is ample Bonsai literature available both for the beginner and the experienced and your Bonsai trees will look even more beautiful in an interesting pot and perhaps on a display table.

You will be rewarded with endless pleasure and satisfaction for life if you get a few basics in place in the beginning.

How To Find A Local Florist

By Chris Channing

Flowers are the perfect gift for any occasion- but if you're the indecisive type, the process is going to be a long and frustrating one. There are many florists to choose from on average, of which have vastly different pricing schemes and products. If getting the right florist is proving to be a hard task, there are some solutions to keep in mind.

The new scheme in floral arrangements is to order online. The Internet allows florists to offer gifts, flowers, and other services to almost virtually anyone in the world. This is because they can use over night shipping to ensure the flowers arrive on time, fresh, and ready for making that special someone surprised to receive such wonderful gifts.

Special discounts and pricing options may apply to those who look for florist ads in the business directory for their local area, or even in the newspaper or classifieds. Businesses like to offer those who read printed publications some type of discounts. And although it might not be much, every little bit helps when paying for the more expensive floral gifts that can set back customers quite a bit.

If money is an issue, then one is going to need to compare the price of floral services to other local shops. Sadly this isn't viable for those who live in sparse locations that don't have but one or two florists shops- if even one at all. In such a situation, one should keep in mind that the Internet is always a viable solution, or at the very least a little travel time is all that is required for a second opinion.

Most general stores are now stocking flowers as well, and although this isn't a florist, it can still be a resort for those who don't have access to better options. General stores such as Wal-Mart commonly stock a plethora of different flower arrangements. On special occasions such as holidays, expect much more selection and miniature gifts just like a real florist would create. The quality may be less, but the expense is often cheaper in the long run.

Local floral opportunities are sometimes easier to find than one would think- simply go to a Farmer's Market or visit a local neighbor to see if they have anything interesting growing in their flower garden. This can make the experience more enjoyable, since the gift would be custom acquired, more fresh, and shows the recipient that they are worth more than just a quick order in a store or Internet website.

In Conclusion

Getting gifts and flowers shouldn't have to be such a pain- and it doesn't have to be for those who are gifted in finding floral options online and through alternative means. If nothing seems to work, ask friends and family members where they get their flowers and follow suit.

How To Make Your Home Moving Easier

By Jason Storm

If you are about to move in the coming future, let it be an easy project. Sure, there are a lot of things that's related to a home moving and they all need to be taken cared of, but by knowing the tricks you can make them seem less overwhelming.

If you're not affected by costs, the easiest way is of course to hire a moving company that does the whole move for you, from packing to unpacking. But a lot of people prefer to do the budget version which means there will be more work for you and your family. If you are one of those and about to do a home moving, read on and learn some helpful tips.

One of the most important things to have a smooth move is to prepare a moving checklist with the things you have to pack and all the tasks related to the move and when it has to be accomplished. Tick it off as you go and you will find that this is the best way to help you stay organized during this time.

The packing is preferably started up to a month in advance. If you begin with the goods you don't use very often you can spread the work easily. This will make the packing, which is the biggest part of the move, less overwhelming and you are not likely to experience stress the days before you are moving.

Most people move in the end of the month or the first few days of it, usually on weekends. If that is the case for you too, it's a good idea to contact the moving company about a month in advance to make sure they are not fully booked on the date you wish to do your home moving.

When you are packing you want to make sure that you use boxes that are suitable for their content, they should always be filled to their capacity. Both over and under packing may result in damaged goods. Also make sure that you use a good amount of padding around fragile items. To make the unpacking easier, label each box with its content and the room it belongs to.

It's a great idea to make a plan on how the furniture should stand at the new house. Then they can be put there straight away and you don't have to do extra lifting while at your new home. Let it take the time it takes, both for preparation and for reestablishing at your new home.

If you only know the tricks and stay organized throughout the whole move you might be surprised to see how smooth a home moving actually can be.

Wood Patio Covers - The Best Choice For Your Home

By Ned D'Agostino

Most people spend a lot of time and money making the inside of their home look great. Now think what that home would look like if the same effort were put into the outside. I'm not talking about general landscaping, but some of the more functional elements. Let's look for a second at what is probably the most underutilized part of many homes...the patio.

A simple patio cover would allow you to get a lot more use out of this area. But if you want to do it right, in a way that will make it look beautiful and increase your home's value, then you want to look into wood patio covers. I don't think we need to tell you how good wood can look, but it can provide a lot of functional benefits also.

But first let's talk about why you need a patio cover. The shade it gives will let you sit outside even when the hot summer sun is beating down. And the cover will protect you from other elements as well. Now you can sit outside and enjoy a warm summer rain while not getting wet. You can enjoy a cool shower while staying dry in the evening. And of course we already mentioned it will add value to your property.

Of course there are many options for patio covers, but we think wood patio covers are best for several reasons. Wood allows you to create something unique. And if treated properly it will hold up well against the elements which will constantly bombard it. And of course, wood just naturally looks beautiful.

Start your project by choosing a wood that will compliment your the look of your home. If you want to paint it, pinewood is a good choice because it keeps paint nicely. The problem with pinewood is that it is not available with an anti-rotting agent. Other hardwoods however do, including cedar, redwood and cyprus. If you want to stain the wood, get a long grained wood. This will give you a continuous design that will not be hindered by knots in the wood.

Now that you have your wood, it's time to get a little creative. It's a little more work to add decorative accents but the effort is worth it. Your patio cover will look even better, and add more value. Things like lattice and arbors are great because they are intricate, ornate and gorgeous. Combine then in different ways to get something unique.

When you begin your project, you may be tempted to buy into one of those pre-made patio kits. Know up front that most are made with artificial wood. They are not durable and in fact, in many cases, you'll need to add real wood for support. Why not do it right and use real wood for the whole thing.

Other companies are producing do it yourself wood patio kits. Much like wood floors, these kits use wood tiles that interlock. They have the advantage of being easy to take apart, clean, and even moved to another location if that's what you want to do.

But if you want to get the best cover for your patio, a solid wood patio cover is certainly a good way to go.

By Joseph Then

Let's face it. Pest infestations are a hassle. Calling pest control every now and then can cost a lot of money. So what do you do? The best way to deal with it is by reading this article as it will give you tips on pest control and help you learn more about it.

If you are at risk of facing pest infestation, don't worry. I can give you tips on how you can get rid of they, all by yourself, without the help of a pest control company. Believe me? I don't think so. I suggest you should read on.

Pest control sounds so familiar but what is it actually? Pest control refers to the regulation or management of pests. They are known as pests as they are perceived to be detrimental to a person's health and the ecology. Ants, roaches, rats and also raccoons can be considers as pests. Now, you should get rid of them.

Most people would just spray insecticide to areas which breed or areas in which the pests are. However, I think this solution is only temporary and the smell of these insecticides can be quite unbearable.

Chemicals can be very dangerous if inhaled. Despite that, some companies still use chemicals to get rid of pests. It sounds ridiculous but it is true. That is why I am writing this article; to equip you with the necessary knowledge for pest control, DIY style.

Catching rat can be tricky and sometimes a tiring job if you are not an expert. There are rats around because of the leftover food and sometimes dog food in your garage. To trap a mouse, the best bait to use is raw bacon or peanut butter. Sounds ridiculous? Trust me, it works.

I bet you've seen tons of ants around your yard. The best way to get rid of them is by washing them away with water. Well, that is only temporary. The best way is to find their ant hill and douse it with a couple gallons of boiling water.

With kids running around I am sure the last thing you want to see is a bee hive hanging on the tree. What should you do if there is a bee hive hanging from the tree? I suggest that you purchase a bee trap and hang it.

The next pests we are talking about are the spiders. Somehow, spiders and bugs always find their way into your house. Let me tell you a trick to keep them under control. Buy a bug spray on a duster and dust all the corners of your ceiling. The chemicals last a while and you've coated the places where the spiders like to hang out. You may see a lot of them in the first month but it will cut down soon after.

So, go ahead. You should use the tips and start chasing the pests away. Why call pest control when you can contain them yourself? Maybe you can consider having your own pest control company.

Lawn Care Tampa - Use A Professional

By Jim Carpenter

There is more to caring for a lawn than just cutting the grass on the odd occasion. Certainly just like other plants in your garden your lawn will regularly need to be fed and watered. Therefore it is worth considering employing the services of a professional to take care of your lawn for you instead. In this article we look at reasons why you may want to consider employing a Lawn Care, Tampa company.

As we have already mentioned taking care of your lawn is pretty simple, but you certainly need to be aware of certain things if you want the lawn at your Tampa home to remain looking nice and healthy. By using the services of a professional lawn care service you can actually save yourself lots of time as you won't have to learn the secrets about it.

Before anything else happens the lawn care service which you employ will spend time analyzing the condition of your lawn as it stands currently. They will look at the variety of grass your lawn is made up of as well as how dense its turf is. They will also inspect the lawn to see if it is diseased and what weeds if any are present, along with checking how it is being watered. Each one of these things are very important for them to take into consideration in order that they can then develop a maintenance schedule which will ensure that your lawn looks great and grows well.

Once analysis of your lawn has been completed the company will then decide which of their professional services it is you require. Most lawn care companies will offer the basic services relating to weed, moss and pest control along with fertilization of your lawn. Plus some will offer a scarification service (which will explain in a little bit more detail later on), and also make sure that all fungus and diseases that can attack your lawn are kept under control.

In order to control the weeds in your lawn the company you select should carefully monitor what is growing and then take the necessary steps to actually reduce them. Usually this is done by applying a specialist weed killer to your lawn that kills the weeds but does not attack the grass itself.

Scarification is a mechanical process that is used by lawn care professionals to remove dead moss and comb the thatch of the lawn as it then encourages proper growth in it. Plus it ensures that the lawn can be watered well also. After this process has been carried out don't be overly concerned if the lawn care company you use have to carry out some re-seeding of your lawn.

Generally in order to keep pests under control when they are caring for your lawn the company you choose will use good quality products in order to do so. But before they start using them the first thing they will do is check which pests it is you have in your garden and choose the products ideally suited for getting rid of them.

Many people will not employ a Lawn Care, Tampa service all year round, but will get them to show them how to mow and water their lawns correctly. Then all they employ them service for is to make sure that the lawn is fed properly with the right kind of fertilizer and to help with keeping pests and diseases under control.

Do It Yourself Dried Hydrangea Wreath

By Rachel Ray

Dried hydrangea wreaths are so beautiful and versatile in a home, and a lot of fun to make. You can either buy already dried hydrangeas for your wreath, or dry your own. The biggest tip to drying your own is when you pick them. The best time is right before the first fall frost. If you pick them too early, they will not dry correctly.

Cut your hydrangea flowers and strip any leaves from the branches. Then either hand upside down in a darkened room to dry, or simply stay upright in a vase to dry. As long as you harvest them at the right time, it's difficult to fail. Try to pick some blooms from different plants for a nice variety of color.

For a wreath base pick any type you want, I like either grapevine types or Styrofoam, depending on the look I'm after. Take floral wire and wrap it around the wreath and form a small loop in order to hang it when finished.

If using Styrofoam based wreath, use a low melt point glue gun. Take each larger bunch of hydrangea and break up into smaller florets. Add a drop of glue to each floret and poke into the wreath base. Move from top to bottom, left to right, and inside and outside of the wreath base until it's completely filled in.

What you are looking for here is balance. In shape you don't want any sticking out way beyond the others. You don't want one side fuller than the other, you are also looking the balance of color. Step back and look from a distance and think of overall shape as you're looking.

Color balance is especially important. The reason of doing each bloom systematically over the wreath is to help achieve color balance.

The wreath should be finished now, or you can add small sprigs of baby's breath or other flowers if you want. You can also add a bow for a different effect if you like. Sometimes simplicity is best, but depends on the look you like.

For a grapevine base, the concept is the same as above. If you want to add bows or ribbons, glue them first to the base then glue to hydrangea flowers on it around them. Sometimes bare spaces looks nice to allow sight of the grapevines. Experiment on the design you like.

Try to avoid sunlight in the place you hang your wreath as it will drastically reduce it's life. You can redo the wreath each year by simply stripping off last year's blooms and replacing with the current year's, for a fresh wreath each year.

Typically people expect dried floral arrangements to last for years and are disappointed when they don't hold up. This is a myth. Expect them to look good for about a year, that's really all they were meant to hold up for and still look good.

The Secrets to Playing the Wine Auction Game

By KC Kudra

You might not have even thought about it; however, wine auctions and online wine sales are now big business. Offline wine sales is something you are probably already aware of, but there are online wine sales which are becoming much more popular as time passes. If it's for private companies getting rid of end of ranges, overstocks and the like or charities doing fundraising efforts through auctioning off bottles of wine, there are bargains to be had by average consumers with a bit of an adventurous soul.

Auctioneers forecast a continued but subdued market for wine auctions this year. Wine auctions are the perfect way to find those hard-to-find wine gems, if you know what you are looking for or just to pick up a bargain.

Because of the publicity given to the oldest and most expensive bottles of wine sold at auction, most consumers tend to think wine auctions are for the connoisseurs and the very rich, well let me tell you they are most definitely NOT! Some of the best-publicized wine auctions are for charity, where you can make a gift to the charity and receive a delectable bottle of wine in return.

Wine auctions are usually live events like those you have seen in the movies, but in reality, they are also a great deal of fun. With the exception of high-profile sales like the spectacular events with notables like Andrew Lloyd Webber, most auctions are actually quaint and lovely little gatherings that have a cozy, friendly quality surrounding them. After the trade bids which account for about 70% of the auction, the remaining 30% is made available at bargain prices for anyone who is interested.

With well-heeled benefactors willing to bid thousands for a single bottle of a prized wine, wine auctions become an excellent source of donations for local charities. The beauty of online wine auctions however is the availability of the "hammer" prices after the auction is over and you can browse and search the databases to find the selling prices of all the wines sold. This will give you a great background if you go to a live wine auction either online or off.

Wine auctions are not only fun, but also they are exciting as well. At times, this can lead to impulse buying with a punter paying a higher price than they normally would. Research is the key to staying in the bargain range and out of the fleeced range. Avoid getting carried away. Auctions bring fine, old wines to market that ordinarily stay in wine cellars until they go bad.

Auctions provide a convenient way to dispose of them so that they do not just go bad. The well-informed buyer will get a deal. Many auctions are set up around lunches, which make sense because most of the heavy bidding goes on in the middle of the day. What a way to enjoy your purchase than over lunch.

Choosing Lights for Landscapes Based on Purpose

By Keith Markensen

There are many reasons people choose lighting the exterior of their home and landscape. If you were to take a walk around your property, you might notice areas, where once dark outside, someone could possibly trip. Maybe you have some unwanted animal visitors you want to get rid of. There is always the security of your home you want to consider and lights definitely deter thieves or vandals. Do you have an outdoor living space, you?d like to use at night? When someone is coming over, is your driveway hard to find? If so, adding some lights will help your guests locate your home.

After your survey, take a drive around your neighborhood after dark, looking for ways other homes and businesses have lit their property. What are they using to illuminate their exteriors and landscapes? What lighting techniques give off the mood you are looking for? Make notes of the types of lights used when you find something you like. You'll need this list for the next step.

Sketching out your property, special features, and outdoor living spaces, like a barbecue pit or gazebo, will help in designing your outdoor lighting. So take the time and determine where or what you want to draw attention to. The last step in your design plan is to choose the appropriate light for these areas. So, here are some possibilities for designated areas and after that some tips from professionals.

Pathways, Walkways and Water Elements

Fixtures for these areas come in mushroom shapes, tulip lights, lanterns, tier lights and specialty lights . They provide low impact lights that won't give off a glare. Shields on the fixtures direct light down onto these areas, so you don?t have a runway affect. The goal is visibility not blinding light. This soft lighting effect can be accomplished by installing your fixtures, if they are too bright, behind foliage which will both filter the light onto your pathways and show off your landscape.

Decks, Pergolas, Pools and Hot Tubs

Mounting flood lights or spot lights up high like on trellises or eaves, will give your decks, pergolas, pool or hot tub, the focused lighting they require for night time use. If you?re going for a moonlight effect, mount your fixtures up in a tree. Using a blue filter makes it even more realistic. The light will pass through the leaves creating a romantic ambiance to your outdoor space.

Decorative Ponds, Groundcover, Gardens and Shrubbery

Spread lights give off an even, circular, and soft glow commonly used in beds with flowering plants, ivy like ground coverings, manicured shrubs, and ponds. Fixtures typically come on a post or pole shining the light downwards.

Fade Features, Retaining Walls, Privacy Fences, Entryways, Statues and Topiaries

By installing well lights, spot lights or wall wash lights, you will highlight stone and brick work on your house or retaining walls. Positioning fixtures half a foot to a foot from the element at a 90 degree angle will provide a dramatic effect. Points of entry into your home and poorly lit areas of your yard where an intruder could hide should also be well lit. Doing so will deter burglars and pesky animals roaming around. To create a striking shadow from topiaries or from an original statue, play with distance and angle of fixtures that light them. You will definitely turn heads with this technique.

Trees

To light up trees with little foliage, place fixtures closer to the trunk. Installation at the foot of the tree will give trees a sophisticated, 3-D effect. Moving the lighting on trees with dense foliage to where the edge of its branches are produces a much better upshot.

Mix it up! By using varied lights, placement, and angles your lighting design will be a hit.

Reducing damage from mowing, fertilizing, and watering can be done through the use of well lights.

Use a timer, movement sensors or photocells that automatically turn on and off lighting. It will conserve energy and save you money.

Overlap the light given off by fixtures to avoid unwanted shadowing. Another shadow fix is to install fixtures behind shrubs.

Effects created with different solar lights and angle, areas to light, and careful planning should go into your landscape lighting design. Plans without planning are plans that spell disaster. Happy Planning!

How to Get Children to Eat Vegetable Recipes

By KC Kudra

Vegetables might be one of the best ways to get vital vitamins and minerals into your family's diet but how many times have you told you children to eat their vegetables? Probably quite a few.

Almost all children seem to have an aversion to vegetables. They will kick up a fuss, cry, and push the vegetables around their plate.

Vegetables do not have to be the enemy. All you need to do is find a creative way to cook them and your family will love them - guaranteed!

If you think back, do you remember your mother dropping a soggy lump of broccoli on your plate and ordering you to eat it? Did it look appetizing? Probably not.

There are various ways to encourage your children to eat their vegetables. You might even need to trick them! Broccoli is an example of a vegetable, which is high in vitamin and mineral content, and there are plenty of ways to prepare it. Here are some tips:

Raw - leave a platter of raw broccoli cut up into bite size pieces in the fridge as a snack for your children. Serve it a little bowl of salad dressing for them to dip it in and you will have an instant hit. Make sure you leave the tips of the broccoli on the platter and encourage your child to eat them. If you are creative, you can make a game of it.

Bribery - you might like to tell your child that if they finish their broccoli, there is a treat for them afterwards. Always follow up on this promise and produce the treat else they will mistrust future promises from you.

Cheese - cheese naturally enhances the flavor of broccoli. When you add a cheese sauce, you are changing the flavor and adding texture. You may find your children eating their vegetables before anything else.

Lasagna - add broccoli to lasagna and smother it with sauce and cheese. Your children may not notice that it is there, and if they do, they will find it to be delicious.

Chop it up - if all else fails, pre cook the broccoli and let it cool a little and put it in a food processor. Chop it up until it is not recognizable and add it to whatever dish you are cooking. Your children will not even know it is there.

Shakes - make a milkshake using ice cream milk and a lot of chocolate syrup. Add the broccoli to the shake as you are blending it. The taste of the chocolate will hide the taste of the broccoli. Just make sure that the ice cream that you use has chunks of something in it, that is not hard to find in grocery stores.

Vegetables are high in essential nutrients, especially for growing kids, so it is great that there are so many ways to get them to eat their veggies!

Keeping Some of Your Roses' Top Enemies at Bay

By Thomas Fryd

Insects might be responsible for some of the problems you are experiencing with your roses. These insects can be your roses' worst friends, and will cause major damage if you do nothing to keep them away. These are some of the top ten most wanted enemies of your roses, and some ways to identify them and get rid of them.

1. Aphids

Aphids are the most frequent insect problem you will find in your roses. These insects like to make themselves comfortable in the roses' growing tissues like buds and shoots. Aphids usually are just a problem during the spring and early summer.

Although few - or even moderate - numbers of aphids won't cause much damage to your roses, you need to watch them and make sure their numbers don't spread. A large group of aphids can produce honeydew, a waste product that has the consistency of a sugary liquid. This honeydew can encourage mold; the mold eventually will blacken the roses' leaves. Flowers may decrease and new buds may be killed if there are large numbers of aphids in your roses.

You may not need to use insecticides to control your aphids. They have some natural enemies, including syrphid flies and lady beetles. If these insects aren't around to deter your aphids, you can try washing them off of the roses with water or special types of soaps.

2. Spider Mites

Spider mites may be to blame if you notice that your roses' leaves are drying up and falling off, or if they look like they have numerous small dots (stippling). These pests are so small that you might need a magnifying glass to find them.

Spider mites usually infest your roses because of dry and dusty conditions. It's possible to try to control them by reducing the amount of dust and by making sure that your roses and other plants have enough water.

3. Fuller Rose Beetles

Fuller rose beetles spell big trouble as adults, when they like to chew on your rose bushes. You can usually tell they are there by the ragged edges on the roses' leaves and flowers.

The beetles usually feed at night, when they will chew away at the roses' flowers and leaves. During the day, fuller rose beetles hide on the leaves' undersides.

Pesticides typically are not effective in dealing with these persistent beetles. Your best method to get rid of them is picking them off by hand.

4. Thrips

Thrips have a particular fondness to white or light-colored roses. They damage the blooms by leaving brown streaks on the flowers and cause an immense amount of damage. Thrips are a very big problem when the rose bushes are planted close to each other; thrips move easily from one plant to another.

It can be hard to control thrips with pesticides because the pesticides are mainly effective when the insects are in their development phase and are very difficult to see. The best way to get rid of thrips is to clip and throw away the infected flowers.

5. Caterpillars

Some caterpillars love to make lunch and dinners out of rose leaves. Although the damage usually doesn't threaten the plant, the leaves can look unsightly. Remove the damaged leaves and prune any buds that are damaged.

6. Rose Slug

These insects are actually the larva of sawflies, but look like caterpillars because the rose slugs have legs. You can wash rose slugs off the bushes using a spray of water. One of their natural enemies also may keep them at bay.

7. Leafcutter Bees

These bees make holes in the rose bush leaves and take the leafy material back to their nests.

Although the leaves may not look nice, you really must put up with the bees. There's no effective way to keep leafcutter bees away from your roses. Bees also are good for the plants because they help with pollination.

8. Rose Curculios

These pests, which are about a quarter of an inch long, start dining as young as larvae on your rose buds as they develop. The rose curculios are particularly fond of yellow and white roses.

Rose curculios eat the buds by punching holes in the buds and blooming flowers. They kill the buds before the buds can even open. You can get ride of a rose curculio infestation by getting an insecticide from a local garden or home center.

9. Flat-headed borers

Flat-headed borers can make the canes of the rose die back, and can kill the canes and the entire plant.

To get rid of the insects, you'll need to remove any material that has an infestation. You can keep your rose bushes healthy by making sure they have enough water and not overpruning them during the summer.

10. Scale Insects

These pests get their names from the armored scales that they have. Scale insects also like to cause havoc with the cans on your rose bushes.

They may look like small gray ovals, and don't really move around. Because scale insects have no legs, they are there to stay. The best way to try to control them is to prune infected canes and put pesticide oil on any canes that you don't prune.

The History of Cilantro and its Culinary Uses

By KC Kudra

You might wonder why some cookbooks call for coriander in recipes and others ask for cilantro. Perhaps you are unsure why there are signs in the supermarket saying both cilantro and coriander. Are these two items the same thing? What is coriander and what is cilantro?

The herb cilantro is an herb that is quite versatile and is actually part of the carrot family. You can use it either fresh or dried and it has a very tasty flavor along the line of citrus. The spice, coriander, actually comes from the coriander plant and they are harvested and then dried to be used later. The leaves and stems of the plant are what are known as the herb cilantro.

Cilantro has been used in cooking for many years and can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times. The history of cilantro also shows that it is mentioned in Sanskrit text as well as being found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The Bible Spanish conquistadores introduced cilantro to Mexico and Peru where it is now often paired with chili peppers in Mexican food recipes. Cilantro is believed to be an appetite stimulant and coriander seeds are thought to lower cholesterol levels. The history of cilantro extends to the present day, where it is becoming more popular as an ingredient in the United States, especially in the south and southwest.

Some stores sell Mexican parsley and this looks like cilantro. In fact, it is the same herb and coriander, Mexican parsley, and cilantro all come from the same plant. Cilantro is very versatile in Mexican cooking and Caribbean cooking, the same way as parsley is used in many American recipes.

You can find cilantro in almost any supermarket, located in the produce section. Cilantro is sold in a bunch and is tied up similar to the way that parsley is. Of course, it is fairly easy to differentiate between parsley and cilantro by smelling them or by taking a close look at the leaves. Cilantro has wider leaves than parsley does and it also has a more distinct scent as well.

Cilantro is a herb, which is used, in a lot of different salsas, sauces, dips, and dressings. Some Chinese recipes use Chinese parsley, which is the same herb as cilantro. Cilantro is often added to Asian recipes and is very aromatic when used in salads. This herb is used in many different ethnic cuisines and complements many types of recipes. Likewise, coriander can be used in everything from stews to curries.

If you buy cilantro and bring it home, you should rinse it and shake off the excess water, then put it in a glass of water with just the stems below the water. Cover the leaves with a plastic bag. This is much better than drying the cilantro because it preserves the flavor and it will keep for about a week. If you live somewhere very hot, you can store the cilantro on the top shelf of the refrigerator.

When you are ready to add the cilantro to a recipe, you can crush the leaves with a pestle and mortar. This releases the flavors and aroma of this wonderful herb. If you are cooking with cilantro, add it towards the end because it is a delicate herb and cooking destroys its aroma and flavor.
