Relationships are constantly changing and moving while you are in them. Sometimes you may be in a strong position, sometimes you can be low (like now) A good way to get an ex boyfriend back is by looking at the situation you are in. Did you slagg off compared to before? Use that knowledge to resolve this issue!

If getting back to the old ways is not a short term possibility, this method will still help you to get back a bit of your pride and confidence. More importantly: If your ex boyfriend hears about it, he will be "not amused"!

A second important point is to avoid all contact when possible.

Especially don't go and call him on his cell phone. This will make most men feel like you are trying to control them.

Beautify Your House with Freshly Trimmed Plants

By Keith Markensen

When a plant becomes leggy and is branching out a substantial distance form its base, its time to trim it back. Select the stem you plan to cut and use a sharp razor blade or quality pruning shears to make a horizontal cut straight across the stem directly above a node. If you can manage a four or five inch stem from the section you've just pruned, you can use that slip to begin a new plant.

Pinching the process by which the center growth of a young plant is kept low and forced to grow outward rather than up. The center portion of most all plants will grow stronger because it's in direct alignment with the roots and thus obtains more nutrition. If center growth is removed, that nutrition is transferred to the outside growth. If pinching is to be effective you must do it early. Waiting too ling will create the need to cut the plant way back and you won't get your desire effect.

An alternate type of pinching that's done on flowering plants is meant to increase the size of the flowers the plant will produce. If a plant has a large number of buds, you can assure yourself a heartier and more attractive flower if you pinch off some of the excessive buds. This process is meant to produce 'quality over quantity' by allowing the plants nutrients to be divided among a fewer number of tasks.

Air layering is a type of plant propagation that focuses on the appearance of a particular plant instead of increasing the number of plants available. This can be done even if your are planning on a certain landscaping design for your garden.

Air layering, sometimes called Chinese air layering, is a method used to cut back long-stemmed, leggy tropical plants. Several inches below the lowest branches on the plant, you should make a vertical incision about two inches long. This incision should be made in the stem and should be as deep as a third of the stem diameter. Use a plastic paper as a cover (polyethylene bags in which potting soil is distributed are excellent for this function) and bind sphag-num moss around the cut. After you complete the steps, water the plant thoroughly.

Keep the cut covered and keep the plant thoroughly watered for around eight weeks. You will notice that new roots have formed at the sight of the cut and the plant can be pinched off just below that point. You may then plant your new growth in a pot of regular potting soil. The old plant can be discarded if you so choose. There is no set time to perform this type of propagation, most gardeners agree that spring and fall are the best times, but in general, the success rate is steady year round. - 1432

Choosing and Caring For Your New Foliage

By Kent Higgins

If you have many plants, then likely most of them will be considered foliage plants. Unlike flowering plants, they are not as showy. Instead they make up for it by growing easily and quickly, and acclimating themselves well to any environment in which they are placed.

Foliage plants are an important part of any home or garden. With very few exceptions, they grow and flourish all year long, unlike most flowering varieties. There are many hundreds of different types of foliage plants, including many hybrids and varieties, which can add interest to your garden.

Home gardeners can choose from a nearly endless range of size, shape, leaf form, and color when choosing plants. Many of these can be found in any nursery, and can be grown in any part of the country.

For example, Kangaroo Vine is recognizable through its long, narrow shiny leaves, which are heart-shaped with jagged edges. This plant grows to be three feet tall, and does best in East- or West-facing windows.

Another example, Maranta, is sometimes called the Prayer Plant. This is because of the shape of its leaves, which close up at night. It is a low plant, usually staying under a foot tall. The leaves are a beautiful green, covered with diamond-shapes spots. These spots start off purple when the leaves are young, turning brownish as they mature. These plants require a humid atmosphere, so you should spray them with water regularly, and they do best in an East or West window. They should be fertilized frequently and always kept well watered if you expect them to thrive. If you wish to grow more, they can be propagated with leaf cuttings.

Pandanus are another type of foliage plant which grows well in many climates. However, be sure to select an appropriate species, as some can grow to be fifty feet tall or more. Others have been cultivated for home growth. The popular name of Screw Pine includes both the types grown at home and those living in a natural state. These plants have sword-like leaves which grow in spirals from a common base. They are narrow and can grow up to three feet long in the houseplant variety. The leaves are dark green, with silvery or red stripes at the base. The leaves' edges are spiny, and they have sharp points, making it a perfect outdoor plant just like the yucca plant and the Agave plant. Pandanus grow best when kept as moist as possible, so you should take care to water them often, as well as spray their leaves. Care for Pandanus state that they should be kept in partial shade although they can tolerate a warm atmosphere, and they enjoy East or West windows. Panadus can be grown by cutting off the suckers at the base and rooting them in new dirt.

As you can see, there are many choices when it comes to foliage plants. Most are easy to grow, and can provide interesting variety. - 1432

7 Questions You Need To Know Before Using Shed Plans

By Ryan Henderson

For the beginner constructor it is very crucial that you have everything in place before you embark on any project. Of course the easiest way to do this is to have a action plan. So you have settled, you want to build a shed using a set of plans. Then first we want to put your action plan into place, and start out by listing a series of inquiries you will need answered before you even commence building.

1.What is the role of your shed?

To begin with, you may be thinking its going to be used to stash away just the garden equipment. Think hard about this. Is it going to land up being a family shed? In other words, are the kids going to want to store their sports equipment in there? Or is the wife going to find a different place for the Christmas decorations, in your shed? So make a hard and fast rule of what the shed will be utilized for.

2.Do you want it to be gigantic or smaller?

Now you know exactly what it is going to be utilised for, that will give you the size that you are going to need. Dont forget to plan for the future. If its limited to garden outdoor items, you will most likely be contributing to your collection over the next few years, so you dont want to have to build a shed all over again.

3.Where is the position you intend to build it?

You want to decide what is the best place for it. It has to be some place accessible, without walking through your flowerbeds. Probably tucked away so it doesnt interfere with your landscaping. Again think of the future, you dont want to have to relocate it.

Now is the area you have allotted for it and the size of the shed you want compatible? If not then there has to be a compromise, either in the space or the size.

4.Does in need to be insulated, waterproof, or open?

If you are in a four season climate then you need to decide what seasons you need the shed to be able to resist the most. You need to ensure that it is adequately waterproof. One great suggestion is to use a concrete base. That would prevent moisture from entering the base if it is made of wood.

5. Do you need a building permit?

Know what your local by-laws are for constructing a shed. It wouldnt be nice to get your project finished ,and then have city officials come along and tell you to take it down. Ordinarily you wont require a building permit if you stay within a particular size, but if you have determined to go bigger than whats allowed, you will have to submit building plans for approving.

6.The most important question is the price

Everything you have decided up to now is dependant on your budget. Its kind of tough to set a budget when you havent verified the cost of materials yet. Its your budget thats going to assist you when it comes to the time to get your building shed plans.

7.Do you need to buy shed plans? Where should you obtain it?

You have lots of answers now. The purpose, the size, the budget, and now to resolve the closing doubt. For this you will need to verify what resources are open to you. Your local home hardware and building center, home planners, and of course the internet. - 1432

Wedding Ceremony Songs

By Dane Masters

Most people choose to include music in their wedding ceremony. It has been a long standing tradition to have music for the arrival of the bridal party, and also to have a special song for the bride's last walk as a single women. There is always music that is played after the couple has been declared as married, and this music follows them from the church for their first moments as man and wife.

Wedding ceremony songs can be whatever you want, and you don't have to go with the traditionally used songs if you don't wish to do so.

When it was time for my fianc and I to decide on the songs for the ceremony, we scheduled a meeting with out organist. I told them I did not want to walk the aisle in the most commonly-used tune of "Here Comes The Bride". As I a child, I remember how others used to make fun of that song changing the lines into some uncomplimentary lyrics. What's more, I wanted to use something more to my taste.

An Emotional Reaction

I cannot believe my eyes when I saw him crying real tears while saying that it has been his dream for them to be marching together down the isle with that song in the background. Of course, what can a girl do. If it meant so much to him to the point of crying, I had to change my defiant stance.

Much to my surprise, tears sprung from the eyes of my husband-to-be and he blurted out that he always imagined me walking down the aisle towards him with that song playing. With a few tears, I was overruled, and we ended up using it because I knew how much it meant to him.

This Is a Lifetime Choice, So Take Your Time

Do not rush your choices and it will be ideal if both of you can agree on the repertoire. Observe your fianc, as he might like a specific song included or is averse to a certain type of music, and you should, of course take his choices into consideration. - 1432

A Look At Organic Gardening and Farming

By Amanda Maseko

The idea of organic horticulture appeal to some as a pursuit particularly those who have a green finger. This might not be everybody's cup of tea so consider yourself lucky if you are amongst those who can grow green things out of the blue. Organic gardening involves particular skills: you have to know the type of dirt, what kind of flowers you can place on them, how you will take care of those plants, aside from the many other considerations that you must be aware of when you are serious about it.

All this might seem puzzling to a novice but if you are an experienced hand, then these aspects are already well-known to you and you could comfortably begin the organic way to produce things. This method of gardening is harder than regular gardening as much more effort and labor is necessary to do it this way.

The basic rule of organic gardening is that you will only use synthetic merchandise where it is absolutely needed. This will include the important elements such as the fertilizers and the pesticides. Secure all that you need for your horticulture from the earth and then use them for your efforts. This would enable you to grow anything you wish, like flowers, veggies or any other green you wish. Are you getting the point? This is nothing but working with everything that is provided by nature.

Organic fertilizers

In case you question if there is ever such a thing, you would be surprised to know that you can make it yourself. It is possible to make your very own compost from the dead plats of the garden. Fallen leaves, twigs and animal manure - all this can be used but will depend on the type, and other factors.

Organic Pesticides

Organic horticulture wants, as much as feasible, to stay away from pesticides. But if you can't afford to pick the insects one by one by your bare hands, then you can go to your local food market store and ask for an organic pesticide that is available commercially. The old way really is to be watchful with your garden and take off each pest that you see. Depend on organic pesticide when the worms and other insects are too some in numbers and you cannot control the situation yourself. You can also try to bring in the animals that feed upon those pests. This way, you'll have some help in cleaning those pests up and this also helps the other animals satisfy their hunger.

As is evident, all these things take up a lot of time and unless you can give as much time to this pursuit, or get someone who can partner the responsibilities, it is wise to drop the idea altogether till such times that you are more organized with manpower and time. Organic horticulture really entails a lot of hard work so you had better be prepared to perspire in the process. To ease your tiredness when you are already into it too deep, just think that what you are doing is serving nature. This is a simple way to thank nature for all the goodness that has been presented to you since birth. - 1432

Choosing Indoor House Plants

By Keith Markensen

A wide range of house-plants, grown to have beautiful flowers and foliage, is now available at nurseries. However, many times the life of these plants is unnecessarily short-lived because of unsuitable treatment by their new owners. However, with knowledge of their requirements and appropriate care, these plants can easily be grown successfully indoors.

For the most part, these plants are easy to grow. However, a few require special care because they are tropical plants. Many plants are popular gifts during the Christmas season, but often their new owners do not understand how to provide the correct care and attention. Therefore, you should read a little about your new plant, so that you can help it thrive and keep its full beauty for as long as possible.

If you are a beginner with indoor plants, you should proceed cautiously, first choosing easy to grow plants. Most nurseries can help you choose appropriate plants that will not be difficult to grow. After you have some experience growing these plants, you may wish to attempt more difficult species.

Many unusual species of plants, previously grown only in hot-houses, have recently become popular for decoration in homes. Some of them are native to the tropics, so they require special care. Many can be acclimatized for growth indoors in temperate countries. However, if you are a beginner, you should proceed with caution when choosing such plants. Some are more capable of growing in a hot, dry climate than others, and these should be chosen first, to gain more experience in growing such plants indoors.

Most often, if a plant has thick, leathery foliage, it will respond best to indoor conditions. This is because the leaves are constructed to reduce transpiration to a minimum, which suits them well for the conditions found in a typical living room. Dry living rooms tend to increase transpiration, or the loss of moisture by the leaves. In these plants with thick foliage, there are devices which help the plants to reduce transpiration. The Christmas Cactus is a common example of this type of plant. Indoor houseplants such as the Pony Tail Palm react in the same way.

On the other hand, plants such as the maidenhair fern, Cyclamen, or Fuchsia, have thin leaves. These lose moisture very quickly, which dries out the plant. As a result, they are not easy to cultivate indoors. They grow best in a moist atmosphere, but many living rooms are too dry for them. Any attempt to make the room a more hospitable climate for the plants will be damaging to the furnishings of the rooms. - 1432

Indoor Citrus Trees: 5 Tips For A Healthy Vibrant Tree

By Jim Hofman

If you own an indoor fruit tree, you've come to know what a wonderful addition they are to your home. Fragrant blossoms, sweet delicious fruit, and easy maintenance makes indoor fruit trees perfect for any living space and any level of gardening skill.

Here's five easy to implement tips to help your tree become its absolute best:

1. If you need to add soil to your tree container, never use soil from the yard or anywhere outside. Get a soil mixture with perlite mixed in. You can buy this mix online or at most garden centers. The soil mixture should be an airy potting soil, and you should add soil up to the line on the trunk where discoloration from the dirt used by the nursery ends. Leave enough space at the top of the pot to water thoroughly.

2. These trees like regular watering. For the most part, every week to 10 days is plenty. When the soil is no longer damp, go ahead and water. Be thorough but don't drench the soil. As for light exposure, a western or southern exposure is best.

3. Not only do indoor citrus trees like water, they like to be fed as well. Once a month, fertilize them with a specially formulated fertilizer made for indoor citrus varieties. If you don't want to buy a specialized fertilizer, that's fine. The key ingredients are zinc, iron, and manganese. Most good quality multipurpose fertilizers contain these ingredients.

4. For the most part, people hate humidity, but indoor citrus trees love it. If your living space is dry, particularly in the colder months, add moisture with a humidifier, or mist them frequently. Another good idea is to place your tree container in a tray filled with pebbles and water added to the top of the pebbles. Note of caution: Don't put your tree directly in front of a drafty vent.

5. When it gets warm outside, give your tree some TLC and let it live outside on a patio or balcony. The outdoor sun will do your tree good, but acclimate it to full sunlight gradually. We usually place our three trees in a shady area for a few days first.

More Tips

After you've owned your tree for a while, you'll notice it will produce quite a number of blossoms. Not all of these blossoms will produce fruit, but you can help encourage fruit production. Take a soft small paintbrush and brush the stamens of open blossoms from blossom to blossom. Basically, you're helping the pollination process.

Lastly, for pests, spray your tree with horticultural oil. Your most common pest will likely be spider mites. Horticultural oil will smother the pests and should rid your tree of the problem. - 1432

Flowering Bulbs for a Beautiful Garden

By Keith Markensen

The term "bulb" refers to the below the soil growth or "protuberance" of a group of plants. This growth is a storehouse for the plant. Some "bulbs" are in fact "corms" or "tubers". A tuber is a thick piece of stem with a bud whereas a corm is a stem without a bud. Either way, these "bulbs" will eventually develop into fully grown plants.

There are a great many varieties of beautiful flowers that result from bulbs and they are used by many gardeners because they require little maintenance. They are also seen as a sign of spring - the pretty "snowdrop" being one of the first to appear after the cold of winter.

Planting Bulbs

Bulbs vary in size and the depth to which they should be planted is dependent on this. Generally, the larger the bulb, the deeper it should be planted, from between 3 to 6 inches into the soil. (For the benefit of the reader corms and tubers should be treated the same way.) The ideal way to plant a bulb is to use a spade to cut a hole into the soil, into which the bulb is positioned "pointy" end up and the soil replaced. For soils lacking in nutients, a small amount of bone meal should be added to the base of the hole and mixed into the soil.

It is a good idea to fertilize flowering bulbs each spring, preferably with manure, taking care to prevent the manure from touching the roots or the bulb. The manure should be worked into the soil. To increase the size of the flowers, cut off most of the buds. A regular watering is essential for these plants, even though they have their own "storehouse".

Spring-flowering Bulbs

Of all the popular spring-flowering bulbs, the tulip has to be the leader. Tulips now come in a huge array of spectacular colours, from creamy white to almost black and in between, vibrant shades of reds, oranges, yellows and pinks along with pastel shades of violet and soft pink. However, you should not overlook the other spring-flowering bulbs such as the crocus, friesia, grape hyacinth and iris for their own beauty. The purple flowering bulbs and of course the tiny yet simply beautiful snowdrop are equally beautiful.

Summer-flowering Bulbs

These need the same treatment with planting and maintenance as the earlier flowering bulbs. Amongst the numerous varieties of summer flowering bulbs a few stand out as ideal for the home garden. These include the autumn crocus, which is a very good naturalizer and spreads over a few seasons to create a mass of strappy leaves and flower heads: the spectacular gladiolus with its "lion" like flower heads on a striking upright stem: bearded irises that form a stunning array if planted en masse: a number of the lilies including the huge callas and the pretty peonies which resemble roses in the structure of their flower head;: and the passion vine which creates a soft and luscious effect. - 1432

Tool shed plans for building purposes.

By Dane Masters

Recently, I have found the perfect tool shed plans, and I am almost ready to begin my project. I have been wanting to build a place to put my gear for a long time, but didn't really know how to build a tool shed. Oh, sure, I have done some minor home maintenance, and with my cousin - the contractor - I even once made a porch, but there was something about building a whole building, even if it was a small one of simple design, that really intimidated me.

However when I got my tool shed plans and studied it carefully I realized that this was something that I would be able to do. It would not be difficult to construct the building. In fact after a close scrutiny I realized that I could easily build it.

At one point of time I had almost decided to abandon my tool shed plans to go for a pre-fab shed, however I gave up that idea and decided to go for tool shed plans instead. There are a number of pre-made buildings that are available and these are readily found with many companies. There are also kits that are easily available but my self respect did not permit me to buy a pre-made shed.

I wondered if I cannot even make a tool shed, it is a disgrace. My friends will have no respect for me or my construction skills. It des not matter that you might not know the uses of the tools that you possess. But if I go about to buy a tool shed, I am sure to be ridiculed by my friends.

I have already made arrangements to put my tool shed plans to practice. I have selected the exact place in my backyard where I want it. It is somewhere the kids will not come and is also out of the way. I have done the measurements and have started to bring in the materials. I already have a lot of the materials that is required to construct a tool shed. I have a lot of boards, nails and saws stocked up in the garage. I am now waiting to bring in big beams and my tool shed plans would be ready! - 1432

Grow Fruit Indoors With Indoor Fruit Trees

By Jim and Laura Hofman

One of the latest popular additions to the gardening scene is growing fruit indoors with indoor fruit trees. These small, suited-for-indoors fruit bearing trees are ideal for gardeners of all levels of experience. Even those with very little living space can comfortably fit one of these economical fragrant trees.

Indoor fruit trees are available in wide varieties. Not only are these handsome, fragrant trees ideally suited for indoors, they yield regular size lemons, limes, grapefruits, oranges, and more. You can even own an indoor kumquat tree! If you're worried how tall they grow, don't be ... indoor fruit trees top off at 10 to 12 feet maximum, and only reach that height if they're never pruned.

How Does An Indoor Fruit Tree Arrive At My Home?

When you purchase an indoor fruit tree, expect it to arrive in a standard planting container, usually a 5 gallon size container. There is no specific season for shipping indoor fruit trees - they can be bought and shipped at any time of year.

Does An Indoor Fruit Tree Need Special Care?

Since indoor fruit trees are hardy, they are relatively easy care and suitable for even beginning gardeners. While growers always include specific indoor fruit tree growing instructions, in general there are just a few things to keep in mind. Give your indoor fruit tree plenty of sun exposure, and don't over water. Also, follow specific instructions for your type of indoor fruit tree.

What Is The Fruit Yield From An Indoor Fruit Tree?

You'll normally receive several pounds of fruit from an indoor fruit tree annually. Of course, actual yield depends upon how well the tree is cared for, as well as the specific type of indoor fruit tree you own.

More Indoor Fruit Tree Information

Sometimes an indoor fruit tree will benefit from spending a few months outdoors, in the warm weather. An indoor fruit tree will enjoy time spent on a patio or balcony. When fall temperatures arrive, bring the tree back indoors. Also, a specially formulated citrus fertilizer is useful. These fertilizers are formulated specially for indoor fruit trees and are available online or via specialty garden centers. - 1432

Garden Landscaping Made Easy

By Keith Markensen

It used to be that a garden was simply a place where you grew some varieties of fruit, vegetables for the table and perhaps a few flowers for decoration. These days there are a myriad of landscaping ideas from which you can select one to suit you. Garden landscaping has evolved into a number of purposes and styles together with the changing ratio of humans to space available and the evolution continues. Some gardens are designed with wildlife in mind. Others are places where food is cultivated, or a place to relax, perahps just an area specifically for pleasure such as a flower garden. With these in mind, what do you want to include in your garden?

Garden Landscape Ideas

There are any number of "tricks" you can use to design a garden that is in tune with your personality and requirements. Each garden has five basic elements and you should remember to include these in your garden landscaping plan: color, form, line, scale and texture.

Color needs no explanation. Whilst some people like the idea of using one color throughout, it is usually best to include a number of colors in your garden design. Balance is the key here, so take care to ensure that the colors you choose do not clash or compete for attention.

Next is form, which is mostly to do with the size and shape of objects and how they are balanced in the garden. Just the simple aspect of the size and shape of leaves on a tree can have a dramatic effect on your design.

After form comes line. This means that your design should be such that it "flows" with the movement of the eye. The placement of plants and arrangement of borders will direct the eye around the garden.

The next element is scale and this is concerned with the size of your garden plants as they relate to the design. This may include the giant White Bird of Paradise tree or the small ficus bonsai tree. Once again, balance is important: you do not want a garden with all the small plants grouped together in one area and the large plants including the Giant Bird of Paradise in another. Included in scale are other objects in the garden such as sheds, pools and ponds.

Texture is the final element and it also requires balance. One texture throughout the garden would be bland and uninteresting. Conversely, too many textures can be "busy" and confusing. Create texture in your garden so that it "flows" from one area to another.

The final personal touches to individualize your garden come after all the necessary specifications are completed to your satisfaction. - 1432

Choosing the Right Gardening Tools

By Clinton Maxwell

Are you a gardener or want to get into gardening? You'll surely want the right tools for the job. Even if you have some garden tools, if you'll be doing serious gardening then you may want to upgrade those rusty, bent tools. Here are some tips to finding the right tools that fit your needs.

Trying to figure out the tools you need can be confusing. You'll need to make sure they're durable and easy to use. If you have back problems then you'll need to keep in mind and look for tools that are lightweight. If you have problems with your knees then think about getting tools with long handles so you can do some gardening in a standing position.

Try out tools in the shop before you buy so you can make sure they're comfortable to handle and not too heavy for the task. Keep in mind that some tools will perform better if they're heavier and give you more weight for digging. Check to make sure the grip is comfortable. If nothing feels right or they are too small then you can always add a more comfortable grip or extra padding. If you have arthritis then a wider handle is usually more comfortable to handle.

Also think about the material the tools are made from. There is a variety and it depends on the work you need to do, the longevity of the tool and your budget. Aluminum is lightweight but tends to rust over time. Plastic and carbon fiber is good for soft ground and is inexpensive but may not be strong enough for hard or rocky soils. Stainless steel will not rust and is great for heavy duty use but it is the least lightweight so might not be practical if you have back problems. One way to save space and ensure you get the ideal grip on all of your tools is to buy a set that has interchangeable heads.

Shears (sometimes called secateurs) operate using a spring. Make sure the spring is not too stiff that it's difficult to operate but it still should be tight enough to do the job. Pruning shears should also have sufficient spring action to do the job and be sharp enough to cut through branches. A wheel barrow should be large enough to haul away your trimmings but not so big that it's difficult to navigate. The two wheeled variety works best since you can drive it with one hand.

If you have a large yard or you have a large space to garden then you might think about some power tools. Make sure you consider the power source for the tools. If you don't have one in close proximity then think about investing in rechargeablecordless tools or gas powered tools. - 1432

Can a Steel Building be Used as a Dog Kennel?

By Amy Nutt

If you operate a dog kennel, you are probably wondering if you can utilize a steel building in order to expand the business. The truth is that you can. Many businesses that house dogs are using steel buildings to ensure that the dogs are in a warm and secure place. It is very important that the dogs are as comfortable as possible, which is crucial to the operation of the kennel. It is also important that the quarters stay clean so that the dogs stay healthy.

By providing a healthy environment for the dogs, they will be less distraught that their owner has had to leave them there. Many owners must leave their dogs at kennels while they are on vacation or are traveling on business. As a result, dogs can become upset, but having a nice kennel will keep the dog's stress level to a minimum.

As a kennel

When being used as a kennel, the metal buildings must be insulated. This is so that the dogs do not become too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. Air conditioning, heat pumps, electricity, phone lines, and even plumbing can be installed. This is one reason why the steel building has become a very important structure to many businesses and even homeowners. They are durable, so they stand up to many different weather phenomenons. Once insulated, temperature control does not become an issue at all.

What's most important is that the dogs are protected and they can be secured. Installing an alarm system is easy to do to ensure that no one will break in and steal or harm the dogs. Also important to dog safety is the cleanliness of the steel building. The ease of cleaning these structures is also a fantastic feature that really makes them sell.

It doesn't matter if the cleaning has to be completed on the inside or the outside. When being used as a dog kennel, dogs may make a mess. Fortunately, there are no wooden floors or other type of flooring that is hard to clean. Concrete floors can be laid out to ensure easy cleaning. Even the walls can be easy to clean. They usually just need to be wiped or hosed down. As far as the exterior goes, a water hose can usually do the job and the steel building will look nice when the process is finished. As a matter of fact, a steel building can look just like new for the life of the building, which is a pretty long life.

Space issues

Fortunately, the affordability of the steel building means that more buildings can be acquired if the space is needed. There are plenty of dog kennels that use multiple buildings on the premises or the kennel owners will combine several buildings together. This means that they will place them side-by-side, and create doorways that go from building-to-building. This is a method similar to what is used at craft fairs and county fairs. Multiple steel buildings are pushed together with doorways going from one to the other. By doing this with a dog kennel, all of the dogs can be attended to even easier.

So now you know how convenient it is to use a steel building as a dog kennel. They are very useful and really take away the need to use any other type of structure. The idea is to keep the dogs safe, comfortable, and clean. It is also a plus that the cleaning is a lot easier on you, allowing you the time to take care of those other duties that really matter. - 1432

Enjoy the benefits of infrared sauna

By Mary Stone

For many individuals, a steam sauna might be a luxury that can only be enjoyed occasionally. Especially since it is very expensive to install one, people normally go to health spas and clubs, in order to take in the pleasures of a steam filled sauna. Even though saunas are becoming more and more common, it still remains to be commonly found in the average household.

However, over the past few years, there has been a growing demand for saunas to be available to people, right from the comfort of their own homes. This is why there has been an increased popularity among individuals, for infrared saunas. If you ask around, you can be pretty sure you will find someone who has an infrared sauna at home.

Saunas still remain very popular, simply because it helps an individual feel very relaxed and refreshed, after spending a short amount of time in it. Through the use of steam, the traditional steam sauna heats up the temperature in the room, which has a certain kind of effect on your pores and cells. Your body will begin to relax as your pores open up, and you begin to feel all the tension in your body, ease away.

Today, there are more people getting interested in infrared saunas than every before. In the same way traditional steam saunas do, these infrared saunas generate heat through the use of electromagnetic rays. These rays increase the temperate of the air, thereby heating up your body and leaving it feel relaxed, in the same way a steam sauna does.

Through the use of the infrared sauna, you will also begin to experience some health benefits. The most commonly experience health benefit, is weight loss. Because being in a sauna forces your body to sweat, due to the warm temperatures surround your body, you immediately begin to perspire. Through perspiration, the body then begins to lose water, which contributes to a large part of your body's weight. Also, your body has to work hard in order to produce perspiration, which in turn also helps your to lose weight.

Using the sauna also helps detoxify your body. This is largely a result of the interaction between the high temperature of the sauna, and your skin. The infrared sauna, which works at both the skin and cell level, helps to rid your body of the toxic matter that might be caught in your pores.

Having your body detoxified with the use of the infrared sauna is often a major health benefit, as your body will be rid of many harmful toxins. It is even known to reduce one's cholesterol level, and there have also been reports on people getting pain relief from their joints.

With these benefits, you can be sure that there will only be a growing popularity among people, for infrared saunas. However, you should always remember to seek advice from your family doctor, before planning for any prolonged usage. - 1432

Proper Care for Indoor Plants

By Thomas Fryd

Most of the plants that we put into our gardens are able to obtain their nutrient requirements on their own using the available sunlight and what is in the soil. This is not the case for indoor plants, however; they rely on us to water them and provide the required nutrients.

The estimates of professionals suggest that some 90% of indoor plants are not watered properly - either obtaining too much water, which leads to root rot and other diseases, or obtaining too little. It really isn't difficult to get the amount correct, though. There are some simple tips to look out for to ensure that your plant receives what it needs.

A hygrometer is an excellent investment to make if you are serious about the welfare of your indoor plants. These instruments can cost you a fortune or be very cheap, but they will all do the job equally well.

Some are digital which means they are easy to read and are very accurate and some also contain a thermometer. This can be used to measure the soil temperature, which is another important element in the care of your plants.

There are other very simple ways of checking the water levels. Pressing a finger into the surface of the soil will indicate the amount of water in the pot. Obviously, a wet finger means water is present, but you are also testing for how much water there is. Remember that soil that is moist will "give" or feel spongy, whereas dry soil is hard.

A tongue depressor or chopstick is also a great tool for testing the water content of the soil. If, after placing the implement into the soil for a short time, the wood is dark, you will know that there is water in the soil.

There is another tried and tested method to use. This involves placing a saucer under the pot and then filling the saucer to about 1/3 of its capacity. The pot should then be left to soak up the water in the saucer through capillary action. Continue this process until there is still water left in the saucer and therefore the pot has reached its soak point. Mop up this extra water with a towel and make sure that you have kept a record of the amount of water you have placed into the saucer as this will be a good indicator of the moisture requirements of that particular plant.

For Cactus, for example, checking the amount of water in the soil doesn't involve the disturbance or modification of the soil in any way. We all understand that dry soil weighs less than moist soil, so a simple test is to place the pot on a scale and repeatedly check the weight after the addition of water. Once you have established the "right" weight of the pot, it will be easy to check if the water level is correct by weighing the pot each day. After a time, you will have an idea of the requirements of the pot and you won't have to weigh it any more.

It should also be noted that, whilst the measurement of the water volume is a good guideline, there are other variables that affect plant growth like cactus plants such as air temperature and humidity due to seasonal changes that will dictate the amount of water required by the plant. As such, using a combination of checks and balances should ensure that your plant remains healthy all the time. - 1432

Getting Your Cookware in Shape Before the Holidays

By Jana Banks

Whether you've purchased your kitchenware yourself or you received it as a gift, you're likely hoping to get many years of good use out of your pots and pans. You're right to believe so, because with the right care, your quality cookware should last you a lifetime. Here are some good tips for keeping your pots and pans in tip-top shape.

Let's start with care and cleaning. When it comes to aluminum, copper, and stainless steel, it's a good idea to wash each new piece in warm, soapy water with mild detergent and a soft dishcloth or sponge before using for the first time. After rinsing under hot water, dry each pot, pan, and cover with a soft dishtowel to avoid water spots. Repeat this procedure regularly. Never use steel wool or strong cleanser to scrub, scour only with a nylon pad and warm soapy water.

To shine your metal, use a commercial stainless steel cleaner specific to the material. Apply the cleaner in a circular rubbing motion and rinse it off under warm water. When adding salt to a dish, add it after food has started to cook or boil to avoid salt pitting in your cookware's interior.

Caring for cast iron varies according to the type. For traditional cast iron, use a stiff brush and plain hot water to clean. Never use harsh detergents or steel. Upon purchase, you'll want to lightly coat vegetable oil on the pan before placing it in a cool, dry area for storage. Continue to season your pot periodically as you use it (see more below). Enameled cast iron can be cleaned with a mild detergent and does not require seasoning. Always preheat either form of cast iron prior cooking.

For your non-stick cookware, you'll want to always be sure to follow the manufacturers care guidelines to prevent voiding the warranty should your cookware fail. Generally, most non-stick is not dishwasher safe and should be hand washed with mild detergent and a soft sponge. Use only plastic, coated, or wooden utensils when cooking to prevent scratches. Non-stick sprays are not recommended as they create a sticky finish. Instead choose butter or vegetable oil if needed when cooking.

To prevent food from sticking, it's a good idea to periodically season the interior of your plain stainless, copper, and aluminum pots and pans by rubbing a few drops of cooking oil into it and then rubbing it clean. To season your traditional cast iron periodically, first wash it with warm detergent and towel dry. You'll then want to rub a thin coat of vegetable oil inside and then bake it for one hour at 200 degrees.

Some other general care tips worth remembering: To avoid warping, always preheat your cookware slowly and never poor cold liquid into a hot pot. Food sticking? It's a good idea to avoid intense heats to prevent your food from sticking. And remember to follow the above seasoning and cleaning recommendations as well. - 1432

Washing Your Houseplants Can Add Needed Moisture And Kill Pests

By Kent Higgins

For most home gardeners, insects and other pests, as well as plant diseases, are not a very important issue. In most cases, the death of your house plant can be traced not to insects or mold but to neglect and improper care, as well as selecting the wrong plant for the environment.

However, insects and disease can sometimes claim house plants, so understanding these issues can help you avoid the death of your favorite plant. Understanding how to provide proper care and take the necessary precautions to avoid bugs and disease can help you avoid such issues, and even prevent them from making it into the house. You should be especially cautious when bringing home a new plant, and when bringing your plants back into your home after letting them spend the summer in the garden.

No matter where a new plant has come from, either from a florist or nursery or as a gift from a friend, you must check it over carefully for insects who may hitch a ride into your home. Washing it down before bringing it inside can also be an effective precautionary measure. Both of these steps are also necessary for your own plants which have spent time outside, where they may have picked up insects. These simple steps can save you a lot of time later when all of your plants have been affected by a new pest.

Another useful preventive measure you can take is to spray down your plants every week. Ideally, this should take place in a bathtub or on your deck or patio, where you can really spray them well without making a big mess. While you should not spray African Violets and other plants wit hairy leaves, your other plants will love being sprayed so that both sides of their leaves are completely drenched. The leaves will get the moisture they need in order to thrive indoors, and the water will also wash off any insects which may have found their way to your plants.

Most house plant seedlings can be attacked by pests and bugs as well as the disease called "damping off." To avoid it, use sterilized starting mixture, which can be purchased at any nursery. Because the fungus that causes "damping off" grows in the dirt, using sterilized soil will decrease the chances of this fungus affecting the seedlings you grow in it. However, if you are unfortunate enough for it to affect some of your seedlings, there is only one remedy. You must throw away those that have it in order to avoid its spread to your healthy plants. - 1432

Send Flowers: The History of a Beautiful Tradition

By A Nutt

Flowers make the ideal gift for nearly every occasion. Whether someone has celebrated a birthday, there are flowers specially arranged for flowers or lost a loved one, there are funeral flowers. The vast range of colors and types that are available means you can literally find something for every occasion. People love to get flowers, too, so that makes them an even better gift. But how did we get started giving flowers?

In the Beginning

No one knows exactly who gave the first bunch of flowers, but it could easily go as far back as Adam and Eve! Toddlers automatically pick wildflowers to give to their mothers, drawn by the colors and prettiness. We do know, however, that each culture has used flowers for different reasons. In Ancient Greece, flowers were considered to be property of the gods, making them very special. There are accounts of flowers being given as a gift for many thousands of years. The majority of these would have been flowers that where picked wild, plus a few from the garden.

The Language of Flowers

In Victorian times, flowers were used to express more than just admiration or love. Entire letters could be written with blossoms alone! Each flower has a specific meaning . . . though the exact meaning depends on a variety of factors, including color and size. For example, a red rose means "passion", pink means "romance" and coral colored roses mean "friendship".

Back in the day, people knew the meanings of all the most common flowers and this made each and every bouquet full of much more meaning. A young man might send a girl a bunch of wildflowers, but it would really be a message in disguise! Even today, some people enjoy learning the meaning of flowers and adding these special flowers to their bouquets. It really adds a whole other dimension to a simple bunch of mixed flowers.

This time period was definitely the most meaningful of all for flower giving. With the extra messages contained in bunches of flowers, it was one of the big gifts of the day.

Modern Flower Giving

Traditionally, men gave flowers to women, but now it`s quite acceptable to give a man a bouquet of more masculine blooms, too. Even children get into the act! Try giving a little girl a bunch of birthday flowers and you`ll make her day.

These days, it`s quite common and acceptable to give flowers as gifts. We aren't restricted to simply wild flowers or those available in the garden anymore, either. Now there are tropical blooms and more delicate varieties of flowers available year round. This makes giving flowers a more exciting experience.

With the ability to grow many flowers in hothouses right in country and also the ability to import those that don`t grow well in the greenhouses, your options at the florist are stunning. No longer are we restricted to daisies and roses. Now you can select a delicate orchid, bird of paradise or lily for that special someone. It really opens up the realm of possibilities, thanks to airplanes and special technology.

Another modern convenience is the internet, which lets anyone anywhere in the world buy flowers online and have them delivered to a specific destination. You could easily be in the US and have flowers delivered to your mother in Spain! This turns the art of giving flowers into something so easy to do that you don`t even have to leave your own home or office. Just find a good website and you can send flowers without ever having to set foot in a florist shop. - 1432

Building Deck Railings & Decks

By Adam Peters

This article is about building decks and deck railings and making the decision of whether to build it yourself or hire a deck contractor.

Building Decks & Deck Railings

Summer is just around the corner and with it comes all the fun times you always spend outdoors reading, soaking up the sun or entertaining friends. This year you would like the times to be a little more special for you and your friends. Your idea to build a deck is the perfect solution. A deck will keep you off the wet grass and the many ants that summer time brings as well as giving you a place to put that beautiful lawn furniture you have been eying up at the building supply store. Although people that have experience doing this sort of thing will tell you building a deck is a breeze, it's a major source of home improvement and needs to be thought out carefully. Decks not only add to your summertime fun but also increase the value of your home, so make sure it looks as good as it can when it's finished.

Considerations to Make Before You Build Your Deck

Some of the things you will need to consider before deciding on building your deck are material, design and location of your deck. Most of these things will be determined by your budget. Keep in mind, you're doing more than just building deck railings, but rather the entire deck from start to finish. Once you have determined your budget and what can afford to spend, you can start figuring out size, material, style and location. With these facts in mind, you can begin the planning of building your deck and deck railings in the most cost-effective manner.

After you have made a layout of what you want your completed deck to look like, you're then able to decide if you can build it yourself or need to hire a contractor. Most people choose to hire a contractor to ensure the safety, beauty and completeness of their deck in a timely fashion. If you want to add additions to your deck like built-in benches or planters, now is the time to decide this, not after the construction is started. Once you have this all planned, you can begin looking for contractors. A great way to find a good contractor is to ask around. Perhaps friends or relatives have recently used a contractor to build their decks. This is the best reference source.

Finding the Right Contractor

Once you have found a few contractors, begin speaking with them about what you want in a deck and get estimates. You can give them a general idea of how much you have to spend but don't give them an exact dollar amount or you'll find all the bids you get are very close to the amount. Ask to see his license and about his references. Everything that you want done in your deck-building process should be listed in the written contract, including cleaning up the mess. If you have done your homework, you know the most reasonable place to get the lumber and materials for your deck. Don't let your contractor talk you into getting it elsewhere unless he has a very good reason for his choice. It's your deck and you're paying for it so the final decisions should be yours.

You can breathe in the sweet smelling flowers in the evening breeze as you are gathering your herbs and vegetables. But while you're doing this, make sure you have your hands protected with a good pair of leather gloves.

As a beginning gardener, make sure that you choose the right gloves, because they can be the most important thing that you have. Here are a few tips that can make purchasing your gloves a less difficult task.

You should always try to get a good quality leather pair of gloves that will last you a long time. Gloves get a hard workout. A pair of good general purpose gardening gloves will be great for what ever task you put them to. The ones with the cloth backing allow you to work in your garden, comfortably keeping your hands cool at the same time.

When you prune your roses you stand a chance of tearing up your arms from the thorns of the rose bushes. A good pair of leather gloves with gauntlets will protect your arms from those sharp thorns.

Pesticides are harmful and can absorb through your skin, so make sure that you use a pair of neoprene gloves to keep you healthy, while you're treating your garden for insects and diseases.

Get yourself a pair of rubber gloves with cotton lining for those times when you're working in the mud after a good rain or after you've watered your garden.

In the early spring its cold out, so you need to protect your hands from the cold while planting your seedlings, which can be pretty tender and delicate. Fingerless gloves work well for this type of task.

The last tip I will give you is, make sure that your gloves fit well. You need to protect your hands from blisters, mud, dirt, and cold and a good quality pair of well fitting gloves will do just that.

Organic fertilizer are they feasible?

By Ornella

Organic gardening can very well pass as a pursuit for some individuals and this can be true if you are the type of person who has the passion for gardening. This may not be everybody's cup of tea so think yourself lucky if you are amongst those who can grow green things out of the blue. Organic gardening has different aspects to it, which you must be familiar with, for instance, what type of dirt you have, what you want to grow on them, and how you might tend for the plants.

All this may seem confusing to a beginner but if you are an experienced hand, then these facets are already well-known to you and you could comfortably start the organic way to produce things. This method is particularly special as well as hard and it will require you to double your effort as compared with regular gardening.

The essential rule of organic horticulture is that synthetic tools are used only when it is necessary and not otherwise. This will include the essential components such as the plant foods and the pesticides. You can actually get from the earth what you require then use it for your organic venture into gardening. These elements will help you to grow something new: flowers, vegetables or whatever greens you may want to grow. Hopefully you are getting what we are trying to say, and that is this is one way to work in conjunction with nature.

In case you doubt if there is ever such a thing, you would be startled to know that you can produce it yourself. You can actually perform composting on the dead plats found in your garden. Things that you would require are fallen leaves and twigs and animal muck but it would count of the type used and other factors.

Organic gardening wants, as much as feasible, to stay away from pesticides. Usually handpicking of several worms and other insects is not feasible so go to the local store and ask for organic pesticide, which are easily available and ready to use. The traditional way is to keep a vigil on your garden and as soon as some insects are located, kill them. Go for organic pesticide, when things tend to go out of hand and it is no longer manageable. You can also try to bring in the animals that feed on those pests. This way, you'll have some help in picking those pests up and this also helps the other animals satisfy their hunger.

As is evident, all these things take up a lot of time and unless you can devote as much time to this hobby, or get someone who can partner the responsibilities, it is wise to drop the idea altogether till such times that you are more organized with manpower and time. Organic gardening really entails a lot of hard work so you had better be prepared to perspire in the process. When you are feeling down and out during your horticulture adventure, just think of the benefits you are returning to nature. This is a simple way to give thanks to nature for all the good that has been gifted to you since birth. - 1432

Having a Great Lawn from Great Grasses

By Kent Higgins

Selecting seed for your yard can be an intimidating and daunting task. The first thing you'll need to consider is the lay of your lawn, shade versus sunlight, and the amount of water your yard typically receives. Most commercial seeds are formulated for sun and shade, but if you're lawn will receive less than three hours of light, or you're planting under trees, you may want to consider a specialty seed.

Kentucky bluegrass is a top choice for grass. There are years when it is difficult to find. One downside to bluegrass is its need for a midsummer rest period. Kentucky bluegrass will also stain your clothing more easily than other grasses, but it is a hearty, easy to grow grass that will resist weeds.

For small lawns or gardens, you can consider a 'bent' grass. Colonial bent is a widely used choice. It thrives under less than stellar conditions and is low growing. It will spread quickly and requires frequent grooming and top-dress.

If you're looking for a combination, Redtop combines very well with Kentucky bluegrass because its rest period is different from that of bluegrass. Another plus to Redtop is that it will not stain your clothes.

Chewings fescue is a shade grass. It matures late in season and resists midsummer drought conditions. It will grow well in acidic soils and is also great in the fight against weeds.

Rye grass is a plus for new lawns. It's tough and quick growing that helps keep out weeds while the lawn grows.

Bermuda grass will grow well in sandy areas and is commonly used in the South.

Some people like look of clover in their grass, others find it a nuisance. The plus to clover is its ability to grow in poor soil and it typically prevents weed growth. The downside is that it tends to look patchy and sports white blossoms.

Generally, mixing grasses will provide a more satisfying look. Varying grasses are active during different times of the year and will keep your lawn in continual lushness. Mixtures also tend to fair better against weeds than do single seed grasses.

If you're not content to grow grass by planting grass seed in spring, you should consider alternate ground cover. Juniper, wild trailing rose, and evergreen vines make excellent ground cover in areas where mowing would be difficult or a unique landscape design is desired.

Lily of the valley and sandwort are also excellent ground covers that will add to the appearance of your lawn.

Whatever your choice for the look of your lawn, educating yourself on the options as to what plants do you really desire and when to plant them on spring or at other time will guarantee that you get the most bang for your buck and may even allow you to grow grass from seeds the best looking lawn on the street! - 1432

Are Retractable Awnings Worth the Investment?

By JC Mims

What exactly do retractable awnings do? Well, of course they provide shade as we all know, but they are also great for adding a little more space to your living area. This is especially true if you live in a small area where every little bit of space counts. This can also be a great place to sit at night when the stars are out and the evening is comfortable.

If your home is not equipped with a garage, an awning will provide protection from the elements as you enter and exit your home. No more getting soaked while trying to bring in the groceries. In most cases, the awning will attach to your home just beneath the eaves.

The addition of a retractable awning can provide your ideal space that you can decorate with plants, patio furniture, and maybe even a relaxing fountain.

Set up your outdoor area with a patio table, chairs, and a grill and you have the perfect spot for outdoor BBQ's, but without having to worry about hot Summer days, or rain.

This can be a great energy saver when it comes to cooking and air conditioning. The breeze and the grill will be enough to have you spending hours outdoors that you did not spend before.

If you have a hot tub or Jacuzzi on your patio or deck you can now keep it protected. You will enjoy several new found benefits. An awning will keep debris out of your personal spa and provide a more entertaining atmosphere.

The size you need depends upon the purpose for which you are going to be using your retractable awning. The largest type lateral arm awning is going to be about 40 feet wide by 17 feet out from whatever it is attached to. The awnings have a drop of about three inches for every foot that they extend. This is why the maximum extended length is about 17 feet.

Be sure to closely measure the area that you want your awning to cover. This will give you a good idea of the size that will best suit your needs. Be sure to note the location of any windows or doors so you can make sure you have plenty of clearance. A window that has an awning covering it will realize a noticeable difference in the amount of heat that enters the home.

A cool gadget that you can add is a sensor that automatically knows when to open and close the awning according to the weather. When the awning receives the set amount of light it will open the awning will roll itself out. As evening approaches the sensor will automatically retract your awning. Be sure to choose a quality retractable awning to ensure minimal headaches and aggravations down the road. - 1432

Advantages of a glass railing for your house and deck

By Adam Peters

This article informs the reader about how the installation of glass railings can lend a sophisticated feel to the house and the deck. It also mentions the various benefits of having a glass railing in the house.

The great thing about glass railings are that they raise the tone of your deck and home and impart a sense of elegance to the surroundings. Along with this, glass railings provide the very obvious advantage of an uninhibited view of the garden.

While we are on the topic of railings it is important to mention that in general, railings designed in the modern style make a huge difference to the ambience of the house and the deck. They send forth a strong statement of style. This has also been made possible because of the use of materials that were not in vogue earlier for the construction of railings. The modern railings made from glass are the ultimate symbols of aesthetic taste and panache. You get an unobstructed view of the outside world and it gives an ultra-modern look to the deck. Since glass is not used very commonly, it also increases the perceived value of your deck and house.

However, before you make up your mind to install glass railings, there are certain things that you need to consider. Do you believe in simplicity when it comes to your house decoration and general lifestyle? If you do, then glass railings might appear incongruous on your deck. On the contrary, if you have an inclination for the ornate as far as house decor is concerned, then glass railings are just what you are looking for. The reason is that glass railings have a very opulent look which does not complement a modest house or deck.

If you have a house that is very luxurious, then glass railings will definitely enhance its charm. Placing bright lights at strategic positions leads to the reflection of light on glass and this will add a sense of glitter to the house. Since the installation of glass railings requires exceptional talent for it to bring about the desired effect, they are made in custom made form only. The biggest advantage with glass railings are that they are virtually zero-maintenance compared to railings made from other materials. There is no danger of the glass being affected by weather conditions and it also does not need painting or polishing after a certain period of time. The cleaning of glass is very easy compared to maintaining railings made from other materials. Since modern technology has facilitated the creation of toughened glass, the chances of glass breakage are practically non-existent, so you need not worry about this too, when installing glass railings on your deck. All these reasons make glass railings a very attractive option in sophisticated houses.

Comfort Of A Screened Porch

By Adam Peters

This article is about screen porches and the different variations including deck awnings. It discusses ways to make your porch more stylish.

Comfort of a Screened Porch

With people spending more time outdoors than ever before, it's important to have a space that radiates style while, at the same time, being comfortable. Whereas at one time decks were only built on certain homes, today the deck is becoming an important part of the home design. In fact, many people include it in their original house plan. As wonderful as decks are for family and friends, you'll only want to be there certain times of the day when bugs and mosquitoes are not present. Screened porches are the perfect choice for this dilemma.

Getting relief from the bugs is only one reason why many homeowners are choosing to go with a screened porch. The majority of the time we desire spending time on the deck is during the warm summer months. Relaxing in the lounge chair can get old real quick when you have the hot sun beating on your body. You deal with the hot sun during the day and the bugs at night. Is there any relief from either of them? The screened porch is the perfect answer, especially if you have deck awnings as well. Not only is a screened porch the perfect place for your relaxation and a great place to entertain guests, but it also adds to the value of your home.

The Size of Your Screened Porch

When you're planning the design of your screened porch, some considerations will be taken when deciding on the size. If you have a small family and not many guests, you won't want or need a large deck or screened porch, so why spend the extra money on something you won't fully utilize? If you're planning to have furniture in your screened porch, situate the furniture so you know how much space you'll need to be comfortable. When you decide on a shape, keep in mind that there are varieties of choices including hexagon, square, oval or rectangle.

Important points to Remember with Your Screened Porch

What you may consider as a simple porch can easily be transformed into a screened porch with the addition of a screening and a screen door. If you're adding to an existing porch, you can purchase the screens and affix them to the porch easily. You'll love the sudden breeziness and bug-free atmosphere your screened porch gives you and your family. If your screens are added separately to the porch, you have the option of easily removing it for the winter months.

You'll be spending time in your screened porch in the evenings as well as the daytime so make sure you use some sort of lighting and electrical fixtures. To avoid hazards, make sure you have your fixtures installed as per the National Electric Code requirements. You'll also need to make provisions to avoid damage due to wind or rain storms. Also, make sure you have proper drainage. If you make sure to follow all these simple but necessary guidelines, you'll have a beautiful screened porch to enjoy for years.

Things to be considered when planning your deck

By Adam Peters

This article gives useful tips on how to go about constructing your deck. It also mentions the different things you should consider before selecting a contractor for the job.

With the advent of summer, people start entertaining ideas of enjoying the outdoors rather than staying cooped up inside the house. Holding parties in the garden holds a lot of attraction during this time but many people are prevented from doing so because of the fear of insects and ants present in the grass which could dampen the festivities to a great extent. This is not an insurmountable problem as building a deck will fulfill all your summer dreams of having a great time and inhaling the fresh air of the garden whenever you wish to do so.

Even if you are not the socializing kind, the deck is a great addition to the house as it will give you ample opportunities of having breakfast, reading a book or just lounging in the comfort of your backyard amidst the beauties of nature. However, since this is a major construction you should not rush into it hastily but devote ample thought to the whole procedure.

To begin with, you need to fix a budget for the deck and then think about the location, design and materials that you are going to use for it. After this has been done, you have to look for a reliable contractor who will build your deck in a competent way without spending too much money. Before consulting the contractor, it is advisable to make a list of things you want in the deck like built-in benches, plants etc. as this will enable the contractor to give you a correct estimate.

You also need to be careful when selecting the contractor for your deck. Certain things you need to verify are the experience and level of skill that the contractor possesses. Finding out the past record of the person will help in arriving at a correct assessment of his knowledge and talent as far as building decks are concerned. You also need to look at the contractor's license before accepting his services.

Another thing you can do is ask for references and use this to measure his skills in deck building. A written agreement with the completion date specified clearly is a pre-requisite before you start work on the deck. In addition, if the contractor has insured his business and employees, you do not have much to worry about.

Since building the deck will happen outside the house, it won't create too many problems for you and you can continue your daily activities without re-arranging your schedule. Do check at regular intervals, though, whether the work is progressing satisfactorily and you are getting the kind of deck that you always aspired for.

Have You Considered A Jade Plant For Indoors?

By Keith Markensen

Because they are easy to grow and extremely tolerant of a variety of conditions, jade plants are an ideal plant to grow indoors. They grow well in pots and are happiest in warm, dry conditions. They can tolerate long periods of dryness due to their succulent qualities and they do not require much in the way of fertilizer.

These plants will live for many years and can grow up to five feet tall, even when indoors. They are the perfect planting for a large, empty corner of a room, with their dark green leaves that are quite often edged in red. When they flower, they have clusters of pink or white flowers that are star shaped and these provide a lovely display.

To prevent disease and insect attack, they do require some maintenance, just like any other plant.

If the soil is allowed to remain dry for a long period of time, they will suffer from leaf drop. In contrast as well, if they get wet feet they will develop root rot. The soil should be kept moist during the warmer part of the year and there should be longer time intervals between waterings in the cooler months.

So long as these plants have well draining soil and a moderate and regular amount of water, they will thrive. The best soil for them is a cactus mix to which has been added organic matter. A good balance is 1 part sphagnum peat moss to 3 parts coarse sand.

Jade plants should be exposed to full sun, close to a south facing window, for periods of four hours or perhaps more. Ensure that the temperature is not too high, though - the best range is between 65-75 degrees F (18-24 degrees C). Jade copes well with night time temperatures around 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). If the plants starts to show browning of the leaves it should be moved to a spot where it gets less direct heat from the sun.

The feeding requirements of the jade plant are simple. It will only require some liquid fertilizer every three to four months. A standard fertilizer will be fine. Overgrowth is not common in jade plants and they don't mind their roots being crowded. It is a good idea, though, to leave any feeding until after Winter, when the plant is dormant.

Mealybugs and spider mites enjoy snacking on many popular houseplants; and jade plants are no exception. Mealy bugs can be banished easily - just wipe the leaves with an alcohol-soaked cloth. Spider mites require a little more effort, but they can be brushed off from your beautiful houseplants when they are evident or sprayed if required.

Wiping the leaves with a wet cloth to remove any build up of dust is beneficial to the plant as it will help the plant to "breathe" through their pores, resulting in efficient transpiration. Dead leaves should also be trimmed to keep the plant looking healthy and to minimize disease. - 1432

Getting A New Deck Railing System

By Adam Peters

This article is about getting a new deck built by a professional as well as things to watch for when hiring a professional to do the job.

Having a Professional Build Your Deck

Having a new deck built can be very exciting, but there are different important things to consider before you begin. If you're not a DIY kind of person or just don't have the time, you'll want to hire a contractor. This can be as complicated as trying to build it yourself if you don't know how to go about hiring a good reliable deck contractor.

Deck Contractors

Deck contractors are professionals in all aspects of deck building or rebuilding whether it be replacing broken railings, building a new deck railing system or building an entirely new deck for you. Choosing the right deck contractor takes time and consideration, more so if you have little or no experience in hiring and working with contractors. Before you hire one specific contractor, you'll need to get estimates from the various contractors.

Decide What You Want

Before you can even think about speaking with a contractor, you need to know what type of deck you want as well as how much you can afford to spend. Knowing how much you have to spend is simple enough, but deciding on what you want in a deck may take a little longer. Look around your neighborhood at other people's decks that you like. If you find particular decks that you like, inquire as to who their contractor was. Another option is to get some magazines that specialize in home building or outdoor furniture and see if they offer something you like. Many of these magazines will break down exactly what materials and how much you'll need for your deck. This can prove to be quite helpful, as it will give you a chance to price the materials to see what the parts will cost you at various stores.

Finding the Right Deck Contractor

Once you've found some good contractors, call them and schedule an appointment so they can come to your home and look at the site where you'll want the deck built. Show them what you want for a deck and have them give you a written estimate so you can begin comparing estimates. Try to stay with contractors that have at least three years experience. This usually guarantees that the builder will give a warranty with their work. Don't assume this, however. Always ask if they guarantee their work and for how long.

Make sure they have a contractor's license and ask to see the license. This is important so in case something happens, you can avoid legal liabilities. A licensed contractor will also have insurance that will cover workman's compensation and general liability. Before you hire any contractor, ask to see the policy to ensure that it is paid up to date. References are also important, but only if you check on them. Get a firm quote from the contractor stating what the final cost will be as well as a time schedule for the completion date. If possible, have them set milestones of how much they can get done in a certain time period.

The importance of a deck plan

By Adam Peters

This article illustrates the significance of a deck plan before starting with the construction of the deck. It also advises the reader on the various details that need to be included in the deck plan.

Before you begin with the construction of a new deck, it is essential that you have a deck plan that contains minute details of various aspects of the deck.

As we all know, a beautiful deck makes a great difference to a house. Having a comfortable deck ensures that you enjoy quality time with your friends and family without being confined to the walls of your house. This is the reason why before you begin with the building of your deck, you need to have a deck plan that includes a list of things like the materials that will be used for constructing the deck, the architectural plan, the cost that will be incurred while making the deck etc.

If you are wondering how to go about building a deck plan, there is no need to worry as you will find plenty of architects and designers willing to take on the job. On the other hand, if you have some technical knowledge in this area, you can undertake the task yourself by drawing some sketches or having a detailed blueprint. What will make your job easy is the availability of deck planning software programs that can significantly help you when you are formulating the plan.

Apart from such software programs, there are plenty of books and magazines that deal with the subject and will provide you with interesting ideas as to the designing of your deck. You can also rely on the internet for a multitude of illustrations and pictures on various decks and incorporate some of the aspects into your own deck plan. In addition to all these, you can exercise your own creative streak and design a deck that looks trendy and has a lot of fun features which will make it ideal for parties and other social gatherings.

When creating the deck plan, do make sure that the size of the deck complements the size of your home and does not feel incongruous. Location of the deck is another aspect that needs to be thought out carefully. In this respect, you have to decide which rooms of the house will be connected to the deck. Again, privacy is an issue that could be very important when designing the deck. If you have a pool in the house, or if your backyard has a beautiful view facing one side, then you could build the deck facing that particular direction. Finally, you also need to inquire about the permits that are relevant for building a deck in your locality and obtain the ones that are necessary before starting with the work. These are some of the factors that you need to incorporate into your deck plan so as to avoid future complications and have a fantastic deck that meets all your needs.

How installing an awning can help in enjoying the deck better

By Adam Peters

This article highlights the importance of a good awning for the deck. It also gives information about different types of awning especially focusing on the lateral arm retractable deck awning.

Summertime poses a lot of problems as far as relaxation in the deck is concerned. The hot sun can make it difficult for you to make full use of the advantages of the deck and it is in this respect that a deck awning becomes very useful.

The great thing about deck awnings is that you will find a wide range when it comes to designs, types and sizes. It makes a lot of sense to opt for a retractable deck awning as you have the freedom to sit in the shade or the sun depending on your mood. Since these types of awnings are fixed to the wall of the house, another advantage is that it not only shades the deck but also the wall of your house and so gives some relief during summer.

Another type of awning is the lateral arm retractable deck awning. The benefit of this awning is that it does not need vertical supports. Apart from this, it can provide a width of as much as forty feet and it is also equipped with a horizontal wing of about thirteen feet. This awning comes in colors that complement the look of almost all types of buildings and is pretty much in vogue among home owners.

Another reason for the popularity of these lateral awnings is that it is very easy to install to the wall of the house. Usually, an electrical motor or a hand crank is used for operational purposes. When this awning is not in use, it does not look messy as the arms of the awning are fixed to the walls. Other great features of this awning are the sturdy fabric that repels water along with the rain and wind sensors that can be installed to it which facilitate the automatic closure of the motorized awning on the basis of the weather. Also, you do not have to be content with a standard fabric for all awnings in this category as there is plenty of choice in designs and weights with reference to the lateral arm retractable awning.

Apart from the features mentioned above, there are some other awning attachments that you can make use of to increase the functionality and sense of comfort that your awning provides to the deck. If you fix bug screens to your awning, you won't be troubled by bugs and other insects.

If these awnings do not suit your sense of style, then you can always try out other awnings like the butterfly awnings that are operated by 'hand crank'. All you need to be sure about is that whichever awning you choose, it facilitates a relaxing and enjoyable time in your deck.

Vinyl Deck Railing On Your Pool Deck

By Adam Peters

This article is about pool decks, their many purposes and the many different styles of pool decks you now have to choose from.

The Beauty of a Pool Deck

Among many changes going on in the world is the fact that people are spending more and more time outdoors. They work because they have to work to pay the bills. However, in their spare time they're choosing to spend their time outdoors. The addition of decks to the home gives them the perfect place to spend their time outdoors. Cooking out, reading, laying in the sun, entertaining or just relaxing are some of the many things people do on their decks. Whether your deck has a vinyl deck railing or elaborately designed wood railing, you deck is a place for fun as well as adding beauty and value to your home.

Another choice many homeowners are making is adding a pool and pool deck to their home. This is the perfect way to add some beauty to an otherwise drab backyard. It's also something your entire family will enjoy. Your backyard will also be the envy of your friends. Although a pool by itself is a great addition to your home, a pool deck will enhance the beauty and functionality of the home. A pool deck will change your pool from a place for swimming and sunbathing to a place that is perfect for entertaining.

Types of Pool Decks

The pool deck is the area around the pool, depending on if your pool is below or above the ground. Regardless of which type of pool you have, you can easily install a pool deck to match the pool and enhance the beauty of your home.

If you have an above-the-ground pool, you can choose to install a matching pool deck with vinyl deck railing. This type of pool deck is usually made of redwood, pressure treated wood, cedar and various other types of wood. This wood is treated with compounds to help prevent rotting and termites. You have your choice of enclosing your entire deck or making a partial deck. Always check with your local officials on building permit laws in your area before you begin your construction.

If you have an in-ground pool deck, you have a few more choices available in the line of pool decks. You can use wood for your decking as well as stones, tiles or concrete all around the deck flooring. With the varieties of stones or tiles, you can choose from many textures and finishes. Make sure the wood in maintained regularly to keep it from rotting.

Traditional pool decks are made with concrete blocks. Although these are strong and durable, they require a lot of digging to get the concrete footings properly installed, unlike floating concrete blocks, which are kept on the ground. Many homeowners are choosing to make a combination pool deck with a raised deck by their above ground pool and a lower attached deck flooring with stones or tiles and attached vinyl deck railing. - 1432

Learning About Deck Railing Styles

By Adam Peters

This article is about installing your deck and deck railing styles of your choice. It gives directions on the process.

Installing Deck Railing Easily

Installing your deck may sound like a complicated affair, but it's easier than you think with easy to follow directions. Sometimes, the most difficult parts of making a deck are choosing from the different deck railing styles available today. If you're not the DIY type of person or don't have the correct tools and equipment, you may want to hire a deck contractor or get help from a friend experienced in installing a deck. However, with good directions, installing a deck is not that complicated.

Installing Deck Railings

Deck railings serve two purposes: to provide safety for your family and friends and to bring beauty to your deck and home. They are the most visible part of your deck so you want them to be attractive. They also need to meet the requirements set by the law involving the distance (maximum 4 inches) as well as height requirements (between 36 and 42 inches). When installing your deck railings, you'll find many different styles and designs available. If you have the correct tools and skills, you can have your deck railing installed in a couple of days.

Baluster Spacing and Installation

When installing your balusters, it's important that you space them evenly on your deck. Assuming the distance between two posts is 60 inches, your baluster width is 2" and the required spacing between the two balusters is 4", you add 4" to the 2" to get a total of 6". Divide 60" by 6" and you get 10. This is the total number of balusters that you'll need for your deck railing. To figure out the exact spacing, multiply 10 (number of balusters needed) by the width of each baluster (10X2=20). Subtract this figure from the distance between posts (60-20=40). Divide this number by the number of spacing plus one (10+1=11 then 40/11=3.64 inches). It's actually easier than it seems, especially if you have basic math skills and a tape measure.

Working with Railing Posts

Installing the rail posts includes measuring the distance required for the posts and cutting them with a circular saw or table saw the required length, making sure to cut a 45-degree bevel on the outside bottom of the post. Be sure the post is flush against the joist and drill two holes through the post and the joist then secure them together with a 5-inch long carriage bolt. The balusters need to be cut from 2X2 stock. Clamp together 6 pieces and cut them all at the same time. Install the top and bottom rails 2" thick and 4 inches wide spaced the correct distance apart. Measure both rails for fixing the balusters. Nail them in place, making sure the nails are not too big so they don't splinter the wood. Stand back and admire your work.

DIY Solar Power, Power To The People! Build Your Own Solar Panels

By Matthew S. Leverton

Now that the economy is shaky to say the least, and energy prizes are more unpredictable than ever, wouldn't it be great if you had some way to drastically reduce your electricity bill?

Of course there are several methods you could apply to to achieve that goal, but I think the easiest and most beneficial is DIY solar power. The sun doesn't cost you a cent, and it can even help you to save lots of cash!

The applications that solar power can be used for are literally countless. One of the biggest benefits of solar power, apart from being cheap and efficient, is the diversity of it. I will give some examples of where you could apply DIY Solar Power and therefore be less dependent on fossil fuels:

- Hot water / warming system for the floor of your home.

- Washing cars or motorcycles (This normally uses loads of energy).

- Warm water and lighting for inexpensive luxury in your cabin, cottage or second home.

- It's possible to apply passive solar air heating, a big saver as well.

- Home lighting, landscape lighting, path lighting, garden lighting.

- Complete (or partial) electric for your home.

- Need hot water for your Company Activities? Water heating for industrial and/or commercial purposes.

- Domestic hot water heating.

- Pool heating (indoor/outdoor).

- Lighting your parking lot or your private street.

- Power for the construction site (tools, computers, communications equipment).

- Spa/hot tub heating.

- Use a portable solar power device to charge your portable electronics.

- Campsite shower water heating.

- Powering your security system and/or the lighting for your motion sensor equipment.

So clearly there is an abundance of potential usage of solar power systems. But how would you get your hands on one?

One way to approach this, is to buy a solar power system retail, or second hand. The problem is that they are quite expensive, the cheapest ones being around $3000. If you can't (or don't want to) spend that amount you could look into building building a solar power system yourself!

If you choose to build your own system, then you will need a proper manual that explains every step you have to take in detail. I personally prefer the one at DIYSolarPower.Net because of the level of detail they go into, and because they keep their instructions simple and clear so they can also be applied by beginners.

Apart from that, the course covers many topics on DIY home energy solutions and green electricity issues. For instance you will also learn how to build a wind power generator, and how to make batteries that you can use to store your electricity in. - 1432

Benefits of Planting of Larger Trees

By Kent Higgins

When you are choosing a tree for your garden, you should be mindful of the height and spread of the tree once it has finished growing. If you make the wrong decision, your tree may well become crowded and in most suburban gardens the appearance will be ruined. This is especially so with specimen trees, so resist the temptation to purchase that lovely looking tree from the catalog until you are certain of its suitability for your garden.

The most inexpensive way is to plant trees whilst they are still young. A more mature tree is much more expensive and can be extremely difficult to position, often requiring professional help. If you do really need a big tree immediately as in the case of hiding an eyesore or for privacy from prying neighbors, then it may be worth the expense. You should understand that what you are purchasing when you choose a mature tree is the time it has taken to grow.

There are products that will allow you to transplant a large tree whilst it is fully leaved. They seal the leaves to prevent moisture loss and reduce transplant shock, allowing the roots to develop a purchase in the soil. It is expensive, though and the tree can still suffer. It is better to plant a tree in early spring or winter whilst it is still dormant. A tree over 6 feet will benefit from having its rootball wrapped in sackcloth or placed in a large container before it is put into its new position.

Correct soil preparation is essential for the health of the tree. The soil must be fertile and a hole dug at least 2 feet in depth and 1 foot wider in diameter than the root spread. Any compacted soil at the bottom of the hole should be broken up with a fork and mixed with soil conditioning matter such as loam, peat or leaf mold.

Do not place manure or other fertilizer into the hole as it will burn the roots. Instead, it should be spread over the top of the hole once the tree is in position, to allow the nutrients to leech into the soil. Make sure that the hole is free from building detritus or clay and if necessary, "import" good quality garden soil to replace it. This is important, because once the tree is in position, you will not be able to treat the soil under the root system.

If the tree you are planting is a seedling that is not containered or wrapped in cloth, it is advisable to use a procedure known as "heeling in" to keep it whilst it is dormant. This means that you simply place the dormant plant on its side in an unused part of the garden, covering the roots with soil. Be sure that when the time comes to plant the seedling on, you give the roots a thorough "mud bath", to prevent any air from damaging the root system.

Settle any loose soil at the base of the hole by "flooding " it and allow the water to drain. Place the tree in the hole and backfill around it with soil. Once the plant it in position and the hole is filled to its required depth, "flood" the area with water again as this will assist in removing any air pockets. Ensure that the roots are spread evenly around the diameter of the hole before this. Firming down the soil is important, but don't overcompact it as this will prevent water from reaching the root system.

Many nurseries grow specimen trees in heavy loam that has been wrapped in a type of sack known as burlap. This is called "balled-and-burlapped". Such a specimen needs to be planted at a slightly lower level than in the sacking. Soil preparation is as before with the hole dug approximately twice the size of the root ball. The tree should be planted as soon as it is partly unwrapped. If the soil in the hole is dry, thoroughly soak it and allow it to drain away before the tree is planted. It is not necessary to remove the burlap completely as it will eventually rot away, although approximately 3-4 inches should be cut and pulled away from the top.

In plant care it is advisable to cut back some of the growth from the tree when it has been planted. Usually, this is about one-third of the growth.Dracaena trees, for instance, require some form of supporting structure to prevent wind damage, but this should not be so tight as to cause damage to the limbs.

Cultivating the soil around the trunk during the first year should be done regularly, taking care to remove any weeds and cover the bare soil around the trunk with mulch and manure, taking care that it does not come into contact with the trunk. The mulch suppresses weeds and in turn helps with moisture retention. - 1432

Valentine Gift Ideas: Know Your Lover's Hobbies

By Dane Masters

With Valentine's Day approaching, it's time to start thinking of some fresh ideas to make your Valentine's day a special one. Now the traditional gifts of chocolates, flowers and jewelry shouldn't be neglected, but if you really want to go all out to please your loved one, there are so many ways to express your love and appreciation. Many of these ideas need not break the bank, while some are admittedly luxurious if you have the means. Here we'll take a look at some imaginative Valentine gift ideas to get you started.

You know who you are dating. You know what they like, you know how to find out about their hobbies and passions. Use all this knowledge to your own advantage and use it as a starting point for some Valentine gift ideas.

Valentine gift ideas seem to pop from everywhere during this season. There are so many interests and hobbies that your Valentine must be keen to, so your choice should not be that hard. Your gift may not necessarily be an object, so if you know what kind of activity your loved one likes to be engaged in, then you know what you should do for making Valentine's Day the memorable day you want.

The music lover can be properly wooed with tickets to a special concert, preceded by a romantic candlelit dinner at a fancy restaurant.

If, instead, your Valentine wishes to become a great writer, a lot of gift are available, such as fine journals, fancy pens or books on how to write a book. I told you, you have a lot to choose from.

One new trend in Valentine gift ideas for cooks is the cooking class. These may be as simple as a one day course on bread making, a more elaborate weekend getaway at a bed-and breakfast where you and your true love learn the art of making sauces or a spectacular week long holiday for two in Italy learning the fine art of Italian cooking, complete with local excursions to vintners and cheese makers.

When your Valentine is a great fisherman, a trip to a lake resort will do just fine. Just imagine how excited your lover will look, when you will tell them that you two are going on a fishing trip!

If your lover is passionate with ballroom dancing, then giving them the opportunity t take part in some new lessons will be very much appreciated, as well as a fancy ballroom gown.

Remember why it is so important to make Valentine's Day an occasion to be cherished for years to come. If done right and you hit the right spot into your lover's heart, they will care for you and cherish you, as well!

There is no Valentine's Day without the sweet taste of chocolate and the smell of flowers, but these are great Valentine gift ideas, too! - 1432

Easy Steps to Get Into Gardening

By Dionne Voughar

Do you recall childhood summer days spent running in the yard, with bare feet, feeling the earth in your toes, and the wind in your hair? Why not regain that feeling now that you are grown up? You can get reacquainted with the outdoors if you take the leap and get into gardening.

If you are new to gardening you are better off starting on a small scale. Try a planter bed with 20 or 30 square feet of space; you can grow about 30 plants in that nice, neat space. This size planter area will allow you to explore your green thumb without the danger of feeling overwhelmed by the size of the project. After the first season, you might love it so much you will want to expand for next year.

Choosing the site is your next step. Of course, where you live will ultimately determine where your garden will be. Ideally, your garden plot will be situated in an area that receives at least six hours of daylight. Try to stay away from large trees, as their roots can rob your plants of water and nutrients. It's also a good idea to keep your garden at least three feet from any fences or buildings.

Choose a place that gets shaded from the hot afternoon sun, especially if you live in a hot climactic zone. A good garden will grow with variable light, but you may have to tailor the plants you choose, depending on the light level. Pick a spot with good soil, although keep in mind that you can improve soil later. Don't plant in rocky soil, or a spot with really steep slopes or poor drainage.

Okay, the location is set; now it is time for the fun to start, so let's dig in the dirt! When you really get into gardening, you will realize that it is not a clean hobby, so you will get some dirt under your nails. To begin, remove any grass, weeds, debris, and rocks from your new garden area. Next, use a pitchfork or spade to dig down about a foot deep, and mix minerals or compost in if the soil needs it. If the soil is sandy, add some peat moss, and if it is acidic, add some lime. If you feel it necessary to add fertilizer, use only organic, non-toxic fertilizers.

The beds are ready and it's time to plant your garden. Deciding whether to start from seeds or plants is really a personal choice, although starting with plants can help you to determine the final growing pattern more clearly. Be sure to choose plants with healthy roots and green leaves and stems. Avoid "leggy" plants that have long stalks, or plants with yellowed leaves.

When planting, position smaller plants at the front of the bed, and larger ones behind. The key to a successful beginning in gardening is planting at the right time. Make sure that the risk of frost has passed before planting your tender varieties, although some annuals, like pansies and violas, can safely weather the spring frost. If you are planting seeds, read the package for important information about when and how to plant.

Your plants must receive regular care and attention to help them thrive. Watering is absolutely essential to having healthy plants. If you have a few plants, such as in balcony or patio planters, you can easily accomplish this task by hand watering. However, larger gardens require the use of a garden hose with a sprinkler or nozzle. Don't be skimpy with the water; make sure the roots receive adequate moisture.

Watering is most effective early in the morning when the temperature is still cool. Watering during the hot afternoon sun is a waste of money, as the moisture evaporates before it reaches the root systems. Watering in the late afternoon or evening can cause moisture to stay on your plants all night, creating mildew and disease. Knowing how often to water depends entirely on the types of plants you've chosen. Most require about an inch a week. During hot spells, your plants should be watered three times a week.

Weeds can be controlled naturally by using compost or mulch. A few inches of organic mulch added to the soil will help with moisture retainment, plant fertility, and will keep roots cooler. Here are some things you can use as mulch: leaves, pine needles, manure, grass clippings, and wood chips.

Once you get into gardening, you'll wonder why on earth you haven't done it till now. Aside from the absolute joy you'll feel from harvesting your own delicious vegetables and beautiful flowers, you'll remember just how much you've missed the wind and the earth. You'll feel like a kid again. - 1432

Have a Colorful Landscape Design on Your Garden

By Keith Markensen

The role of color in any landscaping design is a vital one. When color is not used properly, it can destroy the integrity of the design, causing visual confusion and chaos. The correct use of color however can enhance even the simplest designs, resulting in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

Using Color Theory for Effective Landscaping To be able to effectively use color, knowledge of color theory is necessary. Do you know the difference between primary, secondary and tertiary colors? What about neutral colors? Using the following table will help.

Primary Colors include red, yellow and blue. Secondary Colors include green, violets or purples and oranges. Tertiary Colors are blends of the primary and secondary categories. Neutral colors include white, grays and silvers. Note: Black is not a color - it is the absence of color!

Creating Harmony between Colors The harmonious use of color occurs when colors are used properly. In order to achieve this harmony, it is necessary to study color combinations and work out which ones go together well. It is a good idea to match warm colors with other warm colors and cool to cool. Whilst there are cool and warm tones in all colors, it is generally accepted that the "cool" colors are blue, pink, purple and green, whilst the "warm" colors are red, yellow and orange.

Using colors based on your needs Select colors that reflect the purpose of the landscape design, for example, if you are after a relaxation area, greens, violets or pinks are the ideal choice. If you are looking for a vibrant space, choose bright colors such as reds, yellows and oranges. To create diversity and depth, mix neutral colors such as white or gray with primary or secondary colors, whilst tertiary colors are used to link or separate primary and secondary colors. Use a color wheel to help you match colors.

Exterior colors complimenting your interiors Matching the color scheme of your garden to that of the interior of your home allows a transition or flow between the landscape and the building. Colors in the garden that when seen from the inside of the house are complimentary and allow for harmony.

Using Seasonal Colors Choose your very own unique set of landscape plants carefully and you will ensure that there is color in your garden all of the year as well as adding interest for the viewer.

Using warm colors cautiously Unlike some people who are blessed with a brick patio and some large area to landscape, then you should be careful how you use "warm" colors such as red, yellow and orange. Their vibrancy gives the illusion of being closer or bigger. "Cool" colors will soften the effect and give the illusion that the garden is bigger. - 1432

Boost Home Furnace Efficiency And Cut Energy Costs

By Don Marshall

Winter will be here again very soon. Now is the time to start preparing your furnace for winter months. Doing so will greatly boost furnace efficiency and it's longevity. Here are some tips that will help you save money on your home heating bills.

There isn't anything worse than having a cold spell hit and discovering your furnace is either not working or it's working very inefficiently. You can avoid this unpleasant scenario by taking a few precautions before winter hits. Proper preparation will not only keep your furnace running smoothly it will help to save money on your home heating bills.

You can get your heating system ready for the cold by doing the following:

1. Have a technician clean and inspect the furnace

The first step that should be completed is to make sure your furnace is in good working condition. You should hire a good heating technician to inspect and clean the furnace. This is an inexpensive procedure and is well worth the expense. Keep in mind, a furnace that is not working efficiently is going to cost you money in the long run.

Replace the furnace filter

If at all possible, purchase a reusable filter for your furnace. Reusable filters can be cleaned repeatedly and then used again, unlike disposable filters that have to be tossed out. Reusable filters will keep your furnace efficiency high, which will save you money.

This also means you won't have to purchase new filters over and over again. Make sure to replace or thoroughly clean your furnace filter monthly so your furnace is running efficiently and circulating clean air.

Have the furnace ducts cleaned

Mold, mildew and other unhealthy bacteria can accumulate in ductwork over time. Hire a reputable company to clean your heating ducts. This is a great way to boost furnace efficiency and also ensure your furnace system is circulating clean air for you and your family to breathe.

Check your chimney and clean it if necessary

Hire a reputable chimney company to your inspect and clean your chimney system. This precaution will not only increase furnace efficiency, but make certain the chimney can draft properly. A clean, unblocked chimney will let carbon monoxide escape safely out the top.

Those are a few of the basic steps you can take to prepare your furnace for the cold months. Most people don't think about it but the best time to have your furnace checked out is in the spring or early summer before you need it.

Some companies will even offer you a discount for having furnace service done before their busy season. This little trick will save you even more money. By properly preparing your furnace for the cold season, you can be confident you're getting maximum furnace efficiency and saving money on your energy bills too. - 1432

Writing a Great Flower Note Card

By Amy Nutt

You stare at that tiny card and stress over what to write. Should you be witty? Just sign your name? Simply say, "Congrats!" It can be really confusing to know just what to put on a flower note card to be included with the bunch of flowers that you`re giving to someone.

Those flower note cards are small, so you really want to make the most of the space that you have. Here are some tips on doing just that.

Skip the name. Unless your flowers will be delivered to an office or anywhere there are a lot of people and the flowers might be mistaken for someone else, save space and don`t write the recipient`s name. The delivery person will be delivering them straight to the recipient in most cases, so it`s not necessary.

Keep it short. There`s nothing worse than straining to read crunched up writing on the edge of the card because the writer ran out of space! Keep in mind that you don`t have much surface area and keep the note short and sweet.

Make it meaningful. Mention something special. For example, if you are giving roses to someone you visited the rose gardens with, you can include that incident in the note, to remind them of the fun times you had together.

Write neatly. If you aren`t good at writing, print the note, instead. The idea is that the recipient can read it and that`s going to be awfully hard to do if you end up writing illegibly. While you can have someone else write the note, it`s best in your own handwriting, since this makes the whole gift that much more special.

Get inspired. Still not sure what to write? Then turn to some poems for inspiration. There are also some amazing quotes out there that can be easily found online and these work particularly well if you are looking at giving a gift for something that could use words of inspiration, such as a birthday flowers, a promotion or even an anniversary.

Mention the special occasion. If you are giving flowers for a special occasion, you`ll want to mention that. Just a quick note is fine "Congrats on the promotion" works well. Of course, adding more information can make the note card more personal and is a good idea.

Add a touch of you. There`s nothing wrong with the standard flower note card, but if you want it to be extra special, why not add your own touch, a tiny doodle or something that you enjoy. If you usually sign letters "XOXO", then do this on the note card. It will help you be consistent and make the gift that much more personal.

Sign the note. You never know how many bunches of flowers the person will be receiving for this special occasion so be sure to sign your flower note card, or they might not realize who it is from. Unless you wish to remain anonymous, in which case, leave your signature off the card!

What you write on the flower note card will make the flowers mean something. While a bunch of flowers are nice to have, they certainly don`t mean that much unless you know who they came from and why.

Flowers make great gifts, but it`s a good idea to make that note count, too, so be sure you write something special on it! Turn it into something the recipient will want to keep and that will make their heart sing. Following the above tips can help you do just that. - 1432

Garden Plans for a Simple Yet Fab Backyard

By Keith Markensen

Planning your new backyard garden is easy if you follow a few simple steps to ensure success. Often, these steps will give you new ideas to ad interest and unique features to your garden you might not have thought of. Whatever your design hopes and plans, there is a simple process that you can follow to make sure that your new garden goes smoothly and looks great when you're done!

Start by making a list of the elements that already exist in your yard. For instance, you might have a tree or two, landscaping that slopes or has a small hillock on it, etc. If you live in an urban setting, make notes of items that change light gradients and exposures, like nearby tall buildings, trees, and so forth. Drawing a simple map of your yard and including these elements in a simple plot drawing will do the trick.

Now go ahead and make a bullet list of the items you want to include in your garden. These can be plants, flowers, walkways, waterfalls, ponds, sculptures and more. Anything you can think of that you think would fit well and is affordable for you to acquire. If you aren't sure of its cost, write it down anyway and find out prices later. Don't expect to get everything you'd like to have right away, so if it's something you'd like to include in the future, go ahead and list it. It's easier to plan for these things now than it is to try to "work them in" later.

The next step is to walk through your house or building and look at your garden-to-be from the windows and balconies that might face it. Make note of which spots are easily visible from your location, as these will become your garden's "hot spots" later on-the spaces you'll want to make extra-nice and visually geared towards the window that looks out on them.

Now that you have all of these things listed and plotted, start thinking about your budget. How much money can you spend? Often, you will not build your garden all at once. Most people, in fact, build their gardens in stages, starting with design elements and working towards completion. So figure an immediate budget (how much you can spend right now) and then a monthly budget for continual improvements. Once you have a budget, you can begin pricing individual elements of your new garden.

Start the pricing process by finding out how much individual items and pieces will cost. How much to buy a new pond? If you won't be installing it yourself, how much will that cost as well? What about landscaping changes, plant borders, brick bridges etc.? Call a reputable landscape designer or two and get bids on those jobs if you aren't going to do it yourself. If you will be doing much of this yourself, make sure you're physically up for the task and that you have the right tools for the job. Most major garden and landscape tools can be rented, so don't expect to have to buy a $1,500 mixer or former, but do expect to spend some money on basic hand tools like shovels and pickaxes if you haven't already got them.

Once you have priced the elements (both objects and labor) consider which ones you're going to do right now and which ones can wait. Often, landscaping labor is cheaper when done as a whole rather than in pieces, so consider getting all of the major landscaping elements done first. If that is not possible or if you plan to do the landscaping yourself, then focus instead on the "hot spots" we mentioned earlier and see what you can do to make those start looking great now.

Now is also the time to reconsider the elements on your list of things you'd like and decide whether they can wait or be done away with or replaced altogether. Overall, your budget and your time and needs will be what decides your garden's final look. Imagination is very important, and you'll find that while you might not be able to afford to just buy some things you'd like, you may be able to make them or create similar things to replace them.

Above all, make sure you enjoy the experience. Don't make your new garden's creation a chore, but instead make it an experience you'll enjoy and remember happily. A garden is a retreat, a relaxing place to look at or go to and the creation of your new garden should begin this experience. - 1432

Tips For The Perfect Lawn

By Kent Higgins

Taking proper care of a lawn is vital to the success of any landscape design. A beautiful, healthy lawn will always add to the aesthetics of the landscape, whereas a poorly maintained lawn will ruin the effect. Here are a few lawn care tips that will assist you in the maintenance of your lawn.

Choosing the Right Grass for Your Lawn

There are many types of lawn grass and these are used according to the purpose of the lawn and the climate. Consider the following points when deciding which grass you need.

What is going to be the use of the lawn?

Is it to be purely ornamental or is it a play area for the children?

What budget are you able to afford for the lawn?

Do you have the amount of time required to spend on the maintenance of the lawn you choose?

What are you looking for regarding the appearance of the lawn?

How much sun or shade will your lawn have? Is the area wet or dry?

What characteristics does your soil have?

Mowing your lawn

It is important that the lawn is regularly mowed to make sure it looks its best. However, there are some things you should consider before you start mowing. Firstly, you should not cut the lawn too severely as it can cause damage to the grass. It is also the case that a lawn that is cut too low will grow faster and in turn require more watering and therefore further maintenance. Follow these tips when mowing your lawn:

* Don't cut the grass too short. Not only does it damage the grass, it will also allow weed growth.

* The different types of grass require different cut heights, so make sure that you check this with the landscaping company. As a rule of thumb, the best height is 3-4 inches.

* It is not a good idea to remove more that a third of the leaf in one cut.

* Ensure that the mower blades are sharp before each mowing. Having a spare set of blades will help you.

* Maintain your mower, including changing the oil once or twice in the mowing season.

Watering your Lawn

As with most living things, grass is able to adapt to varying conditions. "Stressing" the grass a little, by not watering too much, is a good idea as it promotes deeper and stronger root growth. This stronger root growth will in turn ensure healthier grass growth. Consider the following points:

* Early morning is the ideal time to water your lawn as it will reach the roots before the heat of the day causes it to evaporate. Mid afternoon is not so good as the water will evaporate and if you water at night you increase the chance of diseases developing.

* Water evenly, avoiding "pooling" in areas or missing others.

* For lawns on sloping ground, take care that the water does not simply run off or it may wash down all lawn fertilizer that you might have added. You may need to water this area in shorter, more frequent bursts to be sure that the lawn has enough liquid supply.

* During hotter times in summer or in periods of drought you may have to make a decision between more regular watering or allowing the lawn to become dormant. Repeatedly allowing the grass to become dormant is not a good idea as it creates too much stress on the plant.

* A newly planted lawn will require more frequent waterings to ensure that it "beds" down well and that the roots are well established. - 1432

The Perfect Method To Select a Shed Plan

By Ryan Henderson

A shed is a smaller storage cabin that is broadly speaking made in the garden for stashing away shovels, lawnmowers and other horticulture tools. This cabin can be made very captivating and organised so that it feels like a part of the house that you are staying in. Moreover the shed should be created in such a way so as to serve the role well. There are some standard components that are to be kept in mind before purchasing the shed plan.

First and foremost, the thing that is to be given importance is the flooring. The measure of the floor gives an thought about how long or large the shed shall be. It frequently happens that while working the shed people plan to have a larger shed on paper but when it comes to reality, they soon start chocking up things in the shed. So it is essential that before making the shed plan one should bring out all the things that they expect to store, to get an idea of how much place they might fill.

The next part is to project how the shed might look. There are some communities that observe strict rules involving the look of a shed. They emphasize on the size of the shed compared to the size of your family, the way that the doors should face, etc. It is required to visit the local government offices to get an idea of the rules to be followed and then plan the shed accordingly.

Then the next thing that is to be taken into considerateness is getting the right material to create the shed. Wood is the most preferable amongst the materials that is used to make a shed. A wooden shed does not demand any intricate tools to be made. The flooring can also be made of wood like treated lumber ply wood. Since wood easily gets affected by water, there should be at least six inches of space between the wood and the soil. The wood should be treated not to rot. I would also advise you to retain about 16 inches over hangs from the roof and proper gutters and spouts

Next noteworthy thing is the door of the shed. It is better not to make a swinging door for the shed. This is very awkward and very problematic for windy days. It is better to buy a six foot overhanging door. These types of doors are cost-efficient and functional.

The size of the shed should not be such that it takes up all the space of your garden. So it is important that the size of the garden to be kept in mind before purchasing the shed plan. The sizings usually depend on the variety of goods that are to be stacked away in that shed.

The price is also a very important factor to be taken into consideration. If it is for long term benefits and the varieties of the home and garden, then paying more for a better quality shed is okay. Otherwise it is best to make something that will serve the function for the time and get it modified later.

Last but not the least; if you are a bit enthusiastic, you can make an outdoor shed on your own instead of expending lot of money for hiring individuals to make it for you. Some primary skills are to be followed while building the shed. Some good materials and tools and a detailed planning are all the things that are required to make the shed. There are numerous kits that are obtainable on-line and also the step by step guide on how to make a shed. One such site for shed plans and blueprints is MyShedPlans. These are of effective help if you love constructing a shed yourself - 1432

Using the Ficus Tree For Bonsai

By Thomas Fryd

For Bonsai enthusiasts, the ficus tree is the tree of choice. It is easy to grow, cultivate, and shape compared to most exotic species and does well when "miniaturized." Most students are introduced to the art of Bonsai through the ficus tree.

Of course, the ficus is not the only tree used when making miniature Bonsai, but it is the favored one. They just have distinct advantages over other types of tree. They are generally more resilient than other species, they take to "miniaturization" well, and they are fairly easy to trim and manipulate during the art of Bonsai.

Choosing a good ficus to start with is important, whether you're a master or a beginner. Getting a good tree from the nursery will start your Bonsai experience right. A strong, healthy tree is paramount to success and the people at a reputable nursery can help you. Their job is knowing plants, so if you need a good one, they can point it out. When you've got the right ficus tree to being with, you can then start the Bonsai process.

Your first order of business once you have a new ficus tree is to re-pot it. Transferring it to its new, permanent home is where the Bonsai art begins. Find a pot that is the right size for your intended use of the tree (very small for table top use, larger for corner or shelf display). The size of the final container will decide the size of the tree, with a smaller container restricting the ficus tree's growth to the size you wish it to be. The pot will also need to match the dcor of the room it will be in as well as facilitate proper watering and fertilization of the ficus.

Once the pot has been chosen, allow your plant to "dry" for a couple of days. By not watering for a day or two, the soil will dry out and the tree itself will begin to strengthen its roots for deeper growth. Transferring to another pot is much easier when the soil is dry and the roots are stronger. Prepare the new pot before the transfer, putting the base soil and rocks in and having the potting mix and other items ready. After transferring the ficus tree, gently pack in the new soil around it, but don't use too much. The amount of soil you use will determine how large the tree will grow.

The art of Bonsai is a learned skill and the master understands the symmetry between pot size, soil composition and depth, tree care, and the elements that make for a well-designed Bonsai masterpiece. Don't expect your first Ficus benjamina tree to be perfect, but do expect to learn a lot in the process of doing it. Soon you'll be able to choose the right ficus tree for your expectations in designing your next Bonsai creation. - 1432

Requirements for a Health New Plant

By Thomas Fryd

Growing Up Strong - Replanting 'Baby' Plants

If you're planning to grow a new plant from a cutting or a graft, you will likely need to replant your infant and give it more room to grow. Replanting should take place when the roots of the baby plant have reached the side of its small container. If you don't replant quickly enough, your baby plant may become 'pot bound'. The most viable pot choice is usually 5 inches to allow maximum root space.

Remember to be very careful not to agitate the soil that has collected around the roots of your baby plant. You can use a pointy stick for leverage when removing the baby plant from its crock. Once you've successfully freed your little plant, you should immediately place it into the larger crock and continue the replant process.

Greenhouse on the Go

Not everyone has the luxury of owning a greenhouse or garden shed. For those of us who don't, the portable planting tray is a dream come true. The planting tray is constructed of 6-inch boards, is around two feet by 15 inches at the base. The sides and the back are approximately 9 inches tall while the front is 4 inches tall.

From Seed to Super

There are a variety of house plants that are typically raised from seeds easily; the succulent plants known as Aloe and Rochea, many varieties of cacti and Fuchsia, Eucalyptus, the Phoenix palm, Saintpaulia hybrids, Begonia (semper-florensundB. rex, species of Asparagus, Clivia, Primula malacoides, P. obconica, Solatium, Cyclamen, Opuntia, Solatium capsicastrum, Grevillea robusta, and Passijiora.

Gain Compost-ure

If you're planning to grow any of the above seeds, you'll need a high-quality, robust potting soil.

If you plan to use compost, you should consider compost sterilization. You compost must be heated to 180 degrees Fahrenheit in a in a purifying device for ten minutes. Once the heating process is complete, spread the compost on a work surface to cool.

Another method of sterilization is to utilize Chestnut Compound sterilizer. You can purchase this product from most gardening retailer. Chestnut Compound is a chemical in powder form that, when mixed with water and sprinkled over the compost, will act as a sterilizer. You can use this product before or after you've planted your seeds and it's perfectly safe. Even your tiniest seedlings will emerge unscathed. This product can also be used to sterilize seed boxes, pots, and crocks to rid them of any undesired pests. Adequate compost for seeds may also be obtained by sterilizing only the loam prior to adding the sand, fertilizer, and peat.

Compost Prep-work

The components of the soil should be sifted through a strainer with 1-inch mesh and then they are thoroughly mixed. The jars or seed containers should be provided lots of drainage and covered with coarse siftings from the compost mix. The vessels should then be packed with compost (use your fingers to press the compost into place until it is moderately firm), and moistened using a technique wherein the vessels are held in place in a bucket of water.

Make sure the bucket is not overfull of water; the purpose of this technique is to allow the water to rise up through the compost. For bamboo plant seeds, the water used is usually hotter than the usual. When the surface of the soil grows damp, set the pot aside and allow to drain for several hours before you resume planting your seeds. Plant the seeds very shallowly and then cover them with sifted compost. The size of the seeds will determine how deep they are to be planted. Tiny seeds like Begonia, only need a dusting of hoary sand, but larger seeds should be planted to the depth of their largest dimensions.

Once you have planted all your seeds, utmost care for the seeds is needed to preserve the good condition of the seeds. Cover the containers with glass and paper for shade.

Use a label to elevate one side of the glass to allow air to your seeds.

You should turn your glass every day to prevent the condensation from falling back onto the soil and causing decay. When the seedlings become visible, remove the paper and begin ventilating the containers. The glass should remain elevated on one side. Most people use a plant label to prop the glass. Increase the angle of the glass to allow more air gradually until it can be removed completely. - 1432

Indoor Fruit Trees: Try The Calamondin Orange

By Jim Hofman

Are you looking for a good citrus tree to grow indoors? If so, you have several choices. While many container gardeners are familiar with the Meyer and Ponderosa lemon varieties, another option to consider is the calamondin orange tree. The calamondin is quite easy to care for and offers ample crops of fruit.

Calamondin oranges are very well known in southeast Asia, where they thrive as ornamental varieties. Asian cultures have long regarded the calamondin as a useful and versatile fruit and rely on it for many health issues. Malaysian and Phillipine cultures routinely use calamondin juice as a hair conditioner and as a cough rememdy. Its juice is also commonly used to eliminate the itching and swelling of insect bites.

If you've never seen a calmondin orange, you might mistake it for a lemon. About the size of a lemon or lime and roughly similar in shape, a calamondin is yellow-orange in color and is usually over ripened by the time it turns completely orange. However, once you taste the fruit you'll know it's an orange. The juice is sweeter than most oranges and can be used as a beverage, marinade, or in recipes.

One of the best attributes of our calamondin plant is its fresh citrusy fragrance. With nominal care, the tree blooms often, more frequently than most indoor fruit trees. Our calamondin typically produces fruit in the winter and spring months in ample quantity.

One important tip with a calamondin involves how to pick the fruit. It's best to use clippers to remove fruit from the tree rather than hand picking. Using clippers or scissors will prevent damage to the stem side of the fruit, thereby eliminating premature deterioration.

Caring for your calamondin tree is quite easy. Give it plenty of sunlight, don't over water, and fertilize once every 4-6 weeks. Typically, your tree will require water once every 10 days, or slightly more frequently in dry environments.

For best results and to ensure a thriving tree, place your calamondin outdoors in warmer months. Here in the midwest, our tree spends mid April through mid October on our patio. This really helps the tree flourish, as butterflies and bees find the fragrance hard to resist.

Calamondin trees will make a wonderful addition to any living space and are readily available from online sources specializing in container fruit trees. Their cost is nominal and you'll enjoy many years of sweet delicious fruit! - 1432

Wedding Anniversary Present

By Dane Masters

I look at my rambling old home, our two wonderful children, and realize that March will signify our twelfth marriage anniversary! When we were just betrothed, we were rather young and foolish. Today, we are all grown up and mature. Not even knowing looking into the future or knowing what it would bring for us, we had come this far successfully! And we have no idea about how time went by so fast!

Our family has always been big on celebrating wedding anniversaries. As children, we would get so excited about our parents anniversary. We would spend weeks working on the perfect card, buying ingredients and baking a wondrous cake, and gathering up our coins and pennies to buy the most fantastic wedding anniversary present ever!

I remember one year, during a time period when our mother was in love with everything wicker and rattan, we found what we considered to be the best gift ever! In a little, whimsical gift shop in town, in the very front window sat a little wicker basket. Inside the basket were five coaster, each with an intricate wicker frame. The centre of each coaster had an asian-inspired water color painting, protected behind glass. My sisters and I were in love! This would indeed be our very best wedding anniversary present we had ever found for our parents! We entered the store, wide-eyed and shyly went to the customer service desk to ask about the price. We found out that the coaster set was only $7.50! That left us with just over $3.00 after tax - plenty to pay for gift wrapping and maybe even a bow!

Years later when things weren't so happy in our family, I remember a huge argument between our parents. I'm still sad to remember seeing my mother clear one of the coffee table with a swipe of her arm. That was the coffee table that had been home to our little coaster set, that my sisters and I had bought with such love and esteem for our parents marriage.

In the end, our parents stuck together. There were more storms and arguments along the way, but almost every year we managed to pull together some sort of celebration in honor of their years together. Sometimes it would just be a card with best wishes; other years we'd go all out and spring for an anniversary gift. These later gifts cost much more money than the wedding anniversary presents we would select as children, however, the coaster set of many years ago, is still remembered fondly for the love and care behind the gift and the thought that went into it. And when we do visit our parents home, up on a shelf, away from any angry outbursts, sits that little coaster set. It maybe a little bit dusty, and there are a few scratches and broken bits. But, it still holds testament to our parents marriage and the years they've spent together.

Both our children have picked up our love for celebrating wedding anniversaries! Just like us, they prepare special cards for us and bake a special cake on that day. Then of course, there are the gifts chosen with such care and love! - 1432

Down Memory Lane With St. Valentine's Day!

By Dane Masters

People wait for Valentine's Day, celebrated on the 14th of February the world over! This is the day to express feelings of friendship and love, and it is done through flowers, candy and cards. The receiver of the gifts understands how high in esteem he/she is! It is not only adults that participate, even schoolchildren and teenagers take this day seriously! Of course, the cards that they exchange are more romantic in nature--decorated with hearts and cupid symbols! It would be nice to know how all this started, for it has obviously been named after a person, St. Valentine. In the modern world, it is connected with "romance".

Rome was ruled over by Emperor Claudius II during the third century. There was a Catholic priest in his empire named Valentine. The trouble began when the Emperor found that no one wanted to join his army. The men did not like the idea of being away from home for long stretches of time. And this inevitably was the case since Claudius II always sent his army to distant places after recruitment.

Frustrated and angry, the Emperor Claudius concluded that unmarried men would have nothing to lose and therefore be more willing recruits. His solution to the problem was to decree that marriage for young men be outlawed. This did not sit well with the young men, and those in love found the humble priest Valentine more than willing to perform the marriage sacraments for the ardent lovers in secret. Unfortunately, Valentine was found out and arrested by Claudius. He was thrown into prison and sentenced to death.

A sympathetic prison guard allowed his young daughter to visit the unfortunate Valentine, and it's said they became fast friends. Just before his death sentence was carried out, legend holds that Valentine presented her with a letter, signed "from your Valentine". That simple greeting was the forerunner of today's Valentines Day.

After his death, Valentine was pronounced a Saint by the Vatican. And to honor his name, Pope Gelasius (as far back as 496 A.D.) declared that the day that Valentine died (February 14th, 270 A.D.) be named as St. Valentine's Day. This day was to be special as it allowed individuals to express their sentiments of romance and love to one another. Thus, the spiritual world dominated the material world.

Europe took to this day with great enthusiasm. When St. Valentine's Day became very popular by the Middle Ages, it was Europe that had major celebrations! Even Charles, the Duke of Orleans, posted a card to his wife on Valentine's Day. He was not able to hand it over personally as he was in prison (The Tower of London). And to this day, February 14th is the day that maximum number of cards are exchanged.

Some men offered clothing to the women of their choice. If the women accepted these gifts, there would be many couples engaged to be married! Names of girls would be kept in bowls and lots drawn. The names would be pinned on the sleeves of the boys. In this way, they publicly declared their love! It was like wearing one's heart on one's sleeves! Others thought of different gifts and practices by which they could impress their loved ones. In Wales, hearts and keys were carved on spoons. The keys gave a message to the recipient that this particular heart could be unlocked.

Whatever it may be, St. Valentine's Day is here to stay. And St. Valentine has been responsible for creating the most "loved" unofficial holiday in the world! The customs of yesteryears do not survive today; they have been replaced by candy, cards and flowers. Some enjoy candlelight dinners. Whatever, love has survived the stresses of time! - 1432

Benefits of Beautiful Hedges in Your Garden

By Keith Markensen

A well maintained, healthy and aesthetically pleasing hedge can improve the appearance and functionality of your property. A hedge at the front and side boundaries of a property can be utilized as a buffer against traffic, general neighborhood noises and unattractive things. A well positioned hedge can also accentuate the layout of your garden and focus attention on the house and its surroundings. Those hedges placed strategically within the property boundaries have the ability to highlight pathways and divide specific areas within the garden and are extremely useful as a blind against necessary but unattractive elements of the garden such as tool sheds.

Plants that are commonly chosen for use in hedging vary in style, size and leaf structure. Taller hedges require plantings of species such as holly, thorn bushes or even wattle. Roses, camellias and barberry bushes are ideal for less formal, unstructured hedges. Shorter, lower growing plants that make great hedges include the varieties of box or smaller pine specimens, whilst a variety of fruiting trees such as apple, cherry, plum and quince can also serve as an effective and productive hedge, particularly when used around a vegetable garden. Nut trees are also popular for this use. Formal "clipped" and squared off hedges are almost always comprised of varieties of privett, which are relatively easy to train into the desired formal structure. For a more "original" look, other species of shrubbing plants, when positioned close together, can make successful hedges.

When you are planting out a hedge, the same amount of care and attention is required as for all other plants. Correct preparation of the soil is vital to optimize the health of the plants. A hedge with gaps or unhealthy straggly plants is an eyesore. Garden plants, for instance, should be of the same size when they are planted out to ensure equal growth. Correct spacing of the plants to achieve the close hedge has to be planned, as does the actual layout and structure of the hedge you wish to achieve.

If you are after a straight hedge, it is advisable to excavate a trench to the required size of the hedge. Ensure that one side is straight and set the plants so that they are aligned against this straight edge. The depth of the trench is dependent upon the requirements of the plant. Some plants will need to be planted more deeply than others. The size of the plant is also a determining factor in this.

Generally, bougainvillea plants used for hedging should be planted closer together than if they were to be used as a specimen plant. Those that spread outwards like bougainvillea shrub will be planted further apart than those whose growth is more upright. You should seek the advice of a gardening expert to ensure that your hedge is planted appropriate to the different species. - 1432

Winter Care For Your Indoor Fruit Tree

While indoor fruit trees grow more slowly in the winter than the summer, there are still some important care tips to help your tree thrive in colder months. In some ways, you'll need to watch your tree just a bit closer in winter. For the most part, these care tips are preparatory and quite simple, but there are things to be aware of to ensure the continued health of your tree.

Pests - The Enemies of Your Indoor Fruit Tree

The old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is especially appropriate for indoor fruit trees. Two common pests for these trees are vinegar flies and spider mites. While spider mites are the more destructive of the two, it's best to keep both away from your tree.

One of the worst things about both spider mites and vinegar flies is that they are so small, they're hard to see. Spider mites in particular are so small that you'll often notice the damage they cause before you ever see a mite. If you start to see any damage on your fruit tree, place a sheet of white paper underneath a few leaves, and tap down on the tops of those leaves. If you see what looks like ground pepper that actually starts walking, you've unfortunately got spider mites. The best way to rid yourself of these pests is a horticultural oil or citrus based oil product. Simply spray on the leaves, and that should resolve the problem.

You've probably seen vinegar flies before, and most likely called them fruit flies. Vinegar flies thrive on anything that's decaying or fermenting, particularly fruit or over moist soil. To prevent vinegar flies, be sure to eliminate any dead fallen leaves, split fruit, or dead wood. Another key factor to preventing vinegar flies is to not over water your tree, as this causes a conducive environment for breeding vinegar flies.

Watering During Winter

While you'll need to water your indoor fruit tree somewhat less frequently during winter months, watering is still a necessity. The best time to water is when the soil is almost completely dry. Due to lack of humidity, it's best to keep a closer eye on the soil during winter. The tree itself may require less water due to a slower winter growth cycle and less evaporation. Typically you'll need to water your tree weekly. If the soil is still moist after 10 days, you'll want to check for drainage problems. Remember, lack of drainage is probably the #1 reason should your tree have problems or fail to produce fruit.

Other Important Tips

Here's a few more common sense tips to help your indoor fruit tree stay healthy. First, remove any blooms that are wilting or brown, along with dead branches or stems. The other important aspect of caring for your tree in winter is keeping the soil relatively warm, at least 65 degrees. Soil in containers is usually 10 degrees cooler than air temperature, so keep an eye on this. You may find you'll need to use slightly warm water when watering your tree to gently raise soil temperature.

Indoor fruit trees are very easy care, and just a few common sense precautions will ensure your tree is healthy and yields a productive fruit crop. It's as simple as monitoring the tree and treating any problems that may arise. Keeping an eye on your tree during winter months will pay off as your tree becomes lush and productive during the warm summer months. - 1432

Top Six Greenhouse Gardening Tips

By Gary Pearson

Greenhouse gardening is similar to yet unlike gardening in the open. While the same basic gardening skills are required, greenhouse gardening also gives you complete control and responsibility for the environment of your plants. This adds duties to your normal gardening routine, and can be more time consuming than regular gardening. Here are the top six greenhouse gardening tips for the amateur greenhouse gardener.

1. You have to plan the greenhouse garden is the same way as an outdoor garden. Light is very essential so choose a place which has good light and the movement there is restricted. Make sure that there is enough light during winter if you want the garden to flourish during winter months.

2. You should make sure that you have enough room to do your greenhouse gardening. Do not fill your greenhouse to the brim with potted plants and seeds. Make sure that you have enough room to move around and work on your greenhouse gardening.

3. One important difference in greenhouse gardening is that you have to supervise and manage the conditions. You will be able to manage better if a thermometer is installed in the center of the greenhouse. You will need to open the place if it gets too hot for the plants so that the plants can grow well in the required temperature.

4. A normal garden as well as the greenhouse garden needs similar type of soil for growing plants. The difference comes in watering as they need much less water due to the temperature inside being monitored. The soil remains moist for a longer time as the air in the greenhouse retains the moisture for long. The plants should be given water only when the soil is dry in your greenhouse garden.

5. Another important aspect of greenhouse gardening is to sanitize your greenhouse at intervals. Moulds have a tendency to grow on the sides of the greenhouse as there is a more humidity and in the greenhouse. It is essential to keep it clean.

6. Use water at room temperature to water the plants when you do greenhouse gardening. Cold water will shock the greenhouse as they grow in a controlled temperature. Keep the water in the bucket for a day for the chlorine to evaporate before you water the greenhouse plant. - 1432

Soup, A Year Round Family Favorite

By Jana Banks

There's a lot to love about soups. The tastes, the textures, the endless varieties, and let's not forget the comfort food factor. While soups are often thought of as a wintertime food, there's no reason they can't be a year-round favorite. Many of the heartier soups can be a complete meal. And for the hottest days, you can always switch to chilled soup if you prefer. Below are some of are some of the basics about the types of soups you can make.

To start, let's separate the soups into a few categories, beginning with those that require a stock base and those that don't. Then there are also the fruit soups. Some examples of soups requiring stock include your broths, bouillon, and consomm. Soups without stock would be bisque, chowders, creams, and purees.

You can make soup stock from every kind of meat including beef, turkey, lamb, chicken, veal, fish, etc. Using dark-colored meats will produce brown stock while white soup stock is made from light-colored meats. Vegetables commonly added to soup stock include onion, celery, and carrots. Soups in this category include beef vegetable, chicken soups, tomato soups, cabbage soups, and broth's.

Purees and cream soups often make a great main course for lunch or for a lighter dinner since they're quite thick and rich. Varieties can include split pea, creamy corn or tomato, clam chowder, potato and bean purees bisques like lobster or oyster, and vegetable cream soups such as cream of broccoli or mushroom.

Fruit soups are a wonderful chilled alternative enjoyed year-round, but especially in the heat of summer. Varieties include strawberry, peach, melon, cantaloupe, and cherry. You'll find certain cold soup recipes use vegetable based stock and others list fruit juice in the ingredients instead. Either makes a wonderful vegetarian dish.

Nothing really compares to a delicious, well-made soup. Be sure to put the right finishing touch on your creamy soups with a simple garnish and serve it the appropriate dish, such as a nice covered soup dish for your bean or onion soup, or a nice flat round bowl for your cream soup. And be prepared for requests for seconds. - 1432

The Bauty of Growing Perennial

By Kent Higgins

Biennials are usually very stunning plants with a good number of attractive flowers. They are somewhat troublesome for the gardener, since they do not bloom until their second year. Their great advantage is that their seeding stage produces new plants, which will bloom again two years later, making it unnecessary to plant additional seeds.

Most people are unaware that biennials are called biennials because of the fact that they form new plants every two years. Some gardeners are shocked when the witness the new growth because they were unaware that this phenomenon would take place. What a pleasant surprise for the novice gardener!

The biennials are usually planted in early summer and transplanted to high-quality soil when they are big enough to handle. It is a good thought to pot them at this time, particularly in logistical areas where plants can't be left outdoors in winter. In some cases, they can be transplanted to a cold frame, and then placed in the flowerbed the following spring.

Careful soil preparation is essential to biennials as well as annuals. After planting, if you want an uninterrupted growth of new plants, it is best not to weed and cultivate too persistently. If a really persnickety biennial patch is planted, it will be essential to swap the plants with new ones each year.

Perennials are the fundamental flowers in most any garden. Each year they die and renew themselves for the next growing season. They are long-lived and last for many seasons. Most novice gardeners, or gardeners who don't harbor a passion for continuously working with their plants, have a great affection for perennials because of their long-lasting properties.

Perennials are also among our oldest plants. They have been refined for centuries and often, as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, bear no semblance to their wild ancestors. In some perennials, the blossoms have become so specialized through centuries of cultivation that they no longer produce seeds.

Amateur botanists and gardeners are continually developing other perennials. As an effect of this cultivation and in breeding, perennials are not as resilient as other varieties. Another drawback is the inclination of certain perennials to die down after flowering, thereby leaving gaps in the garden.

Whether you are an avid gardener and love spending time working with your outdoor plants, or you're a weekend warrior who does the bare minimum to get the look you desire, you will likely have an appreciation for flowers. Just like a wireless rock speaker, they add a beautiful touch of color to every garden. The big decision is the type of flowering plant to choose.

No matter which plant type you prefer, there are advantages as well as drawbacks. But, because flowers add such a pleasant esthetic to your garden, you will likely spend more time focused on the advantages. - 1432

Create A Pleasant Dining Experience With Table Centerpieces!

By Dane Masters

They are so easily available and so affordable! Even with their simplicity, they can enhance the visual appeal of a meal setting! Yet, few people pay attention to table centerpieces! They forget that these are but decorations, and can give every meal (even everyday ordinary meals) that special touch by making the dining table look special! So if you are a novice in this area, take a look at the tips on table centerpieces presented below.

When you think of centerpieces for the table, you may think of a large vase with freshly-cut flowers. With the price of flowers, unless you've got your own cutting garden, this just isn't practical. Don't let that deter you. Table centerpieces are meant to serve as a unifying focal point for the entire table setting, and need not be limited to a single vase.

Tiny vases, decorative tins or boxes, baskets, candlesticks, luminaria, and votive candles are other items that can be used as table centerpieces. Each one can also be used with a large vase to make up a certain theme for the meal.

Another point to be kept in mind is, "how many people are going to be at the table"? If it is only two individuals, a single tall vase filled with roses should do. Just keep it at one end. This creates a very romantic atmosphere!

If you've got a large gathering, you won't want a tall vase of flowers, beautiful as it may be, to interfere with your guests' conversation. It can be awkward to crane your neck around that vase to speak with someone across the table.

When there are many people at the table, the table could be decorated with small votive candles or luminaria that are spaced out at regular intervals. Along with them, keep small glasses or vases filled with small and dried flowers that are tied with colored ribbon bows. To complete this attractive theme is a table runner that runs underneath the entire length.

Another way of ensuring that decorations do not come in the way of conversations, especially during formal occasions, is to use ornate candlesticks as table centerpieces. The selected candlesticks should be large and have thin profiles. Keep one at each end. The space in between is to be filled with shallow baskets that have silk flowers in them.

Want the table to look more glamorous? Go in for garlands, icicles and strings of beads! These are decorations used on Christmas trees. If they are interwoven amongst the candles and flowers, they give a very glitzy look to the table! If you do not want such decorations, use small figurines instead. But what has to be kept in mind is that the table is not overcrowded with decorations--just a few of each should do. The idea is to provide visual appeal, not clutter the table with as many items as you can find!

A long, shallow basket filled with brightly colored fall gourds and "Indian" corn makes a simple yet beautiful table centerpiece. Fresh fruit in a couple of baskets and within reach of all your guests is both attractive and edible.

So you can see there's a world of ideas for table centerpieces. Some people set aside space in a cupboard or sewing room to store all their "props" to choose on a moment's notice, ready to put some pizazz on your table. - 1432

The Right Way To Grow Vegetables

By Greg F Williams

Weeds are the central drain on your gardens resources, such as, nutrients, sunlight and revenue for farmers. So the earlier you annihilate them, the better it will be for your garden and crop growing. This may take up a significant amount of your time in assorted seasons, but if you keep on top of your weeds, then it will for sure be worth the time and you effort.

Weeds are ordinarily much worse to get rid of when they have grown. So it might require you need a keen observing eye to really check out and scrutinize your garden for the earliest appearances of these culprits. Cultivating your soil on a regular basis in your garden will help do away with the newer weeds. Once you let those young weeds take hold and get firmly established in your garden, it will become a more serious undertaking to try to take out them from your garden.

The various times of year will also affect the appearing of weeds in your garden. Warm-season and cool-season weeds grow at different times of the year and if you learn to distinguish which weeds are in season, then you can gear up for there coming with your anti weed armoury and deal with the far more efficaciously. Weed seeds also lie in your garden, so it is advised for you to work your soil frequently and the right way

You should make certain your garden is well established and if you do leave an area unplanted, cover it with a good organic mulch. This will stop any weeds from taking hold in your unsown area and then from infesting your plant territory. Also a good mulch gives an aesthetic feel to your garden.

In the instance where weeds have already grown when you discovered them, hacking them off from the ground is the most effective way to remove them. Some weeds may cease once removed, but others will not stop even when you cut them down. But persistent hacking down of those weeds will help get rid of them for good after some time.

You can use herbicides and pesticides, but it should be noted that this is not always required, particularly if you work your soil on a regular basis. Pesticides and herbicides, especially the commercial ones that are available to you, may prove to do more harm than good to your garden. They often kill of useful essential organisms that live in your garden. But if you have a huge weed problem, you can use herbicides and pesticides but only use them sparingly.

Mulching and composting are also good ways to help maintain the soil and ward off the weeds. Ultimately, you will not have to encounter huge problems in weed management if from the start, you are able to keep them from growing in your garden in the first place.

If you are really consistent in digging up your space, you will have made the most out of your vegetable garden and have practiced true growth control against weeds that can steal, kill and ruin your organic garden. - 1432

Why You Should Buy Earth4Energy

By Adrian Fletcher

The pertinent fact is that using grid electricity and other forms of traditional energy sources are getting expensive. And this trend will not change in the near future or every again if alternatives are not found. People are waking up to this fact as they read the bottom line on the monthly utility bill. It's hurting and they are looking for a change. With this in mind and an increasing awareness of individual responsibilities towards the environment, people are ready to take positive action.

A good way to take action is to use renewable energy systems for your home's power needs. Renewable energy has a couple of advantages. It does less damage to the environment than burning fossil fuels. And given that it is plentiful and sustainable, it's price is unlikely to inflate in the future (in fact, as technology improves to harness renewable energy, it's costs can only get cheaper).

This is where the Earth4Energy manual comes in. It shows you how to create two renewable energy systems that you can plug into your home power supply, thus saving money on utility bills. It details exactly how to build these systems, including finding the parts free or cheaply. It uses diagrams and photographs to simplify the instructions. It lists some of the criteria that make the systems viable.

However, this is not the reason why this manual is a timely and useful guide in the current climate. It is useful right now becuase people are looking at renewable energy systems but are put off by the cost. Earth4Energy shows you how to install two systems at a fraction of the commercial options.

Many people are interested in having a renewable energy system in the home but the cost has stopped them in their tracks. Such a system that was professionally designed and installed could range from $5000 to $20000 depending on the amount of energy needed. This makes getting into renewable energy a big financial decision that many people can't justify when more pressing needs come first.

And an expensive system will also take many years of energy saving bills to pay back the initial outlay to install the system.

In the case of the systems you will be creating based on the Earth4Energy manual, the cost is small enough that you will have made the initial investment back within a couple of months (6 months maximum). After that, all the energy you create will supplement your energy needs and help to reduce your energy bills.

So there is little to no financial risk of creating an Earth4Energy system even if they may not be as efficient as the more expensive options that are available.

So the value of the guide lies in the fact that it makes renewable energy systems a realistic and practical alternative for most homeowners, even if their finances are tight. This can not only help the individual that has chosen to buy the guide but can also reduce green house emissions if many people act on the guides advice. - 1432

You Can Grow These Fruits Indoors

By Jim Hofman

Most experienced gardeners are aware of certain trees that have been designed to grow successfully indoors. In particular, indoor fruit trees have gained in popularity and prominence. These dwarf citrus varieties are appealing to any level of gardener and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment when the tree produces a bountiful crop of fruit.

If you know about or perhaps own an indoor fruit tree, you're very likely aware of the Meyer lemon tree. This prolific dwarf citrus is a favorite of indoor gardeners for its hearty nature and sweet, delicious fruit. And yet, the Meyer lemon is far from the only fruit tree you can grow indoors. There are literally dozens of varieties. Let's take a closer look at five types generally available via online sources.

Key Lime Tree - Key limes are the most popular lime trees in the United States, and can be quite successfully grown in containers. The limes are somewhat smaller than you'll typically see in a grocery store, but sweeter.

Ponderosa Lemon - Maybe they called this variety the Ponderosa because everything is big on a ponderosa. And that's the case with these lemons. They're positively huge, weighing in at as much as two pounds each. Let them grow and ripen on the tree and don't be tempted to pick them too soon. Don't worry, the branches will hold the fruit!

Washington Navel Orange - If you didn't think oranges could be grown indoors, guess again. This unique dwarf citrus produces fruit in the winter. The fruit itself is extremely enjoyable ... seedless and sweet!

Calamondin Tree - What's a calamondin? Calamondins, native to southeast Asia, have been deemed part of both the lime and orange family. These trees are fragrant and produce fruit year around. And yes, they actually taste like a cross between a lime and orange. Delicious!

Fingered Citron - Probably the most unique variety of indoor fruit tree we've seen, the fingered citron produces pods of fruit that look like a person's hand. We were struck by the delightful fragrance of this tree, and also by its prolific nature. The citron is similar to lemon, but just a bit milder.

These are just a few types of indoor citrus trees that are available for container growing. Consider these trees for the beginning gardener, as they are quite easy care and their production of fruit instills gardening confidence and pride! Indoor citrus trees are generally shipped all year around, to even the coldest climates. - 1432

Indoor Lemon Trees - A Fragrant Addition To Your Home

By Jim Hofman

If you enjoy cooking with lemons and also like to garden, consider an indoor lemon tree. Indoor lemon trees are a good looking and fragrant addition to your home and typically produce several pounds of fresh fruit per year.

Indoor lemon trees are available in several varieties. One of the hardiest is the Meyer lemon tree, which in and of itself is also available in several varieties. The dwarf Meyer lemon tree is one of our favorites, in part because of its bountiful yield of fruit.

Container fruit trees like indoor lemon trees are shipped in small containers, some as small as one gallon containers. One example is the dwarf Meyer lemon tree. The dwarf Meyer lemon tree is unique because it produces lemons that are more shaped like oranges, with a juice that's sweeter than any other lemon you've likely tasted.

The dwarf Ponderosa lemon tree is another favorite. The most interesting aspect of this indoor lemon tree is the size of its fruit - usually 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. Another benefit of the dwarf Ponderosa lemon tree is the fragrance of its blooms. They almost serve as an air freshener, with a very fresh and pleasing aroma.

Whatever type of indoor lemon tree or container fruit tree you consider, chances are good it will be shipped close to fruiting age. With proper care of your indoor lemon tree, you should expect several pounds of fruit per year, practically eliminating the need to buy lemons at the grocery. Indoor lemon trees are very affordable, ranging from $30 to $50, and are shipped directly from southern state growers.

If someone in your family is just getting started in gardening, an indoor lemon tree is a perfect choice. They'll be encouraged to enjoye the gardening hobby more and more after experiencing success growing fruit indoors. Best of all, indoor lemon trees and other container fruit trees can be grown just about anywhere.

If you're at all concerned you won't be able to successfully grow an indoor lemon tree, don't be. Care of an indoor lemon tree is quite simple, and detailed instructions are almost always supplied by the grower. You can even move your indoor lemon tree outdoors during the warmer months (they love it!) onto your balcony or patio.

Usually, hours of sunlight and moderate water are all you'll need to do. On occasion, you'll need to prune the tree, which is a very easy process. Doing so will result in productive yields of fruit every year, and a healthy, vibrant indoor lemon tree that is a proud addition to your home. - 1432

What to Do and Not Do With Poisonous Plants

By Keith Markensen

The natural benefits of plants in an office or home are many. They provide a great decorative touch to those lonely stretches of unpopulated floor, table or desk space, they improve the air quality of the room, and have a naturally uplifting presence that calms and soothes those who look upon them.

These are but a few of the reasons why every home and office space should be outfitted with any number of plants. Yet before you go turning your home into a leafy, jungle paradise that oozes atmosphere you should observe the following pointers and tips on some of the plant varieties you may feel inclined to add to your abode.

Firstly, as beautiful and innocent as most plants appear, many have an unknown danger lurking in the tips of its leafy tendrils that can potentially be very dangerous or even deadly to both animals and children. Some plants when consumed or even touched can cause severe illness. One of most popular poisonous plants is ivy, with philodendron another popular choice that is potentially harmful.

Any household that includes children and/or pets either living there or visiting even infrequently needs to have its plant life chosen with care. Researching beforehand the potential dangers a plant may hold, the symptoms they are likely to cause upon consumption, and the quickest and most effective remedy should that occur are all vital. Maintaining constant supervision over children and pets in areas where these plants exist is important, though ensuring they're out of reach is even more so.

Kids are ingenious though, and if that pretty plant catches their eye, you can be sure they'll devise a clever way to reach it and take a closer look, so don't let your guard down even when you feel a plant is out of their reach.

Aside from the potential dangers of plants, when choosing any plant for your home it's important to identify which area of the house that plant will reside, and the amount of sunlight it is likely to receive there. Hiding a plant that requires plenty of sunlight in a dark corner will ensure it does develop well, though you can remedy this by moving it into a sunny spot for at least a few hours each day. Putting your indoor plants outdoors for a few hours on nice days is a great way for them to get sunlight and air.

Another factor that can influence plant growth is the temperature of the room or area it's located in. Some plants thrive in warmer climates, while others may require cooler temperatures. Most need a nice moderate environment though, so if you stick it in a cool basement, or a stifling room in the summer, they may not grow as desired.

As a general rule of caring for house plants - flowering plants will require more sunlight to feed their growth than other types of plants. Tropical plants will do better in an environment with moist air, while cacti will thrive in the areas with dry air, those resilient plants should be able to survive even in conditions not ideally suited to them. - 1432

New Christian Store Kentucky Backwoods Crosses

By zach johnson

We sell many types of handmade rustic wall crosses and table crosses. We also have a hemp cross available. All of my crosses are made from red cedar wood from the backwoods of western Kentucky.

The special thing about my online christian store (http://www.kybackwoodscrosses.com) is that all of my crucifixes and crosses are all original and have a unique design.

Without spending a dime, free hangers are included. They would look great hanging indoors or outdoors. My Crosses will bring the desirable rustic look to your home or cabin.

I really want to spread this christian symbol across the nation, and what better way to do it than to have these crosses in many of your homes.

These crosses were made using a very exhausting process:

First, we go out into the woods and search for cedar trees. Once we find quite a bit of trees that have the right diameter, we saw them down, cut them into planks of the desired size, and then plane them to have a very smooth finish. Afterwards, they are dialed, a design is applied to them, and then the crosses are finally stained with multiple coats of polyeurothane. Then I install hangers on the crosses.

We have many designs, for our wooden crosses so search through our full inventory at http://www.kybackwoodscrosses.com . My online store is new so check it out to be our first customers. - 1432

How To Order Unique Sympathy Flowers

Just as the changing of the seasons, there are many types of tragic events that all families hope will never come to pass; however, they still do and bring tearful results to both individuals and families. One example of this type of event would be the sudden, unexpected passing of a loved one; this event often brings sadness, confusion, and lack of peace to those associated with the person. There is nothing more permanent than death, and it can be a very difficult situation for loved ones to accept when the person is no longer there to talk with.

It is difficult to imagine, unless you have been through it, the pain and agony of the family of a deceased individual at their funeral. There are few words that can describe the feeling one has when watching a dear friend or relative being laid to rest, or when watching a mourning family say goodbye to their loved one.

During this period of grief your sincere sympathy and affection can help the family members in their time of grief. They are full of sorrow and sadness when having to deal with their loved ones being gone forever. You can express your sympathy to the family members of the deceased in many ways.

One great way of showing sympathy for them is to give a sympathy gift of funeral flowers. Flowers are a long-standing symbol of both happiness and sorrow. They have a unique way of expressing these emotions without the use of words. Flowers are often able to express emotions more fully than words. It can often be quite difficult to express sympathy to a grieving loved one through words, but flowers make it simpler.

In a serious situation like this, one can provide much-needed moral and emotional support to the bereaved family by giving them, for example, a bouquet of white lilies, roses, or other beautiful floral arrangements. A wide variety of other funeral flowers can be found at your FTD florist online. Flower arrangements can help to alleviate in some small way the pain of the departed person's families.

Consider sympathy gifts as an alternative to flowers. There are other ways to express sympathy other than funeral flowers. There are many florists that you can find online, such as FTD Florists, who offer a variety of gifts for sympathy or funeral flowers. You may wish to send a gift basket of snacks or candies as a way to express your condolences to the relatives.

The sudden death of a loved one, for instance, is one such situation that stresses the happiness and mental peace of all those relatives of that person. Presenting them with sympathy flowers for instance, is one such way of expressing your feelings of sympathy. You can choose a funeral wreath or one of the many other alternatives that fall under the heading of sympathy gifts. There are a wide variety of funeral flowers to choose from at a respected florist online. - 1432

Composting Tips - How Does A Composting Pile Work?

By Lee Dobbins

Composting Pile? Is that the big smelly heap you might see at the bottom of a farmers garden? Or shoved into the corner of the local environmentalists, rotting away? Yes, it is. But composting piles are not just for farmers or environmentalists. They are great resources for the planet, and for yourselves, helping to sustain and maintain the environment around us for future generations. They are easy to implement in your own garden, and need not to be simply a stinking pile of waist.

Usually, a compost pile will have been created using a large box, container, or barrel. This will be designed specifically for your waste products which come from food, that do not need to be thrown out into the regular garbage, and which will degrade over time to become a processed form of dark soil which can be used within your garden and for other various things.

But how do composting piles work.

Lets start with what goes into your compost pile. It is not a place for you to throw ALL of your waste away. Meat products could not go into this for example, but there is a lot of waste that can. This is anything from garden of field waste, like falling leaves, to household food waste such as fruit peels and rotting fruit - like an apple core.

These are things like grass clippings from mowing your lawn, saw dust and wood chips, and also manure from cows, horses, and many other animals that you may have. If you do not have animals, you can buy a bag of manure specifically to put into your composting pile with the rest of your waste.

Within the pile there will be micro organisms which work to disintegrate the items which have been thrown into the pile. These micro organisms are important to making composting piles, without them we would not have any. Putting you compositing pile into a shed is a great way to keep them alive as it means they will always be in a high suitable temperature and away from the threat of a frost which can kill them.

The micro organisms in your compositing pile will also require water. Check that it is always moist, and if it is not, then you should water your pile yourself as you may not be getting enough rain water. Your compositing pile will also require air to decompose. Make sure there are air holes within your container so that the micro organisms can continue their work.

Another great way to help them out is buy cutting up your waste food before hand. Cut the rotten apple or banana in half means that they will be eaten a lot easier by the micro organisms and so the speed with which your composting pile is created can pick up incredibly.

Composting piles take anywhere from two weeks to two years to actually produce something that we are able to use upon our gardens. The only way to ensure that this is going to be a fast rather than drawn out process is to make sure that all the things above are in your compositing pile, and the conditions are suitable.

Cedar Fence MA - How To Choice The Ideal Fence

By Alan Bates

You see a lot of different types of wood fence in the Boston area. Plain old cedar privacy fence is seen a lot in the suburbs; however, as you get into the city itself, you start to come across smaller yards and more distinct architecture ? so that a smorgasbord of different fence designs becomes the rule, nit the exception. In Boston proper you don't see quite as many fences as in some other cities; Boston is the third smallest major city in the U.S.in terms of square miles, but the fifth highest in population density. However, the classic, timeless look which only wood fence can give is ideal for a city with so much history that it practically comes out of the faucets!

If you're looking to put up wood fence on your property, the first thing to do is to decide on a fence design which suits your property and of course, your home. While in the suburbs there are few limits to the type of wood fence you choose ? from 6' cedar privacy fencing or the more popular stockade picket fence, almost anything goes! Newer homes usually will be accompanied by modern style privacy fences, but stockade fencing is more appropriate for the colonial homes which may be centuries old, as well as the newer homes which adopt this look.

In the city proper, the homeowner can decide what works best for the particular features of their home. Brownstones which are common in many neighborhoods often have low picket fencing out front which delineates property lines without hampering the sense of close-knit community which is famously a part of Boston neighborhoods. Backyard Boston wood fencing may feature either these same low picket fences or higher basketweave privacy fences which turn a backyard even in the most crowded urban area into your own private oasis.

From the data we've gathered from homeowners who've located Boston wood fence builders to take care of their fencing needs, we can tell you about how much you can expect it to cost to have a wood fence built on your property. The cost for most of the wood fence installations done in the Boston area by contractors we work with is between $1,000 and $4,000 ? the average is about $2,500, including labor and materials. The time the job took averaged a pretty quick two weeks. The longest was four weeks and the quickest an astonishing eight days! Of course, the longer a job took, the more expensive it tended to be.

So for you as a Greater Boston homeowner, what does all of this mean? For homeowners, it's actually good news. The prices of Boston wood fencing are more or less consistent in the area ? so as long as you find a good contractor to work with, you can be sure of getting your money's worth out of your wood fence. For a Boston wood fence, cedar is what you want. The hot, humid summers and harsh winters; not to mention the Nor'easters and offshore storms seen here call for durable woods. Cedar's natural oils repel moisture, making the best choice for the sometimes harsh weather of New England.

If you want a cedar fence to stay looking its best and protected from weather damage, you should treat it every five to ten years; a small price to pay for a wood fence which looks great and will last. If you don't use cedar, pressure treated lumber is the next best option. Be sure to paint it if you want to keep that fence around for a long time though. Lastly, always do your research into any wood fence contractor you're thinking of using and evaluate their track record. It may take a little of your time, but it's well worth it for a fence which will hold up over the long run.
