Easy Greenhouses

By Tim Bryson

So youre thinking about a greenhouse but you are afraid its just too difficult to grow your own food year round. Well, it may be and again it may not be. There are a lot of things you can do to make it easier including using some automation like solar louver vents. It can be as easy or as hard as you make it.

Having a basic greenhouse can be fun and exciting. It all depends on what you choose to grow, how much time and effort you want to spend on your greenhouse garden and your attitude. Any time you start a project, you need to have a good positive attitude and be ready to put your best effort forward.

You dont necessarily need a big fancy greenhouse to get started. A basic garden greenhouse might be the only thing you need to feed your gardening hobby year round whether you enjoy herbs and vegetables or orchards and other beautiful flowers. Basic doesnt mean small or large as there are many good basic greenhouses made to fit areas of varying sizes.

When considering the size greenhouse you should build or buy make sure you have adequate room in your yard for the size youre thinking about and leave some room for your other garden pursuits in the spring and summer. Do not build or buy anything until you are completely satisfied with the area you have chosen. This will save you time and money in the long run.

Supposedly, The Roman Emperor Caesar wanted cucumbers year round and someone discovered they could do it covering a wooden frame with glass and keeping warm rocks heated during the winter and greenhouses were born. Its still that way today, gall or plastic wrapped on a frame, walls and roof, that let light in and keep everything else out; just a very basic greenhouse.

Having a heater will help you be successful in the colder months and is well worth the effort and the cost. You should leave room for this expense if you are in colder climates. You might also think about rods for your hanging plants and wire racks for storage space and to have a place to set potted plants. This also will help you keep things tidy, which makes it easier for you to get around in the greenhouse. - 1432

Choosing A Beautiful Cactus For Your Garden

By Thomas Fryd

Mealybugs and scale insects can be two of the most aggressive bugs to attack cacti and succulents. New seedling plants are also subject to damage, but the main pest of these plants is when they are over watered by their owners. There are many varieties, more than a thousand to choose from, and we are going to list a few of the more popular ones. For many reasons, these types have proven to be great houseplants.

A Christmas Cactus, which also goes by the name zygocactus truncatus, is admired for its mid-winter flowers. It grows in a cluster of leaf-life joints extending from a single base. The flowers run up to 3 inches long, are deep red in color and will bloom from October to January. This particular cactus is aided by being placed outside during the summer months. It should be only be watered sparsely once it is brought back inside. This is only necessary until it shows signs of blooming again, then watering should be increased. It should be planted in loose soil, and it does not need sand, unlike other varieties of cacti. It tends to be droopy and would be best planted in a hanging basket.

The Peanut Cactus is another popular cactus of the succulent family. It is very different from its cousin the Christmas Cactus. It is a lower growing plant it seldom grows over 3 inches tall. It is made up of clusters of joints that are covered by soft white spines. It has large, funnel shaped flowers and it propagated by cutting the joints.

Another variety is the Night-Blooming Cereus, as the name implies, it flowers will only open at night. There are many different varieties of the Night-Blooming Cactus. Some of which can grow to be very high in stature. In the houseplant variety, it can grow to a height of 3 or 4 feet and it blooms large white colored flowers.

The Orchid Cactus, is also in the same family as the Christmas Cactus. But this cactus blooms in the spring and summer, as opposed to the winter time. There are dozens of types of this cactus, all have exquisite blooms and can reach tremendous height and size. Aloes are in the succulent family, they grow heavy lily-shaped leaves that sprout from a single base. They can be either fully green or green with white and silver stripes and spots.

Aloes can often be mistaken for the Agave, the Century Plant. They strongly resemble each other. The Crown-Of-Thorns is known by the botanical name Euphorbia. It can be grown upright or trained to vine, it has a thick stem and succulent spiny leaves. This plant needs more moisture and humidity than many other succulents or the yucca cane. The Jade Plant, or Crassula, is another typical succulent plant, it has flat, round leaves that are bright green or can be variegated in color as well. This plant is easy for a even a novice to grow, and will withstand almost anything except over watering. - 1432

By Gene Young

No question about it, if you ever thought of establishing a shed, you will be surprised by the big number of designs and plans that are obtainable. You may have discovered a few you like but remember its better to find a shed plan no matter which style you prefer. You may not be able to find designs to fit the exact type you saw, but without doubt you will find some very close to it. Also most often you can do some alterations. Even though there are so many contrasting styles they all have elementary similarities .

The very first thing you must ascertain before you even think about buying a pattern is what is it going to be used for. Here are 5 popular shed designs that you may want to look into depending on the aim.

1.Garden Sheds
Likely the most favourite due to the fact that it is something almost every home owner has a need of. Oftentimes garden tools and equipment are stacked away in the garage. This is ok as a temporary fix, but after awhile it can create clutter. Not only that moving the equipment in and out could hurt your vehicle. A superb style for a garden shed is one with a gable roof. This presents you a little bit of supplementary storage space up to. You can customise it by choosing the doors and window you desire and the size of the whole project

2.Storage Sheds
Very alike to a garden shed but a little well insulated. Most likely you will be storing items here that you truly want to shelter from the elements. Maybe you will have items that hold water or liquid that you do not want to spill.. Moreover, for goods such as cloths or books and those types of things that moisture should not enter. Storage sheds are oftentimes established with a salt box style roof. The purpose is to allow more exposure to the sun.

3.Pool Sheds
Now were talking about getting a little fancy. With the proper plans even a novice can make one of these. There is more glass required here in some of them. It may take a little more thinking and care when constructing these elaborate sheds. They can range from being very easy to be used just as a change room along side the pool. There theres other types that can be quite elaborated, almost a small entertainment habitation. Some even have little kitchenettes in them. Again the choice will be yours as to how elaborate you want to be, along with what the budget will take and how much space you have forthcoming

4.Barn Sheds
These are a genuinely different design but is reasonably standard. Your option of this one will depend a lot of the outward interior decoration of your home. Some individuals feel this shed style does not mix in well with ultra modern homes. On the hand they are ideal for the country or antique style household. There are a little bit trickier to establish, but not out of the expertise of the beginner.

5.Combination Shed
One of the refreshing types beginning to come out on the market and its a phenomenal concept. Its particularly useful if you need to hive away firewood. Essentially its a standard garden shed, with a open style leanto attached to it. The materials all match and one part blends in perfectly with the other.

No matter what your demands are or which style you have settled on, be sure to get a good easy to read and follow, set of plans. - 1432

Lets take up few Handyman proposed DIY repairs. How would you install a completely new toilet in your home? Its an easy process to follow. You have just got to follow few simple steps. Stop water flow through the toilet and use a sponge and a bucket to remove additional water left in the tank. Next, use the channel pliers to remove the ballock valve nuts. Use wrench to side the two nuts holding the bowl to the floor flange. Next is the process of setting the new bowl. This can be done through proper waxing, nutting and bolting measures.

Now suppose that you have got to remove wallpaper from a living room. If the wallpaper is new then it would not pose much problem but if it is old then the adhesive might be glued very hard. This means that steamer will have to be used. Such steamer will allow tearing away the wallpaper. At other times, it may be handy using a plastic scraper. Of course, this is when the adhesive or paste is very tightly bound.

Seldom, old wallpaper can pose more problems. During such times, it is advisable to use the elbow grease along with the above mentioned ideas. Now, for the next part; some adhesive may remain there even after the wallpaper is removed. This gives a poor impression of the living room. For this, you should look to use sandpaper. If it fails then a power sander can come in handy. Use it with caution so that you do not damage the wall. Finally, you can look to paint or put wallpaper.

A Blackberry and a Raspberry Walk Into A Bar

By KC Kudra

So, what is it that you get when you cross a blackberry and a raspberry? Stemming from Scotland, we now have the tayberry. This beautiful deep reddish purple colored berry is very large and long in length.

The tayberry was first developed in Invergowrie (right by the Tay River, thus the name) by David Jennings and David Mason, botanists at the Scottish Crops Institute. This raspberry-blackberry cross produces its fruit in July and August; and the berries are wonderful eaten fresh or cooked into a variety of foods.

It both tastes and smells just like a blackberry. Taking a bite into one, you may notice that there is a slight tart flavor to it. There is more then one way that you can enjoy this wonderful meticulously merged fruit.

A tayberry makes a great pie, which is a wonderful change of pace and is welcome at any late summer picnic. You can make tayberries into a deliciously tart-sweet jam, which makes a great sandwich or toast topping.

Try adding tayberries to a bowl of yogurt or ice cream, or incorporate them into fruit salads and smoothies for something a little different. In fact, you can use tayberries anywhere you would ordinarily use blackberries or raspberries. Tayberries are an exciting addition to your morning cereal, baked goods and of course, they are wonderful just eaten as they are - there's no wrong answer to the question of how to enjoy these fruits.

Tayberries also make a delicious dessert wine. With a beautiful red color not unlike that of pinot noir, the wine has a sweet and sour taste which is very appealing and pairs well with meats, especially red meats and game. It also goes well with strong cheeses and is quite reasonable, usually costing about $15 a bottle.

Amongst the wonderful tart flavor that this dual fruit brings, there are also health benefits. It is highly rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Then of course there is fiber and folate. The leaves and the root are known to help prevent diarrhea.

Another home remedy using tayberry leaves (originally raspberry or blackberry leaves, but tayberry works equally well) is to chew the leaves as a cure for bleeding gums. The Scots have been using this home remedy for 2,000 years!

Tayberry can be used for many things from home remedies to food and wine. Definitely a different type of fruit and surely delicious you will be amazed at how many things you can make with it. Although tart in nature, many have used it to make pies, jams, and pudding. Sure there is a lot more that you can find in such an exotic fruit. It is really only limited by your imagination. - 1432

Changes in Popular Garden Features Over Time

By Kent Higgins

Did you know that gardening is one of the oldest hobbies? Plants have, of course, been around since the beginning of mankind. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and gardening has long been a leisure activity for the elite.

In Asia, plants have been used to treat and cure diseases for hundreds of years. Chinese medicine is especially known for its use of herbs and other plants. Not only have plants been cultivate for their medicinal properties, but also for their beauty. Early on, gardeners learned how to cross two varieties of plants to create a new type of plants. Many of these early plants are useful as well as beautiful.

In the Middle Ages, members of royalty grew gardens of flowers, but most people grew plants as food more than for aesthetic reasons. Herbs were very popular for their healing properties. New spices and herbs were introduced to the European world due to travelers who brought them back from faraway lands.

Between the Middle Ages and the Victorian period, gardens became more popular. Many members of the nobility were famous for their extensive gardens, include Marie Antoinette. Exotic plants because very popular. In the Victorian era, gardening reached heights never before seen in England.

English gardens created during the Victorian era were meant to display the wealth of the homeowner, as well as provide a place for entertaining. Roses were a popular addition to Victorian gardens. Greenhouses and conservatories became popular for hobbyist gardeners to try their hand at growing unique plants from far away lands. Gardeners created many new varieties of common and popular plant species, including begonias and daffodils.

Victorian gardeners soon turned their attention to adding architectural elements to their gardens, as structures and rows of hedges became popular. Topiary plants were also a common addition to English gardens, including those shaped like animals.

In contrast, American gardens of the same time period were a bit more restrained. Many of the founding fathers were farmers with practical vegetable gardens and orchards. Even though flowers and greenhouses were popular, many people lived in cities and did not have room for such luxuries.

After the Industrial Revolution, formal lawns with shrubs were replaced by much more elaborate gardens including fountains, large conservatories, and massive plantings. As people began to rely on store-bought medications, plants formerly grown for their medicinal qualities were abandoned in favor of those with more beautiful blooms. Today, the use of herbs is coming back into style, and many modern gardens have a place for herbs and other medicinal plants.

Landscaping plants like the kentia palm plants are becoming more and more popular today as people try to create a retreat in their own backyard. New plant varieties are being developed that are hardier and require less care. As you can see, gardening has long been a popular hobby. If you decide to start a garden, you will be continuing a tradition that is many hundreds of years old. - 1432

Things to be taken into consideration when building a deck

By Adam Peters

This article instructs the reader on the things that have to be taken care of when building a deck for the house. It also gives useful tips on factors like materials and size of the deck that have to be planned thoroughly before starting with the construction of the deck.

Constructing a deck is not impossible for a layman who desires to do so. However, since it involves a lot of skill and technical knowledge it is better not to attempt it and hire a professional deck builder who is more equipped to do the job.

The fact is that a deck is an extremely valuable addition to your house. Having a deck enables you to have wonderful moments with family, pets and friends in the quiet seclusion of your home while experiencing the beautiful outdoors. When building a deck that can be used an a natural extension of the house, you have the option of selecting your favorite spot in the garden that offers a scenic view and gives you a great sense of peace. In addition, such a deck would be the ideal place to host parties and barbecues where guests can have a great time relaxing and unwinding.

There are certain things that you need to keep in mind while starting with the construction of the deck. To begin with, you need to have the necessary permit before you undertake this project. Knowledge of the construction codes and zoning laws would also be very useful before you plan your deck. Again, even though you do have the choice of building the deck yourself to suit your convenience, an expert is more likely to provide satisfactory results.

You need to remember that an elaborate plan of the deck is needed before you embark on the actual construction. This plan should include the measurements, location of the deck, the technical details and other specifications that are important aspects of the deck. If this plan also has a list of the legal formalities that have to be completed, it will help you a lot. Another thing you need to keep in mind is the direction of the sun when building your deck. The size of the deck, the tools and materials needed for construction all have to be gone into thoroughly before you start with the work. When it comes to the size, try and see to it that it complements the size of the house.

As far as the materials are concerned, wood is the basic material that is used even though there is also a great demand for wood composites. It makes sense to opt for high quality wood as your deck will have a great look that will last for many years. Generally, cedar, pressure treated lumber and redwood will give you a fantastic look and feel for the deck.

Decorating Your Home With Plants

By Thomas Fryd

Houseplants provide a great opportunity for interior design possibilities. Living plants will add a special touch to homes that are already well-designed with good furniture, paintings, and tabletop displays. Plants can be a beautiful decorative touch to add to your home. There are nearly endless options available when choosing your plants and their containers. Keep your overall decorating style in mind when you visit the nursery or garden center so that you choose plants and containers that will fit the dcor of your home.

When choosing a pot for your plant, examine all of the different sizes, shapes, colors, and materials. It can be hard to imaging the possibilities when you select a plant in a black plastic nursery pot. You can repot your new plants into simple clay pots, providing a subtle earth tone and subdued design. To brighten a dark corner in your home, find a bright yellow ceramic pot. Patterned pots in plastic, metal, or wood can fit right in with the dcor of your home.

Consider the plant you've chosen when you purchase a pot for it. If you have a lot of bonsai, for example, continue the Asian theme by selecting red ceramic pots. Vines will look great in simple pots, because the plants themselves are so complex. You can even select humorous pots, like one with crocodile drawings, for unique plants like a Venus Fly Trap.

To add some interest to your container garden, select pots in different shapes and sizes. Round pots are classic, while long rectangular trays can provide unity for a group of plants, and asymmetrically shaped pots add visual interest.

Choose your plants with attention to your overall color scheme. Choose plants with bright yellow or red flowers to add a splash of color to an otherwise restrained room. Or, continue the soft atmosphere by choosing a plant with deep colored foliage. Make sure that the flowers give you the effect you want. Many small blossoms can make a busy and active looking floral display. Large, uniquely-shaped flowers make a bold statement.

When buying plants to decorate your home, you'll need to decide on how many plants you want, and where they will be places. If you use many plants at different heights, you'll add a sense of dimension to the room. Use a single large plant such as a hibiscus tree in a corner to draw the eye across the room. A basket hanging from the ceiling has a different effect from a large tree plant on a pedestal.

By varying color, shape, and placement, you can achieve any affect you want with your houseplants. Combine the decorative elements in your home with living plants for a unique space. You can continue your interior design through your choice of plants and containers. - 1432

Ways To Rid Your Orchids From Insect Infestation

By Keith Markensen

Orchids are exquisite exotic plants that produce breathtaking flowers. Orchids are located in tropical and subtropical locations around the world. There are some exceptions to this scenario however. Most have an aerial root system that are attached to the trunks of trees in their natural environment.

Orchid Pest Threats

There are several types of pests that can kill orchids, some of the most common are aphids, mealy bugs, mites, millipedes, centipedes and snails, among others. The climate and area would depend on which type of pest could invade.

Aphids suck the fluid from the Orchids, the damage comes from this bug actually biting into the plant. The tissue will experience necrosis, grow yellow and rot. Mealybugs are white or pink, they infest the plant and feed off of them. These are some of the more difficult pests and require immediate attention when discovered.

Scale bugs are white and look like they have scales. They are a frequent orchid pest. They feed off the orchid and grow quickly and get larger, harder scales. The males are winged and breed with the females. Mites are another threat, the most typical being the spider mite, that form webs on the plant and you may never even see the spider.

Millipedes and centipedes eat the rots of the plants they infest. They are quite harmful to orchids and centipedes are potentially dangerous because they can sting humans. Slugs and snails are very similar in their destruction of orchids by eating them and they are common orchid pests. Whiteflies rank as one of the three peskiest orchid pests along with aphids and spider mites.

Millipedes and centipedes will actually eat the roots of the orchid and cause rotting. They are very harmful and dangerous to human beings because they sting. Snails and slugs are similar to millipedes, in that they destroy the flower by eating the roots. Whiteflies, however, rank as the top threat to orchids.

Solving Orchid Pest Problems

There are many natural methods which you can employ to control orchid pests. You can get a natural house plant pest enemy of the pest in question and release it on the infected orchid. You do not need to use a pesticide for this reason and in the process you are not harming the environment either. If you have a number of pests infecting your plants however, you may want to consider going the route of pesticides.

You need to make sure you get the pesticide that is more natural and less environmentally harmful. This approach allows you to protect the world for future generations. Netting and protective barriers also work as another natural alternative in preventing orchid pest infestation in your garden. - 1432

How To Doctor Your Plant

By Kent Higgins

You don't have to be an expert or a paid professional to diagnose and remedy plant problems. You don't have to throw away an expensive plant because it seems it will cost more than it's worth to bring it back to health either. All it takes is a little know-how to diagnose and repair what's wrong. It's easy to be an expert plant doctor.

First, when you see a plant that is looking sickly, has poor flowers, ragged leaves, etc. you should look at some simple things to see if that solves the problem. Start with what's most likely and work your way down to what's least likely to be the problem and somewhere in there you'll probably figure out what is wrong.

Make sure the plant is receiving proper care: enough lighting, enough but not too much water, recent transplanting or major moving, etc. How old is the plant and how long has it been in its current location are the first things you'll need to know. Many plants that are bought at the store and brought home will be droppy for a few days. It's a new environment it needs to get used to, so give it a little time before you get too drastic.

Also be sure that the plant doesn't have special needs that aren't being met or that it doesn't "molt" or shed its foliage yearly as part of its routine. It's also important to understand that younger plants and seedlings will often have very different problems and looks than older plants will.

Look at the plant with a magnifying glass and see if you can see any pests, unusual growths, or other things that might not be so obvious to the naked eye. Many parasites and fungal infections are very small and hard to see. You'll often find little colonies of things crawling and growing on your plant that you may never have even knew existed. Some of these might be small spiders, mites, aphids, etc. that need to be dealt with.

Make sure to look under the leaves, as the underside is often where parasites and pupai are located.

Look around the plant at its surrounding soil and mulch and be sure there aren't snails and other night creatures hiding there. These are often culprits when nothing else seems to be a problem. Get rid of the pests and the problem will go away.

Poor plant care is often the reason plants don't seem to be doing well. Perhaps it's a plant that needs a lot of sunlight and is only getting two or three hours a day? Maybe it needs to be rotated to get full sun from one day to the next? Perhaps it's not getting enough or is getting too much water-both are serious issues. Is the soil getting depleted? Maybe it's time for the addition of some nitrogen or other nutrients, according to the plant's needs.

What about the plant and its container? Is the plant too big for the pot it's in? If the plant has outgrown it's pot, a new and larger one will be needed. Often when you pull a plant out of its pot to transplant it, the roots will be heavily balled up, which is a sure sign of constriction. Don't pull them apart, but loosen and break up the soil that surrounds them so they can spread naturally.

Learning to diagnose and solve plant problems is not too difficult and becomes easier with practice. Use common sense and make sure you know the plant you're dealing with. A good book or website reference in taking care of indoor plants will often save the day. - 1432

Secretary's Day

Although a lesser known holiday, secretary's day has been picking up steam. That said, when deciding on flowers, Toronto bosses should keep the picks colorful, diverse and friendly. Added gifts inside the basket should also be small with impersonal items, like mugs or cookie tins inside of them. Accompanying cards should have a fun yet professional tone.

Father's Day

Dads aren't flowers and candy types of guys but by visiting the shop of Canadian florists, Toronto buyers can locate a gift basket tailor made for dear old dad. These baskets can come with or without flowers and will have things in them like expensive fountains pens or a decorative mug. Savvy sons and daughter may even spice up the basket by slipping in a gift card from a favorite hardware store or clothier. Such thoughtfulness will not be lost on the old man, as even he can be sentimental at times.

Just Because

Of course, a gift basket can be purchased for absolutely no reason at all except to let someone know how much you care.

Just remember that the size of the basket and what is included in it will depend on what you are willing to pay and who the gift is for. Bear in mind that while a giant teddy bear with 101 cookies is a nice gesture, the person you love won't care about will most likely be happy about the thought itself.

When it comes to gift baskets that include flowers Toronto consumers need to asses the personality of the recipient to assure they will love the present and the type of flowers chosen.

Through assessment and appropriate selections, a gift basket will bring the joy that you desire to give to the individual who so obviously means the world to you. - 1432

Renovation of the old deck by the simple process of painting

By Adam Peters

This article informs the reader about transforming the look of an old and ugly deck by painting it. It also gives detailed instructions on how to paint the deck.

If you have a deck in your house that has lost all its charm and causes you a twinge of regret every time you look at it, then you should seriously consider renovating it so that it doesn?t create a sense of shame when you socialize or hold parties in your house. For many people, building a new deck is not feasible because of the expense that will be incurred. However, this is no cause for worry as your old and faded deck can attain a brand new look by the simple procedure of painting it.

The only problem with painting is that it is a solution which will work only for a short duration rather than for a significant number of years. The reason is that paint cannot withstand harsh weather conditions and requires a lot of maintenance to retain its beautiful look. Despite this, it can come in very handy if you are looking for a temporary solution for your deck.

Before you commence with the painting of your deck, you need to prepare the surface of your deck thoroughly so that the painting does not go waste. This means that you have to inspect your deck carefully and fix problems like loose and damaged boards, twisted fasteners etc. Using galvanized nails and weatherproof screws for the repair work is recommended for imparting strength to your deck.

After this, you have to focus on cleaning the deck. A deck broom or pressure washer will be very effective here. Similarly, a commercial deck cleaner can also be used for the job. It is very important that the old finish, loose material, dirt etc. are completely eliminated from the deck while cleaning it. Once the deck has been cleaned, care should be taken to make it totally free of moisture.

Priming the wood surface is the next thing that has to be done. A superior quality exterior wood primer should be used for this purpose. If the primer is applied with the help of a brush, it will provide better protection to the wood. Again, two coats of primer are essential for maximum impact when it comes to wood protection.

Once the primer has dried and the deck has been cleaned, it is time to apply the coat of paint. Nowadays, floor and porch enamels with hardeners and extra pigments can be obtained which will not be damaged easily. Apart from this, you should choose oil based enamels that have semi gloss sheen as they are more resistant to water.

You need to realize that for a long life for the deck, maintenance is essential. Try and avoid the use of a garden hose for the deck as it can damage the paint that you have applied on it. The best way to clean the deck is to use a soft broom and a moist cloth that has been soaked in a detergent that is harmless and mild. All of this will keep your deck looking bright and new for a long time.

Relax And Let The Fountain Do The Job

By Thomas Fryd

There are several things you can do to relieve stress during the course of the day. Yoga can be very relaxing, however, this is not always an option for someone trapped behind a desk. However, there are many other options for you to consider when trying to calm down and de-stress from your environment. A simple water fountain can work wonders, remember it is the small things that can work the best. It is not only good practice to learn ways to relax, it is good for your health as well. The benefits to being able to successfully relieve stress are well known in the medical world.

There are several different types and models of indoor water fountains available. You can look around at your local store to find one that appeals to you the most. You can find one in any shape, size or even in different colors. The smaller ones work ideally when your space is limited. While you can purchase a larger, more elaborate one for your home. Someone may even give you a fountain as a gift for your birthday or Christmas.

Most models sit well on a tabletop or desk, they are just as great as the larger ones. All you need to operate one is some water and an electrical outlet. If it spills water though, this means that it is not working properly. Your fountain should be stable and not leak.

It is also important to remember that the proper amount of water is maintained in your fountain, this is essential if your fountain is going to work properly. You need to check the levels frequently if you use your fountain on a regular basis. Even if you only use your fountain occasionally, you still need to make sure the water level is adequate. It is never a good idea to let your fountain run out of water, it may cause your fountain to be damaged.

If it a very hot day, the water even on small backyard and shaded areas may evaporate more quickly than you realize. If you allow it to run dry, it can cause your landscape fountain motor to be damaged or burn up. Fountains are relatively simple to maintain. It is also important to note that your fountain needs to be cleaned occasionally, by adding some vinegar to the water. In much the same way you clean your coffee maker, the vinegar will run through the fountain, clean the parts and then you simply replace it with fresh water. - 1432

How to choose a competent contractor for building your deck

By Adam Peters

This article guides the reader on how to select a reliable contractor for building the deck. It provides useful tips on the things that need to be considered when hiring the right contractor for the job.

When planning to build a deck, most people find it difficult to select a reliable contractor, more so when they have no past experience in this area. To overcome this hurdle, what you can do is to look around at the decks that seem attractive to you and then find out who the contractor of these decks are. In this way, it will be possible to build a list of contractors about whom you can be confident as to their expertise in the deck building arena. Another way to select a good contractor is to apply to your local chamber of commerce for suggestions. Whichever way you obtain a list, make sure to interview the potential candidates personally before you arrive at a decision. During the interview process, give a correct idea to the contractor of all the things you want him to build on the deck so that he can provide you an accurate estimate of the cost that you will incur for constructing your deck.

Hiring an experienced person is always a wise course to pursue. You should look for a minimum of three years? experience in your contractor as this will have provided him all the skills needed to do a satisfactory job with your deck. Apart from this, it is essential that you work with a licensed contractor to avoid legal problems that may occur later. It is also crucial that the firm you hire has a good insurance coverage which can come in very handy in case of accidents caused to the workers during construction or any harm to your property. Taking precautionary measures like checking up with the insurance company after having taken a copy of the insurance policy of the firm will further help you avoid future complications.

Another thing that will help you choose the right contractor is to ask for references and personally ensure that other people who have hired your contractor have a good opinion of him. In this way, you can also verify whether the contractor has a reputation of meeting deadlines and staying within the prescribed budget. When formulating the contract, make sure that the contractor specifies every aspect of the deck like the materials that will be used, how the payment will be made etc.

After having finalized on the correct person for the job, you should arrange a place in your yard for storing the lumber required for the job. You should also see to it that utilitarian aspects of your house like the gas lines, water lines, electrical wiring, drains etc. do not come to any harm when constructing the deck. Obtaining all the necessary permits that are required for the job so that the work can be carried out smoothly without any hindrances is a must. Finally, you should take care to periodically inspect the progress of work so that you end up having the deck that you have always dreamt of.

Planning the construction of your deck

By Adam Peters

This article focuses on the steps that you need to consider before you begin with the building of your deck. It also gives useful tips on how to select the right contractor for your deck.

If the prospect of summer excites you at the thought of having an enjoyable time outside the house along with friends and family, then you should seriously consider building a deck in the backyard or front yard of your house. By doing this, you won't have to bother about insects, wet grass etc. that are an integral feature of the outdoors.

Since the addition of a deck to the house is a major alteration, it is better to invest some thought into it. This means that you should devote ample time to factors like location, material and design for the deck etc. After deciding on the budget for the deck, you have to select a contractor who will help you to get a great looking and strong deck at the least expense possible.

Before you choose a contractor, though, it makes sense to have a lucid idea about the specific materials you want to use in building your deck and the exact layout that you would like for the deck. Along with this, if you are interested in installing attractive features like built-in benches, planters etc. you should inform the contractor so that he can give you a correct estimate of the cost that is likely to be incurred for the deck.

Other things that you need to be sure about are the experience and skills of the contractor in building a deck for you. Requisite knowledge to carry out the desired work is a must. You also need to check on the license of the contractor and find out whether he has built other decks in your area of residence. Asking for references is a good idea to find out the satisfaction levels of other customers with the particular contractor. Apart from this, you also need to ensure that the contractor helps you in all areas of the deck building process. Insurance for the employees and business are essential qualities in any firm that you are thinking of finalizing for the job.

The benefit of building a deck is that you won't need to worry about your house being a complete mess since the entire work is carried outside. However, you do need to keep an eye on the progress of work and be readily available if some problem arises during the building process. At the same time, you should not pressurize the workers and make it difficult for them to work. On the contrary, if you are civil and appreciate their work by offering them an occasional cold drink or snacks, the whole operation will be carried out much more smoothly and you will end up having a beautiful deck.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Home Pest Control Company

By Russ Frank

Some questions concerning an indoor pest control service will be answered when they meet you to provide an estimate. Was their personal appearance and manner professional? Were they on time for the appointment? If not did they call ahead to let you know? Was their vehicle well marked, clean and professional? Were they helpful and informative or did they try high pressure sales tactics?

"How long has your company been in business?" is a good question to ask. The more experience a home pest control service has, the better. "How much training and experience will my technician have?" is another valid question. States typically mandate a certain amount of annual training for all licensed technicians.

"Are you licensed?" is a reasonable question. Check with your state to verify their answer. You should not do business with any home pest control company that is not 100% legal.

An important question to ask is whether the company is insured. Ask for a certificate of insurance. Verify it with the insurance company. Lack of insurance is a serious problem. Do not do business with a service that can't or won't verify their insurance.

"What methods of pest control do you use?" This important question will help you understand how the pest control service will be done. Knowledgeable professionals will explain the importance of removing potential sources of shelter and food from the home. They should also talk about techniques that prevent pests from entering the home.

"What will happen if I get an infestation?" Their first response will be to come in and control the infestation. However, what happens next is even more important? How can they prevent a re-infestation? An appropriate response will include an explanation on how they can break the life cycle of the pest.

The only way to really evaluate customer service is to ask their customers, or your friends and neighbors. Are their pest control methods and techniques effective? How's their customer service? Are they courteous? Are they responsive?

Do they belong to professional associations? Professional pest control associations offer many benefits to their members such as educational opportunities. Be wary of home pest control companies that don't belong to at least one professional association.

How do their prices and services compare with other pest control companies? Asking for bids from several pest control companies allows you to compare prices and services. While price is one factor, professional knowledge and customer service may be even more important. - 1432

An Apartment Garden

By Keith Markensen

You might think that just because you live in an apartment you can't have a garden. Nothing is further from the truth! You can grow fresh vegetables and spices right in your apartment without need of big pieces of land or space. There are many plants that lend themselves well to growing indoors and in pots.

Window boxes, patios, south-facing windows, and similar places are all great places to grow a garden. All you need is some patience, some containers, and some imagination to make it happen. Many plants flourish indoors and you can reap the bounty of the fresh harvest when they've ripened!

If your apartment has a small or medium-sized patio, you're in luck. Of course, if you haven't got a patio, you can still use a big window or grow shade plants that don't need as much exposure to the sun. If your patio doesn't have a lot of space, you can hang plants from a beam, eave, the railing, or choose vines that climb trellises. Hanging baskets are the apartment gardener's best friend and can be used in a variety of situations to grow plants-you just need some imagination.

Flowers are also popular amongst apartment dwellers, especially annuals and others that don't require constant planting and care. These are much lower maintenance than food plants, but don't have the reward of fresh food later. Often, apartment dwellers can plant seeds early in the year, before those who plant outside can, thus harvesting earlier or having blooms faster.

Using the right container for your plant is paramount and will make or break your endeavor. Decide what kinds of plants you wish to grow and then choose containers appropriate to the plant's size and root base. Make sure the plant and its container will fit in your intended growing spot and that you can get all of the plants you want to grow to fit in the area you plan to grow them. Nothing puts a damper on your enthusiasm faster than finding out you've got too little space and too many plants.

Avoid replanting your plants as much as possible, as this trauma slows their growth for a time and can cause late or even no harvest situations. While many vegetable plants will grow well from seeds even when grown on window box, some are better as shoots or beginners-tomatoes are a good example. Some plants will handle replanting well while others might call it quits after the first move. Consult your nursery or gardening specialist to find out which ones can handle it. Again, it's best to avoid this altogether and choose a container big enough for the plant right from the get-go.

Remember: that container might look great now, but if the plant outgrows it or becomes stunted because it doesn't have enough root space, is it worth it? When you choose your plants, make sure the plant matches the sunlight, area, and will do well indoors or partially outdoors (if on a patio). Most plants will do well if they don't require full and total sunlight all day.

So give it a try and see if you can grow a garden in your apartment this year! You'll find that it's a lot easier and more fun than you'd thought. - 1432

Ways How To Water Your Plant

By Kent Higgins

As has been mentioned before, you will want to select house plants that fit the environment and not the other way around. The temperature range in your home is very important to whether or not your plants will flourish. Plants also need "fresh air", and exposure to gases, smoke and dust can damage your plants. Over time, air pollutants can be very harmful to your plants.

Remember to water all your potted plants from above the pot. The only exception to this concept is an African Violet plant, because exposing the leaves to water can be very damaging. It is hard to give them a proper watering without splashing them.

In other cases, watering from the top is the best way to be successful. Be sure that your potted plant is never filled with dirt higher than an inch from the top of the pot.

The best way to ensure a proper soaking of a plant, is to fill it to the brim and to allow the water to soak down to the roots until the extra water flows out of the drain holes at the bottom of the pot.

For plants that prefer being watered from the bottom, the process is just the reverse. You pour the water into the drainage pan at the bottom of the pot. You allow it to soak up through the dirt and then the soil on top will be damp to the touch. Once this is accomplished, you can rest assured your plant is properly wet.

Never allow water to stand in the drainage dish, this will cause the cause damage to the roots. Be especially careful to avoid this with any plants housed in a jardiniere. After a period of an hour, lift the pot from the drainage dish and check to make sure there is no extra water left over.

There is another method you can use when watering, it is called wick watering. This is a relatively newer system that uses a thick braided wick, to provide even watering all the way to the roots. You can even buy pots for plants that are designed strictly for this purpose at your local gardening store. The pot is on a covered saucer, on which the pots is placed, and then filled with water. The wick extends from the saucer through to the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot. As soil gets drier, water is gradually absorbed through the wick and distributed through the soil

Proper temperature is also very important, you want to keep your plants exposed to room temperatures or slight warmer. Do not water plants with cold water, because this can cause them to blight. If your tap water is "hard", it is a good idea to install a water softener to rectify the situation. - 1432

Finding the Right Outdoor Structure for Your Yard

By David Creasy

Everyone loves garden structures and what they bring to the yards and gardens they're in. However, when it's you and you're trying to decide which one to choose it can be overwhelming. A good rule of thumb is to look at your family's activities and create a space that will work best around that activity whether that be gardening or swimming pool parties.

One of the easiest to define is the trellis. Trellises are traditionally used in flower beds and gardens. You will also find them outside up against walls or the sides of a home or out building directing the growth of vines. Seldom seen is the trellis that stands alone in the middle of a yard but that's not to say that it isn't done. They are versatile and come in many different shapes and sizes including small ones for potted plants.

If you're looking to get more bang for your buck, try an arbor. They're very popular in gardens and can be used to create stand alone focal points in your yard. Using arbors with trellised sides can be a wonderful way of utilizing the climbing vines that will fill in the sides and top thus creating an elegant canopy throughout the arch that is just lovely.

This next structure has an almost meditative feel that cannot be explained. It's been said that since it lets in nature and the suns rays, the pergola allows you to commune with nature while you are eating or just having fun with family and friends. Of course, sitting in silence and just enjoying your life is another way to experience nature under a pergola. It will provide you with partial shade and, if you choose, can be filled with climbing vines and plants that will fill the slats with a canopy of sorts to create even more shade.

If you are a family that parties, a gazebo may just be the right outdoor structure for you. It can be used all by itself out in your yard or to support other activities such as a backyard swimming pool. Having a gazebo for dinner parties or for that midnight dance with that special someone are all great reasons to choose this particular structure for your yard.

You won't hear much about raised beds and bridges because, even though you will see both all the time, they blend in with the landscape more than stick out as an overpowering structure. Raised beds are great to place in your yard and allow you to create a flowerbed without digging up anything, anywhere. For areas that have low lying spots or water features you would like to enhance, bridges work very well. As stated before, these get lost in the landscape but if you look, you will see them everywhere. - 1432

Growing A Plant From A Shoot

By Kent Higgins

How To Grow Plants From A Shoot

When potted house plants are raised from a seedling, "cutting" or any other method, the require attention to make sure that they grow properly.

To prompt plants to form a basal shoot, the tips of the main shoot are pinched off to keep them from growing up without breaking. This removal of the tip causes a shoot to form on the side of the plant. This information will be valuable when you try to make shoots off of older plants and use them to grow new ones.

This "pinching" of a plant is done just above the fourth or fifth leaf, so that new shoots develop as closely as possible to the base of the plant. Many different species of plants, only one "stopping" in enough, with some plants need to have this done a second time. The second "stopping" is done once a new side shoot has 2 or 3 inches of new growth; the tip of the secondary shoot is pinched just above the fourth or fifth leaf.

Plants that are grown only for ornamental foliage can be pinched at any time of the year. Generally this practice is done in the spring and summer when plants are actively growing. This allows for the maximum growth potential of the newer shoot.

Plants grown for their flowers, should never be stopped when they are two or three months from flowering. This can damage a delicate plant and end up destroying its ability to reproduce or flower.

Fern palms also known as Selaginella, and other plants that form rosettes close to the top of the pots, should be allowed to grow and develop naturally. They require no "stopping" or "pinching" at any time.

Replanting & Top Dressing

How to care for plants that need to be replanted? This should be done during the spring when plants begin new growing. Some plants such as the Spathiphyllum Peace Lily, Clivia, Aspidistra, Ceropegia and Hova can stay in the same pot for a long period of time, even years. Their life can be prolonged by top-dressing with a good quality potting soil annually. Other fast-growing plants such as Fuchsia, Solarium and Pilea must be repotted every year.

For many plants, a mix of 6 parts loam (garden soil with a medium texture), to 2 parts of leaf mould or granulated peat moss, and another quarter part of silver, is a good enough mixture. The prebagged potting soil mixtures are easier for and sufficient, if you do not want to make your own.

How To Repot a Plant

You will turn the plant upside down and tap the bottom rim of the pot on the edge of a table or bench. You will then need to examine the ball of soil If it is packed tightly with roots, then it needs a larger pot. You need a clean pot of a larger size than the one the plant was previously in. This is to ensure that the plant has room for growth and drainage. Pieces of an old, broken flower pot make the perfect medium for drainage. You need one piece, which is slightly bigger than the drain hole and put it in the pot hollow side down, over the hole. Then put three to four pieces smaller than the first piece and spread them out all over. Lastly, put a thin layer of the compost material over the top layer of the broken crock to prevent compost from washing out around the crock.

At the bottom of the root ball, the old crock will be located. Take a stick and remove them, disentangle them from the roots so they are not to tight.

Now you can spread a thin layer of compost over the siftings and take a potting shovel and press it down firmly. Set your plant into the proper position and do not cramp the root ball under the soil, add a bit of compost little by little and make it firm as it is added. Leave a space of around one inch at the top of the root ball for watering purposes.

Unpotted Plants

Unpotted plants are best left alone until the roots have spread around outside the ball of soil It is only then that repotting is necessary. In some instances, the soil has been found to rot or become sour when it works down into the drain cracks. It is best to take the plants and put them into totally fresh compost, and to use the same sized pots. - 1432

How Trees Enrich Your Life

By Keith Markensen

The addition of trees to your landscaping will bring so much life! Trees are essential for shade, cleansing the air, providing wildlife habitat, increase property value and make memories.

If your yard is devoid of trees at this time, then you may want to consider adding some. Research has shown that having trees and landscaping also increase the value of your property. Even if you are not thinking of selling your property, trees can add years of enjoyment. If you have existing trees in your yard, you need to check and make sure they are healthy. If they are old or show signs of deterioration, you may need to plant new trees that can become established once the old ones are removed.

When planting trees it is important to consider the location. Trees can help reduce your electric bill. If you plant a tree on the southwest side of your home, it will cool the house off in the summer, this helps reduce energy costs. Once the leaves begin falling, the winter sun can warm your home on a cold day. Ever green trees can be planted as a breaker, thus further reducing your energy bill.

How new tree help reduce your energy bill

Have you ever thought of ways to reduce greenhouse gases and global warming? You can plant trees to help. One gas that causes the most issues is carbon dioxide. Trees and plants take carbon dioxide out of the air and use it for photosynthesis. The carbon is then stored in the wood and living tree tissues. When leaves fall off the trees and get composted, carbon dioxide is added back to the soil. This improves soil quality for plants and more of the carbon is stored in the organic soil matter. Carbon can be stored in the wood of trees for a long period of time, in the tree trunks or in furniture, or other products made of wood. When you plant new trees, you help to reduce levels of greenhouse gases.

Planting trees also gives food and shelter to a wide variety of animals. You can hang bird feeders in your trees to entice birds to come into your yard. Flowering trees and shrubbery are where birds feel safe, build their nests and find food. Squirrels and other small animals also use trees for nesting purposes and as a food source. When choosing your trees, you may want to consider growing guide or some that will be a good food source for the local animals.

Trees can live for many years and provide enjoyment. Planting a tree and watching it grow will be a living testament to your families memories. You may want to plant a tree to honor a milestone in your families life. Raking leaves seems like a chore as we get older, but jumping and playing in the piles are great fun for children. You can hang a swing in a tree, build a tree house, or just sit under it and relax. - 1432

What are Weeds?

By Dave Truman

We often think of weeds as isolated plants, but an 'underground view' shows that they're more like a tree on its side. The 'branches' are just the weed part that sticks up above ground. The 'trunk' is the web of material that connects them all. Getting one just disconnects that 'branch' from the 'trunk'. But the smaller they are the less time they've had to branch out. Getting one helps prevent their spread.

Weed Control Methods

Keeping weeds down is more than just an aesthetic issue. Weeds consume space, water and soil nutrients needed by growing vegetable plants. They also act as vectors for insects and disease, as well as provide cover for mice and other pests. When they grow out of control, they can even block needed sunlight.

Weed control is an ongoing task, but one that is made easier by employing a battery of methods.

One of those methods begins before the first seed is planted. Proper soil preparation can help reduce the problem before it begins. Churning the soil by a good tilling prevents weeds from getting started and disrupts the growth cycle.

Seeds will remain, but putting down a weed control fabric over the topsoil can help. It blots out needed warmth and light and provides a physical barrier that makes it more difficult for them to rise. Mulches provide a natural cover that will help suppress weeds. Manure, bark chips, sawdust, leaves and other forms can block sunlight.

Laying down a pre-treatment, such as a pre-germinating herbicide can prevent weeds from ever developing that might already have seeds in the ground. Exercise care to get the proper one. You don't want to make the soil inhospitable for your new vegetable seeds and transplants.

Proper seed selection will help, as well. Some fast growing, shading vegetables will block sunlight that weeds need to develop. They're sometimes called 'smother crops'. As they spread out under the soil, they help crowd out the weed roots, thus providing double prevention. Planting them at the correct depth, with the right fertilizer and water, will give them a head start against weeds. Their action can sometimes even help over winter to suppress weed development.

When weeds do get started, it's best to try to remove them mechanically and right away. This could prove more difficult because there is less to grab onto, but the larger they grow, the more their roots spread. When weeds grow big, hoes, weeding forks and other tools can be a big help.

But when all those methods still don't entirely eliminate weeds - as they probably won't - don't be afraid of using a chemical herbicide. Take care to find one that will take out the weed and not your vegetable plant. But once you do, they can be used safely and effectively. Chemistry has developed a great deal in the past fifty years and there are many that are actually less harmful to you and the environment than some natural methods. - 1432

Facts about Victorian railings

By Adam Peters

This article gives information about Victorian railings. It emphasizes on the beauty and dignity that this style of railing can bestow to a deck.

Victorian railings are so called as they symbolize the architecture and style of the Victorian age. During this time, England witnessed the industrial revolution but this age was specifically named after Queen Victoria who reigned in splendor over England from 1837 to 1901. The distinctive feature of this style is a sense of majesty and imposing beauty.

In recent times, Victorian railings have begun to be used as a statement of style. However, what one needs to remember is that during the Victorian era houses were designed in a magnificent and opulent manner. In fact, the houses as well as the designs of the railings, pathways and doors were seen to indicate the social position of the owner. This is especially the reason why Victorian railings have intricate designs and are very high on visual impact. Having such railings on the deck can radically alter the look of the deck. The only requirement for installing these railings, however, is that that the house should also be able to match up to the beauty of the railings and should present a splendid appearance.

If you have decided to opt for Victorian railings on the deck, it is essential that you select the appropriate materials for constructing them. If you live in an area that receives plenty of rainfall or is susceptible to moisture, then wood should not be used as wood decomposes very rapidly in such conditions. In this scenario, iron can be used as it is very sturdy and is blessed with longevity if it is protected with a high quality lacquer finish so that it is not affected by corrosive elements in the atmosphere.

In the absence of such a finish, iron might also be vulnerable to moisture. Apart from this, iron also has the benefit of precision manufacturing whereby complicated and beautiful designs in the Victorian style can be obtained from this material. If you opt for vinyl railings, you do not have to worry about moisture. The problem with vinyl, though, is that it gets damaged in hot weather conditions. However, with modern technology producing vinyl that can withstand hot weather conditions, vinyl can be a good option for Victorian railings.

If your house has been designed in the Victorian style of architecture, then constructing a deck and railings in the same style would present a grand and beautiful appearance. Do make sure to comply with the building codes applicable to your area when installing these railings, so that you are safe from accidents of any nature.

If you have any doubts about Victorian railings as far as materials, designs and installation is concerned then you can rely on the Internet to provide you with all the information that you want. - 1432

Build a beautiful deck with the help of star burst railings

By Adam Peters

This article gives information about the various features of star burst railings. It describes the unique design of these railings and how they impart a stunning and gorgeous look to the deck.

If you are bored by looking at the same pattern of design for your deck, then you can install star burst railings and bring about a whole new look to the deck. With star burst railings, the deck will have a trendy look and to add to this, it also gives you more privacy while having a relaxing time on the deck. These railings are designed by playing with the balusters in such a way that it gives out the appearance of spindles that start as a cluster from the bottom rail and thin out as they reach the rail at the top.

If you use star burst railing designs that are made out of wood as the material for construction, then the whole process becomes relatively simple and the final result is beautiful and elegant. All you need to make sure is that you adhere very strictly to the building code requirements that are relevant to your area. For star burst railings, the specified space between the bottom rail and the deck floor is 4?. Of course, depending on the area the building code requirements may alter to a certain extent, but not radically.

The benefit of the star burst design is that there is no rigidity about using them in isolation. This means that they can be used very effectively by combining them with various other railing designs. This is one reason why star burst railings are so much in vogue today. In fact, when star burst railings are used as the definitive feature in combination designs, it appears very classy and trendy. In other words, by incorporating this railing into your overall deck design, your deck will have a very modern look that will give you a lot of joy and pride. If you are skeptical about the number of star burst patterns that you should include in your deck design, a good idea would be to look at the size of the deck and then arrive at a rational decision so that the ultimate result looks apt and definitely not overdone.

The materials that are normally used for constructing star burst railings are wrought iron and wood. Aluminum which has wonderful qualities like light weight and durability and is relatively easy to maintain is also a good alternative for constructing star burst railings. If these railings are made out of wood or wrought iron they can blend easily with different styles of railings. However, if these railings are made from wood they cannot be kept outdoors as it may lead to the material being damaged due to the rain and harsh rays of the sun. So, for outdoor settings, star burst railings made from wrought iron and aluminum are preferable.

Peace Lily A Low Light House Plant

By Thomas Fryd

Unless you have a great number of windows, many areas of your home are probably considered low light areas. Generally this is defined as being eight feet or more away from a large window, with no direct light. Many areas of the typical home do not reeive enough natural light. However, you can still grow beautiful houseplants in these areas! There are many plants which will acclimate to low light conditions. They do not require high levels of care, although you should spray them with water occasionally to wash accumulated dust off their leaves. Here are some of the best low-light plants for your home:

Cast Iron Plant, or Aspidistra elatior, is a foliage plant with long, dark green glossy leaves. It has a reputation for growing under even the worst light conditions, and is not particular about temperature or water conditions, either. Watch for mealybugs, mites, and scales, which are known for attacking this plant. You should divide and repot this plant in the spring, when its roots have outgrown the pot.

Zebra Haworthia, another choice for low-light planting, is a succulent plant with white spotted leaves. These thick leaves form rosettes and tube-like flowers that hang on long stalks. It is a small plant, making it an ideal choice for container gardens or small spaces. It should be watered thoroughly, and night temperatures should be around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It should be repotted when it has outgrown the existing pot, in a well-drained porous soil mixture.

Chinese evergreen is another good low-light houseplant. They can even be grown in water, with no soil. There are many varieties with interesting color patterns, which can add variety to your plant selection. The temperature should not fall below 60 Fahrenheit at night. When the plant becomes root-bound, you should repot it.

Snake plant, or Sansevieria trifasciata, is an African plant with thick leaves banded with yellow or dark green. Older plants sometimes grow spikes of yellow or white flowers in greater light conditions. The soil should be sandy with some peat moss, and the plant should be fertilized every 3 to 4 months. You should water this plant thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch.

Split leaf Philodendron is a climbing plant with large leathery leaves. It requires support, such as a pole or lattice, but can easily be cut back to keep it within the space you have. Soil should be kept damp, and this plant prefers humid conditions and temperatures above 60 degrees.

Peace Lily is a plant which comes in many varieties available at garden centers or nurseries. The size of this plant varies greatly, meaning there is likely one to fit your needs. In higher light conditions, it will produce long-lasting, creamy white flowers. Soil should be slightly moist at all times, and temperatures should not drop below 55 or 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pothos, or Devil's Ivy, is a popular hanging foliage plants, and it can also be trained to grow upright on poles. You should keep the temperature warm, and the soil slightly moist at all times.

English Ivy comes in many varieties and grows well in low light conditions. Varieties come with different leaf shapes, colors, and sizes. Ivy can tolerate temperatures as low as 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Screw Pine, or Pandanus veitchii, is a shrub with white-striped, swordlike leaves. This plant prefers humidity, as well as temperatures above 60 degrees. You should allow soil to dry out between waterings, and repot only when rootbound. The plant propagates through suckers that grow out from the base of the plant.

Grape Ivy usually comes in hanging basket or table plant forms. This vine has small, glossy green pointed leaflets and tendrils. Guides on care of Grape Ivy say that this peace lily cultivar enjoys high humidity, and new growth is usually covered with a strange white felt-like substance, which will disappear as the new growth reaches maturity. - 1432

A History of Mexican Tortillas

By KC Kudra

Tortillas got its name from the Spaniards. The word "tortillas" comes from the Spanish word "torta" with the meaning being round cake. Tortillas are eaten everyday not just in Mexico but also in America. Americans put just about anything they can in the tortilla from meat and beans to apples and brown sugar. Ever try peanut butter and jelly in a tortilla? Many eat it that way; also, the tortillas are used with hot dogs, casseroles, and sandwiches.

Tortillas have been enjoyed for hundreds of years but not with these modern fillings.

Tortilla history tells us that the Aztecs were making flour tortillas over 10,000 years before Christ. They ate a lot of corn, either direct from the cob or used as an ingredient in another recipe. The Aztecs would grind the corn into cornmeal and make corn dough, or masa, out of it. This was done by mixing the cornmeal with water, which had to be exactly the right temperature; else, it would be the wrong consistency to make a dough. When the masa was ready, the Aztecs would shape it into a ball and then flatten it into a type of thick pancake. When it was the right size and thickness, the masa dough would have been placed on a hot griddle and cooked quickly.

The tortillas of today are still made with the same ingredients as in tortilla history. Because they are very popular, most tortillas today are made in factories with machinery. They come in a lot of different flavors and you can also make homemade tortillas quite easily. A lot of Mexican foods use tortillas as an ingredient. Tacos, for example, use flour tortillas as the shell. With an enchilada, the tortilla is filled, then rolled up, and cooked. Tortillas are used as turnovers to make quesadillas, which are filled before being fried.

Tortillas are not just for eating. "Tortilla art" is when tortillas are used as a canvas. They are baked and then covered in acrylic, before they are painted. The culture of Latino artists is represented by tortilla art so this is an important part of tortilla history.

Tortilla chips are made from flour tortillas. The tortilla is cut into wedges and these wedges are fried. Corn tortillas are made from vegetable oil, corn, water, and salt. These chips became popular in Los Angeles, California, in the 1940s because they were mass-produced there, but they are still thought of as a Mexican food.

Americans use tortillas for a lot of their foods. It is most common found in burritos, which started long ago in northern Mexico. Tortillas are a traditional food of many people from northern states of Mexico and Native tribes that are found in the Southwestern United States. Just about any restaurant will carry tortillas. You can try many different foods that include them. They are easy to find in the grocery store. You can use your taste buds and imagination to make your own foods, which include the tortillas.

There are plenty of tortilla recipes available if you fancy making your own tortillas and creating some wonderful fillings! - 1432

Braided Money Bonsai Tree

By Keith Markensen

A Braided Money Tree is a lovely and rare plant that can make an outstanding addition to any room in your home. This tree is composed of several trunks that wind around each other, it can reach heights anywhere from a foot tall or more. The bonsai version is around a foot tall, while the fuller sized trees can tower up to seven feet tall.

Plenty of lovely green foliage tops this plant, making for a package that is a decorators dream come true. The bonsai style of this plant, makes it an ideal addition to an indoor garden environment.

Taking care of any type of bonsai plant requires time and planning. By incorporating some simple tips, your Braided Money Tree will thrive for years. Growing one from a seedling requires expert knowledge, and will take years to grow to its maximum potential.

With any bonsai plant, watering is crucial. Most bonsai like to have plenty of water, but proper water drainage is key. This is maintained by two very important factors: soil and the pot.

The soil should contain a mixture of earth and small gravel pebbles which lie in the pot with one or more drain holes. These holes need to be covered with mesh, to allow the water to flow freely but retain the soil. You can also add some river and to the mixture, to create porous areas in the soil which aid in draining. Some bonsai even grow well in a mix of peat, vermiculite and perlite.

The Braided Money Tree prefers much less water than other plants. Once a week is sufficient. Some do well on as little as a cup of water per month, but the amount varies with the pot size and soil composition. Misting the plant is also another recommendation. It helps the plant leaves get extra moisture and keeps them free of dust.

The soil in the pot, should be allowed to dry completely out before another watering. There are several ways to realize if the amount of water is adequate. If the plants leaves become droopy and yellow, this is a sign of too much water. When the leaves are wrinkly and curled up, this means you are not watering it enough.

The Braided Money Tree just like the weeping fig tree requires a medium amount of sunlight. Indirect light is best, but a few hours in the direct sunshine if fine, making sure the area does not become overly hot. A corner that gets some sun and shade, is the ideal location. Being a native of a wet, hot region, the plant will fare well when temperatures drop. If you keep the plant outside on the porch, you need to remember to bring it inside when the temperatures drop below 50 degrees.

It is unnecessary to give the tree fertilizer, specifically in the bonsai plant size and style. Trimming the dead leaves and providing plenty of fresh air, will allow your Braided Money Tree to live for many years. - 1432

Laminate Flooring - Is It the Best Choice for Your Home?

By Ezra Plank

Laminate flooring has become one of the most popular types of flooring for the home. In just ten years laminates have become the trendsetter among floor coverings. The first laminate flooring product was introduced in Sweden in 1989. Pergo brought laminate to the United States in 1994 and now shares the market with hundreds of other brands. This article will introduce you to laminate floors, so that you can decide whether it's the thing for your home.

Laminate flooring is highly resistant to staining and requires very little maintenance, freeing up your time for more productive activities. Just sweep daily with a soft brush, and damp mop as needed. No waxing is necessary. Laminate flooring will not fade, even in direct sunlight.

Laminate flooring is composed of several layers. The layers consist of a bottom layer of moisture-resisting material, then an inner core of fiber-board impregnated with resin. Next comes the decorative design layer which shows the pattern, and finally the wear-layer on top.

Unlike other flooring materials, which are nailed or glued to the sub-floor, laminate flooring "floats" on the sub-floor. Well, not directly on it - a plastic foam-covered sheet is first laid down, for insulation, sound-proofing, and to cover irregularities. The individual strips snap together, and in some instances require some glue along the joints.

A laminate floor provides the realistic look of wood, stone, tile and other more expensive options, but usually at a lower cost. Laminate flooring is made mostly in rectangular 8 inch planks, but some square tiles are also sold. There are single-strip, two-strip and three-strip designs, having square or beveled edges. You will also find a variety of surface treatments and finishes,

Laminate flooring also comes in a variety of qualities, although there is no standard grading system used in America. Choose a quality that is recommended for hard residential use, as anything higher would be unnecessary. Get a 15-year warranty that includes protection against fading, staining, and accidental moisture damage. If there is only a 10-year warranty available, this inicates that the material is of low quality, and will likely be easily damaged by abrasion -- not covered by any warranty.

When choosing a manufacturer, it is wise to pick one of the better-known brand names or distributors. They will be more likely to offer full support for their product, as they have a reputation to maintain. Visit their website, and pay close attention to customer feedback, which is becoming an important tool in making a decision about the quality of laminated flooring being offered.

Now that you know more about what laminate flooring is and what your options are, you should find it easier to decide. So take that big step, buy it, install it, and your new laminate flooring will become the centerpiece of your home decorating project. - 1432

How To Grow Herbs Outdoors or in Container Gardens

By Thomas Fryd

Whether you are growing herbs outdoors or in a container garden, good soil is one of the most fundamental conditions for encouraging healthy plants. While the sun is important for the energy they need for growth and reproduction, these chemical reactions can only occur with components from the soil. For this reason, it is important to grow your herbs in soil which provides all the necessary nutrients.

Water content, nitrogen and phosphorus content, alkalinity, and acidity, are all factors controlled by the soil in which your herbs are planted. Keeping all of these at the right level is one of the most important things you can do to help your herbs thrive. You should do some research on your herbs to find out the necessary soil levels.

In container gardens, all of these levels are up to you to completely control. In outdoor settings, nature provides some help, but you should still monitor these levels to ensure optimum herb growth.

Different herbs have different requirements. For example, lavender grows best in dry, alkaline soil with good drainage. Sage can get root rot if you keep the soil too moist. Nurseries or garden centers can help you determine your herbs' needs and find soil that will help your herbs achieve maximum growth.

Soil is usually categorized as sandy, clay-like, or somewhere in between. Soil with a clay component retains water, while sandy soil provides good drainage. Most herbs require something in the middle of these two extremes. The addition of good compost can help you achieve the right balance, but you should understand your herbs' specific requirements to choose the right soil.

When growing herbs, you also need to watch for pests. These include flying bugs as well as bugs in the soil, which is yet another reason to monitor your soil conditions. However, herbs can also help keep some pests from attacking your other plants. For example, planting herbs can help deter aphids that may be attracted to the scent of roses and certain vegetables. Chives, mint, basil, and cilantro also help control pests. For example, basil can keep tomato hornworm from ruining your tomatoes.

However, you should be aware that some herbs attract pests. Dill and yarrow can attract wasps, but keep some species of beetles away. Tomato hornworms attack dill, but this can keep them away from your tomatoes.

If you are growing herbs but want to avoid pests, you may want to consider a neem oil as a natural pesticide or insecticide. However, keep in mind that if you plan to use your herbs for culinary uses, you should avoid pesticides if possible.

Growing herbs does not have to be difficult. However, if you want healthy plants, watch for pests and provide the right soil type for your herbs. - 1432

Create New Plants From Cuttings

By Keith Markensen

There are a number of ways that professional gardeners propagate new plants. The main methods, which will be described here, are stem cutting and leaf cutting. Creating new stock from cuttings serves a dual purpose: obviously, you are able to produce more plants, but you are also able to trim back the existing plant, maintaining its appearance and health and preventing it from becoming overgrown.

To create cuttings, you rarely require specialized tools. Most of what you need can be found in the average household. You will need a number of pots in varying sizes, a sharp penknife or razor blade and if you think you will need them, a "dibble" and a tamper.

When you are setting cuttings, the same guidelines should be followed. The ideal propagating mixture is vermiculite and then normal potting soil is to be used once the cutting has struck roots.

The time that each cutting takes to develop a root structure will vary according to the variety of plant and the type of cutting. Generally, the minimum time to expect for roots to begin is about three weeks, whilst others may take a much longer time.

To make a stem cutting, a section approximately four to five inches long is sliced with a diagonal cut just below a leaf node. One longer piece from an overgrown plant may provide multiple cuttings. Ensure that these cuttings, or "slips", are made with a sharp knife or razor blade. Never use scissors as they will cause damage to the stem and rot will set in. A diagonal cut allows a greater exposure of the potential rooting surface. Any buds or excess leaves should be removed to encourage stronger rooting.

Select and fill the number of pots you require with the starting mixture. Make a hole for each slip with the dibble or a pencil, carefully place the slips into the hole and then gently press the mixture around the stem of the slip. Don't use the slips themselves to create the hole as this will cause bruising and then rotting. Check that the base of the slip is in contact with the base of the hole to ensure successful rooting. When planting is complete, soak the slips in water either from above of below and then the pots should be covered with a glass jar or similar to prevent moisture loss. If you have a terrarium or a fishbowl that can be drilled, this will hold a number of pots at once, making handling much easier.

The planted slips should then be placed in a shaded spot and kept moist. When the slips have a root structure approximately an inch or so long, they should be repotted into their own pots that have been filled with normal potting soil. This will be on average around three to eight weeks from the time the slips were planted.

You need to be patient when you are creating new plants from cuttings. Avoid the temptation of removing them from the starting mixture to check them as you may damage the roots. Wait at least three to four weeks and you will then be able to perform a test to see if they are ready. At this time, hold the stem at the base between your thumb and index finger and gently pull. If there is resistance, carefully dig the slip out and inspect the roots. If the roots of this slip are long enough for replanting, the other slips should also be ready as they should grow at roughly the same speed.

Check the cuttings at least once or twice a week to ensure that they are moist enough. At this time it is a good idea to allow them to "air" for a short time. When they are ready for transplanting, take the covers off, carefully transplant the new plants taking care not to damage the fragile root system and give them a thorough soaking. Keep these newly transplanted specimens in the shade for another couple of weeks to allow them to get over the transplanting shock, then place them in a sunny spot.

There is no "best" time of the year for making cuttings from most house plants. Utmost care for newly propagated plants are best achieved with this style of propagation is needed especially for plants like Impatiens, Coleus, Geraniums or Pelargoniums, Ivy and Philodendron. - 1432

What You Need to Know about Indoor and Outdoor Plants

By Thomas Fryd

Selecting a plant to fit the environment you plan to put it in is the most important of steps towards having beautiful, healthy plants, flowers and vegetables. Make sure the plant you choose fits the environment it will live in. Temperature ranges, pollutants in the air, and ease of care issues are all things that must be considered.

A house plant is subjected to "dirtier" air relative to the fresh air outside. However, this is compensated by the steady temperature and better care it receives versus what it would likely get out of doors. This means that plants that are not normally native to the area can be grown indoors-tropicals, seasonals, etc.

Air flow is important to the health and survival of most indoor plants. In the summer, this is an easy task-just open the windows for a while and let the air circulate. In winter, this is more of a challenge. The easiest way to accomplish this in winter time is to open a window well away from the plants (to avoid a draft) and let the daytime air circulate a little. Keeping plants out of cold drafts is a must, as even the shortest-duration, cold breeze can mean death to a tropical plant.

Watering plants is another concern that requires some attention. Knowing how much water your plant needs and how well its container drains are paramount to success here. Humidity, heat, pot size, plant type, soil type, and more all contribute to how often you should water a plant. Some will require water daily, some weekly, some hardly at all.

Obviously, in a hot and dry room, plants will need much more water than they will in a humid, cooler room. So plants in the living room might need water more often than plants in the bathroom. Plants such as cacti or needled leaved plants will need much less water than plants with broad leaves or ferns.

Over watering is just as dangerous as under watering and if you have a choice between the two, under watering is best. Learning to give the proper amount of water is the solution you should aim for, obviously, so learn how your plant thirsts, how its pot drains, etc. and get the timing right.

You'll learn when to water your house plants over time, as you observe and learn their needs. When raising indoor plants as well as outdoor plants, it's not difficult once you get in the habit of watching and monitoring the watering and its effects. Soaking the plant and then leaving it without water for a time is better than constant watering-for both you and the plant.

Having plants is a little work, but pays off well in the beauty and healthy living it provides to you and your home. Enjoy your plants and make your life more beautiful! - 1432

Fertilizer and Irrigation Ensure Gardening Success

By Dave Truman

Loamy soil, which is a mixture of sand, silt, and clay, is the best kind of soil for producing a healthy garden. It crumbles easily in your hand, and does not have too much clay, which retains moisture and messes with drainage. It is also not too sandy; therefore it provides adequate support for growing plants, and the needed nutrients.

The key to achieving loamy soil is twofold: quality fertilizer and proper water supply.

By testing the soil before you start, you will know what things you need to add to balance it out. A simple testing kit checks nutrient and pH levels. When growing vegetables pH levels are very important because some prefer acidic soil, while others thrive in a more basic setting. In general, most do best when grown in soil that tests between 6.0 and 6.5.

To adjust the pH level sulfur or lime, nutrients found in most fertilizers, should be added. These adjustments should be made several months before you plan on planting, which, in Northern climates, may mean after the fall harvest.

Compost piles are a great source of nutrients, and should be added to the topsoil three weeks before planting. Tilling the compost into the top layer of soil helps to speed up the introduction of the nutrients into the soil. Organic and artificial fertilizers, such as NPK 8-8-8 can be added right before planting to supplement the soil. In general, about twenty pounds per thousand square feet is sufficient.

Vegetable plants love water, however sitting in a bed of water can cause root rot. By maintaining moist soil, plants can receive the proper amount of water they need to grow and support themselves.

Water helps out plants in a number of ways. It aids in the carrying of nutrients throughout the plant, plays a part in the process of photosynthesis, and helps the cell structures to remain stiff and firm. Most gardens need about an inch of water per week, which equates to 65 gallons per 100 square feet. The amount of water, of course, depends on the type of soil. From spring to fall it is vital to monitor the rainfall and supplement any additional water that your plants may need.

This, thankfully, is not difficult.

When water is applied to vegetable plants under moderate temperatures, they do not wilt like flowering plants do; however, it is still necessary to water with care. By watering early in the day the top layer of soil and leaves can dry out by the time cool night temperatures arrive, keeping fungi at bay. Some choose to build modest drip irrigation systems out of rubber tubing. These effect and inexpensive systems should be placed at the base of the plant to ensure the roots are receiving a proper supply of water.

With a drip irrigation system in place, only the occasionally traditional watering is necessary. This serves to clean the leaves and keep their pores open. Watering when it is hot outside is unproductive as it causes the pores to open, and evaporate more moisture then they have been given. Water droplets may also act as miniature magnifying glasses and burn small holes in the leaves. - 1432

Vegetable Gardening - How to Control Disease

By Dave Truman

The struggle to keep your plants free from disease is ongoing. One way to make the battle a little easier is by using a number of methods to protect your plants.

To start with, proper preparation of soil and selection of seeds are a must. In selecting a plant to transplant, make sure it is free of disease and remove any diseased sections to prevent infection of healthy plants.

By watering early in the day you ensure that the leaves are dry before the cool, moist night air sets in. It is also important to be careful when watering plants, because diseases can be carried in runoff water from other plants, in the same way that a sneeze can transfer a cold from one person to another.

Many viruses are spread by contact, and insects are common carries. In order to keep this under control, maintain close watch on the insect population in your garden. Humans and animals are also at fault for the spread of some diseases, such as tobacco mosaic virus.

By regularly weeding the garden, it is not only more attractive, it is also a healthier environment for plants to thrive in. Many harmful organisms feed on weeds, and are then carried to your precious vegetables by insects, water movement and the wind.

A little education never hurt, especially when it comes to disease recognition. Often, by spotting early warning signs, you can help prevent an outbreak among your whole garden.

Problems such as mold should be given proper attention. By removing infected sections, or perhaps the entire plant, the problem can be kept under control. When the outer edges of lettuce touch the ground, a wet rot may start to form at the base, causing lettuce mold. Other molds to look out for are the white Sclerotinia mold and the gray Botrytis mold.

When spinach leaves become blotchy and turn a yellowish color, it is often the sign of spinach mosaic virus. Plant growth is stunted, and the leaves wilt. By working with, or growing, resistant varieties you proactively eliminate the problem from the start.

Fungi that attack asparagus plants can cause a number of problems. Wilting or rotting plants, as well as discoloration of the shoots and roots can be caused by Fusarium. Removing infected plants can help keep the problem under control. Red spots on the spears and shoots are the result of the Puccinia fungus. Some strong fungus strains may even survive through the winter. In order to keep these problems to a minimum, it is necessary to avoid over watering.

Tomato plants are subject to a number of problems including leaf spots and disfigurement. Most diseases attack in mid-August, particularly when the summer has been on the cool side. Diseases infecting the soil, such as a number of fungi, may move into the tomato plant. Harmful toxins produced by walnut trees can be carried through the soil by roots, and attack your crop. Watching leaves for dark, circular rings is important, and making sure that leaves are dry by nightfall can help lower the risk of infection.

The key to producing a healthy crop of vegetables is by recognizing the warning signs of disease, and dealing with the early, as well as proactively protecting your garden. - 1432

10 Ways to Ensure That Your Garden Roses Stay Fresh in the Summer

By Amy Nutt

The heat of summer might be nice for kids to splash in the pool, but it can wreak havoc on your garden roses if you don`t know how to keep them nice and fresh. Looking after your flowers means they`ll be around year after year and you`ll be able to enjoy fresh cut flowers indoors or blooming ones outside.

1. Fertilize. Using the right fertilizer is key, look for one formulated for roses. Also, be sure not to fertilize after August 15th or your roses will bloom too late in the season and be killed by the early frosts.

2. Prune. Do your pruning early in the season to allow for more blooms throughout the summer months. Snipping old flower heads and leaving five leaves below is the best way to do this. Pruning will cause the bush to grow quickly over the summer months.

3. Water. In the heat of summer, your roses will need more water than usual. A heavy watering in the morning is excellent and a light misting at night will help keep those flowers dewy fresh. Never water during the day, when droplets can concentrate the sunlight and cause the leaves and flowers to burn.

4. Soil. Having the right soil will allow the water to reach the roots of your bushes and will draw the roots down. This is why a heavy watering is good, it establishes a deep root system which means the roses will be drawing water even when the top layer of soil is dry. Look for soft, loamy soil mixed with a bit of sand for drainage.

5. Planting. To ensure that your new roses have the best chance at surviving summer, dig a 12 inch hole and fill it with compost and bonemeal. It`s a good idea to loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole, as well, to encourage deep roots.

6. Light. The majority of roses love sunlight and are quite happy with direct sunlight for 6 or so hours a day. However, it`s important to note that there are some hybrids that need shade, so check with your nursery to be sure you are planting your roses in the right place.

7. Spacing. Roses need room to breathe, so don`t crowd them into your flower bed. Allow for plenty of room for air to circulate around them and they will stay cooler and fresher during even the hottest parts of the day.

8. Spray. Unfortunately, all that warm weather is great for pests, too, so you`ll probably need to spray your roses with a repellant of some sort (home made or commercial) to keep these hungry critters at bay.

9. Mulch. Pile a little mulch around the base of your roses to hold in water and keep the roots cool. This is a very simple task that can be done throughout the summer as the mulch is dispersed.

10. Hose. Using the right hose is important. You want one that is flexible enough you can snake it between plants and water the roots.

Roses aren`t as finicky as many people think, especially these days, but they do need some special care for those hot summer months. Taking the care needed to keep the plants fresh and cool will result in healthier roses and fresher blooms throughout the summer, so you can enjoy your flowers all year long. Healthy roses during the summer can provide a myriad of opportunities. It really isn't that difficult to look after roses if you follow the ten tips given above. - 1432

Expressing gratitude with Thank you flowers

By Amy Nutt

It is a sad fact of life is that we often complain more than we say anything positive and we don't tend to show our affection and devotion to the ones we care about until a loved one is gone. It doesn't have to be that way; in fact, there are numerous methods that we can employ that tell the people in our lives we appreciate them for all the little things they do.

One approach that underlines this sentiment is the purchase of thank you flowers.

These arrangements can be fun and frilly, romantic and intimate - or friendly and playful, but whatever the mood, you will always hit the right note with these marvelous tokens of esteem.

Now, some people may wonder what situations will prompt the purchase of thank you flowers - the answer? Any kind.

Below are a few scenarios when one may feel inclined to send a thank you bouquet or basket. Just remember to keep the person and their temperament in mind prior to purchase. It may also be helpful to know if the individual is allergic to a specific type of flower.

After a party

You were invited to the blow out event of the year and had the time of your life! Show your undying gratitude with a small yet cordial floral cluster. The host or hostess will greatly appreciate the gesture and you will come up smelling like proverbial rose, guaranteeing an invite to the next soiree.

After a nice gift

When someone gives us a significant gift like a rare bottle of wine, expensive jewelry or an extremely costly item of clothing, we may be at a loss of how to respond. Why not show what the gesture meant to you with a thoughtful gift of your own? A present of flowers can let the person know how touched you were by the astonishing present and that it was greatly enjoyed.

To express gratitude for being there

There are so many crossroads in life that we come to that can be difficult to travel alone. After a break up, divorce, death or other monumental happening in life, a friend who is there for us is worthy of high esteem and reward. While thank you flowers cannot come close to this display of care, it can indicate that you acknowledged that they were there fro you and what it meant to you. Often times people who give of themselves are seldom told how important their presence means. Thank you flowers can do that and more.

Thinking about you

Romantic partners who have travelled a long way together can look back over the years and see a landscape of highs and lows. Sending a thank you floral bouquet lets your significant other know that you are appreciative of the fact that they have stood by you despite the tough times. Little gestures like this, while they seem small, are one way a couple can keep their love alive.

Just a general "thank you"

"You helped me out when I needed it most," "Thanks for the wonderful Thanksgiving meal, it was terrific" "I couldn't have organized that charity event without you", are all sentiments that can be expressed via the purchase of a lush bouquet of thank you flowers.

If you are uncertain as to what flowers will best state how you feel, don't fret. An experienced florist knows the kind of arrangements that best suit the occasion and can suggest several lovely bouquets that fit well into your budget.

Don't wait to let the people you love know what they mean to you - tell then today with a colorful bouquet of thank you flowers. - 1432

How to Grow an Apartment Garden

By Keith Markensen

Even if you live in a small apartment, you can grow a garden for fresh vegetables and herbs. In fact, many plants can be grown in an apartment, some in a window box and others on a patio. There are hundreds of plants, vegetables, and flowers that you can grow in containers. You can even buy containers to match any dcor.

If you are lucky enough to have a patio off your apartment, this will lend itself well to gardening. If you don't have a patio to use, you can still place plants near the window to give them sunlight, or choose plants that grow well in the shade. If you lack floor space or a patio, you can also grow plants on trellises to use vertical space. Or, try hanging baskets. Even strawberry plants can be grown in this manner.

If you wish to grow flowers in your apartment, annuals are probably the best choice. You won't have to worry about what to do with your perennials during the winter months. Be aware that some flowers can attract certain flying insect. For your apartment, choose flowers such as magnolias that repel insects and rodents.

Once you've chosen the plants, you'll also need to select a container in which to grow them. Choosing the right container from the beginning can help your plants grow successfully. You can grow many vegetables from seeds, but if they are replanted too often, they will not thrive. Typically, plants grown in vegetable gardens, like tomatoes, can handle one replanting just fine. However, especially once they start to bear fruit, you should leave them alone in their container.

When you're buying a container for your plants, imagine what they will look like when full-grown. Consider the size of the mature plant, and whether you will have enough room to let it grow in the apartment or on your patio unrestricted. For example, a hanging basket can be a great choice to hang outside your apartment, but if it is too small for the plant to grow freely, its growth will be stifled.

There are many varieties of plants that can be grown in small areas. You can have beautiful orchids, or potted plants, or palms like the bamboo palm plant. So be sure to choose these when shopping for plants to grow in your apartment. You can grow everything from herbs and vegetables to foliage and even beautiful flowers in your apartment, if you consider the plants' requirements before purchasing them. - 1432

Using Vines In Your Garden Effectively

By Thomas Fryd

Vines are an excellent choice for a new garden. They are fast growers, and can grow to cover an arch or pergola almost before the start of summer. They are an easy way to soften the harsh lines of new buildings, and can provide shade when grown on an arch or other decorative element.

Vines can also be a great choice for older homes. Many vines make excellent groundcover, and can also camouflage building foundations, walls, or fences.

To choose the right vine for your space, consider the methods by which the vines climb. Some, such as grape vines, require a lattice or fence for their tendrils to grasp. Others, like Boston ivy, are sticky, so they can grasp a brick or stone wall. Some, like the honeysuckle, climb by wrapping around branches or poles. However, keep in mind that these can wrap around other plants, overwhelming them.

To make the best use of your vines, carefully train them to climb against a support such as an arbor, trellis, or wall. If you wish to have vines climbing the walls of your house, you may wish to put up a trellis, so that it can be removed, allowing flexibility in your garden.

To plant vines, simply dig a hole in well-drained soil. If your vines are perennials, take special care to plant them right.

For covering walls or other large obstacles, ivy is the most popular type of vine. Boston ivy grows very quickly, but Japanese bittersweet ivy is also a suitable choice. Winter creeper is another hardy vine to grow against walls, and it can cling easily to concrete, brick, or stone. Many other ivies, such as English ivy and Virginia creeper, are also excellent choices.

Many other types of vines cannot support themselves on the wall, but they can be trained to climb a trellis, and can add color and beauty to many areas. Some of the more colorful varieties include wisteria, with clusters of white and purple flowers, and clematis, which grows large flowers from early summer through fall. Another popular variety is trumpet creeper, with tropical-looking clusters of red and orange flowers which bloom in the late summer. Trumpet honeysuckle grows clusters of re and yellow flowers with a wonderful fragrance, and the scarlet runner bean has beautifully colored, large flowers. Most of these vines are a great source of shade for hot summer days.

For covering areas where grass will not grow well, try periwinkle, a beautiful evergreen vine with blue flowers all summer. Fragrant blossoming annual vines include the nasturtium, the ornamental passion fruit, and the cypress vine, which grows many star-shaped flowers in varied colors, and morning glories.

As you can see, there are nearly endless varieties of vines which can be used to cover walls, arbors, or trellises. They have a variety of leaves and shapes, as well as flower shapes and colors. There is a vine out there for any garden. - 1432

Plan for a Fence Now

By Andrew Riddle

Thinking you want to put off fence building and maintenance until the Spring, say, between March and November? Well, the reality is that winter is an even better time for planning your fence construction and repairs. Between December and February, your fence is getting beat on by severe weather, so now's the time to inspect closely.

Making plans is harder when there are more distractions. The colder months have always been useful for planning and taking stock, so consider walking around the area you want to fence. Look for possible issues, such as property lines and tree roots. These will be trouble later, but they can be easy to spot on bare winter ground.

Depending on your region, it's probably too cold to do any real fence work, but what about getting down your trusty tape measure and filling in a sketch with the details you need. Then you can begin looking for the kinds of fencing options for your job, and figure out if pre-made panels or building from scratch makes more sense.

There are lots of good sources for the information you need to gather next. Books, magazines, as well as the library and internet all contain a vast wealth of fencing knowledge, both practical and abstract. Things to discover include material options for your geographic region. Some woods do not make good fencing solutions in some areas, due to insect and water penetration.

If your price point is such that you cannot afford a higher grade wood fence and you have to go with a lesser wood product, there are a couple of options that will help with the overall life of the fence. One is to treat the wood with a sealer, which may or may not be feasible. If it's a very large fence, this might be more work than you care to do.

Fence post caps are another excellent way to protect your fence investment. While being a decorative finishing touch, post caps and finials also help to keep the ends of posts from being penetrable by water and insects. Post caps can be installed in the winter months without too much work, but most companies recommend that you use an adhesive to affix them, so keep in mind the glue setup properties in cold, wet weather.

This is a great time of the year to go out and inspect your fence and deck posts for damage. If you see swelling and or splitting of any kind then you know water or insects may have gotten into the posts. One of the harshest things that happen to these posts is a rain that has seeped into the wood then freezes and thaws. Every time the water inside the pots freezes it expands and causes the wood to be pushed out from the inside. Can you say split?

In addition to the ever-popular wood fence, vinyl and metal fencing options each have distinct advantages worth investigating. Privacy and picket fences can be made of vinyl and yet resemble wood very well. Wrought iron and aluminum fencing makes an attractive yard perimeter as well. There are lots of choices, but I hope you'll agree, there's no time like the present to think about and plan your fence project. - 1432

Pros And Cons Of Using Woodworking Plans

By Leslie Allan

If you talk to woodworkers they each have their personal opinions on what is the proper way to do things. Like anything else, you can go and ask one question and get several contrasting answers. One of the main questions a new woodworker will ask is ,which is better: following plans or working from scratch? Here are some of the arguments raised for both parts of this inquiry.

To confirm the argument that is always easier to use woodworking plans and pattern designs, here are the elements this is likely based on.

- For the novice it is really the only way. The blueprints accommodate everything they want to know to get started.

- Beginners have a tough time understanding how they want the accomplished project to look.

They have a genuine idea of what they wish ,but they arent able to project it out without some help.

- Plans save time due to the fact that there is not as much time exhausted on revising the project. Its all there in the plan, you just follow the step by step directions.

-They can be price savers. One, by the way they outline exactly what materials you are going to call for. Then you dont squander money on buying items you dont require. Secondly you will trim waste as youre not as likely to mess up on your cuts and things like that.

That addresses the supporting arguments for why woodworking plans are best, now lets look at the arguments of why working from scratch is advisable instead.

- Frequently if you have a unique item in mind that you would wish to form, then you may not be able to acquire the plan for it. Often when individuals are building something they want it to be unusual. You wont get that when you are using plans.

- Just because its a woodwork plan, doesnt mean that it will be understandable or easy to follow. Sometimes the plans can get quite complicated. Also you may not be educated with some of the terminology that is written in the design.

- What country the projects were designed in could be an issue as well. For instance measures and material could be diverse.

- If you are an experienced craftsman or you are past the point of being a beginner then you will witness that the plans will start to get boring. You may also start to lose interest in the project is it is too elementary for you.

- One of the worst things that can befall is they may not be correct. For the novice this could be baffling. Mostly due to the fact that you wont have the experience perhaps to prevent the fault before you make it, or be able to correct it once you have.

- You are able to acquire planning skills if you do your own wood work plans. In the start there will be a bit of trial and error. Once you have reached this stage you are not likely to be a novice so you will have a complete idea as to what your own plan needs.

- Ultimately, possibly the most noteworthy factor is that your own design is more individualised. Once its finished you will have the gratification of recognizing it is completely your work from start to end. Furthermore, it is one of a kind, and it is not found anywhere else in the world! - 1432

Beginner Bonsai Care

By Paprika Claesson

Bonsai care is a meditative and rewarding process, one which can be easy even for beginners. Through bonsai care, you will enjoy an appreciation for nature and humanity's ability to skillfully produce even more amazing artistry.

As a beginning bonsai gardener, you may have many questions about appropriate bonsai care. By understanding the fundamentals, you can build a firm foundation upon which you can confidently grow your skills and expertise, right along with your new bonsai garden!

Bonsai Care: Starting Out

The Basics of any garden is the appropriate combination of the right soil, the correct amount of light and right amount of water.

There are, however a few things that differentiates bonsai trees from other plants. Most people starting out with their first tree don't know that most bonsai are bred to be outdoors. There are certain species that could survive indoors, so if that is your plan make sure to do some research on the ideal species for your conditions and also but be prepared to give it around 12 hours a day of fluorescent light.

To use the right soil for your tree is an important part of bonsai care. Since your bonsai will grow in a shallow pot which means that the roots will spread out shallowly and slow down your tree's growth. On the other hand, if your tree was growing in the "wild" it would grow tall due to the root systems deep growth into the earth. Forcing the roots to live in a shallow container is one of the fundamentals to why your bonsai will stay small. This also means that regular potting soil is usually too dense and collects too much water which will slowly make the roots waterlogged, causing the roots to rot and later, the tree to die.

Bonsai soil is usually a mix of sand, loam, and organic leaf mold or peat moss. The climate you live in determines what exact soil to use. I suggest to ask your local nursery, bonsai shop or local bonsai enthusiast what soil is the right one for your tree.

Food and Water for your bonsai

Of course, the one question all beginner bonsai gardeners have is "when should I water my bonsai?" The answer to this important bonsai care question depends upon what kind of bonsai you have, how humid or dry the air is around your bonsai, what time of the year it is, and other variables.

The balance in proper bonsai care is between too much and too little. It can be a bit tricky. Also make sure if you use tap water, that it is room temperature and also let it sit overnight to get rid of chemicals such as chlorine

You want to start with wetting the soil, which will help your bonsai to take in more water. Next you soak the soil until water comes out through the bottom of the pot, make sure that all the soil gets wet. The best time to water your bonsai is in the morning before it starts its photosynthesis cycle. It could be good also, depending on the climate you live in to mist your tree to make sure it keeps its humidity level.

The fertilizer you want to use every other week or so is a completely balanced fertilizer, which means, 1 part phosphorous, 1 part nitrogen and 1 part potassium. Remember to never fertilize a dry or sick tree, the shock could actually kill it. Before fertilizing, make sure to give your tree plenty of water.

With the right amount of water and light, along with appropriate soil and fertilizer, you are well on your way to growing a beautiful bonsai collection. Bonsai care does not have to be difficult, as long as you remember to meet the fundamental needs your beautiful bonsai plant has. - 1432

Assorted Tips On Organic Gardening

By Abel MacLaren

Many people do organic gardening as a relaxing hobby. It gives a sense of well being when they achieve a colorful show of flowers and plants. Some people go further than that, and grow their own food.

Nowadays, organically grown products can be bought even in supermarkets. Yet, producing your own has a special satisfaction to it. You then feel you are in complete control over how the food you eat was actually grown.

Any use of things like herbicides, chemical fertilizers etc. is a no-no when doing organic gardening. Do you get pest problems? Sure, it happens - but you can handle those wthout resorting to chemicals.

Remember, in the old days people made it without chemicals and that worked. You just need to know the tricks; like for instance getting rid of aphids by planting marigolds near your vegetables.

In conventional food production, many more or less toxic chemicals are routinely used. You read in the papers how some of this may contaminate the food we eat. Switching to organically grown food means you no longer need to be concerned about such dangers to your health.

Organic gardening will involve the mysterious world of compost making. This is much more interesting than grabbing a bag of chemical fertilizer. It's not such a dark art really, you just need to know what to use, and the more variety there is the better.

Basically, it's a great way of using up garden and kitchen waste material. You can use your own potato and other vegetable peelings. Rose prunings will help with the texture and coffee grounds will improve the smell! Make sure all the ingredients are dry.

There are many little tricks of the trade in organic gardening. Like, you can mix some cooking oil with water, with the help of some laundry soap, to get a nice mixture for spraying on such pests as aphids.

Somewhere on the way, we all lost the natural connection to nature, and we got used to jumping in the car to go to the soulless supermarket to buy bland food. Many of us like to re-connect to what we lost - by organic gardening. - 1432

Universal Tips For Making An Impact With Flower Gifts

By Chris Channing

Flowers are a universal gift, but few understand the right flower to give for a special situation. The art of giving the perfect gift is a tough one to master, but there are a few rules to follow when buying flowers for all occasions- whether for a romance or for a special "thank you" gift to a friend.

Color is one of the biggest factors in determining what a gift of flowers means. White, for instance, is usually associated with "pure" moments, such as a wedding. White is also a popular choice for funerals, where the lack of color is usually devoid of any other questionable meanings. Other colors such as green may be more "quirky" and for friendly encounters.

As was described in the popular song "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison, different types of flowers will have greatly different meanings. In this case the ever popular rose, despite its beauty, can be used to create a drastically opposite effect just because of the physical make up of the flower- and all because a rose has thorns!

Arrangements of flowers and bouquets of flowers are fairly popular in certain events, such as weddings or yearly holidays. An arrangement is great for all occasions, since it appeals to many tastes, usually has a high level of quality exhibited in its arrangement, as is sometimes even paired with edible goods or small toys to make the gift even more universally acceptable.

The circumstance in which flowers are presented can also create a whole new meaning for the situation. For a romantic getaway, it's popular to take the pedals off of a rose and put them in the bed or around the bedroom. Even after mutilating a rose, it's awe inspiring to see how romantic fractures of a flower can impact a moment. This route is usually reserved for rose pedals only, however, due to their large and luscious nature.

Something that shouldn't be overlooked is the fact that most flowers will come with a small note card that can be written on to show a short message. It's usually best to make use of this note card to say something meaningful, describe the reason for the gift, or to otherwise leave an impact on the recipient. This is sometimes the only real way to get a special message to the recipient and to avoid confusion.

In Conclusion

Flowers are a powerful gift used in many situations, and as we can see, the possibilities are endless in how they are given. Take color, size, presentment, and the environment into effect when staging the perfect gift giving experience for the recipient. - 1432

That means that there are a lot of companies fighting for the chance to have your business and deliver flowers for you. There are so many options available, that it can be difficult to find what you are looking for, and a reputable company that can get the job done. Florists that are low quality just are not worth your time, so avoid them if possible.

The first step is to determine what kind of flowers you want delivered, and to who they are being delivered to. Romantic flowers, such as red roses are best given to a significant other or someone that you deeply care for. These flowers can be found on most florists websites for delivery. Finding flower deliveries online is easy, you just need to know where you want to begin. If you want exotic or rare flowers, you will have to dig a little deeper to find that perfect floral arrangement.

The next step is to decide on a budget, ranging from the minimum to a maximum. Knowing a budget for your flower delivery is important as well, so that you can prepare to get your monies worth. No one likes over spending on something! Your budget will also decide where you get your flowers, because some flower deliveries online charge much higher prices than others.

You will also need to consider a delivery time frame, as well as what kind of company these flowers are coming from. Some flower deliveries online are cheap, and offer you low quality flowers that only look beautiful for a day or two. You want an arrangement that will last the receiver of the flowers a week at least.

Reputation is likely the most important part of the flower delivery service. Online flower delivery services are usually fantastic, but you want more than fantastic. You should never settle for less. A flower delivery service that offers 100% guarantees as well as high quality service should be of the most important to you.

Lastly, you should ask people you know that have received flowers through a floral delivery service online. Their satisfaction with the flower delivery service should be sublime, you shouldn't go for a company that is only "so-so". Would you want flowers that were only "okay" or normal? Everyone loves receiving outstandingly gorgeous flowers.

Find Out How To Use Woodworking Plans For Your Project

By Kelly Turner

If you speak to woodworkers they each have their own views on what is the proper manner to do things. Like anything else, you can go and ask one question and get numerous unique answers. One of the main inquiries a new craftman will ask is ,which is better: following plans or working from scratch? Here are some of the arguments brought up for both parts of this inquiry.

To second the debate that is always easier to use woodworking plans, here are the components this is likely based on.

- For the novice it is actually the only way. The designs carry everything they need to know to get started.

- Beginners have a hard time seeing how they want the accomplished project to look.

They have a sound idea of what they desire ,but they arent able to design it out without some help.

- Plans save a lot time as there is not as much time expended on revising the project. Its all there in the plan, you just follow the step by step directions.

-They can be cost savers. One, by the way they outline exactly what materials you are going to want. Then you dont waste money on purchasing materials you dont need. Secondly you will trim waste as youre not as likely to mess up on your cuts and things like that.

That addresses the supporting arguments for why woodworking plans are best, now lets look at the arguments of why working from scratch is better instead.

- Oftentimes if you have a particular item in mind that you would like to make, then you may not be able to receive the plan for it. Often when individuals are making something they want it to be special. You wont get that when you are utilizing plans.

- Just because its a woodwork plan, doesnt mean that it will be understandable or easy to follow. Sometimes the plans can get quite complicated. Also you may not be educated with some of the language that is written in the design.

- What country the projects were planned in could be an issue as well. For illustration measures and material could be contrasting.

- If you are an experienced woodworker or you are past the point of being a beginner then you will see that the plans will start to get boring. You may also begin to lose focus in the project is it is too elementary for you.

- One of the worst things that can materialise is they may not be right. For the novice this could be daunting. Mostly as you wont have the experience perhaps to prevent the fault before you make it, or be able to correct it once you have.

- You are able to acquire designing skills if you practise your own woodworking plans. In the beginning there will be a bit of trial and error. Once you have reached this stage you are not likely to be a novice so you will have a good idea as to what your own plan needs.

- In Conclusion, possibly the most primary factor is that your own design is more individualised. Once its completed you will have the satisfaction of knowing it is wholly your work from beginning to finish. Furthermore, it is one of a kind, and it is not found anywhere else in the world! - 1432

Interested in Organic Gardening? Consider These 10 Tips

By Amy Nutt

Imagine providing your family with food that you know is healthy, because you grew it yourself without the help of chemicals. With organic gardening this is possible. Redenta's Organic gardening involves using natural pest control and fertilizers to grow flowers, vegetables, and fruits, rather than commercially produced and environmentally hazardous pesticides and fertilizers. If you are interested in organic gardening, consider these ten tips.

Tip 1 - Use Natural Pest Control

Your garden is going to have pests. Once you have identified them, research natural controllers you could add to the garden. These natural controllers could be other insects, such as ladybugs to control an aphid population, or plants, such as garlic to prevent armyworms or apple maggots.

Tip 2 - Rotate Plants Regularly

Rotating your plant sites will keep them healthy and also help control some pest populations. When you rotate your plants, the soil has a chance to recoup. Each plant takes different nutrients from the soil, and some even return nutrients to the soil. Properly rotating your plants each year will keep your entire garden healthy.

Tip 3 - Prune Plants Carefully

Remove any dead parts you find on your plants. They are not going to heal, and they will cause the plant to become diseased. Do not leave them on the ground near the plant, either. Remove them from the garden and destroy them right away.

Tip 4 - Make Good Compost

Compost is the best way to feed your organic garden. Compost is not difficult to make. Simply layer leaves, lawn clippings, and organic kitchen waste in your compost heap. If you need to get the compost started quickly, you can add a compost starter to the mix. Keep in mind that the good compose is at the bottom of the pile, so you will need to have a way to turn it or access the pile from the bottom. Once you have a nice amount of compost, work it into your soil to create rich organic soil.

Tip 5 - Air Your Compost Pile

Compost needs air to properly decompose. You can add air by turning the compost pile regularly. You can also provide the pile with air by putting a PVC pipe into it in the center of the pile. Also, build the pile on a layer of branches and sticks to provide some air from the bottom.

Tip 6 - Choose Organic Fertilizers

Organic fertilizer will help your plants grow bigger and healthier. This is particularly important if you are growing food. Choose a low-dose fertilizer, however, because they will not burn the roots of your plants or provide too much of any particular nutrient.

Tip 7 - Purchase Organic Seeds

Since seeds come from plants, the only way to have a truly organic garden is to buy organic seeds. You cannot sell your produce as USDA certified organic if you do not use organic seeds. Organic seeds must come from open pollinated or hybrid plants. Seeds from non-organic plants have been exposed to pesticides and other chemicals, so they may not grow properly.

Tip 8 - Test Your Soil

Your soil is not going to contain all of the nutrients your plants need. Test it to determine what nutrients are missing. Then, alter your fertilizer and compost materials to provide the missing nutrients to the soil.

Tip 9 - Water Carefully

The soil in your garden needs to feel moist, but over-watering can lead to disease and strip nutrients out of the soil. Typically, plants need an inch of water per week. You can keep a rain gauge in the garden to help you determine how much water it needs.

Tip 10 - Intercrop

Intercropping, which refers to growing one crop in between rows of another crop, is an important organic gardening technique. Planting a vegetable garden, herbs and flowers, such as mint or marigolds, in between your vegetables will keep some pests away. Also, intercropping improves the soil nutrient levels. - 1432

Using Online Florists For Special Winter Deals

By James B. Markus

Are you finding it difficult to procure an amazing gift for someone close to you this holiday season? Have you thought about using local online florists? Everyone loves flowers, and they even offer the ability to design any floral arrangements yourself!

Local online florists are kept on their toes during the holiday season, and they work very hard to deliver. You can conveniently forego the pains of holiday shopping by doing your purchasing through these florists.

Florists that are local and have an online presence can help you with your floral purchase. Sometimes they can offer better prices when you order multiple arrangements at a time. Usually they will accept all major credit cards. Many will also accept other forms of online payment. One of the advantages of working with a florist is that they can create a custom arrangement for you if what you want is not readily available.

Christmas Flowers come in many shapes and sizes. Everyone recognizes the poinsettia as a traditional flower. Actually it is more thought of as a plant than a flower, but the red and green colors are exactly what you are looking for to project the Christmas spirit from the center of your dining room table.

Bouquets in each price range are available in a variety of sizes and types. People love to receive a bouquet as a gift. Your special someone would be delighted to be surprised with beautiful flowers from you. It's a good way to show your love even when you are far away.

Valentine's Day happens to be the second most important occasion for these florists. Valentine's day flowers are the perfect accompaniment to the romance in the air. Although roses and carnations are the two eternal choices for this day, you may have a lot more options open if you care to order well in advance. Flowers in a multitude of colors herald the onset of the holidays.

Flowers that are commonly used for Valentine's Day are sometimes genetically altered to achieve specific color schemes. People who believe that red stands for love may choose red flowers for their beloved. Others may not subscribe to these beliefs but instead think about the color preferences of the recipient. - 1432

Tips for Keeping Garden Pests Away

By Keith Markensen

It may seem like you can never get rid of the pests in your garden. However, you don't need to resort to chemicals if you want to get rid of pests on your flowers and vegetables. There are many natural remedies for pest control, which are much less harmful to your garden environment than poisonous pesticides. Natural remedies are much safer for wildlife, as well as your pets and children. Plus, it costs less than store-bought pesticides.

Every year, over 136 million pounds of pesticides are dumped on lawns and gardens or used inside the home. This is three times as much as farmers use. A lot of the contamination from pesticides actually comes from homes, not large-scale farms. If you're looking for an environmentally way to control the insects in your garden, consider natural remedies that are much gentler. Here are a few remedies you can use instead of adding more chemicals to the soil:

Make sure your garden is healthy to begin with. Start with well-prepared soil that has excellent drainage and air circulation, with compost to provide nutrients for your plants. To encourage healthy plants, you should also keep your garden mulched, and add compost frequently.

After planting your garden, be sure to remove any weak plants, disposing of them well away from your garden. Weeds, discarded plants, and compost should not be kept near your garden if you want to keep pests away. Your garden should also be kept free of any other debris where insects or other pests may feed or breed.

One natural remedy you can try is seaweed fertilizer spray. It contains minerals and other elements, like iron, zinc, calcium, sulfur, barium, and magnesium. These strengthen the soil, and help your plants thrive. If your plants are growing well, they will be better able to resist pests.

You can also keep pests away by considering how you are planting your garden. Mix plants up, instead of planting areas of certain species. This will make it much harder for insects to spread between plants. Rotate plants year by year, and you will be able to get rid of insects that feed on specific plants.

Also be sure to water your plants early in the day. This will give the leaves time to dry out, which is important because if your leaves are wet as night falls, insects and fungi may move in.

If, despite your best efforts, several of your plants become infected, be sure to remove them as soon as you see them. Before using your gardening tools near healthy plants, you should disinfect them, just like a doctor would. This will keep the pests or infection from spreading.

One way to keep harmful insects at bay is by attracting beneficial insects. If you can't seem to attract them, you can actually buy several species from catalogs. Brachonids, Chalcids, ladybugs, praying mantises, hover flies, and some species of wasps can all help keep pests at bay. These, in addition to air-purifying indoor plants, are powerful allies in your fight against garden pests!

If your goal is to grow a healthy and beautiful garden while maintaining clean air in your surroundings, try to keep pests at bay using natural pesticides. You can learn more about natural pesticides on the internet, or at your local gardening store. There are many different options available, so once you determine which plant is being invaded by which pest, there should be a natural remedy to help you restore your garden to its original beauty! - 1432

Build A Durable Storage Shed That Will Last For Years

By Julian King

The tips here are to give you a few ideas on some time saving and cost saving proficiencies, to assist you in establishing your wooden shed. The points in many cases will also immediately or indirectly reference safety factors.

Naturally you are going to start with the prep of the area where the outdoor shed is going to be set up. You need to decide what materials you are going to use for your base. Remember the most harm caused to wood is by erosion, which is caused by water and dampness. Concrete, therefore, is one of the most favorite alternatives for a shed foundation. If your outdoor shed is going to be in a low lying domain susceptible to water run off maybe, then you must be sure and consider this. There is wood particularly rated for ground use that is pressure treated. be very sure to buy this if you settle not to use concrete. Now, think about this for a second. If the shed begins to sink then eventually the structure could become hazardous.
The cost saver tip is you are saving yourself money in the long run due to the fact that done right you wont have to substitute it for three or four years.

With so much talking about fungus and mold being found in aging outdoor sheds recently, many of us have grew more aware of the problems it can create. Much of this can be avoided with appropriate air circulation. If you are using wood as your base be sure it is at 6 off the ground. Once again it helps to prevent the wood from decomposition, and allows for air circulation. There is another thing you could do is keep at least 3 around your building clear and open from bushes and trees. This way it permits the wind and sun to keep it dry, or dry it after a storm. You will notice a great difference because you should never detect a musty stale odor within the outdoor shed

The floor is absolutely one important place you do not want to save. Decomposition and warping here can be risky. One good tip is to ensure pressure treated lumber or concrete. It might even be worth investing a few more dollars and using tongue and groove plywood. This is what is usually recommended if your outdoor storage shed is going to stock large items such as rides or a lawn mower. Even if you dont have one now, plan for the future. Especially if you know you wont be selling your household anytime soon.

Some fields that you can save on cost are in areas like your trim. Here you can use materials such as PVC trim boards. They are a bit less expensive but theres some solid benefits to them when it comes to maintenance. You will not have to be troubled about warping, splitting or decay and the big bonus is it never needs painting.

These are simply a few of the many points that you will learn if you search facts on making your outdoor shed. Naturally safety is the first factor, and if there are any savings on cost, they are just bonuses.. - 1432

Should You Use a Trimmer or Edger on Your Lawn?

By Keith Markensen

While a lawnmower is essential to caring for your lawn, a trimmer or edger is also important. The reason for this is that many lawnmowers cannot reach areas of your grass next to walls, patios, or trees. To make your lawn look neat and tidy, use an edger to finish the job.

It can be hard to choose a type of trimmer or edger. Edgers have a traditional design with dual blades and a long wooden handle. Although they work quite well for the job, they have an old-fashioned design. They require no gas, and are lightweight. You'll need to keep the blades clean and sharp, but they can do your edging in just a few minutes.

On the downside, they require a lot of effort for you to push them along. If you'll end up with an aching back or sore wrists, this type of edger may not be right for you. If this is the case, try upgrading to an electric trimmer.

Electric trimmers are actually quite inexpensive. Plus, they are easy to use. They remove the longer grass by slicing it off by a quickly-moving plastic string. The string is easy to replace and costs only a few dollars. It will last at least several weeks, if not months, depending on how much you use the trimmer.

Electric trimmers have several other features that manual edgers do not have. You can use them at different angles and in tight areas that even manual edgers cannot reach. For example, if you have grass growing next to a shed or other building, it can be difficult to use your manual edger to cut this grass, but an electric trimmer will work. The same goes for grass around a large rock, or a lawn bordered by a scalloped edge. Electric trimmers will not damage the bricks, and will easily remove the grass.

A third style of edger to consider uses a small gasoline-powered motor. Unlike an electric edger, there is no cord in the pathways to get in the way, so you can take them far into the yard even to the areas near your brick patio, where there's no outlet nearby. Using a gasoline-powered edger eliminates the need for a long extension cord snaking through your yard. Plus, they typically have more power, so they can handle thick brush or weeds better than electric edgers. However, gas-powered trimmers are noisier and heavier than electric models, and many of them are more expensive than either the electric or manual trimmers.

As you can see, there are many choices in lawn edgers and trimmers. The model you choose should depend on your preferences as well as your budget. A manual model is well-suited to a small yard without a lot of obstacles, while an electric trimmer is a good choice for medium-sized yards. Gasoline trimmers are a good choice for larger yards with obstacles to cut around. Because edgers are an investment, be sure to choose wisely, and pick a high-quality model that will last for years. - 1432

How To Choose The Right Pot When Transferring Your Houseplants

By Thomas Fryd

Choosing the right pot for your plant is one of the most important considerations an indoor gardener must make.

When you buy a plant from the store, it already comes in container, this makes it feel as though the pot was chosen for you. But, you need to decide whether or not your plant will thrive and grow in that pot. You also need to think about the situation, when it comes time to transfer the plant into another pot. Your decision is influenced by whatever container you choose from the beginning.

Aside from issues like color and material, the size of a pot is the most important thing to think about. Size plays an important role, but is also a chief concern when repotting a plant.

A lot of houseplants require repotting at least once a year. This of course will depend upon its size, species and amount of sunlight and many other factors.

A large pot, for example encourages free root growth, and usually provides substantial soil nutrients for them to draw on. Thus, starting with a larger pot will allow the plant to grow faster, leading to quicker repotting. But it can lead to excess water retention, so don't go overboard.

With a smaller pot, it provides less soil to supply nutrients, but can lead to higher concentration levels. There is less growing room with a smaller pot, because it restrains the roots and the plant will grow more slowly. These two things often offset each other, leading time to repot about the same. It is important to remember not to allow the plant to become root bound, this can lead to damage.

When transferring a plant to another pot is necessary, the size of the pot will need to be an inch or to large in diameter for the plant to remain healthy.

How you deal with water draining is another very important consideration. Professional sources estimate that as many as 90% of houseplants are given excessive water. This can oftentimes lead to premature death of a plant. Diseases are another likely condition that can be the result over excessive watering. Most harmful organisms like mold and fungi, need warmth and moisture to thrive and multiply.

Herbs can also be easy to over water. They evolved in poor growing conditions, and had extreme sun exposure. Herbs flourish and thrive in an environment that would stress and possibly kill most other kinds of plants. Bonsai plants, enjoy a moist potting soil or hyponex potting soil, but still need plenty of draining room to ensure that they do not sit in water for extended periods of time.

A pot with plenty of holes in the bottom, is ideal. Keep the holes to a medium size in order to prevent dirt from spilling out or you could even cover the holes with mesh. Holes should not be to large or to small, since they may become plugged up. To test the size, place a pan of water under the plant and fill it about one third full of water. Repeat this exercise until water is no longer absorbed into the soil above it. - 1432

The Lovely Braided Money Tree

If you keep the Money Tree plant outside on the porch, you need to remember to bring it inside when the temperatures drop below 50 degrees.

It is unnecessary to give the tree fertilizer, specifically in the bonsai plant size and style. Trimming the dead leaves and providing plenty of fresh air, will allow your Braided Money Tree to live for many years. - 1432

Would You Like To Take Flower Pictures Like the Pros?

By Ben Johnson

When taking photos of flowers, you want them to look their best. And since you like sunny days it is easy to get the idea that those sunny days also provide the best conditions for making pictures of your flowers and garden.

But wait! That bright sunlight is actually not the best for showing your flowers at their very best. Rather, try a slightly overcast day. The softer light on such a day is easier to handle.

There are several more ways to make your flower photos stand out. Here are some methods that professional photographers use to make their pictures look good:

Get rid of a distracting background by shading it - take a piece of cardboard or some similar stuff and hold it so it casts a shadow on that background you prefer to see less of.

Maybe you need more light on your favorite flower? Then borrow the bathroom mirror and use that to reflect the light to where you want it. Favorite trick of the professionals.

Another thing you can do if you do not want to wait for the clouds is to make your own. Use a sheet of semi-opaque plastic, or a piece of white cloth. Secure this to a coat hanger made of wire. (The hanger should be formed into the shape of a square to make it serve better as support.) Then take this object and place it above the flower so that it provides some shade from the sunlight.

Using the sun as a back lightning for flower photos can prove to be quite interesting. In order to get the best effect, you can try placing the sun right behind the flower. This is not an easy task, but once you get the hang of it, then you can use it to your advantage. Some types of flowers will look semi-transparent when lit from behind.

Avoid taking photos of flowers in the middle of the day. That is when the sunlight is the most unforgiving. Instead, try to take photos early in the morning or right before the sun goes down.

Most of us have a camera with a zoom lens. Using this feature allows you to more easily find a shooting angle that will fit the subject of your photo. You can often fix a distracting background by zooming in - this will make the background area smaller and easier to manage.

Just because you may not be a professional photographer, doesn't mean that you can't capture your subject the way they do it. It will take practice and patience to get the photos to look their very best, but since you can take a lot of pictures with a digital camera at no extra cost you will be able to experiment until you get everything right. - 1432

Indoor Plants And Its Outdoor Environments

By Keith Markensen

When growing houseplants, you may be surprised to learn that the outside environment does affect your indoor plants. If you are trying to maintain a healthy indoor garden, one of the main barriers to your plants' health is pollution. In cities, and even in suburbs, dust, grime, and exhaust make it hard even for indoor plants to thrive.

Because plants 'breathe" through their leaves, allowing their leaves to become covered with dust and dirt is not only unattractive, but also harmful to the plants. Therefore, you should pay special attention to cleaning the foliage of your plants, making sure that they are kept clean and free from dirt and dust.

If your plants have shiny smooth leaves, the easiest way to clean the leaves is to give them a sponge-bath with slightly warmed water and a very small amount of soap. Then, rinse with clean water, making sure that no soapy residue is left on the leaves. This will remove any dust or dirt, as well as any pests which may have found their way onto your houseplants.

If your plants have hairy leaves, such as African Violets, keep them clean by occasionally brushing the leaves with a fine soft brush. However, be gentle, so that you do not harm the leaves with rough treatment.

During the summer, you can give your plants special care by returning them to nature for the season. If you have a garden, or even a porch or patio, your houseplants can spend two or three months outside each year. However, keep in mind that you should try to replicate their indoor conditions when you leave your plants in the garden, as they have acclimated to being indoors, just like an aralia plant. Try to replicate the amount of light your plants were receiving indoors, keeping plants in shady or sunny spots as needed. Aralias usually get wilted stems when exposed to too much light outdoors. A nursery can also help you determine which of your plants prefer sunny or shady environments.

While you could take the plants out of their pots and plant them directly in the garden, it is probably better to sink the pots into the soil, leaving the plant in the pot. This will keep your plants from the shock of transferring them to completely new and different soil. Also, the pot will keep the roots from spreading, which would make it difficult to re-pot them at the end of the summer. You may wish to drop some gravel into the hole first, to ensure adequate drainage.

While your plants are spending time in the garden, you should not forget about them. Even with rainfall, make sure that they are adequately watered. Make sure to examine them occasionally to make sure that they are not being attacked by pests. When you bring them back inside at the end of the summer, make sure no pests get a free ride into your house, where they can attack your other houseplants. - 1432

Make Your Flower Pictures Look Fantastic

By Jeff Johnson

When making pictures of a flower garden, learn some tricks from the professionals. This article shows you some simple things you can do to enhance the quality of your flower photos a great deal.

Having bright sunlight when you are taking photos of your garden and flowers is usually not the best choice, although you may enjoy the garden most on such days.

Initially, if you are looking at a garden, you may not pay attention to things like that. Since your eyes are used to accommodating different levels of light, it may be difficult for you to realize that lots of bright sunlight can actually diminish the look of a photo.

Overcast days may be less pleasing for you, but they do produce a type of light which tends to give pleasing results for your flower photographs. Therefore, try shooting flowers on such days, and notice the result.

There are some other techniques you can use to make your photos look like the ones made by professional photographers. They are easy to implement, and you can use simple household items.

For instance, you can learn how to make your own clouds. This only takes a white garbage bag (unused) or a white t-shirt. Along with that, you will also need a hanger that can be shaped into a square. Attach the hanger to the t-shirt or the garbage bag, then hold the contraption above the subject to shade it from the direct sunlight.

Another thing that you can do is to get up very early in the morning and make pictures at dawn. Notice the special quality of that light! Or make photos near sunset; the light is very interesting then also.

Finally, if you don't have enough light on the subject, like in case of a flower in a very shady spot, you can use a mirror or a piece of aluminum foil. Hold it so that it reflects extra light on the subject, to make it stand out better. This will help focus the attention on the flower that you are trying to capture. - 1432

How To Propagate Houseplant

By Kent Higgins

Leaf cuttings are a very popular method of plant propagation, and they can be made in several ways. Many house plants, including African Violets and Gloxinia, are propagated by cutting a leaf where it joins the stem, and planting this leaf in the starting soil mixture. Within just a few weeks, roots will start to grow at the point of the cut. Then, the new plant should be transplanted into a regular potting soil mixture.

With other plants, such as Sansevieria, with long pointed foliage, you should cut the leaves into four inch sections, and set these sections right end up in a starting soil mixture. From the lower cut, roots will soon form.

Rex Begonia, another popular houseplant, is propagated using still another way of leaf cuttings. With a razor, make cuts across the heavy veins on the leaf's underside. Then place the leaf face up on the starting mixture. Use toothpicks or pins to make sure it contacts the soil, and new plants will soon form at the cut marks.

Growing your very own plants through leaf cuttings and other propagation methods is very rewarding. You can grow your own indoor garden for the price of just a little work, and reap tremendous rewards. You can grow many new plants from the leaves of your old plants. Plus, many people have found gardening to be a relaxing activity, a reward in and of itself.

When you are making leaf cuttings to increase your indoor garden, the plants from which you are cutting leaves are also benefiting from the trim. In order to keep your plants beautiful and healthy, you should pinch, prune, and cut back the plants when appropriate. Particularly in low light conditions, as found in many homes, plants tend to grow tall and leggy, with little foliage at the bottom of the plant. To make your plants full and even from the base to the top, you'll need to cut them back to encourage growth in the right directions. Trim back any shoots that do not fit with the overall shape of the plant.

Particularly if you are a new gardener, the idea of cutting off healthy branches, leaves, and even flowers and how to care for your plants will make you nervous. However, these measures must be taken if you want the overall plant to be healthy and proportionate. Pinch off shoots that are not growing in the correct place, allowing your plant to spend its energy growing in the right directions. Even if this shoot has buds or flowers, it should be removed. By pruning your plant, you can reasonably control its growth. Although some plants will grow properly without help, like the African violet they requires exactly the right amount of sun, light, and water, among several other conditions. The vast majority of your houseplants would greatly benefit from pruning and cutting back, and you can use the leaves you've cut to grow new plants. - 1432

Getting To Know The Monarch Butterfly

By Lee Dobbins

One of the most recognizable butterflies today is the monarch butterfly. Its distinctive orange and black wings make it easy to pick out among the plants and flowers. Females tend to be a little smaller than males and have darker veins in their wings. Males usually have a black spot in the middle of their hind wings.

There are actually two types of subspecies in the Monarch butterfly family. The main difference between the two is that one subspecies, the Danaus p. plexippus, migrates and the other subspecies, the Danaus p. megalippe, does not. Migratory monarchs are generally found in North America, because of the climate changes and non-migratory monarchs are found in hot climates around the equator.

Migratory monarchs tend to start their travel during the beginning of August. Then they return home, to the North, in the springtime. Monarchs have an unusually long migration as it takes them a while to travel, sue to their size. Their migration is considered long when in comparison with their life span.

Of the many species of insects that inhabit the planet the Monarch is one of a few that can actually survive a transatlantic crossing. If the wind conditions are right Monarchs can make it to Great Britain and monarchs have also been found in Hawaii and New Zealand.

Monarch butterflies are actually poisonous to many animals. They store poison found in milkweed plants. When they are caterpillars they eat the milkweed plant and after they turn into a butterfly they still store this poison. The bright orange of their wings is a danger sign, warning any predator that they will get very ill or even die from eating the monarch butterfly. Other butterflies like the Viceroy have evolved to resemble the Monarch has a survival tactic.

If you want to attract Monarchs to your garden you will need to have nectar bearing plants and host plants available. Milkweed plants are favored by the monarch to lay their eggs as well as a food source for the caterpillars when they are born. Monarchs at one point were becoming endangered due to deforestation. Today there are laws in place to protect the Monarchs wintering grounds.

Monarchs actually care for their children/caterpillars until they turn into a butterfly. It takes about 9 months, or a wintering period, for the caterpillar to develop and be born. Once the child is about 13 it will get its first pair of wings and go out into the unknown world. Most monarchs tend to form their own cocoon away from their parents.

The following birds have built up a tolerance to the poison in Monarch butterflies. Robins, Pinyon Jays, Cardinals, Brown Thrushes, Sparrows, Scrub Jays, and Grackles all like to eat monarchs. Asian ladybug species will eat the monarch eggs and larvae. - 1432

Butterfly gardens are a popular way to attract butterflies to your yard. You can also grow and tend to your own monarch caterpillars. Once they have turned into a butterfly you can then release it into the wild. Milkweed plants are the Monarchs first choice for mating, and laying their eggs as the caterpillar eats the milkweed plant once it is hatched. Steps have been taken to protect monarch wintering habitats so they do not become endangered. Deforestation was a serious threat to monarchs at one point in time.

Mexican Food History: A Melding of Cultures

By KC Kudra

No doubt, about it, Mexican food is one of the most popular foods in the United States. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and quesadillas are just some of the fare that grace many an American table. Mexican recipes are spicy, colorful, and full of flavor. However, what may seem to be quintessential Mexican is not always the case. A little Mexican food history will reveal that things are not always, as they seem.

Although the Mayan culture is often credited for giving Mexican food its roots, the strongest influence came from the Spanish when they invaded Mexico in 1521. Cortez, the Spanish explorer, along with his followers, introduced many new foods into the Mexican culture. Pigs, cows and sheep as well as herbs, dairy products and various spices such as garlic had never graced a Mexican table until that time.

Although Cortez brought new foods to Mexico, Mexico also showed him a thing or two. He encountered a few new food items as well. He was introduced to peanuts, chocolate, vanilla, beans, avocados, coconuts, corn, squash, and tomatoes. It was a great effort of give and take and these foods have all worked together over then centuries to produce wonderful Mexican dishes.

Mexican food history is an interesting mixture of cultures. Many of the Mexican foods that are so-called "traditional" are actually rooted in other cultures in addition to the Mexican culture. Take quesadillas as an example. This mainstay of Mexican families is often considered to be quintessential Mexican, but in actuality, it takes its components from other cultures. The corn tortilla, the foundation for the quesadilla, is actually a Native American creation.

The cheese, pork, beef, and lettuce that grace so many of our favorite Mexican dishes, including the quesadilla, are Spanish. The hot sauce that is made from chili pepper, though, is indigenous to Mexico. However, it is a little known Mexican food history fact that many of the spices thought to be Mexican are actually Spanish in origin. Black pepper, cinnamon, coriander and oregano are several spices that are often used in Mexican cooking but are not native to the country.

Other cultural influences left their mark on Mexican food. The French dabbled in Mexican occupation briefly in the 1860's. This resulted in such popular dishes as chili en nogado, which is a dish of stuffed chilies in a walnut sauce. Such French inspired dishes with a Mexican flair have withstood the test of time and become ingrained in the Mexican culture, ultimately finding their way onto American plates.

One of the most popular adaptations of Mexican food and an integral part of Mexican food history is the influence from the Southwest United States, namely southern Texas. This style of Mexican food, dubbed "Tex-Mex" has become a favorite of people all over the world. North meets south in this cultural combination of northern Mexico and Southwestern Texas. In many restaurants today, it is more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican food that is being served.

Mexican food history is rich and varied. With so many interesting cultural influences throughout time, it seems that Mexico has been more of a culinary melting pot. What have resulted, however, are delicious foods, rich in flavor that has soared in popularity. It does not seem to be slowing anytime soon. - 1432

How To Choose Proper Pots And Container To Your Indoor Plants

By Keith Markensen

Indoor plants in interesting pots can be a beautiful addition to your home. Many people buy plants, only to leave them in their original nursery containers! These plastic containers are not only ugly, but they also make it hard for your plants to thrive. Most houseplants need special plants to allow their roots room to grow. When you are searching for new pots for your houseplants, there are several types of materials that you can consider.

Terra cotta pots are very popular for indoor plants. These plants have a warm, orange-tan color when unpainted. These porous clay pots usually come with one hole at the bottom with drainage. For most plants, you should also purchase a terra cotta saucer to catch drainage water. You can also find unique terra cotta plants which are glazed, or paint your own.

Another popular choice for re-potting houseplants is a ceramic pot. These are very attractive, and they come in a variety of colors and styles to fit your dcor. Ceramic pots come glazed, and are made in a variety of sizes. Make sure to notice whether there are drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Some ceramic pots do not come with drainage holes, so you'll have to choose suitable plants for these pots.

Resin pots are a good choice if you are concerned about terra cotta or ceramic pots breaking. Resin is a type of plastic, and it comes molded into pots with a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. There are resin pots available to fit any style. Most come with pre-drilled drainage holes, but if not, you can drill your own. If your pot does have drainage holes, of course, you'll need to select an appropriate tray to catch the draining water.

Galvanized metal plant containers are a unique choice, which can lend a casual, country mood to your home. Galvanized metal containers are usually bucket or tub-shaped. Galvanized metal is a special kind of metal treated to prevent rust, making it an ideal material for many plants such as ficus benjamina. While many garden centers keep a variety of galvanized pots on hand, you may find a larger selection at a feed and tack store. Although many do not come with drainage holes, you can drill your own in the metal. If you do use it for a landscape tree or a plant which requires drainage holes, be sure to place a tray underneath it to catch drainage water.

When choosing an indoor plant pot, no matter what material you select you will be able to find a style and color to fit your dcor. All of these types of plant containers are made in a variety of sizes, so you will be able to find one that is suitable for your space. You should purchase your plants at the same time you choose pots, so that you can match plants to appropriate pots. Plus, you will have more reason to transplant your new plants into their new pots right away. - 1432

The Antique Heirloom Plants

By Kent Higgins

Many people are familiar with antique furniture, but did you know that there are also antique plants? These plant species have survived for generations, and they are called heirloom plants. There is a wide variety when it comes to heirloom plant species, but the most popular of these is an orchid. Although many people, especially beginning gardeners, fear that they would kill an orchid plant and never dream of owning one, many varieties of orchids are actually easy to care for.

One popular heirloom orchid, the Paphiopedilum orchid, is a very low maintenance plant. These orchids have been popular for generations due to their big, bold flowers. These colorful flowers make a wonderful accessory in your home, brightening the whole room. Another type of heirloom orchid that you may want to consider is the Cattleya orchid. These orchids grow stalks with clusters of small blossoms. They come in colors ranging from yellow and pink to simple white orchids. These are very striking plants, even in less bold colors.

Once you have selected an orchid, you'll need orchid potting mix, a clay pot, a tray, and some small pebbles. When you purchase your orchid, it will probably come in a small plastic pot, or with bare roots. To re-pot your orchid, fill your clay pot with the orchid potting mix, and then simply plant your orchid into the mix. Use the tray filled with small stones underneath your pot, to help catch the draining water.

To water your orchid, place it under room temperature running water for around two minutes. Because sitting in water is one of the easiest ways to kill an orchid, make sure that the potting mix has time to drain thoroughly. Now, place the pot on the tray, and then place your orchid in an area of your home that does not receive direct sunlight. Once per week, check your orchid. If the orchid potting mix is dry, you should water your orchid again by placing it under running water.

If you do not want to grow or to care for orchids, there are many other heirloom plants to choose from, including flower bulbs. These plants are very hardy, and can endure years of neglect. One of the most popular heirloom bulbs is the daffodil. There is a surprising variety of daffodils available, from the smaller true daffodils to the larger narcissus. Many have wonderful scents, or unique petal shapes that can turn down even the most expensive orchids such as Vanda or the moth orchid. Hyacinth flowers are known for their beautiful colors and strong fragrance.

Once you have purchased your flower bulbs, you'll need to plant them. You'll need a container, some potting soil, and a cold spot to store your bulbs during the winter months. Fill your container with potting soil, and plant your bulbs with the narrow end facing up. Keep your container in a cold area for the winter, and then bring your bulbs inside during the early spring, placing them in a sunny window. Water it regularly, and your bulbs will soon sprout. After they bloom, you can plant your bulbs out in the garden. Otherwise, you can also discard the bulbs after they are done blooming, and buy new ones next year. - 1432

Building A Shed During The Holidays With Your Family

By Larry Miller

In todays modern living it is getting tougher and trickier to set family values and find the proper means to promote family bonding. With a little bit of thought ,and maybe some encouragement with the teens, a perfect way to do this is through a family project. If you have plans to build a outdoor storage shed consider making this a family event.

You will need to develop a certain mind set and thats to be patient. Depending on the number of family members that will be participating there will be some levels of frustration. The gains of finishing this outdoor shed will far outweigh the rifts and arguments that may occur on the way. Another element will be how much experience is going to be present. If you are a novice at construction, then this is going to be a learning experience for you as well as the kids, and dont forget the wife.

To begin with start it as a family project right from the beginning. Dont run out and purchase the plans and materials, and surprise the kids on Saturday morning as to whats happening. Start off with a home discussion. You will want to decide on whether you are going to build a prefab outdoor storage shed, or start from scratch.

Next is a trip to the local home renovation store. Here you will either be choosing your kit or your outdoor shed pattern. Of course you will have established the joint family decision as to where it be erected, and how big it should be. You will all want to agree the style. Here is where you get the kids to think ahead and make this somewhat informative. Let them decide what would be the best value for the money you are going to spend.

If you are building from scratch then assign a family member to inspect the plans for the outdoor shed and make a list of the supplies that will be necessary. Now that you are assigning some responsibility it should create more exuberance. The next plan is to go out and buy the items.

When construction day comes make sure all family member is appointed to some work. Be sure they feel comfortable with it and that it has some importance. It doesnt matter what age group you are overseeing, some new thinking on your part will do the magic. Remember the safety factors and be sure everbody has a good knowledge of them. Hold any of the work with tools strictly for yourself, unless you have some liable teens that have some knowledge of woodworking tools.

Once your outdoor storage shed is finished construction, dont stop there. Get everybody who has worked on the project ,to help put all of the items that are going to be stored in there. At this point everyone should be feeling a sense of achievement ,and taking pride in the part each of them had. Everyone will most gladly agree that yes, some family bonding really did take place. - 1432

5 Approaches To Smarter Woodworking Projects and Patterns

By Jonas Clarkson

Often people will jump into a hobby before they even acknowledge if its for them. So to start with, the first consideration you want to know before taking on a woodwork project is, that its going to fit your interests. The argument to this is, you won't know if you'll enjoy it before you have even tried it, and thats a fair argument.

Resolve first of all that you are going to start with something modest. Perhaps a birdhouse or a planter or even a easy cosmetic shelf. Nothing too elaborate though. It may even be a good idea to commence with a kit. This way you wont have to invest in a lot of tools while you are in this testing stage. Once you have accomplished your test project and learned that you truly did love it, then you are ready to move onto bigger and better affairs, slowly though.

Now is the time to really start reading about what working with wood is all about. Its time to cultivate yourself and do some research. You want to accomplish at least the basic principles if you want to move forward. Plan on investing in some magazines and books. Try to buy magazines geared towards beginners at first, and observe for the ones that offer free designs in them as well.

The next item on your list for things to know is, what instruments are you going to require. Dont run out and buy state of the art, or top of the line instruments. These are not needed. If you have been studying your magazines, then by now you should have a sound idea what you are going to require. They no doubt gave you some sound pointers on how to select your tools. Every woodwork project will have some tool essentials, but most of these projects will commonly comply to the average wood working tools.

Before you even begin to think about starting a tricky woodworking project, read any data that came with your tools. It is wise that first and foremost you become educated and adhere to all of the safety rules and guidelines. Some very serious accidents can take place with the types of tools you will be using.

Now you are ready to start your project. Be sure that you have purchased a pattern, and preferably a easy one. If you leap into something too elaborated it could get expensive, and you could become demoralized at it not turning out exactly as good as what it could be.

Woodworking projects require the same practice as anything else that you have became skilled in. You will gradually get better the more you do. Try and take some time to maybe take a few classes. Check out your local improvement stores and see if they offer workshops. Just make sure they are relevant to the kind of woodwork that you are doing.

If you follow these simple guidelines, and keep studying and researching, before you know it you will be able to class yourself as a veteran woods craftsperson. - 1432

Garden Decoration is Easy With Water Features

By Chris Chandler

A great way to liven up your garden is to add a water feature to your garden decor. Flowing water can be both soothing and really nice to look at. In fact, I've found that there's nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench next to my fountain while I read a good book. Installing a water fountain is a fairly easy task and fairly inexpensive. You will find your backyard transformed.

Usually, people install outdoor water fountains for the benefit of the natural ambience they provide. For some reason, being around a gorgeous scene of water can give you a positive outlook on life. The constant drone of the water is exactly what most people need to concentrate on what they are doing. Even if you're not into that kind of stuff, just being in a garden with a fountain has a sort of meditative quality to it, even if you're not trying to do so. I recommend it to anyone.

When you first decide to put in a fountain, you need to put great care into picking out one that will go well with the rest of your backyard. If you have any other decorations, you want to consider if it goes well with your garden's theme. Does the fountain you're considering stand out in your garden like a sore thumb, or does it look like it was always meant to be there?

If you're like me, you can't naturally tell whether the garden fountain will be a good addition to your yard just by looking at it. So my solution was to bring my sister (a natural at fashion design and that kind of stuff) along with a picture of my garden to the store. I was able to get her expert opinion, as well as see for myself what it would look like. By doing this I was able to pick a beautiful rock fountain that goes marvelously with the rest of my garden.

Getting power to my electric water fountain was my biggest problem. I really did not want a big unsightly extension cord running across my yard. So I found an extension cord meant for being buried! That was just the ticket. It did take a while to dig the trench across the lawn. I pretty much parted the soil and pushed the cord a few inches below the soil. My wife was happy that our new water garden decoration was then able to flow beautifully. It was, and still is, a sight to behold!

Having a fountain in your garden is not only soothing, but it also adds a lot of character to an otherwise bland garden. Remember, gardens are not just for giving us vegetables! A garden is a place to go when you want to retreat from the outside world and dwell in your own thoughts with no disturbance. - 1432

Peace Lily Plant

Garden Tips: The Planting of Seeds and Fighting Enemies

By Gugu Martini

If you save seed from your own plants you are able to choose carefully. Suppose you are saving seed of aster plants. What blossoms shall you decide upon? Now it is not the blossom only which you must consider, but the entire plant. Why? Because a weak straggly plant may produce one fine blossom. Looking at that one blossom so really beautiful you think of the numberless equally lovely plants you are going to have from the seeds. But just as likely as not the seeds will produce plants like the parent plant.

A little plant must depend for its early growth on the nourishment stored up in the two halves of the bean seed. For this purpose the food is stored. Beans are not full of food and goodness for you and me to eat, but for the little baby bean plant to feed upon. And so if we choose a large seed, we have chosen a greater amount of food for the plantlet. This little plantlet feeds upon this stored food until its roots are prepared to do their work. So if the seed is small and thin, the first food supply insufficient, there is a possibility of losing the little plant.

You may care to know the name of this pantry of food. It is called a cotyledon if there is but one portion, cotyledons if two. Thus we are aided in the classification of plants. A few plants that bear cones like the pines have several cotyledons. But most plants have either one or two cotyledons.

Small seeds that germinate at fifty per cent may be used, but this is too low of a per cent for the large seed. So suppose we test beans. The percentage is seventy. If low-vitality seeds were planted, we could not be absolutely certain of the seventy per cent coming up. But if the seeds are lettuce go ahead with the planting.

Fighting Plant Enemies

The devices and implements used for fighting plant enemies are of two sorts: (1) those used to afford mechanical protection to the plants; (2) those used to apply insecticides and fungicides.

Simpler devices for protecting newly-set plants, such as tomatoes or cabbage, from the cut-worm, are stiff, tin, cardboard or tar paper collars, which are made several inches high and large enough to be put around the stem and penetrate an inch or so into the soil.

Another class of garden implements are those used in pruning but where this is attended to properly from the start, a good sharp jack-knife and a pair of pruning shears will easily handle all the work of the kind necessary. - 1432

The Ideal Method To Choose a Shed Plan For Your Home

By Mike Mitchell

A shed is a small storage cabin that is broadly speaking made in the garden for stashing away shovels, lawnmowers and other horticulture tools. This cabin can be made very irresistible and organized so that it seems like a part of the house that you are staying in. Furthermore the shed should be constructed in such a way so as to serve the function well. There are some basic elements that are to be kept in mind before buying the shed plan.

First and foremost, the thing that is to be given importance is the flooring. The measuring of the floor gives an idea about how extended or extended the shed shall be. It oftentimes happens that while making the shed people plan to have a massive shed on paper but when it comes to reality, they soon start cramming things in the shed. Hence it is mandatory that before making the shed plan one should bring out all the things that they require to store, to get an idea of how much space they might consume.

The next part is to project how the shed might look. There are some communities that observe strict rules regarding the look of a shed. They stress on the size of the shed compared to the size of your home, the direction that the doors should face, etc. It is necessary to visit the local government offices to get an idea of the rules to be traced and then plan the shed consequently.

Then the next thing that is to be taken into considerateness is getting the right material to build the shed. Wood is the most favored amongst the materials that is used to make a shed. A wooden shed does not call for any intricate tools to be made. The base can also be made of wood like treated lumber ply wood. Since wood easily gets affected by water, there should be at least six inches of distance between the wood and the soil. The wood should be processed not to rot. Also, do remember that it is advisable to keep about sixteen inches over hangs from the roof and proper gutters and spouts to prevent the rotting of the wooden walls due to the water that falls from the roof.

Next noteworthy thing is the door of the shed. It is advisable not to make a swinging door for the shed. This is very awkward and very problematic for windy days. It is better to buy a six foot overhanging door. These types of doors are cost-effective and practicable.

The size of the shed should not be such that it takes up all the space of your garden. So it is essential that the size of the garden to be kept in mind before buying the shed plan. The sizes usually depend on the kind of goods that are to be stashed away in that shed.

The price is also a very key element to be taken into consideration. If it is for long term gains and the varieties of the home and garden, then paying more for a better quality shed is fine. Otherwise it is best to produce something that will serve the purpose for the time and get it modified later.

Last but not the least; if you are a bit enthusiastic, you can build an outdoor shed on your own instead of expending lot of money for engaging individuals to construct it for you. Some standard skills are to be followed while constructing the shed. Some good materials and tools and a detailed planning are all the things that are necessary to make the shed. There are numerous kits that are accessible online and also the step by step guide on how to make a shed. One such site for shed plans and blueprints is MyShedPlans. These are of solid help if you want to preserve some money and construct a shed yourself. - 1432

Learn about the different types of range hoods

By Zoe Sharon

Any kitchen, be it a domestic or a commercial one, all have one thing in common: range hoods. Range hoods are placed above a stove in order to properly ventilate any unnecessary fumes or odors that might be produced during the course of cooking. In turn, this keeps any odors from leaking out into the rest of the building or house, thereby ensuring that all fumes are properly circulated and ventilated.

It is because of these reasons, that range hoods have become a vital component of any well-designed kitchen. Having a range hood in the kitchen gives the individuals who are cooking, a certain level of comfort needed in order to cook for long periods of time.

In the market today, there is an extremely wide variety of range hoods, all of which are built to cater to different needs, specifications and requirements. Some range hoods are made of special non-stick materials, which make relatively easy to clean, whereas others are designed to be stored away when not in use. In addition, you will also be able to find different range hoods that have been designed to suit specific designs and layouts of kitchen, making it relatively easy to find a range hood that will suit your needs.

Once you begin to look around for a range hood that will fit in your kitchen, it will come to your discovery that there are two different types of range hoods. Most range hoods are separated into two main categories: ducted range hoods, and ductless range hoods. It is imperative that you know the difference between these two, as it will help you make a well informed decision, on the type of range hood to buy or install.

For ducted hoods, you will need to have a connecting exhaust duct to blow the fumes from the kitchen, out into an open space that is normally outside the house. With ducted range hoods, you get very efficient venting of unnecessary fumes, but depending on the overall layout of your kitchen, might be very troublesome to install.

However, for ductless range hoods, you will find that these range hoods are extremely easy to install, as they do not need to be connected to an external ventilation duct. The only requirement for these range hoods to operate is an electrical socket that powers the ventilation fans. These ventilation fans help to blow the air back into a certain area of the room, thereby isolating all the intended kitchen fumes.

Despite the ducted range hood having a much higher level of effectiveness, you will find that most common domestic kitchens use a ductless range hood. This is simply because there is not enough space in domestic kitchens, for the luxury of being able to install a ventilation duct for the ducted range hood.

Now that you have understood the key differences between a ducted and a ductless range hood, you should weigh the differences and consider your own personal requirements. After which, you should be able to make a good decision regarding your range hood. - 1432

It does not matter if you are trying to impress someone with your skill or knowledge concern houseplants, some people go to great lengths studying as much information as possible to know all about a particular plant.

Growing Plants in Times of Drought

By Keith Markensen

Watering your garden can be tricky enough when it is raining plenty. You may take it for granted while it's there, but once it's gone, you will truly realize its importance in keeping your garden healthy. Especially in times of drought, it's necessary to consider how you water your garden, conserving water but still keeping your plants healthy. Here are a few things you can do to make the best use of the water you use on your plants:

Use plenty of mulch around your plants. Mulch will keep water from evaporating out of the soil. Organic much like grass clippings or wood chips can also help add organic matter to the soil. However, plastic mulches also work for limiting evaporation. You can lay plastic mulching between rows in your vegetable garden. However, keep in mind that this will also limit the water that reaches the soil underneath.

Use the water where it will do the most good. Plants need water in their roots. Sprinklers do not do the best job of this, because too much water lands on the leaves, evaporating before it ever reaches the grant. Instead, you should slowly and gently water at the base of the plants. This will be most efficient because it allows the water to soak into the soil.

If your water is limited, water the plants that need it most. In drought conditions, you should use the water on newly planted trees, shrubs, and flowers. Their limited root systems will suffer from the lack of water. Well-established plants, especially if you have chosen those that are native to the area and therefore used to less water, will be more likely to survive droughts with little damage.

Also consider when you are watering. You should water your plants in the early morning, before it has become hot. This will limit the amount of water that evaporates, because it will have soaked into the soil before the heat of the day. It will also supply plants with enough moisture to make it through the sunniest part of the day.

One way to water many plants efficiently is to install a drip or trickle irrigation systems. Many of these are inexpensive and easy to install. They provide small amounts of water at the base of individual plants. Unlike sprinklers, drip irrigation systems deliver the water right where it is needed.

To conserve water, consider collecting water from your downspouts during rains. You can actually collect a significant amount of waters this way. Plants, such as dracaena fragrans, that have low water can also help. During dry spells, use this to water your plants, limiting your use of tap water in the garden.

Even in times of drought, there are steps you can take to use your water wisely and still keep your plants healthy! - 1432

Many gardeners have difficulty deciding how often their plants should be watered. The amount of water plants need varies greatly and depends on the rate at which the plant absorbs water.

Plants which are actively growing require more water than those that are not currently growing. Those which have many roots filling the pot require more water to maintain their growth than ones which are smaller and not as well established.

The time of year also affects the water needs of plants. During the growing season, which usually lasts from April until October, most plants require more water than they use in the rest of the year. However, there are some exceptions, so be sure you understand your plant's growing season when you're deciding how much to water them.

You should inspect your plants daily to determine whether it is time for watering. Some plants will need watering every day, while others will only need watering every few days.

One way to tell when your plant needs watering is to feel the soil. Potted plants should be watered when the soil is moderately dry, and should be given enough water to soak through to the drainage hole. Many roots are located far down into the pot, so it is important that the water reaches all the way down to them.

It may be hard to tell when the soil is dry enough to require watering. One test is to tap the pot about halfway down with your knuckles or a wooden hammer. If this results in a light hollow sound, you should water the plant. If it results in a dull noise, the soil is wet enough. However, if the soil is not packed down, this test will not work.

When watering your plant, the water should be room temperature. You can use either rain water or tap water. It is actually quite easy to overwater your plants, so you should be extremely careful when watering them. If you do overwater, the tips of your plants may become yellow or brown. If this happens, stop watering the plant until the soil dries out, and poke the soil all over with a pointed sick to aerate it, helping the soil dry quickly. If the soil grows moss or algae due to overwatering, you need to remove this coating. If you want your plants to be safe for overwatering it is good to use an Automatic plant watering system.

Before you water your houseplants, you should set the pots in saucers or bowls to catch the drainage. Use glazed containers if you plan to set the plants on woodwork or other items which would be damaged by the moisture. You can also set smaller potted plants in hanging baskets or larger plants to catch the excess water.

Many plants need fertilizer in addition to the water. These especially include plants which are in their growing season, generally May to August. Bulb plants may require fertilizer at other times of the year, however. You can use liquid fertilizer, or tablets which are to be mixed with water. This should not be overlooked if you want your plants to thrive. - 1432

Improve Your Lawn With The Use Of Mulch

By Thomas Fryd

If you want to make a good impression on your friends and neighbors, then your lawn and garden may need some attention. The right landscaping materials and plants can enhance and beautify your home and increase its overall appeal.

You can turn your simple barren, bland yard into a work of art at a relatively affordable price, by doing it yourself.

Recently, in the past few years there have been many companies that have introduced a wide variety of bagged rocks and mulches. The newest line from Vigoro offers the landscaping artist over 26 varieties of products. They vary in size, color and shapes, so your possibilities are limitless.

Beautiful and decorative landscaping rock and mulch are a great way to improve your yard. Try using mulch to accent your garden, flower beds, driveway and walkway. Mulch also provides added benefits, other than being attractive they improve your soil and plants. Mulch is good at controlling and slowing erosion, maintaining proper moisture levels, and it controls weed population and soil insulation.

Here are just a few helpful tips when choosing and adding mulch to your yard or landscape:

1.) Choose a mulch that lasts a long time and is heavy, this prevents it from being easily washed away from heavy rains.

2.) Choose a mulch with looser structure to allow better soil aeration

3.) Make sure to apply mulch at the proper time, during late spring it will help preserve water and reduce ground temperature

4.) When applying mulch make sure it is 1-2 inches deep. A finer, more fluffy mulch should be applied 3-4 inches deep.

5.) Ensure mulch is applied evenly by raking through it with your hands

6.) Water the mulch after applying

7.) Make sure to move mulch a few inches away from plants and tree bottoms

To prevent grass growth and keep your plants in a healthy state, there is a mulch made by Vigoro called "Mulch with Weed Stop". This mulch is the first ever to contain a pre-emergent herbicidal agent. It controls weeds for up to 4 months, while allowing your annuals and spring bulbs, shrubbery and trees to continue growing and thriving for an ever-beautiful landscaping or garden. It is the only mulch that contains natural forest products and is certified by the Mulch and Soil Council. - 1432

Can Outdoor Environments Affect Indoor Houseplants?

Growing A Plant From Seed

By Kent Higgins

One of the joys of working with plants comes from creating your very own varieties. Your indoor garden can be made up of plants from the florist or local plant nursery, but at the same time, you are only being a care giver. When you want to start new plants from seedlings or cuttings, you are starting at the very bottom and the success of your endeavor is entirely in your hands.

There are two methods by which a gardener can increase stock; seedlings and cuttings. In the following article, we will discuss both methods in great detail. There are ways you cam really make the most out of your hobby, which results in a beautiful selection of plants. Starting a plant from a seed takes more time, dedication and devotion than simply buying a full grown plant from the store. It is more rewarding and is much cheaper than the alternative. This cost is especially greater in terms of a flowering plant versus a foliage plant.

You can find plant seeds that sell for considerably less than a single, mature plant. The seeds will also yield more plants and not just one. The time involvement is a factor that must be given serious consideration. Plants will vary in growth speed and if you are starting from scratch with a seed, you must plan your time accordingly so that you have a full grown flowering plant when you want it.

It is not that difficult to grow a plant from a seed and you can plant your home garden in a single day. But it does require a certain amount of time and care. All plants multiply by seed germination, but there are many which refuse to do so in a home garden, so it is best to take cuttings and grow from that stage. Here is some information regarding seed propagation.

There is no professional equipment needed other than a pot and some soil You want to take care not to over nutrient the soil, because this can burn the plants and any seeds you are attempting to plant in that soil. Until recently, the home gardener used a soil-sand mixture and peat moss for seed starters. This is still a very popular propagating method, but does have some drawbacks.

The main issue is surrounding the fact that it is difficult to sterilize this type of mixture. It may contain fungus, which can kill plants. In recent times however, a mixture called vermiculite has been added to sterilized soil mixtures. It makes a great growing medium for seeds. It is a sterile, mice-like mineral which replaces dirty sand. Seeds planted in this mixture, will germinate well and be disease free. - 1432

Eat Cherries - You Don't Need an Excuse

By KC Kudra

A lot of us have fond memories of eating ripe cherries as children; but cherries are also a great treat for adults. As you may have heard, cherries are a great (and delicious) way to get antioxidants. Cherries help to ward off diseases and contain a wealth of vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, potassium, magnesium, and folate. When a nutritional powerhouse like this tastes so good, it is no wonder that it is rapidly gaining in popularity.

When you are looking for ways to integrate cherries into your daily diet, you will find that this is easier than you could believe. Cherries are quite sweet fresh, but you will find that when they are dried and added to other things that they can be quite rich as well. For example, you will find that dried cherries are quite tasty when you put them into oatmeal.

Dried cherries are less sweet than maple syrup or honey and are very healthy. Dried cherries are also a wonderful addition to trail mix, their color, and vitamin content being a welcome addition to the mix.

You will also find that cherries can also bring a lot of savor and sweetness to a beef dish, and the juice from the cherries can do a lot to keep the beef from drying out. You will find that the juice from one can of sweet dark cherries can be put into a saucepan with horseradish, tomato paste, shallots and some port and then brought to a boil over medium heat for about 12 to 15 minutes.

This will thicken slightly as it cooks; once thickened, remove from heat and strain, then cover. You can also sear the cherries and add them along with the sauce. If you want to create a more dramatic presentation, you can flamb the cherries.

When you are interested in adding cherries where you might not expect it, you can start with a cherry chili. Take 3/4ths a cup of fresh, chopped cherries, either tart or sweet, depending on your taste and add them when you add the beans. You will find that the cherries will add in texture as well as taste. This is a great way to introduce chili to kids or even to friends who have a taste for the new and interesting.

In addition, when it comes to jell-o, do you need to make an excuse to add cherries? Cherry jell-o is already one of the most popular flavors. You can make all sorts of desserts with your cherry-enhanced jell-o, including jell-o cake, where jell-o and white cake are layered.

Mix fresh cherries and cherry jello with a little warm water to dissolve it then slightly chill and fold in some cool whip and make it into a light and fruity icing for a jello layer cake or why not combine the this with the suggestion above to give it a total new twist. How about adding some nice dark cherries to a nice bowl of French vanilla ice cream and all of a sudden, you have a new flavor sensation.

Cherries are a great treat; so make sure that you indulge! There are many different ways to include them into your meal, so take some time to make sure that you do! - 1432

Mint: A Welcome Guest at Your Table

By KC Kudra

Mint can surprise you; you may be in the garden and suddenly detect its sharp aroma. You may grow mint in your garden or buy it when a recipe calls for it. You may even have it growing wild in your yard. However you get mint, this is an herb, which can add an unexpected, yet welcome flavor to many dishes - and it is healthy too!

Mint does grow wild in many places; in fact, it is even considered in invasive weed by some. If you are growing it yourself, be careful where you plant it. Mint can crowd out other plants quite easily if you let it.

Mint plants do quite well in the shade and they prefer cool, moist spots, though some species do just fine in the sun. You will find that a single plant, due to the fact that they are such speedy growers, will provide you with plenty of mint for your household.

Mint leaves can be fresh or dried, and they can be used in a variety of foods from different nationalities. Fresh mint provides you with the strongest taste, try a fresh leaf, and you will find that there is a sweet, slightly cool aftertaste.

Mint can be used to add a certain amount of savor to meat dishes, and in the Middle East, mint is often used in conjunction with lamb dishes, a habit that spread to the United Kingdom, where mint sauce and mint jelly is often served with lamb dishes.

Mint is also a common herb in Thai cuisine. You may find whole mint leaves as a condiment with noodle dishes and soups. With some fresh leaves commonly placed on top of a fiery Thai soup. Mint leaves can also add a crisp note to dishes, which would otherwise be too sweet. Mint is not as common in Indian cuisine, but can add a little touch of freshness to heavier curries.

Mint is a great herb to have, whether you go out and collect it, grow it in a window box or simply buy it from the store, you will find that once you start using mint as a garnish, that you will see plenty of places that you can add it. Think seriously about the taste of mint and think about what foods can be accentuated by it!

Of course, mint can be used in desserts as well as entrees. There are many varieties of mint available at farmer's markets and produce stores; try a little fresh chopped chocolate mint in a chocolate jell-o mousse for a light and refreshing dessert. A sprig of mint is also just the thing to enliven lemon jell-o. You can use mint as a garnish as well as an ingredient in many recipes.

In addition, of course, there is nothing as refreshing on a hot day as a frosty cold glass of iced tea with a fresh mint sprig. Just a light rub of the mint leaf with your fingers will release its powerful aroma and flavor. Mint is much more versatile than you may think - try adding it to your menus today! - 1432

A Holiday Casserole Made Easy

By Jana Banks

Holiday dinners can be stressful if you have a lot of people to feed. There are so many things that need to be done and so many steps that need to be taken to make a successful meal. This is the way I came up with to make things easier on myself, see if it works for you!

The people in my family are big fans of turkey leftovers, so I decided to make a different kind of meal as a treat for them. I nickname it my Day-after-casa-roll just fun! It doesn't really have to be made with leftovers, but it works quite well either way. Over the years I've found that when it comes to family meals, a little creativity sure goes along way.

Now I just don't always want to wait for a whole turkey to finish cooking, especially if it's a day when I have so much else I need to get done. So on those days, I'll buy a pre-cooked bird or turkey breast and use it for my casserole. I admit that it's a little pricey compared to a frozen whole turkey, but for me it's worth it because of the time it saves me. I buy the pre-cooked poultry and simply use my fork to pull it from the bone and shred it. Usually I buy a 4-5 pound bird, which has plenty of meat on it for feed my family of 5.

The next step is making stuffing. The instant box kind is quick, simple, and works the best for this recipe. Make two boxes and just double all the ingredients. Once it's fluffed, set it aside. If it cools it is easier to use for the casserole step. Once cooled, place in the bottom of a glass casserole dish that has been greased. Sprinkle the cooled turkey over top of the stuffing.

The next layer is gravy. I'll use jarred or canned gravy since it's so easy and just pour it over the stuffing and turkey. Set the casserole dish in a pre-heated 350-degree oven and cook for 25 to 30 minutes. Keep an eye on it to make sure the gravy doesn't bubble over. Now the way I make this dish also requires some biscuits or buns to serve with it. So I'll place those in the oven at this point and pull them out when they're a nice golden brown. Once they've cooled off, I'll spread jellied cranberries on one side of each biscuit and mayonnaise on the other.

Now the casserole is finished, so I'll take a spatula and use it to cut the dish into smallish segments that will fit on onto the rolls or biscuits. Then I make delicious individual casserole sandwiches, serving at least 2 to each person. Without fail, my family's eyes light up when I serve this meal. It's actually one of their favorite dishes.

This dish can easily be customized to anyone's individual tastes. I often will add green beans or carrots to the casserole to get some vegetables in the meal. You can also choose to add sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes or any of your favorites to make a delicious sandwich with your own personal style. There's simply no wrong way to make your own creative casserole dish! - 1432

Adding Beautiful Steps To Your Garden

By Keith Markensen

When you're planning the landscape of your yard or garden, consider adding a set of steps. You can use anything from round-cut logs to concrete, brick, or stone to create the look you want. Each material varies in difficulty, and also in the style the stairs will add to your landscape.

When planning the size of your steps, try to make them similar to indoor steps, particularly if they are in an area where you will use them often. The tread should measure about 10 inches from front to back, and each should rise about 7 and a half inches. Make sure that the treads are a little lower in the front of the step than in the back, or rain water may collect in your steps.

If you are using anything other than round logs to make your steps, be sure they have a good foundation. It should be in the ground about 6 inches below the frost line to make the steps stable.

Although concrete may not be the most attractive material for garden steps, it is often used. To make concrete steps, first you'll need a form for pouring the concrete. These wooden boxes should be placed on top of each other, forming your stairway. Mix 1 part Portland cement, 3 parts sand, and 6 parts gravel, and then pour the cement into the form. The treads should be made level using the flat edge of a board.

Another way to make concrete steps is by using pre-formed concrete blocks. While you'll still need a foundation, it is much easier to build a stairway from concrete blocks. Make sure that you bond the blocks together well. You may also want to consider coating the stairway with a thin layer of concrete to obtain a good appearance. Brick steps are made in the same way as concrete blocks, although they do require a little more masonry skill due to the many joints.

The main difficulty of constructing stone steps is finding the stone. While you may be fortunate enough to have stones available on your property or some stones left when you had the chance to work on patio landscaping, otherwise you'll need to purchase them. This can make them an expensive choice, although they are also a very attractive and rustic way of building steps. If your stones are very large, you won't need any masonry bonding. If the steps are freestanding, you'll need to use mortar.

Wooden rounds cut from logs make beautiful steps, and they are easy to construct. Just set the bottom round into the earth. The next one should placed so that it partially covers the bottom log, leaving a riser. Fill in the ground under the upper round, and then repeat this step until your stairway is complete. This is also an excellent solution for a long slope that is slightly too steep for just a path. Logs can be set into the earth to provide occasional steps along the way. - 1432

How To Grow An Orchid

By Thomas Fryd

It's easy to grow orchids in your home. It can be a beautiful hobby, and orchids have been a symbol of love and commitment for centuries. Traditionally used in wedding bouquets and corsages, they can add an exotic touch to any room. Orchids are an especially beautiful flower, and they are relatively easy to grow. However, they do require some special care, and you should learn how to grow orchids properly before investing in one, because it does take patience.

Making a place for your new orchids

When you are first learning how to grow an orchid, buy a book on them. This will help you provide all of the requirements orchids need to thrive. Your new orchid would enjoy a home on a windowsill, with southern exposure if possible. You'll also need a humidity tray on which to place your potted orchids, because they are used to a very humid climate. You should also have a misting bottle to provide them even more moisture.

Determining Light Levels

Once you have your windowsill ready for an orchid, purchase two or three plants. Any more will crowd your windowsill and may be hard to handle. Check your orchid book to determine the necessary light levels for the types of orchids you have chosen. If yours enjoy lots of sunlight, place them several inches from the glass in your window. If your type of orchid enjoys shade, it can be grown in the shadow of your other orchid. Be careful, because direct sunlight can burn the leaves of your orchids, especially during the summer months.

Regulating conditions

To protect your orchids from light and heat, you may want to consider placing a sheer curtain over the window. Orchids also thrive with good air circulation, so consider directing a fan just above the leaves of your orchid plants. If you see pests on your plant, spot treat the leaves with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), which is ah handy household chemical.

Watering your orchids

You need to be especially careful when watering your plants, especially if you are just beginning to grow orchids. They will be better off a little too dry rather than too wet. When watering your orchid, make sure that the water runs through the pot, to get rid of any mineral deposits that have settled into the soil. The amount of water your orchid needs depends on the size of the pot, the type of soil, the specific type of orchid, and its light and heat conditions. If it is in its active growing season, it will need more water. Over-watering an orchid, however, can be quite damaging.

Growing your own orchids is a beautiful and easy hobby. Care for many orchids such as the Phalaenopsis or Moth orchid may not seem easy especially when you see them in wedding bouquets and corsages, but in fact they can be successfully grown as houseplants with the right care and attention. - 1432

Making Your Own Butterfly Houses & Feeder

By Lee Dobbins

It is possible to make your own butterfly houses and feeders from objects around your home. Butterflies prefer specific foods and you can make these available in your garden. Butterflies like sunny warm spots, but if you are in a hot climate then shady areas are preferred. You can plan your garden to include specific butterfly attracting plants and flowers.

The butterflies' favorite food is over ripe fruit. This is a great type of food as it is inexpensive and easy to provide. If you have a fruit tree and you don't pick all of the fruit then the fallen fruit will provide a perfect feeding area for butterflies. You don't have to through out any rotten fruit but instead let the butterflies enjoy, and you can enjoy their presence in your garden. Their favorite fruit is rotten, sweet and even a little moldy.

You can find objects to use as butterfly feeders from everyday household item. Dishes with slopping rims, pie plates, and plant saucers all make great butterfly fruit feeders. Find a nice shady area in your garden and hang the fruit feeder from an overhead branch. You can create your own hanger from twine or use a plant hanger. You should add rotten fruit sprinkled with water and fruit juice to keep the fruit moist.

Butterflies also love nectar and you can make your own butterfly nectar feeder using a jar, absorbent cotton, some twine and homemade nectar. Homemade nectar can be made by boiling 4 pats water to 1 part sugar and the allowing the mixture to cool. You punch holes in the jar lid, plug the holes with absorbent material, fill the jar with the nectar, put the lid on tightly and hang upside down. The absorbent material should hold the nectar without dripping.

Butterfly houses provide butterflies with shelter and protection from the climate and birds. Butterfly houses resemble birdhouses that are elongated. They have long slits in the front that provide access for the butterfly but keep the birds and other animals out. At night the butterflies will use the house for shelter, particularly as the weather gets cooler.

The inside of the butterfly house will be covered with bark and you may even place some twigs inside so the butterflies can rest. To help attract butterflies you can place a feeder next to the butterfly house. Make sure you put the butterfly house in a good spot so you can enjoy the butterflies. - 1432

Gardening tips to ensure you get the best results

By Percy J Mower

Gardening tips are easily available through the internet, gardening clubs, books, magazines and the local nursery. Some of the things to consider are how much sunlight can you expect for your plot, what type of fertilizers you should use, the mulch and the type of soil. Also the tools necessary will have to be decided including what kind of tiller you need plus the type of watering system.

If you write down what you plan to do with your garden you can save a lot of time. A second opinion from a friend sometimes helps as they will think of things you have not considered.

The garden is a success if the soil is prepared well. Using organic fertilizers for vegetables and herbs is a must, if you wish to retain the natural flavor of the food. Wood chip mulch and a good compost can be an alternative to ordinary fertilizer.

Though fresh home brew compost is a rich source of nutrients, it may not be as realistic as one imagines, for the herbal and vegetable garden. Though mulch is a good substitute to home compost, you have to be sure that they are either pine or redwood, as it breaks faster since they are softer woods. Mulch, compost or fertilizer, ensure that they are all mixed well.

when you have the soil all prepared it is very smart to lay out the plants on top of the soil before planting them to get a good look at how it's going to turn out just in case you need to make any last minute changes. I believe that the best option is to plant together all plants which have same individualities. Plants with larger spread should be planted together. Plant the taller plants at the back with shorter ones just in front.

Depending on the size of your garden watering can be hard work. An automatic watering system is a wise alternative, if you want your garden to grow on its own. Your automatic watering system can either be a huge sprinkling system to a small timer which is attached to the hose. Gardening can be an engaging and rewarding pastime which gives you pleasure, beauty and of course, food. - 1432

5 Questions You Must Ask When Buying Any Woodworking Materials

By Rafael Garcia

Where do the rip offs come in when designing a do it yourself (DIY) project like making a outdoor storage shed or a woodworking project ? Thats easy to resolve. Maybe anywhere along the route. Having said that ,doesnt mean it constantly happens or even frequently occurs.

They are a few things you can do to realize this is occurring. The very first thing is to cultivate yourself by doing your preparation. If you are asking yourself if you want, verify what it all implies. If you have access to the internet, this is the ideal location to use as your source. People often fail to use this resource for items such as shed kit, because its difficult to purchase an item this size for delivery. So they tend to head to their local home improvement store. This is a mistake. Even though you cant buy the merchandise on line you sure can learn all about it. There are many sites that will supply you will ample information on what a superb kit should consist of, and the types and quality of materials that should be used. So all you need to do is to comply their step by step instructions.

The next step is try and manage with a well established store. Stores that have shaped the habit of ripping people off will not be in business for long, and there will be signals that business is dying . Word of mouth from other customers goes a long way.Various ways that you could be cheated with is through the accessories. At first you may be led to think that the floor model you see is exactly the same as the one in the kit you just ordered.

Individuals tend to forget to ask if they are indistinguishable. Most esteemed stores will now place signs in front of their floor models explaining what the optional and add-on items are. If you dont see this then just be a little more guarded. Then theres the case where you purchase the kit and they dont tell you that its the end of the line of the specific model. If you happen to make a fault when placing it together and harm some of the material, you may not be able to exchange it. The store is unlikely to take the package back because it was your fault.

Be careful with woodworking plans that you have had fashioned by a local home improvement store. Remember this is a free service they provide in order to influence you to buy the items you will need from them. They will blueprint these plans most likely using the steepest quality materials on hand. If you have done your internet search you will have a good idea if this is happening.

You can then plainly make it obvious that you are wise, and replace the high-priced material with what is suited. This not only holds to bigger items but can also apply to your smaller woodworking projects. - 1432

How to take care of your lawn

By Andrew Caxton

This article talks about how some basic steps will ensure that you get a great looking lawn. The article also talks about the proper way to mow your lawn, and the fertilizer to be used for your lawn.

If you are one of those people for whom a great lawn matters, then there are certain things that you need to do. To begin with, do not anticipate instantaneous results. You have to be willing to put in a lot of hard work. The problem with most people is that without any hard work, they want solutions. As with everything else, this is not going to work even in the area of lawn care.

So, if you really desire a good-looking lawn, you have to make a detailed plan for your garden. See to it that you schedule a routine for your lawn. This will make it easier for you to keep in mind the things that you need to do annually for your lawn. Along with this, try and obtain quality commercial equipment for maintaining your lawn and also make use of great products available in the market to promote the health of your lawn.

Before beginning with lawn care, gauge how your lawn is faring at the present. You have to check whether the grass is bouncing with health or it is drooping, whether your lawn exhibits the presence of weeds and if it does how bad the situation is. If your grass is drooping, then you have to try and find the degree of dryness. A good idea of these and other essential factors will help in proper planning for lawn care.

After assessing the state of your lawn, you can start thinking about the steps that need to be taken. A good idea would be to begin by mowing the lawn. Do not abandon the plan if you find that the length of the grass is negligible. Giving one more mowing is always going to benefit your lawn. The fact about mowing is that people often underestimate the seriousness of mowing. Many people assume that simply running the lawnmower over the grass is what mowing is all about. This is a fallacy.

First of all, you have to ensure that the lawnmower has sharp blades. This is very important because otherwise there is a possibility that instead of cutting the blades of the grass, the lawnmower is only shredding the blades which results in the lawn having an unkempt look. While mowing the garden, a good idea would be to cover the lawn by taking as many directions as possible. This means that you should go diagonal, clockwise and counter clockwise to get that clean look for your lawn.

Apart from lawn mowing, you need to reach a proper understanding of the condition of the quality of soil in your lawn. The best idea would be to go for a soil test. With the help of a soil test, you will be able to find the levels of potassium, lime requirements, pH and phosphorus in your lawn. To find out the level of nitrogen, a soil test will not help and so you will have to find other ways to do this. Generally, compost is a great fertilizer to provide the needed nutrients to your lawn and is used in most of the front yard landscape designs exercises. - 1432

Creating the perfect contract for your lawn business

By Andrew Caxton

This article talks about how to make a good lawn contract before you start with your lawn care business. It gives useful knowledge on the do?s and don?ts of a lawn contract.

If you own a lawn care business, you will need to know how to make a contract with the house owner when they avail of your services. The reason this is so important is when some people are hesitant to pay after getting the work done. So, if you have a written contract which specifies the terms of agreement with regards to the price and other details, you will be on a safe turf.

Many owners of lawn care products manage to write contracts without any real idea of what the contract is all about. This could lead to a lot of problems especially when things go out of hand. That is why it is essential that you comprehend all the legalities of your contract.

Before finalizing the contract, peruse it with great care. This is all the more necessary if you are customizing the contract for a particular customer, as there will be minute changes for such a contract. You need to be sure that you have an understanding of the services being offered along with the prices that you are providing. In case you think certain services require more expenditure on your part, you have to mention it in your contract.

When making the contract, you need to inform the customer of all the clauses in the contract. The customer needs to know the various features that are a part of your service package along with the time-frame that you will require to complete it. Providing more information on topics like annual renewal of the contract, if any and the extra expenditure that will incur will help in building a lasting and happy relationship with the customer.

If you have a great relationship with your customer, your business will flourish and you will be happy and prosperous.

Finally, you have to look into the designing of your contract papers. The easiest way to do this would be to resort to your computer skills and do it on the net. However, if you want a very good looking contract to impress your customers with the feel of a professional set-up, then you can approach a business that specializes in contract writing. By informing them of your design preferences along with the details you want to give on your contract, you will definitely get the kind of contract that you are looking for. This will guarantee that all your problems regarding garden landscape services are solved and you will not face any hiccups with your business. - 1432

Skip Hire | My brush with a trench coat

By Candy Fishern

I used to think that getting rid of my rubbish was a boring waste of time. Yet now, I have discovered a hassle free way of doing this.

My journey began when a drunken male's journey ended. After crashing his car into my brand new garden wall, I was left with bricks all over my new landscaped driveway. I could't believe my luck, a man wearing nothing but a trench coat crashes into my wall and doesn't have any insurance to pay for it.

Thankfully he was not injured and even had the audacity to exit his vehicle and request to use my bathroom facilities! Naturally I called the police, he tried to make a run for it, but was apprehended shortly after. He faced a night in custody, whilst I was left to clean up after his destruction. His car was towed, but the remains of my front wall and various car bits remained.

After researching my options it became apparent that the best way to remove this disaster created in front of my house was to hire a skip. I needed a skip hire company fast, so repair work could get underway, and I could put this whole mess behind me.

The hiring of a skip can be a stressful task, I was already traumatised from the incident and now I had to take time of work to organise a suitable time, make sure they turn up on time, and pay the bill, hoping the trench coat man would reimburse me later. There are many forms of skips available Skip Hire UK company 5 star skip hire proved to be the most convenient and efficient way to help me.

I have found in the past that companies do not always stick to what they say they are going to do, this particular skip hire company proved to be different. The customer service team, were very through, they explained to an old woman like me, in layman's terms exactly what was going to happen and what was needed of me. They very kindly accommodated to my schedule, and I didn't even have to take time off work!

My sheer amazement at their commitment to their customers, had me conjuring up ways to try and catch them out. But I was pleasantly disappointed and the staff were very considerate and made the whole process from hiring to picking up quite enjoyable, to the extent that I felt its cost effectiveness ensured no more trips in my car to the local tip, but collate all my rubbish in future, just so I can use them again!

So if your looking for a clean and effective way to clean up your excess waste, I would strongly recommend 5 star Skip Hire. It makes the whole process much less tedious, and with the right company and people becomes a pleasant experience.

I eventually did get reimbursed by the trench coat man, not only by financial means, but we are now very much in love, and looking to move in together this fall. - 1432

The Strawberry - A Dream of a Berry

By KC Kudra

Don't you just love a fresh, juicy strawberry? There really is nothing else quite like it. With fast shipping these days, you can get strawberries almost any time now, but it just is not the same as picking that perfectly ripe berry right out of your garden.

Strawberries do not need a lot of skill to grow, and the fresh taste makes it more than worth having a few pots on your patio or a plot in your garden. Fresh strawberries are delicious on their own with a little cream and sugar, or added to other recipes.

Today's strawberries originate from a plant native to America. The large berries we see now are a hybrid of a South American strawberry that was crossed with a North American strawberry. This allowed the southern plant to survive the cooler climates in the north. Strawberries have long been a symbol of health and luxury in Europe.

Funnily enough, in Argentina strawberries were considered to be poisonous until the mid-1800s. The South American strawberry plants varied in flavor, size and shape, but the berries always had the distinctive bright red color and almost-heart-shaped berry that we have come to know and love.

While most people think of eating strawberries raw, there are other recipes you can make with them that are exquisitely delicious. A really easy recipe is to cut the berries into small pieces, then place them in a bowl. Cover the cut up berries with water and sprinkle white granulated sugar over the top generously. Add some ice, and let the whole mixture soak in the refrigerator for several hours. When you are ready to eat it, you will find a lovely cold summer dessert.
