Lawn Care Tips Help Improve Your Lawn

By Andrew Caxton

Using a few helpful lawn care tips can help you to improve the way that your lawn looks so that you can impress the neighbors with it. If you care for the outside of your home as much as the inside, then consider these tips to help you to make the most of it. When doing these things, you will see improvements. Doing things like maintaining a dense lawn allows for weeds to be nudged out. Keeping the grass the right length provides necessary health for the grass.

Water Tips

One effective lawn care tip you need is that with watering. If you use a sprinkler be sure that your lawn is watered as much as daily. You should not over do it, though, as you may be exposing the roots to too much water. Most grass types should get at least one inch of rain or watering per week, at the minimal. When grass is deeply watered, this adds to the overall quality, too. Use a tool to measure the amount of water that your yard is getting. When it is not enough, add additional watering to the yard.

Nutrients To Live

All living things need nutrients to live. With grass, this includes good air and water. One thing to consider incorporating in your lawn care methods is aeration. This allows plugs of sod to be removed so that nutrients, water and air can enter the soil at a deeper level. If the soil is hard, this is nearly a must so that air can get into the soil. Consider this lawn care tip: if you have an area that is heavily traveled on, be sure to have an aeration done on it at least one time per year. If you have a lawn that has rich soil that is rather loose rather than packed, you may not need to have it done as often, or at all. If you are unsure, ask a local professional for advice.

Keep It Neat

You may want to keep your grass looking good. One way to do this is to use an edger along the pathways and up your driveway. If you would like to use this lawn care tip, do so, but realize too that it does not do anything to improve the overall lawn's look and health.

Use these lawn care tips to help improve the quality of your lawn. You want to be sure that you fertilize and seed as you should. Most importantly, be sure that you pay attention to what your lawn needs before you actually apply treatments to it.

Cooking Fried Chicken for Novice Cooks

By KC Kudra

Fried chicken, also known as southern fried chicken, is a very popular food. There are many different recipes for fried chicken and you can cook it in various ways too. Deep frying is a common way to make fried chicken but you can also shallow fry it or even oven fry it, which is baking the chicken so it tastes like fried chicken but without the extra calories.

Fried Chicken Tips for Beginners

If you have not made fried chicken before, it is not difficult. As with many other chicken recipes, you have to be careful with the handling of raw chicken and wash any surfaces it has touched afterwards with hot, soapy water. You need to make a batter, dip the chicken into it, and then use a deep fryer to fry the chicken. When the chicken is white all the way through and the batter is crispy and golden brown, it is ready.

One of the easiest ways to coat your chicken pieces is to use a Ziploc bag full of your dry ingredients and add a few chicken pieces at a time, shaking well to coat every piece well. Next, you dip them into your liquid batter then fry them. This method also cuts down on mess!

If you dredge your chicken in flour, then into an egg yolk and milk mixture before dipping it into breadcrumbs, your chicken will come out really crispy and crunchy.

It is important to take care when using hot oil. Do not put your face too close to the oil and never leave it unattended. Use tongs to put the chicken in the oil and to remove it from the oil to prevent spattering.

Different chicken parts cook at different speeds. Legs and thighs need to be cooked at 165 degrees F. Start with these first, then add the breasts and then wings, turning the heat down to 160 degrees F, so everything finishes at the same time.

If your chicken is done but the rest of the meal is not, do not worry. Simply put some water in an oven dish and roll some tin foil into balls. Lay a large piece of tin foil over the balls, place the chicken on top, and cover everything with a lid. Put in a 175 degree F oven. The foil balls and foil layer work as a steamer to keep your chicken tender and moist until everything else is done.

Serving Fried Chicken

There are lots of different side dishes that go well with a deep fried chicken recipe including French fries and corn on the cob or mashed potatoes with green beans.

If you are making food for a party, fried chicken is a great recipe to make. Leave out some catsup and mayonnaise too so people have something to dip their fried chicken into. It can be tricking knowing how much food for a party is the correct amount but with fried chicken, you can be generous because any leftovers are nice cold the next day. - 1432

Discount flowers delivery services

By Diana Otis

You can still say what you feel by sending some beautiful flowers to someone, but if you are not a very smart shopper, you may fail to realize that there are some major differences in online florists. Today it is very easy for online consumers to end up paying top dollar for some emotionally uninspired and disappointingly mute flowers. With gifts like flowers you want them to be able to eloquently and lovingly speak the emotions you wish to convey. This is easy when you choose your flowers from one of the discount flower delivery sites. These companies are deeply committed to delivering the freshest and most stunning floral displays possible to the people that mean the most to you.

When someone chooses an item from a discount flower delivery site, his or her satisfaction is guaranteed. Only flowers with dewy freshness are used in these floral arrangements and customers are quick to note the difference. These quality cut flowers can maintain their color and radiance over extremely long periods of time with minimal care. There is also the satisfaction and peace of mind in knowing that these flowers are capable of eloquently expressing your feelings to anyone.

A major difference that separates the larger, established companies from the younger "upstarts" is evidenced by their approach to the flower business. The exotic and beautiful blooms featured in colorful advertisements are breathtaking, but there are many untold reasons why this look often falls short in real life. These advertising glossies are the work of a professional photographer who used the ideal setting, lighting, and temperature to achieve this look of floral perfection.

The goal is to maintain a happy and satisfied customer base by always having beautiful, fresh flowers, the lowest cost and exceptional service and delivery. If you are considering a florist to use, you can confidently work with one of the sites that proudly advertises "discount flower delivery". Remember that what they are discounting is the price you pay, not quality or service. The delivery of these flowers is done quickly, and at a reasonable price. Another way that some of the discounters are able to distinguish their stores is by offering an expanded delivery area. Now even people living in distant, rural communities can enjoy having flowers delivered to their home.

This means that these delicate blooms are heavily stressed, and failing, long before appearing on the open market. It is therefore no surprise that the freshly cut flowers shown in the pictures look more colorful and alive than those now being pulled out of the cooler. Floral shops can only preserve the appearance and texture of flowers for a short while, no matter how many chemicals and coolers are being used. In other words many consumers are paying top dollars to purchase flowers that only have an illusion of beauty that will disappear in the next few days.

By using flowers that are locally grown and readily available, it is much easier to maintain freshness and quality of each one. Discounters can also use flowers from their own gardens and greenhouses. The majority of the inventory for many of these stores are cut daily, bundled, and delivered by top commercial gardeners that live in the area. Having access to cheaper, but higher quality flowers lets the business owner keep costs low and customer satisfaction high.

The exotic and beautiful blooms featured in colorful advertisements are breathtaking, but there are many untold reasons why this look often falls short in real life. How To Understand The Needs And Requirements Of Your Houseplants

By Keith Markensen

It is always easier to prevent a disease than to cure it. Did you know that this is as true for people as it is for house plants? There are many different types of plant diseases and blights, but in fact more plants fall victim to neglect or the gardeners lack of knowledge, so if you want to make sure your plants are healthy, be sure to do your research. It is easier to care for them correctly from the beginning than to undo the damage youve already done. If you follow these tips, youll be able to garden successfully even if you dont think you have a green thumb. Everyone can be a gardener if they do their research first.

Many houseplants die from neglect. Your plants need constant care including watering, pruning, sunlight, food and soil, as well as good living conditions. Provide your plants with an atmosphere where they can prosper, and they will reward you. Pay attention to the temperature and humidity requirements of the plants you choose, and ensure that they get enough fresh air. You dont need to watch them constantly, and some dont even need daily attention or watering. But you must know the needs of the specific varieties of plants that you have chosen.

If you dont wish to grow plants that require a lot of care, try your hand at a cactus or succulent that only needs occasional watering. However, most other plants that you choose of your home require a little more care. This care is easy and inexpensive, and you will be rewarded with beautiful plants.

Many house plants also die because of gardeners trying to grow them in unsuitable conditions. Some plants, including Lantana and Morning Glory, require as much sun as you can provide them, and absolutely must be placed in a South-facing window. Others, like the African violet, and many varieties of English Ivy, will thrive in low light settings. Be aware of your plants location requirements if you are buying a plant for a specific spot.

Most indoor plants are somewhat adaptable. Because the modern home is designed for humans and not plants, it can be difficult for them to thrive. These indoor plants must acclimate to their new surroundings in order to live. Thats why a desert cactus and a tropical fern can live in the same room, as long as you care for them with an understanding of their needs.

There are a wide variety of houseplants available at your local nursery or garden center, and these vary widely in their requirements. Dont assume that what works for your cactus will work for your fern; many plants will die with the exact same conditions under which other plants thrive. - 1432

Organic Herbal Gardening On Balconies And Windowsills

By Susan Honeywell

Deciding to begin an organic herbal garden inside your house will not only have a dramatic and positive effect on your heath, but it will also make your abode more beautiful thanks to the beautiful plants that will grace your windowsills and balconies.

Organic herbal gardening in the house has certain advantages over outdoors growing. You are much less season-dependent, and you can have a plot of plants that is just the size you need it to be within constant reach of your kitchen.

Regarding the herbs that you can use, most of the varieties that you can grow outdoors are also good indoors. There are many themes around which to plan indoor organic herbal gardening, and of course you can combine these. Here is an example.

For instance, for a fragrant note you can grow angelica, bergamot, catmint, chamomile, thyme, lavender, lemon balm, and mint. This organic herb garden is also a great organic air freshener, ideal for indoor gardens in small flats.

Another thing you should focus on quickly is the kind of containers that you want to use for your plants. Not all plants grow equally well in small pots, so you should have an awareness of the minimum pot size for your chosen organic herbs.

Make sure that you don't get any tiny pots meant for growing from seed, unless that is your original intention! In fact, better to get slightly bigger pots if you have the space in your growing area.

Container size is important, so begin with those that are a bit larger than those in which the live nursery plants were purchased. This will give your plants room to start growing. Once your herbs are stabilized and growing well, transplant them into larger containers. This is important to ensure growth and so that nutrients make it from the soil into the plant.

To garden organically, it is important to only use earth that is organically certified. The soil should not be too alkaline or too acid, a medium acidity is just about right. And any fertilizers you choose to use should be organic too.

In many cases, indoors organic herbal gardening will need lighting. This is especially important for year-round indoor gardens, especially if your growing area is not sunny. Dissimilar plants have diverse light requirements, some need bright sun and others want shade. Most herbs grow better in full sun, but there are exceptions, so learn what each of your herbs needs. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to acquire some purpose-made electric grow lights

You will find that indoors organic herbal gardening is both useful and pleasant. Herbs are generally easy to grow, and require little safeguarding. Simply give them the right food, water, and sunlight, and you will have lots to cook with. - 1432

Lawn Care Tampa - Reasons To Use A Professional

By Jim Carpenter

There is so much more to caring for the lawn in your garden than you just cutting it. Like any other plants in your garden if you want your lawn to thrive you need to feed it and water it regularly. So it may be worthwhile considering employing a professional to care for yours if you don't have enough time to do this yourself. Below we offer some reasons for why you may want to employ a lawn care, Tampa company.

Taking care of a lawn is relatively easy to do, but you need to be aware of certain things if you want to ensure that the lawn at your Tampa home remains in great condition. Using the services of a professional lawn care company may well end up saving you lots of time and you don't need to know the ins and outs of lawn maintenance.

Before anything else happens the lawn care service which you employ will spend time analyzing the condition of your lawn as it stands currently. They will look at the variety of grass your lawn is made up of as well as how dense its turf is. They will also inspect the lawn to see if it is diseased and what weeds if any are present, along with checking how it is being watered. Each one of these things are very important for them to take into consideration in order that they can then develop a maintenance schedule which will ensure that your lawn looks great and grows well.

Once analysis of your lawn has been completed the company will then decide which of their professional services it is you require. Most lawn care companies will offer the basic services relating to weed, moss and pest control along with fertilization of your lawn. Plus some will offer a scarification service (which will explain in a little bit more detail later on), and also make sure that all fungus and diseases that can attack your lawn are kept under control.

In order to prevent weed growth on your lawn the lawn care company you choose will identify the weeds and then carry out the necessary measures to get rid of them. They will use specialist products that kill back the weeds in your lawn but that won't have any adverse affects on the lawn itself.

The mechanical process known as scarification is used by lawn care companies to get rid of any dead moss on it and to comb the thatch which encourages better growth in it. Also through this process water is then able to reach the roots of the grass more easily as well. Don't be too concerned if after this process has been carried out on your Tampa garden lawn that some parts need to be re-seeded.

A reputable lawn care company will ensure that they use only the best quality products that they can when it comes to caring for your lawn and keeping pests under control. They will first identify the pests that are an issue and then use the products that are best suited to treat and get rid of them.

You may well find that you don't in fact need to employ a Lawn Care, Tampa service throughout the whole year. Rather they will help you with learning the basics of mowing and watering your lawn correctly, but they will continue to deal with all the other issues relating to feeding of your lawn and control of the pests on it. - 1432

Heaters and Heat Sources for Your Seed Germination Glasshouse

By Roy Hardiment

When you make the final decision to heat your seed germination glasshouse make sure the temperature controls are working properly on your heaters as this will pay you dividends in reducing your heat costs

No matter whether you have a cold frame, greenhouse or polytunnel you'll need to provide some form of protection for your plants during the winter months. Insulation like polythene or bubble insulation will allow you to easily and cheaply provide protection to your plants from light frosts; you will still need a Heater to achieve higher temperatures to protect your more tender plants.

Types of Greenhouse Heaters

Make sure you only buy a good quality gas heater from a known source that is designed for efficient and safe operation in the moist greenhouse environment, or you could have dead plants from the fumes if the heater is not properly maintained or has not been installed correctly. Your plants will benefit from the extra heat but will also grow better with the additional CO2 which is generated from the all gas heaters.

Heaters that are suitable for heating greenhouses:

Propane Gas Heaters are very easy to install and run from the bottled gas. You should always read the instructions extra carefully.

Natural Gas Heaters, these run from your mains supply, providing a continuous and very reliable supply of heat. All natural gas heaters and appliances should be installed by a corgi registered fitter.

Electric glasshouse fan heaters are probably the easiest and most efficient way to provide heat for your glasshouse they will raise the temperature easily and efficiently, are designed for safe operation in the damp glasshouse environment. Most come ready to use, all you have to do is to plug the heater into your electric mains supply. The heat is very evenly distributed around the glasshouse by the fans. Another great advantage is they reduce the damping off disease as the air is constantly moving around in the glasshouse.

Paraffin Heaters are no longer as popular as they used to be, due to the carbon monoxide fumes they give off, these can be detrimental to plants unless there is enough ventilation while to heater is in operation. You should only use Blue Flame paraffin in a glasshouse and the heater must be well maintained, even then they will only give a variable output.

You should defiantly not use heaters designed for use in a domestic environment in a greenhouse, as these will not only have the extra insulation needed for models designed for use in a humid environment.

When electricity is installed in your plant propagation and seed germination greenhouse it should always be installed by a qualified electrician as it needs to have its own fuse board and trip switch. When you are bringing the electric cable from your house make sure that it will carry enough electric current to provide sufficient electricity for all the appliances you intend to use e.g. electric propagators and more. - 1432

Propagation By Leaf Cutting

By Thomas Fryd

Leaf Propagation You can raise many different plants by using leaf propagation, by cutting off portions of the leaves as cuttings. This method is used with plants that do not produce a shoot freely. Some plants that can be propagated in this manner are the Begonia rex, Gloxinia, and the spider plant and African violet. There have been many methods of leaf cutting that have been adopted, but in any case a matured leaf has to be used. The leaf is prepared by cutting a notch just below the junction of the main vein. The leaf is laid with the bottom facing down on the top of a pan filled with sandy soil. Then the pan is covered with a piece of glass and put in a warm room or greenhouse, this is done in the spring or early summer time.

The new plants will then develop just above the notches; when they are big enough, they are detached and treated like a seedling plant.

African violets can be propagated by leaf cutting, the bases once cut are placed just below the compost. As previously discussed, there are many ways and many types of plants that can be raised from leaf cuttings, but which are not, because it is easier to obtain a cutting or seedling. Some other plants that can be raised from leaf cuttings are Coleus, Fucshia and Fittonia.

Increasing Your House Plant Community By Division

All plants that produce rhizomes (underground creepy stems), or have many offsets or crown, can be increased by division of these structures in separate containers. The process is best done during the spring or whenever new growth has begun. Before you do division, the compost must be prepared and you need the requisite number of pots and provide drainage material. The day before the plants are to be divided, the soil should be soaked with clean water, or the dried out soil will fall away from the roots when you try to divide the plants.

When everything has been readied, the plants will need to be removed from their flowerpots by holding upside down and tapping on the rim of the pot, gently on the edge of a corner or bench.

Next, the crocks are removed with a pointy stick and the plant gets separated into portions of required size. Some plants, it will be found, can be divided by lightly breaking the balls of soil into sections, still others will have to be separated by cutting through the rhizomes or crowns with a sharp knife.

In most cases, each separated portion will have more than one shoot and several healthy roots.

When it comes time to pot the new divisions, for instance African violet divisions, you need to place them in pots which are large enough to accommodate the roots without cramping them. Then you need to pack the compost firmly around the plant and water using a container fitted with a fine rose. The operation of plant division can be very disturbing to the plant, so caring for the roots is necessary until the roots penetrate the new compost. To encourage the plant to develop strong roots, they must be kept in a cool, shaded location and the leaves need to be sprayed and moistened 3-4 days per day. This can be done by either syringing them or sponging the leaves individually with clean water. After being treated this way for a couple of weeks, the plants should be returned to their normal positions.

Easy plants to propagate by division:

Asparagus, Billbergia, Clivia, Liriope, Spider plant and African violet. - 1432

Solar Powered Garden Lights

By Nicole White

Solar powered garden lights, which are stuck in the ground, are a great addition to any garden or yard. They absorb the free energy from the sun during daylight hours, and then radiate a peaceful and elegant glow for hours after nightfall. Some people use them as porch lighting and deck rail lights as well.

It is not hard to see why so many people love these technological wonders. First off, once you have paid for a set of these solar powered garden lights they will run untended and off the grid for hundreds of days, so they don't use up any more precious energy resources.

The basic design is normally unchanged; a top section which will have rechargeable batteries, LED lights and a tiny solar panel, and a lower spike section to push into the ground. There are so many variations to the basics, however. While you are shopping you will see hundreds of styles of solar powered garden lights.

Homeowners have gotten very creative as they place their solar powered garden lights around their property. From lining the edges of sidewalks, to spotlighting a rock garden, to additional security lights, these handy lights are everywhere.

If fountains and ponds are your thing, then the lily pad shaped floating lights will be right up your alley. And how about a set of lantern shaped faux street lamp type solar lights? You can even find solar powered garden lights made to look like a turtle or mushroom.

I love the lights that change colour while you watch. These ones come in a clear hanging globe. Another simple yet useful application for solar powered garden lights is ones placed right on the edges of steps to help avoid trips and spills of anyone using the steps after dark.

While you do have to pay a bit to get your solar powered garden lights, they are well worth the investment. Compared to traditional wired in systems which require an electrician and a landscaper to install, the cost is much lower. These lights make your home and yard more attractive and use less energy at the same time. - 1432

What Is A Compost

By Anthony Tripp

If you've been try to become more green and figure out ways to better care for environment then you've probably heard of compost. But if you're asking yourself, what is compost? Then read one because you may be about to take a step in a more environmentally friendly direction that your vegetable and flower garden will love you for.

Compost is created when yard & food waste decomposes. Micro organisms & invertebrates (also known as little buggers) feed on the waste, live their brief lives, reproduce, die and then they become waste too. This repeating cycle is how the soil gets it's nutrients replenished. Like Mufasa said, "We all have our place in the circle of life." When it comes to compost, it 's just a very small circle.

Creating compost is a slow process that will usually take a few months. The correct ratio of browns to green, diligently turning a compost pile to keep it aerated and watching the moisture content will reward with fresh earthy compost much faster. The more attention you pay your compost pile, the quicker your garden scraps will become compost. And even if ignore your pile, you'll still get compost eventually. Just look at the soil next time you go into the woods. There's no one out there tending to the forest and yet the ground will probably be made up of dark, rich soil.

It may be hard to believe but compost is a lot better for plants that synthetic fertilizers. Nature got it right and man got a little sidetracked by making money. Some fertilizers will actually harm your soil in the long run by breaking down and leaving salts.

Adding compost to the soil is creating healthy soil. You're doing what nature is already trying to do but your just doing it faster and more efficiently.

Compost is not only great for your plants but it's great for your soil and even for the environment. They say that in the United States that 30% of all garbage is lawn and garden waste. Instead of putting those leaves and grass clippings out at the curb they could be composted. That would not only cut down on the space needed in land fills but it would make everyone's gardens grow bigger, healthier and less dependent on synthetic fertilizers.

Compost is a great way to have a strong, healthy garden. It not only feeds the plants but also helps the soil. And healthy soil is the best way to have a great vegetable garden. - 1432

The Benefits of an Indoor Garden

By Thomas Fryd

When you are living in the center of an Amazonian jungle, the last thing recommended would be to attempt to do indoor gardening. Why would you think of trying to compete with the beauty of mother nature and come out the loser. If like the majority of the population in the western world, you do not live at the basin of a rain forest, then something worth looking into is indoor gardening. As a substitute for your own personal jungle.

Why should one consider an indoor garden versus an outdoor one? The reasons are fairly simple, you do not need to get all dirty down on your hands and knees in the dirt. You will never have to brave the elements that will do its best to compete with you. It will improve the appearance of your home and make you feel better in turn. Ultimately, in the larger scheme of things it is great for you.

It may be hard to imagine how indoor gardening can be good for you. However, it does not have anything to actually do with the garden, but more with the plants. If you think back to your high school days and pressure from peers, you may remember distantly hearing something in science class about plants and a word called photo-something.

To give your brain a refresher crash course, it is a process called photosynthesis, when plants clean the air of carbon dioxide and in turn release fresh air filled with oxygen into the environment. If you are living in the jungle, there is not much of an issue with that, however, most people live in small homes, so plants are the logical solution. Hence, indoor gardening.

When you begin planting your own personal rainforest, you can substitute indoor gardening, you have a wide array of exotic plant options to select from - from tropical foliage plants to guzmania plants. The plants that an outdoor garden would not be privy to using. There is a long list of plants right now, but if one is interested, then a trip to the local plant nursery is in order.

You will get a better idea of what kinds of plants that are available for you to choose from and what types should be avoided. They just will not properly grow indoors. You will also find that with indoor gardening, there are certain types of plants can be temperamental and will not grow any place indoors. A simple place to begin would be to try your luck at gardening. Simple to grow plant varieties that are useful in the kitchen and not the stubborn varieties.

Gardening, of any type, does not get any more spectacular than indoor gardening, especially for the non-outdoor inclined person who does not want to be exposed to worms or bugs. Any type of crawling insect that resides in your outdoor garden, will not be found in the indoor variety. The perks of indoor garden are unlimited! - 1432

By KC Kudra

Chicken curry, or curry chicken, is a much-loved dish all over the world and is a great way to use boneless chicken. There are lots of different kinds of chicken curry dishes including Indian curry, Thai curry, Chinese curry and more. Curry can be a lot of fun to experiment with and you can vary the balance of spices or try different spices. You can use different meats or vegetables or add fruit and nuts if you want.

Different Kinds of Curry

In India, a curry is a meal with a soup-like consistency. It is made with spices, chickpea flour, clarified butter, and yogurt. The word curry, when used in Thailand, means vegetables, fish, or meat cooked in a spiced sauce.

Different regions use different ingredients in their curry recipes. Tamil curry is a combination of shallow fried meat or fish and vegetables cooked with a selection of dry spices. Punjabi curry uses wheat instead of rice and has a lot of butter and cream. A Malaysian curry will have coconut milk and bay leaves.

A lot of curry powder mixes feature turmeric which gives curry a yellow color. Ginger, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, tamarind, cumin, cardamom, nutmeg, garlic, and chilies are also used in a lot of curry recipes. Indian and Thai curries can be red, green, or yellow. Red curries are made from red chilies and green curries are made from green chilies. Yellow curry is made mostly with cumin and turmeric but it might include hot peppers too.

A boneless chicken curry might be described as hot and spicy, fragrant or fruity, depending on the ingredients and spices used. So how do you go about making a delicious curry out of some boneless chicken, some vegetables, and some spices?

Tips for Making Curry

One of the best tips for making chicken curry is to use authentic ingredients rather than a readymade curry powder or paste. It is not hard to find the right chicken curry ingredients because most of them are available in large general grocery stores as well as Asian grocery stores.

Do not be afraid to experiment with your curries. Curry has been experimented on a lot throughout history and it is a good idea to try out different spice combinations and become familiar with spices so you can make up your own curry recipes or adapt existing ones.

Rice is often served with curry but you might like to try serving an Indian bread such as roti or naan instead or a spiced potato recipe. You can also make a dry spicy coating for a boneless chicken breast rather than making a curry sauce. Then you can eat the chicken in a packed lunch or at a picnic. This type of versatility as well as the wonderful flavors is what makes curry dishes as well loved as they are and it is certainly no surprise that curry is such a popular dish all over the world. - 1432

How You Can Avoid Termites In Your Home

By Graham Bunn

Any homeowner will start to experience a big headache when termites invade their residence. These wood chomping bugs are one of the perennially difficult insects to exterminate and professional pest control is usually required. You can help to minimize any occurrence by learning a few things about them.

If you can find out what termites tend to learn towards then you reduce the possibility of them breeding in your home. It will not be easy but the time and money saved in the long run will be more than worth the trouble.

If you live in an area that enjoys high moisture levels, then you will not enjoy the onset of termites. These ant look-alikes will invade any area that has plenty of water especially in the ground. It is why you must keep your home dry as much as possible.

You can do so by avoiding any nook and cranny at home that might collect rain water. It also helps to keep mosquitoes away as an extra benefit. Leaking faucets and water pipes are other high risk areas that have to be guarded against.

Wood is the food of choice for termites. They need large amounts of cellulose in order to breed. So if you happen to live in a house made from wood, take the necessary precautions to protect yourself from these insects.

You can also employ pest control to use termite sprays regularly in your wooden home. The first level of control will also come from using pre-treated wood in the building of your home. Such material contains substances that discourage termites from festering in them.

If your house is surrounded by soil, you will also need to check periodically for termite nests being built around or under it. This is one of the hardest points to avoid since it is quite common to be in such areas. The soil can be treated with termite prevention chemicals. For those who dislike using chemicals, you will need to conduct more regular checks for any signs of termites to be one step ahead.

Once you know where termites prefer to gather, it will be a strong first step to preventing them from doing so in your own home. There are also other precautions that can be taken so it is always necessary to find out what you can constantly do to improve your chances in the battle against termites. - 1432

Earth 4 Energy is considered as the #1 renewable energy solution today by many because of the ease of use it provides to users and of course because of its proven efficacy.

Anyone can use the Earth 4 Energy guide, regardless of his or her technical knowledge, to generate own electricity from home through the use of wind power and solar power. The manual is believed to have set clear illustrations and instructions that helps users to successfully build and install own power generating systems easily, and for just less than $200.

Eventually, once generators are set up and smoothly running, results will start to show up. User will begin saving 80-100% on power bills. Not to mention that if user will generate more power than he or she uses, his or her power company will pay him or her for it. Thus, Earth 4 Energy is indeed a great renewable energy solution to have!

Make Natural Power is one of those several renewable energy solutions that are trying to make a difference however failed for reasons like lack of ability to provide good information.

Make Natural Power has a great cover. However, according to some individuals who have tried it, it is no less than a guide with a great cover but with poor information. Make Natural Power has all the features of the other guides but it doesn't have the clear information that people will need. Illustrations and instructions are not clear and seem to assume the user has technical knowledge.

Make Natural Power is a good renewable solution if we consider its features and cover, but the rest beyond features and cover, then it may not be unfortunately.

#3: Homemade Energy

Homemade Energy has been one of the popular renewable energy solutions out on the market because of its unique, easy-to-download feature. It is actually offered in an instant download format which allows anyone to have it in just a few minutes.

The book is poorly written and doesn't provide essential details like the exact specifications. For an instance, the motor/generator required for the wind turbine project. Thus, Homemade Energy may not be really a good choice.

#2: Make Natural Power

Like any other renewable energy solutions, Homemade Energy may help you solve your problem with regards to paying high power bills however with no high guarantee and with no definite answer as to how soon. The book is poorly written and doesn't provide essential details like the exact specifications. For an instance, the motor/generator required for the wind turbine project. Thus, Homemade Energy may not be really a good choice. - 1432

Trees Produce Better Crops If Pruned Regularly

By Roy Hardiment

If you want good looking trees in your garden they will need pruning regularly.

Your trees will reward you 1000% next season with stronger growth and an abundance of flowers and fruit.

One of the greatest causes where fruit trees only produce small fruit or very little blossom is the lack of pruning.

Pruned trees are stronger and their branches are less likely to break making the trees safer so there is less likelihood of a branch falling and causing damage.

Required tools are gloves, knife, saw and secateurs.

Try and imagine how you would like the tree to look after is has been pruned and note the major branches that need removing.

The branches all come from the trees trunk which forms the main structure of the tree. It is best to leave this in place and design the tree around this to your liking.

Pruning is about taking out branches that are growing parallel with each other and any that cross over others or causing congestion, this will allow the remaining branches to develop and produce an abundance of fruit and flowers.

Always cut out branches that are growing inward, toward the center of the tree, these will only clutter up the shape of the tree.

Take a good look at the three and visualize the areas that look congested applying the guidelines mentioned earlier to thin the offending areas.

Tall trees may need reducing in height and can be cut down to the required level, removing the main leader first and then shaping the tree according to how you would like to look.

After cutting off larger branches you should paint the cut ends with a special tree paint that you can buy from your local garden shop.

Dead and dying braches should always be removed whatever the season, as they could cause disease if left.

You should always cut away any dead or dying wood, this can be removed at any time of the year, although if you do it during the growing period you should always paint the cut ends.

Always dip the blades of you pruning tools in a solution of bleach to sterilize them and prevent the spread of disease from one tree to another. As the trees sap can carry disease.

Most branches have a collar at the base of the branches, you should leave this, enabling the cut to heal over and prevent any disease getting in and killing the tree.

If you have trees that you rely on to provide shade during the summer, you can thin these out to maintain their shape, but be careful not to lower their height too much or you will reduce the shade you require.

Collecting all the old leaves and any fallen fruit during the winter, before you start pruning will help prevent the carry-over of disease from one season to the other, giving your trees and better start next year. - 1432

The History of Saint Valentines Day

By Mary Smith

There are a dizzying number of legends and stories of the origins of Valentines Day. It may have begun as a feast in ancient Rome, or based on one or two early Christian martyrs. The romantic connection could have begun sometime in the middle ages in the tradition of courtly love with a poem by Geoffery Chaucer. The following are some of the more recognized stories.

Lupercalia was an ancient Roman, or possibly pre-Roman festival celebrated every year to honor Lupercus, the god of fertility. It was originally a shepherd festival local to the area around Rome. It survived into Christian times and was abolished by Pope Gelasius near end of the 5th century.

During the reign of Claudius II, Emperor of Rome, several wars were being fought. Many men however failed to join the army. Claudius felt their wives and families were the cause, so he banned both marriages and engagements. At the time, a priest named Valentines married couples in spite of the ban. When Valentine was discovered he was put to death, and afterwards, named a Saint.

The oldest valentine still in existence is housed in the manuscript collection in the British Library in London England. It was written by Charles, the Duke of Orleans to his wife. He had been captured at the Battle of Agincourt and was being held in the Tower of London.

In South America, customs vary. Brazil has Boyfriends/Girlfriends day on June 12th when gifts, flowers, cards and chocolates are exchanged. In Guatemala and through out much of South America February 14th is Love and Friendship day and quite popular. Similar to our version of Valentines Day, many people also offer acts of appreciation for friend.

Valentine's Day in both Denmark and Norway is celebrated on February 14th and called Valentinsdag. But the traditions are much less commercial. Valentine traditions in these countries center on having a quiet romantic dinner with their partner or sending a card or a rose to a loved one.

Valentine's Day in Iran is still celebrated in spite of some government restrictions. The celebration is called Sepandarmazgan and is celebrated on February 17th. The tradition is becoming more common among younger Iranian girls and boys.

In the late 1840's the first mass-produced Valentine cards were produced by Esther Howland in Worchester, Massachusetts. Esther's cards, made of embossed paper lace were inspired by English valentines. By the early 1850's, one writer claimed that St. Valentine's Day had become a national holiday.

In Western culture the Valentine's Day tradition is for lovers to express their love by giving flowers, cards or candy. The practice of giving Valentines Day cards was expanded to all types of gifts during the last 50 years. Gifts such as roses or chocolates are now common. - 1432

How To Make a Bonsai - Which are The Most Popular Styles

By Andrew Perry

Simply put, the miniaturized versions of bigger trees are what we call Bonsai trees. They're alive and they're not plastics that look similar to each other. There are indeed different bonsai styles like the bigger trees. In fact, their shapes and forms are what please the bonsai tree holders. These styles are formal upright, informal upright, cascade, semi cascade, slant and windswept. These are the different types of bonsai trees available for shaping, training or forming. Knowing the styles enable the bonsai lovers to choose specific pots for the specific style the bonsai tree is trained to be and decide which caring tips they need to grow the trees beautifully.

Upright styles: Formal and Informal

Formal upright style is the style where the trunk of the tree is straight upwards and the first lower branches are far wider than the rest. The preceding branches will then proceed to shape an overall triangular look for the tree. This is a great shape for beginners to practice with. Trees that are suitable for these types of bonsai trees style are Pine, Larch, Juniper and Spruce. The informal upright style is similar to the formal upright except that the top branch needs to be extended forward instead of upwards. This lends the tree an impression of motion.

Slant style Bonsai

The slant on the other hand is a style where the tree trunk extends to one direction while the lowest branch extends to the other direction. This style is quite common and very easy to train. Informal upright types of bonsai trees style are suitable for Beech, Japanese maple and Trident Maple trees while the slant style can be done on almost any bonsai tree.

Cascade style

You can also choose to make these bonsai trees into cascade and the semi cascade styles. These styles have a sloping effect and the trunk is vertical. Aside from that, the truck is also turned to one direction while the branches are trained to slope or cascade lower than the surface of the pot. If you dont want the trunks to turn into one direction, you could opt for the semi-cascade style. The semi cascade is similar to the cascade except the trunk gradually slopes rather than one that turns into one direction.

Windswept style of Bonsai

Adventurous people or people that want unique style choose to have a bonsai tree that does not look too pretty and orderly. They choose the windswept style which by its name, can be said to be a miniature version of a tree that has been swept by strong winds. The bonsai tree would have an unruly effect but still very beautiful.

Pruning Helps to make the styles of Bonsai tree

To prune the tree is the key to getting the style of bonsai tree people want. These styles have been practiced for centuries as an art form. To maintain the tree beautiful and in their most gorgeous styles, all the bonsai lover has to do is to prune and trim it. Another benefit of pruning and trimming is that it could make sure there would be balance in the bonsai tree as unkempt growth is reduced and trimmed off. - 1432

LCD TVs - What you need to know before you buy

By Michael Hiltone

The most popular way of generating an image on any modern day television is by the use of LCD television technology (liquid crystal display).

The nature of a television image is that it is constantly changing both in colour and in contrast.

An lcd television has a back light permanently turned on, which is the source of a televisions brightness. To create brightness and darkness it must be able to limit or increase flow of this light.

The cylindrical property of a crystal allows light to flow through it. The twisted element of a crystal allows the regulation of the amount of light passing through. The amount of twist is dependent on the amount of electrical current passing through. Increase the current to tighten the crystal and therefore reduce/prevent light passing through ie dark scenes. Decrease the current to relax the crystal and allow light to flow through freely ie light colours. The complete restriction of light is impossible on this method though as however much current is passed into a crystal it can never fully prevent light passing through. Also, the close proximity of other pixels means light seepage to neighbouring crystals although this is kept to a minimum with polarized glass (see later). This is why it is well documented that LCD televisions cannot achieve and will not achieve a real true black.

The colour issue is created by sub dividing each pixel with three colour elements/crystals ie red, green and blue (primary colours). The interaction of these three colours creates the colour palette (contrast ratio) of the television.

The matrix of liquid crystals are placed between two pieces of glass which are polarized to focus the light source and give pixel perfect razor sharpness to the proceedings.

Across the whole internal construct of an lcd tv`s panel is a matrix of micro thin transparent transistors. The matrix feeds information via electrical currents to each individual pixel which then controls the feed of information and ultimately the colour and temperature of an individual pixel. This then ultimately creates, over the whole matrix within the lcd television, the image.

As can be seen, to create a final picture, the lcd television needs to perform rapid fire actions on a micro level to create an image on a macro level. This synergy of components is something which is being further refined by lcd television manufacturers and it is still surprising how far television engineers are taking the concept in the strive to make the perfect screen. - 1432

Say it With Valentine's Day Flowers - Join the Conversation

By Mary Smith

Think about having an intimate conversation with a loved one. Would it be possible to have that conversation without speaking or writing? Suppose you found someone you'd like to know better. How could you develop that relationship without speaking or writing?

That was the situation during much of the 1800's in Victorian England. Extreme discretion was required. Emotional expression, especially if it was romantic in nature, was strictly taboo. Such thoughts couldn't even be whispered or written down. As a result people soon found other ways to express their thoughts and feelings. One popular way was to attach special meanings to flowers.

As a result, secret meanings were given to every type and color of flower. Bouquets became secret messages. An exchange of flowers became a conversation without words. The way the flowers were presented and the way they were accepted also added meaning. Many secret messages were romantic in nature, but some were rejections or insults.

Small bouquets of mixed flowers, know as tussie-mussies, became quite popular. Together with the secret language of flowers, they allowed intentions to be declared, and refusals and acceptances to be made. They allowed the expression of wishes, thoughts and emotions that people of the time dared not speak aloud.

Eventually the symbolism became so complex that help was needed to decipher the messages. Dictionaries and even whole books were written to ensure that the messages were properly conveyed and clearly understood.

Over time, many cultures have used flowers to express emotions. The Greeks, Persians and the Japanese, for example, have all created their own flower language. The meanings change to fit the need of the specific culture but the need to express emotions with flowers has continued to this day.

Many cultures had elaborate and lengthy courtship rituals. The giving and receiving of flowers was often an important part of the process. Those practices led to the prominent place of flowers in our modern culture. Valentines Day, Mothers Day, and Easter, among others, simply wouldn't be the same celebrations without flowers and plants.

Like the Victorians, we still use flowers to express our emotions. Unlike them, our messages are typically much simpler. For Valentine's Day this year, instead of sending a simple message, try a bouquet of mixed flowers for a message full of hidden meaning. Search online for "language of flowers" for some great ideas. Be sure to add a note to the bouquet to explain the deeper message. Don't forget to order your Valentine's flowers early to ensure a timely delivery. - 1432

Simple HVAC Maintenance

By tommy lorada

Central air conditioning can be a hassle to fix when something breaks or a certain component malfunctions. But there are also some very easy preventive maintenance stuff that you can do to evade many common problems that happen in central air conditioners.

One thing that you should know are the main parts that make up residential central air conditioning system. The air handler, which is usually located inside a closet in the house, and the condensing unit which is always located somewhere outside of the house.

The easiest preventive maintenance you can do on an HVAC system is change your air filter once a month. This will keep the coils clean, and also make it so there is always a good air flow through the HVAC system, dirty filters will waste your electricity and prevent your HVAC system from performing efficient.

Clean out your condensate line in your HVAC system every couple of months. This can be done by purchasing slime tablets, blowing out the line with CO2 or nitrogen, or by using a wet dry vacuum. When a condensate line gets clogged up it could shut down your unit, or flood your house.

If you find that your line backed up and shut down your air conditioning system, or flooded the house you will have to clean the line out. It will probably require a wet dry vacuum to do this, since the slime tablets are mainly made for preventing slime and sludge inside the condensate line.

Make sure that both of the coils on the air handler and the condensing unit are kept clean. For the air handler coils all you have to do is make sure that you always have a clean filter in, then you should be fine. The inside coils in most cases get dirty because of not having an air filter installed at all.

Keep the outside coils clean by keeping them free of outside debris such as leaves, any plants or bushes that may be rubbing up on the condenser unit. The condensing unit needs room to push out the hot air from inside so make sure that there is nothing within a couple of feet of it that could cause a air restriction.

When your HVAC system is cooling properly, there should be cool air coming out of the vents inside and hot air from the condenser outside. If this is not happening then you could possibly have a Freon leak, which can only be fixed by a licensed HVAC technician.

These are just a couple of easy things that anyone can do, these steps do not require intense HVAC training. Follow these little steps in preventative maintenance and you will greatly increase the efficiency of how your HVAC system runs over the years. - 1432

How to Garden Organically

By Joe Shiloh

The concepts of organic gardening consist of conservation and preservation of the soil by use of natural methods. They do not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers to condition the soil. Conservation of water and preserving the purity of the ground water is also part of organic gardening. Improving the soil without upseting the natural balance can also be done by use of all natural organic soil methods.

In organic gardening you use natural methods to control insects, plant diseases, soil conditions, mulching and fertilization. Soil conditions can be treated with an all natural compost made from simple ingredients like coffee grounds, banana peels, eggshells and grass clippings that can be broke down and tilled right into your garden soil. Left over natural mulches from year to year or even crop to crop can also be worked into the soil to help condition it for the next crop.

In an organic vegetable garden one of the first thing you do is to condition your soil for whatever crop you intend to grow by adding soil nutrients like composting, peat, sand, manures etc and tilling them into the soil. Companion planting is another trick of the organic gardener to help control bugs. Planting green peppers in with your tomatoes will help to control cutworms. Planting marigolds around your vegetable garden will also help to keep the pests from getting to your plants. Many forms of herbs can also deter pests while bringing benificial insects like bees to your garden.

Fertilizers do not have to be chemical in order to be effective in your garden. Many common household spices and herbs work great in keeping pests off your plants without toxic chemicals. Garlic, tobasco sauce, ground caynenne pepper and even cinnamon will work as a pest control. Fertilizers can even be made naturally and made into a tea that you can dilute and spray your plants with made from something as simple as crushed eggshells and water or even beer.

Mulching is an important step in organic gardening or really any gardening as it helps the plants stay watered and also acts as a shade barrier for their roots as they establish themselves in the garden. Another benefit to mulching is that it can act as a weed barrier and make keeping your garden weed free a lot easier for you and it makes a neat clean walking path to reach your plants but best of all at the end of the season or in between crops the mulch can be tilled under to help improve the soil. - 1432

Garden Mulch

By Thomas Fryd

If you want to make a good impression on your friends and neighbors, then your lawn and garden may need some attention. The right landscaping materials and plants can enhance and beautify your home and increase its overall appeal.

You can turn your simple barren, bland yard into a work of art at a relatively affordable price, by doing it yourself.

Recently, in the past few years there have been many companies that have introduced a wide variety of bagged rocks and mulches. The newest line from Vigoro offers the landscaping artist over 26 varieties of products. They vary in size, color and shapes, so your possibilities are limitless.

Beautiful and decorative landscaping rock and mulch are a great way to improve your yard. Try using mulch to accent your garden, flower beds, driveway and walkway. Mulch also provides added benefits, other than being attractive they improve your soil and plants. Mulch is good at controlling and slowing erosion, maintaining proper moisture levels, and it controls weed population and soil insulation.

Here are just a few helpful tips when choosing and adding mulch to your yard or landscape:

1.) Choose a mulch that lasts a long time and is heavy, this prevents it from being easily washed away from heavy rains.

2.) Choose a mulch with looser structure to allow better soil aeration

3.) Make sure to apply mulch at the proper time, during late spring it will help preserve water and reduce ground temperature

4.) When applying mulch make sure it is 1-2 inches deep. A finer, more fluffy mulch should be applied 3-4 inches deep.

5.) Ensure mulch is applied evenly by raking through it with your hands

6.) Water the mulch after applying

7.) Make sure to move mulch a few inches away from plants and tree bottoms

To prevent grass growth and keep your plants in a healthy state, there is a mulch made by Vigoro called "Mulch with Weed Stop". This mulch is the first ever to contain a pre-emergent herbicidal agent. It controls weeds for up to 4 months, while allowing your annuals and spring bulbs, shrubbery and trees to continue growing and thriving for an ever-beautiful landscaping or garden. It is the only mulch that contains natural forest products and is certified by the Mulch and Soil Council. - 1432

Flowers Delivery Made Easy To Jacksonville

By Suzy Crossman

Now you can find easy flower delivery methods for Jacksonville, Florida to send your wishes to your loved ones. Online Florists have made it real easy and have captured the major parts of the market where people want to send flowers to their relatives or friends who live at far off places.

Earlier people used to call up their local florist for sending the same and even some telephone florists had gained immense fame but now these tend to fade off as these are comparatively slower and uncertain means of sending flowers.

These days' florists are setting up a network where they can reach the far off places and still serve from the local office by sharing their commission with the other florist. People who want to send flowers to their relatives and friends at Jacksonville, Florida can have a great experience with their service. These work on the basic principal of location and forward their order to the florist closest to the delivery point.

Some other techniques used by florists were telephone florists which eliminated middleman and sent the delivery information immediately to the closest florist. This was not preferred by most senders as here you can not know the actual flowers that you send and people most often want to choose flowers.

Generally when you order flowers with your local florists for delivery, most of the times you do not see them because they are ordered on the phone. Telephone florists work the same way for sending flowers to Jacksonville.

When you order flowers via the online route, however, you open up a world of choices. You can not only choose the type of arrangement that you want, but the container that it comes in and the blooms. You have choices when it comes to the type of flowers that you send and how you send them when you choose an online florist.

They connect with florists in their network all over the country the same way that telephone florists do, but the difference is that you get to see what you are purchasing before you actually make the purchase. This makes a huge difference to people who want to arrange for flower delivery to Jacksonville, Florida.

If you know someone who lives in this part of Florida and you want to send them flowers, there is no better way to do it than by going online, choosing an arrangement and card, signing it or writing your own message and then commencing an order for a flower delivery to Jacksonville. - 1432

Growing A Tropical Plant

By Kent Higgins

Tropical plants are among the most popular indoor gardening and plant growing choices today. Many are drought-tolerant and easily cared for. Most tropicals originate in areas where it is warm, but relatively dry with sandy soils. This makes them very easy to care for if temperature can be controlled (such as indoors).

Watering these plants is very easy, requiring only that you pay attention to how much or how little they need. Many will go, in the wild, for two months without water at all during the winter season in the tropical climes they come from. This means that you can allow the soil to dry before re-watering without fear of hurting the plant. Proper drainage is the key to success here. Sansevieria, for example, prefer dry soil between waterings.

Most tropical plants also do well with little or almost no fertilizer added to the soil they're in. While each species is different, most come from sandy, nutrient-poor soils and therefore do not do well in soils with heavy nutrients because the plant can over feed on them. Most tropicals instead prefer micro-nutrients, or very small quantities of nutrients rather than heavy, plant soils with lots of ingredients.

Hibiscus does will with a 30-10-10 mixture (30% nitrogen, 10% phosophorus and magnesium). Other plants will want much lighter mixtures of the three. Know what your plant requires so that you don't over or under feed it.

Also be aware of the sunlight the plants are exposed to. While it goes without saying that tropicals enjoy a lot of sunlight, smaller plants (especially) can easily overheat in the extremely humid micro-climate that's created when the plant is right up against the window. Watch your plants for signs of wilting or burning and remove them quickly. Rotating the plant regularly will also help.

There are many cold-tolerant tropicals as well. I know, sounds like an oxymoron, but it's true. Peace Lily or Spider Plant are examples of this. If you wish to plant these, be aware that they will do best in cooler conditions, so on the porch or patio is best or near a cold window in the winter time. Ficus varieties are also usually cold-tolerant as well, as another choice.

Some tropical plants even do well in low-light just like other large indoor tropicals, though these are more rare than the cold-tolerant varieties. Above all, know what kind of plant you have and what it prefers so you can accommodate it. This will lead to healthier, stronger plants that are more beautiful to look at and which will flower more readily. - 1432

How do Florists create Flower Arrangements?

By Amy Nutt

Many people who are unfamiliar with the art of floristry simply believe that a florist does nothing more than jam a bunch of flowers into a pretty vase and then mark up the price to make a living " this could not be further from the truth. Florists must have excellent coordination, a keen eye for design and a good working knowledge of the plants that they use in order to

A steady Hand and a keen Eye

A good florist knows how to select the healthiest and heartiest forms of the plant they will use in a particular arrangement. They know how to cut and handle each individual flower (or any other piece of foliage that they are using) so that none of the pieces of the arrangement get damaged during the creative process. A broken and bruised flower has no place in a beautiful arrangement, so the utmost care is taken throughout the entire process to ensure that all the flowers remain healthy.

Knowledge of Color and Design

When creating a custom arrangement, a florist must know what colors will work together in the arrangement as well as what will work in particular surroundings. They must also be aware of textures and smell that will work together in a pleasing manner to make the most overall aesthetically appealing arrangement.

Some florists are capable of this entire part of the process by natural instinct, they can just tell what types of plants and flowers will work together and which will not. Other florists will study art and design in an effort to give them a creative edge in this area to produce the best flower arrangements possible.

Theme Arrangements

Creating beautiful flowers isnt just a seasonal thing; all types of occasions and holiday require the florist to put forth their effort in developing new and exciting arrangements. Weddings , birthday flowers, anniversaries, births, deaths and holidays are all occasions that flower arrangements can be provided for.

During some of these more special or thoughtful occasions, florists may go to an extra level to create a particularly beautiful piece. Some florists will create arrangements using a customers favorite flower as the centerpiece upon request " in these arrangements a florist may have to use materials that they are not entirely familiar working with so the creative part of their personality must really come into play.

For other occasions the florist may create an arrangement that looks floral, but doesnt include any flowers. Arrangements may be made from food products or other unusual items to create a truly original and custom arrangement.

For other occasions a florist may be called upon to create floral wreaths, corsages or boutonnires, which can be even more difficult because these arrangements dont have anything in which to house or contain them.

Floristry is certainly not something that just anyone can do, the how of making a flower arrangement is a difficult task that requires many elements and areas of knowledge to complete as beautifully and perfectly as possible for a special occasion. Flower arrangements are the centerpieces of such forever memorable occasions as weddings and proms and gifts that the memory of will be cherished for years to come.

Flower arrangements can alter the whole mood of an event; a truly beautiful arrangement can be the icing on the cake, so to speak. Its true that anyone can easily pick some flowers and plop them in a vase, but only a well trained and ultra creative florist can create an arrangement that will not only steal the show, but last through it as well. - 1432

Where Can I Send Unique Valentines Day Flowers Cheap

By Aurelia Fleur

The celebration of Valentines Day goes back many centuries and it has taken many forms over the years, from the pagan days of the Roman Empire to today's marketing bonanza, but all your loved one cares about is getting her bouquet of beautiful flowers on that special day.

[I:0:J]Traditionally, one opts for vibrant red roses or less common white varieties. However, a smart boyfriend will realize that there are a great many other sorts of blossoms to select from. If you look into the significances of the various blooms going back to the Victorian Era, you can assemble a lovely and truly memorable bouquet of for the one you love.

Petunias tell someone that their presences soothes you, orange blossoms are a symbol of marriage (this makes this flower very appropriate for presenting during a proposal), and phlox tells someone that "our souls are united". The lily are elegant which tells someone that your love is honorable, pure of heart, and majestic but use caution as the orange lily is interpreted to be a sign of hatred. Spanish jasmine represents sensuality, the purple hyacinth begs forgiveness, hibiscus tells someone that you are consumed by their love and beauty. Pure love is represented by white carnations.

Along with the bouquet, you could send a small note explaining its relevance and your reason for having selected a particular flower. A note like this could do wonders if accompanied by her favorite , if you know what it is. You must avoid sending asphodel which represents grief, striped carnation which stands for refusal in love, yellow chrysanthemum representing slighted love, oleander for caution, or rhododendron for danger, in addition to the orange lily mentioned before.

Valentines Day flowers are a great way to show the true feelings and emotions you have for your special someone. They should come from your heart and not because it's expected by society. During the time before Valentine's Day, sales prices for usually skyrocket because of high demand, and they are typically hard to get, if you are a last minute shopper.

It is usually much more romantic to deliver the flowers yourself, but if someone delivers a bouquet of roses to work it will give the person receiving them bragging rights. But the main thing is making sure your flowers delivery is on time, for example, arriving on the 15th of February are likely to cause trouble, no matter what their meaning, rather then affection. - 1432

A Guide To Benefits Of Purchasing An Outdoor Shed

By Chris Channing

Having a shed isn't for everyone- especially those without the space in the yard for a new structure to be built and maintained. But for anyone with the space, a deep consideration should be taken in buying such a structure for a wide variety of possibilities in how to make use of them.

A studio of any sort, whether for painting or audio sampling, is easily obtained from modifiying a normal shed construction kit. There may be a few additions that need to be added, such as an audio dampener to prevent the neighbors from complaining, and perhaps some electric and heat sources, but the time spent in a project is well worth it. Having an outdoor studio spurs creativity and gives a sense of separation from distractions.

Anyone with kids will have likely already thought of using a wooden shed as a playhouse for the children. These types of playhouses are excellent and safe places for children to conduct play time, especially with additions such as carpeting, lighting, or plumbing. And when children grow up and the novelty wears out, clubhouse sheds make for great locations for a small get together.

Storage costs can exceed thousands of dollars each year, which is much more than the average shed is going to cost to build and maintain. Over a long enough time span, home owners will be saving a few thousand dollars if they decide to opt for their own shed instead of renting a storage facility. Of course, it's also nice to save gas in the drive to retrieve things from storage.

Home owners with a green thumb have likely dealt with greenhouses before- but constructing greenhouses are more for the professional gardeners and not the average home owner. Using a shed instead allows for easy storage of plants during colder seasons, in which a little extra sunlight from UV lamps and heat will keep plants going strong to see another Spring.

Of course, sheds are still great for storing all types of things that couldn't go inside a house or fit in a garage. Firewood is a great example, especially considering that firewood has bugs in and around it, and not many homeowners want to carry such firewood inside a garage where they may find their way into the household. This is also great for gardening equipment, storage of seasonal decorations, and sports equipment that doesn't quite have room to fit in the house.

Final Thoughts

Obtaining a shed is easy- they can even be delivered to one's doorstep through an online order. Many local retailers also offer construction services, but they are quite easy to put up and most come with instructions on how to do so. For the more crafty individuals, just buying the materials at a store and making the entire thing one's self is also a route to take- albeit more risky and time consuming. - 1432

Growing Freesias

By John Howard

Belonging to the Madder family this genus includes about 200 evergreen shrubs and rarely small trees. Best known representatives are G. jasminoides, or cape jasmine, and G. Veitchii, the florists gardenia, with its waxy, fragrant white flowers and glossy foliage.

The old white freesia, F. alba, is still most desirable. It bears its snow white blooms on stems ten inches long; colored hybrids grow a few inches taller. Under proper conditions the plants remain in bloom for about two weeks, and through successive plantings made two weeks apart, a continuous supply of blooms may be obtained in the greenhouse or house.

During its blooming season, G. jasminoides must be kept thoroughly wet and not allowed to dry out, but in winter it is kept fairly dry. G. Veitchii is an ever blooming gardenia, the most popular hothouse or house plant variety.

It is also summered outside, in a shaded moist location, and kept wet summer and winter. It must be returned to its partly sunny window indoors before frost.

Some gardeners have found that freesia corms are surer to bloom if they are dried thoroughly for about two weeks on a sunny windowsill. When planting, space the corms about two inches apart and press them into the loose soil mixture so that the tips are covered with from " to one inch of soil. Next, place the pots or pans, without watering them, in the shaded window of a cool room where the temperature remains between 45 and 55 F. (7.22 to 12.78 C). Under such conditions root growth will commence promptly. When the sprouts break through, place in a south window. It seems that the colored varieties do better if the temperature is kept at 55 to 60 F(12.78 to 15.56 C)

At the end of the second season the seedlings are usually large enough to be transplanted to their permanent beds six to eight inches apart each way, with the root socks covered to a depth of about two inches. The soil should be kept free from weeds and the plants liberally watered throughout the growing season. For satisfactory growth the plant requires about 75 percent shade during summer.

An abundance of moisture is the most important factor in successfulgardenia culture.Plant containers may be placed in trays or bowls in which water is allowed to stand to a dept equal to the depth of gravel or rubble in the bottom of the flowerpot. If sufficient water is supplied, the plants will be free of bud rot, which causes the buds to drop before flowering. Humidity around the leaves can be kept high by putting a plastic bag over the plant.

Insects which trouble gardenias are thrips, red spider mites and mealy bugs. Mites may be combated by a daily spraying of the foliage with clear water. Thrips and mealy bugs may be handpicked, but will trouble the plant little if it is in robust health. - 1432

How Valentine's Day Became a Tradition

By Joanne Michaels

For centuries now, February 14 has been a day set aside for romance, a special day when candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between lovers. However, the true facts behind the origin of Valentine's Day -- and the saint for whom the day is named --remain a mystery.

Who was this mysterious saint, and why do we celebrate this holiday?

One story suggests that the good Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who served during the third century in Rome in the days of Claudius II. One of Valentine's responsibilities was to perform marriages.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II, Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Because of this, Claudius was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason for this was that married Roman men did not want to leave their wives and families. So, Claudius canceled all marriages and engagements in Rome.

But Valentine would secretly marry young couples that came to him. When Claudius found out about Valentine, he first tried to convert Valentine to paganism. But Valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert Claudius. When Valentine failed, he was stoned and beheaded, supposedly on February 14, 270 A.D.

There is more to the legend. While Valentine was in jail awaiting execution, many young people came to the jail to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. This perhaps is where the idea of sending Valentine's flowers originated. According to the legend, one of these young people was the prison guard's daughter, with whom Valentine became good friends. On the day Valentine was to die, he left his friend a farewell message signed, "From Your Valentine".

Legend has it that Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February to remember the anniversary of Valentine's death.

Although no one knows the true Valentine's Day history, we do recognize February 14 as the date for exchanging symbols of love, and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. We celebrate the day by sending simple gifts such as flowers, chocolates, cards, and poems focused on love. Thus, the legend of St. Valentine continues. - 1432

Bring A Little Bit Of The Nature With A Window Garden

By Keith Markensen

The blues of winter time can be difficult to handle if you are truly a nature lover. Why not attempt to bring a little bit of the nature you are missing indoors with a window garden? There are many beautiful plants that will thrive inside and all you need to do to grow them is provide a sunny window sill. As a matter of fact, many plants do not even need full sunlight to thrive and grow.

You will want to begin by installing a plant hook or two so that you can hang some plants up. Some of the more popular easy to grow hanging plants are the spider plant, boston fern and chenille plant. When buying a plant, it needs to be in a plastic pot. You will want to transfer the plant into a little bit larger of a pot that is more decorative and will give the plant a healthy beginning.

There are a lot of different house plants types that you can have some trouble picking out or narrowing down your choices. Some plants that are easy to take care include African violets, lilies, and ivy. African violets can develop beautiful double flowers, exotic colors and even variegated leaves. Some people fill in every window with African violets and still do not have every enough variety. Peace lilies thrive in indirect sunlight and can have pretty pink or white flowers. Ivy is a favorite on a topiary frame and can easily add interest to your window sill.

While you are choosing plants to fill up your window sill with, do not forget you can even use bulbs. When you are using bulbs, you can experience and early springtime, at least on your window ledge. Great bulbs to chose are daffodils, tulips and fragrant hyacinths. To force bulbs, you need to keep them chilled for a few months in a refrigerator or an unheated room. The next step is planting them and placing them in a window box and watering them. The bulbs should begin to sprout within 4-6 weeks.

For a nontraditional window box garden, try some flowers in the orchid family. Despite their reputation, the plants are not that difficult to take care of. The most common types to use are the phalaenopsis and paphiopedilum for beginners, but the cattleya orchids are also easily grown. Phalaeonopsis and paphiopedilum orchids have beautiful bold flowers and people can usually get them to rebloom easily. Cattleya orchids have small, delicate flowers and are harder to rebloom however.

To take care of the orchids properly, you need a clay pot and a potting soil made especially for orchids, a tray and some pebbles or small stones. You will need to repot your orchids in the clay pot with fresh potting soil and run room temperature water over in the pot for about two minutes and let it drain. The easiest and most common way to kill orchids is leaving them in standing water, so be certain to remove excess water before you place the plant on your window ledge. Put the tray on the window ledge and cover the bottom of it with pebbles. Place the orchid in the tray and once a week, you need to check and make sure the potting mix has dried out. If this happens, water the orchid the same way you did as when you transplanted it.

If however, you are not blessed with a proverbial green thumb when it comes to growing plants, you may still be successful in growing plants inside your home especially growing plants by the window. You need to begin growing the plants in dish gardens or in a terrarium. To take care of a terrarium, basically you need to only neglect it.

To design a terrarium for your window, you need a container with a lid like a fish tank or a an old fashioned gallon sized pickle jar, sand, some potting soil and a few tropical plants or ferns that are smaller in sized. First put about three inches of sand in the bottom of the container and on top of the sand, place a few inches of the potting soil. Next make a small hollowed out area in the soil for each number of plants you are sticking in the terrarium. Put each plant into the container and fill in the area with more of the soil mixture. If the soil and sand are dry, then you will need to add a small bit of water. If the terrarium is in balance and properly maintained you should never have to water it anymore. If you see that there is too much moisture in the terrarium, you need to crack the lid for a bit to allow some of the moisture to escape.

Once there are a few plants growing, it will be a bit easier to wait anxiously for spring time to arrive. - 1432

Aqua Globes - A Non-Bias Review

By Sarah Page

As Seen on TV is notorious for creating products that deliver fixes to everyday problems. However, sometimes their products are too good to be true - and often labeled as scams. Their latest product to receive a lot of hype is the Aqua Globes. This product is the most efficient, effortless way to keep your plants watered all of the time. However, should Aqua Globe be added to the list of products to avoid?

So what are these Aqua Globes? They are little glass ornaments that will water your plants for you. It contains a hand crafted bulb with a long stem attached. This bulb contains the amount of water needed to feed your plant and this stem is injected into the soil. As the soil dries, the stem will drip a little bit of water to keep your plant hydrated all of the time. They claim that the Aqua Globe will hydrate your soil for 2 weeks!

After reading those claims, you may believe that this simple little product is too good to be true. Let's break it down and understand why the Aqua Globe works. When the soil of your plant dries, oxygen is released. This oxygen will then creep up the stem of the Aqua Globe. When this infiltration occurs, space is created from the dropper. Then water escapes and the hole closes again. This is why the Aqua Globe keeps your plant.

Do the Aqua Globes work? From my experience with the product I can say yes. There is a little responsibility required on your part. You must keep the bulb refilled every 2 weeks and you must make sure to not have dirt clogging the end of the stem. You can get around this by poking the hole first with a pencil and then inserting the stem. Other than that, it's self-sustaining.

Another thing that you will have to make sure to ask yourself is if the aesthetics will take away from the look of your plants. I like the way the Aqua Globe looks, but some people may consider it to be an ugly bauble. Be sure that you are content with the appearance.

As far as functionality, the Aqua Globe is unsurpassed. This truly makes having great plants a breeze. I always receive compliments on my plants and many believe that I do a lot to keep them looking so healthy. Truthfully, I am lazy and simply use the Aqua Globe. But hey, who's complaining? - 1432

By Qandishah Brown

Having a home in Austin you certainly don't want to miss out on the good weather that they have. A patio can help you enjoy the perfect days. No matter how large or how small your home is, you put a patio on it just as long as you have some extra space. Putting a patio in your home does not have to be expensive either, in fact this is something that you can do on your own.

Before you get started on building a patio for your home, you will want to know how much space you have first. Go ahead and measure the area where you plan to build. Get a good idea of what the area looks like and sketch it on a piece of paper. This will allow you to plan where to put things as you go along with your project.

Determine what flooring you want on your patio so you can prepare the surface. It may need to be leveled off if you are working on soil, or old cement may need to be removed. You can then add your tiles or any flooring that you want. You can also leave areas where you can add grass or put grass on it entirely. If you want a landscape keep in mind the area you're putting it in.

Adding the plants and landscape can be done after you've set the floor. You can then add a shade on the area or just a portion if you want to have a place to rest. Umbrellas can be an alternative to roofing. Adding a small pond or fountain can even be possible if you want. Lounge chairs and other outdoor furniture add a great touch too.

Making a patio for your home is not the whole story. You have to remember that you will need to maintain this space as well. You can do this by making sure that the plants are tended to regularly and the area is clean. If you make use of tiles on your floor then clean it regularly to avoid getting the grout dirty. You can also hire an expert to do the cleaning for you. - 1432

The Two Kinds Of Insects That Attack Your Garden

By Kent Higgins

As many new gardeners quickly discover, there are two kinds of insects which you may find in your garden. The first are chewing insects that eat holes in the leaves of your plants. These pests include caterpillars, grasshoppers, beetles, snails, slugs, and earwigs. The second type is sucking insects that feed on your garden by pushing their mouths into the plant tissue and sucking out the juices. This type of insect includes aphids, scales, while flies, and mites.

You may assume that sucking insects are tiny (like aphids, for example) and chewing insects large (like caterpillars), but this is not always true. There are many examples of small chewing insects and large sucking bugs.

If you find leaves on your plants that are rolled and twisted out of their normal shape, you can expect to find caterpillars. Some species of caterpillar roll the leaves, and when you unroll the leaf you can expect to find a small green caterpillar inside. Some types of aphids also hide inside rolled leaves. If youre not sure if its an aphid, look for a soft, nearly transparent body, large abdomen, and six legs.

If the leaves of your plants develop transparent sections or trails, leaf miner has probably invaded your garden. This insect tunnels inside the leaves, just under the surface. If you hold a leaf to the light, youll be able to see the trails. On the other hand, if the trails are on the top of the leaf, you probably have slugs.

Depending on the type of insect, you may find bugs on the stems, on the flowers, on the leaves, or hiding underneath the leaves. Be sure to look over all parts of your plants carefully if you suspect insect or pests damage. Insects can hide from view, making it hard to figure out what is damaging your plants. Of course, if you want to make your houseplant healthy again, youll need to find the bugs and get rid of them.

There are many kinds of garden pests that attack your plant in different ways. Many of these are difficult to get rid of once you have them. If you want to get rid of pests like these, youll need to blast your plants with a heavy spray of water. They can hide in unexpected places on your plants, so use a very strong spray of water to get them all. For some bugs, including aphids, youll need to treat the plant with chemicals as well. - 1432

The Best Valentines Day Sayings Idea

By John Yarled

Every year in February, merchants stockpile shelves with hearts, chocolates, bears and everything speckled with red and pink. Flower shops are adorned with dozens of roses in every conceivable color. Men, your job should you choose to accept it, is to seek out the perfect Valentines Day gift. Dont be shy about it. Planning will take a little time but the most original gift is out there for that woman in your life.

Favorite staples for this most important holiday are always chocolate in heart like containers and long stem roses. Its what we call a safe bet. Unfortunately, if you go with roses and chocolate you will not get any extra points for originality.

Want to impression her? Start here and ask yourself, what doe she like? Make notes, write these things down. Keep track in a secret book. Its the little things, all women appreciate. Be sure to pay attention when she drops these little nuggets. But I ask you, who can remember this stuff? If you write it down then you can refer to it and this information is better than gold.

What to look for you ask? Here are a few suggestions. Whats her favorite meal and dont forget the dessert. What is her favorite flower? Don't think that a dozen of roses will cover it. Does she love carnations? Maybe you can add yellow carnations to the usual pink and red for Valentines Day. Use the little details to make a special Valentines Day that she will remember.

Another proven gift is dinner out. Is the favorite restaurant thing been over done? Are you good in the kitchen? Cook her favorite entre. If your cooking isn't an option then here is an incredible idea. Have a chef to come to your home. He will prepare the meal in your and he serves it to the two of you over candle light. Every city has a culinary school and these chefs work inexpensively. Dont forget the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. Fellas, after the chef leaves your night is just beginning.

For some extra romance points, not that you will need it, play her favorite music in the background. Will she be impressed? The mood is set. There is no doubt. Its not just the usual chocolates and roses this year. You just went above and beyond.

Making your gifts original just takes a little tweaking here and there. You dont have to spend like a king. Keep in mind she will tell you things that she likes all the time. As Valentines Day draws closer it becomes more obvious. Dont let on that your paying attention. Subterfuge is always fun. So as you make the arrangements you will have the element of surprise in your favor.

Are you going to fall into the trap and not plan for the day? Other guys mistakenly use the same old routines. Dont be one of those guys. Cheap leftovers are not fun and she will not feel appreciated. And boys its all about the feelings. A little effort means a happy woman and a happy woman means your life get so much easier. - 1432

Aspects Of A Simple To Use Movable Greenhouse

There are a number of related benefits as to why individuals or households would wish to produce their own vegetables. Many of those gains would include a safety factor from knowing how the food was farmed. Additionally, it may be cheaper.

Likewise, in order to draw out the growth season or perhaps get an early start on a growth season, one may care to invest in a movable greenhouse. If so, there are definite features that a portable greenhouse must contain. Those features should include the kind of overlay, ease of fabrication and storage.

Portable Greenhouse Cover

A movable greenhouse is a structure that is obtainable on the market and is designed for those who love gardening. It literally is a structure that holds an environment that is conducive to the development of plants. Specifically, it sustains the proper temperature, protects the plants from detrimental factors such as the wind and maintains the proper moisture.

To see to it that the portable greenhouse furnishes these essential operations, it is crucial that the cover of the movable greenhouse be well built. Consequently, there are certain qualities to the roof that should be incorporated.

Those characters should include the substance that the cover should be made from. Generally, the overlay should be long-lived, provide for sunlight to come through, extend UV protection and minimize condensation. Also, the cover should be constructed so that there is a door and windows that are screened.

In addition, the windowpanes and the doors should have the option of being fixed. This can commonly be accomplished through using lightweight fasteners.

Ease Of Assembly

Another crucial option to look at when selecting a portable greenhouse kit is the simpleness in which the movable greenhouse can be put together. For illustration some portable greenhouses can be removed from the shipping cartons and assembled quickly. Commonly, this process takes less than an hour and needs no tools.

Other easy movable greenhouse kits only necessitate the unit to be taken out of the box and erected by simply pulling up on the frame. Once in position a bar that steadies the unit is placed appropriately. Once the frame is in place the cover is then draped over the frame.

Simplicity Of Storage

In addition to the ease of assembly, an individual who is considering a portable greenhouse may wish to consider storage once the unit is dismantled. Considerations in regards to ease of storage should include the compact size once the unit is taken down and how much space is required for its storage.

Often portable units can quickly be tore down by taking out the bracing bar and depressing any jimmies to allow the unit to break down. When they are down most units simply get placed into their storage bags which double as the cover. - 1432

Early Order for Fresh Flowers

By Harley Hamilton

Throughout the year, it is hard for us to remember every single special day or festival because we all have a lot of work to do. We sometimes lose the sense of time. Some people even forget their own birthday. It is already the worst thing because people around us will remind us. But it is frustrating that we forget the special related to our loved ones. To make sure that our loved ones will receive something, it is a good idea to order the gift earlier. I would take ordering flowers as an example. You may apply the same theory to order whatever you want.

Actually you can order the flowers as early as you want. You can even order them a week in advanced. Most florists provide this kind of service. You can go to the local flower store or online flower delivery florist to choose the flowers. Even though the flowers will be sent later, the florist will ensure that your dearest will receive a bouquet of fresh, colorful and fragrant flowers. Some of them may offer you a money-back guarantee. Thus you need not worry about you will forget the important as well as the quality of the flowers.

When you are choosing flowers for next-day delivery, it is the best idea to choose roses. There are two main reasons. Roses can last for quite a long time. It may be about a week. They are suitable for next-day delivery. Another reason is that roses are the symbol of love. The receiver can easily feel how much you love them.

I would suggest you going to the florist to choose the flowers in person. It ensures that the flowers are fresh and beautiful. But if you are not free to do so, you can order the flowers online. In this way, the quality of the flowers must be the best. You can even decorate the flowers with other things like stuffed animals.

With the next-day flower delivery and online flower store, you will no longer miss any special days. Your dearest will see how organized and tender you are. Indeed if you can remember the special day, it will be much better. - 1432

The Real Facts about Organic Health Food

By KC Kudra

Maybe you have noticed organic food in the supermarket and wondered what was so special about it. Organic health food is more expensive than conventional food but why is this? Does it taste different and is it better for you?

A Guide to Organic Health Food

Organic produce is not grown or processed in the same way as conventional food. It is never exposed to artificial fertilizers, conventional pesticides, industrial waste, human waste, and ionizing radiation or food additives. Conventional chickens are sometimes given tiny quantities of arsenic in their feed to fight parasites. Arsenic has been linked to cancer in humans. Organic animals are not given anything like that and are raised in clean, parasite free environments.

Organic livestock is reared without growth hormones or antibiotics. It is not genetically modified. Organic animals are raised on a healthy diet and are fed organic grains, which were grown in a pesticide and chemical free soil.

Organic chickens are raised in a stress free environment, in a humane manner. They get daily access to fresh air and sunshine and are allowed to roam outside in a safe and clean area. They have lots of room to move. Do not confuse organic chickens with free-range chickens though. Although free-range chickens can roam outside, the conditions are not always clean, safe or stress free. They can be fed anything the farmer decides to give them and they can be administered antibiotics or drugs.

Do Many People Eat Organic Health Food?

Organic health food was once only available in farmer's markets or small stores because organic farms have always been small, family run farms. Since the early 1990s however, organic food production has increased by about 20% a year in both developing and developed nations.

In 2002, $9 billion worth of organic produce was sold in the United States. This was also the year that the National Organic Standards list was issued, which was a list containing guidelines that farmers had to follow in order to be allowed to label their produce as organic. Since April 2008, organic produce has accounted for between 1 and 2% of worldwide food sales. The British love organic health food and they import a lot of it because their farmers cannot keep up with the high level of demand.

Does Organic Food Taste Different?

The difference in flavor between meat from an organic chicken and a battery chicken is clear. There is less difference in flavor between organic chicken and free-range chicken but there is still a difference nonetheless.

Organic chickens are allowed room to roam about, so they have used muscles rather than wasted ones. They eat a better diet, have a better life, and are allowed to grow at a natural rate so it is clear that they will have a better flavor and texture. Organic farming is more labor intensive and the livestock feed is more expensive, so you should expect to pay more if you want to eat organic produce.

Imagine making a boneless chicken recipe with rich and tasty organic boneless chicken pieces and organically grown vegetables in an organic tomato based sauce. Organic vegetables are richer in both smell and flavor than conventionally grown vegetables. This would be a great recipe for the whole family and it is nice to know you are watching their health too. - 1432

The Perfect Delivery: Sending Flowers Works Every Time

By Laurie Peters

No matter what time of year it is, sending flowers is a great way to stay in touch with family, friends, and other loved ones. Many companies are out there to help make it easier to give the gift of flowers, allowing you to fully customize your gifts and choose specific shipping dates without ever leaving home. In such a busy world, that is convenience that's necessary!

The opportunity to send a bouquet can come about so frequently and many may be random, but some opportunities should be scheduled like clockwork. Every mother loves the excitement of having a beautiful arrangement delivered to her doorstep on or before Mother's day, letting her know she is appreciated and in the thoughts of her loved ones. And wives, girlfriends, or anyone you're sweet on, will know they are a treasured part of your life when their special delivery arrives on Valentines day.

In addition to these mainstream holidays, there are many other occasions that exist that give you the perfect excuse to send a beautiful floral bouquet to someone in your family. While birthdays, retirements, and anniversaries are the most logical, there are many other times when a floral gift can be ideal. Certain milestones, career achievements, or academic accomplishments can be augmented by the presentation of a beautiful bouquet. If you are recognizing someone from across the miles, this is a chance to let them know that they are on your mind!

Whether you are ordering a bouquet intended for Valentines Day or a plant to recognize your friends promotion at work, most onsite and online florists have stock floral arrangements that have been pre-created with specific events in mind. For example, many Valentines choices will feature red roses; some Easter varieties will include lilies. Many places will also suggest certain flowers during a particular month, as some will be in season at one time and unavailable at another. Furthermore, some types of foliage are associated with a particular time of year, such as poinsettias during Christmas or daisies in the summer.

Flowers do need a bit of attention as they are fragile and may not last too long. They need to have their water refreshed from time to time or else it will start to smell a bit rotten. Some people may have allergies so one needs to be careful about knowing if this present may induce a negative physical reaction. These days, men may appreciate receiving flowers as much as women for similar occasions, but one should be sensitive to those males who might find it a bit embarrassing to receive them publicly.

In addition to sending flowers, there are new and creative other options these days to send for that special occasion. Chocolates are a thoughtful gift as well as teddy bears, pajamas, popcorn, balloons, candles, gift baskets and gift certificates. Let your imagine be your guide!

Overall, sending a floral gift can be as personally rewarding for the sender as it can be for the receiver. A vase full of pretty posies is a luxury we dont often afford ourselves, so when we get some " especially via a surprise delivery " it can be a wonderful occurrence. Ultimately, the sender can be rest assured that, every time their gift recipient looks at the vase or catches a whiff of the blossoms, they will be thought of. And the gesture of having the flowers sent and delivered is one that will linger for quite some time. - 1432

How to Make a Pet Rat Hammock

By Catherine Smith

It is very easy to make your rat his own hammock. All you need to do is to get a large piece of soft, fleecy material. This could be bought from a material shop very cheaply, or could even be from an old jumper or blanket.

Cut a square of the fleecy material. The size will depend on the size of your rats, but generally it is good to go for a larger size than necessary, so that your rat can really relax. An average size rat could have a nice large hammock using these dimensions:

30 x 38 cm (12 x 15")

A very big rat could have an extra large hammock using these dimensions:

38 x 45 cm (15 x 18"). This size would also be good for ferrets. You then need to make a hole in each of the four corners of the material. Through these holes you can thread a sturdy piece of string and tie it onto the cage roof, or corner of the cage. When it is all secure place your rat into the hammock with some soothing words of encouragement. You will soon find that every time you look in the cage your rats are all piled up in the hammock snoozing away.

Of course if you do not feel like making a hammock it is just as easy to buy one. They are available from most good pet stores as well as online. They come in all kinds of shapes and colours and your rats will be sure to love them.

Why not make a hammock today. Your rat will thank you for it. - 1432

Enhance The Accessibility Of Your Landscape With Garden Steps

By Kent Higgins

A beautiful way to ad to your outdoor space and landscaping is to incorporate steps into the design. These are as important as trees, lighting, and other things that tend to be the focus of landscape design. There are many materials that can be used in order to make your steps appear natural and built into the design itself, melding in with the other elements in the design.

The dimensions of outdoor steps are usually the same as indoor ones, though sometimes the treads are wider or deeper than they would be indoors, to make a more gradual lateral movement. If the steps are to be used often, though, this should be kept to a minimum to avoid injury and problems with using them. Remember that the key to good step design is all in the design here. Make sure there is a slope to the tread, sloping forwards so that water will run off the steps easily.

A good foundation is key to step security and longevity as well. Concrete is the most popular material for steps and requires an extensive and strong foundation if it is to last very long. Simple wooden treads made up of half-buried logs require the least amount of foundation work, but will need to be replaced fairly often as they rot away and split. A good foundation is also needed for block steps, made from concrete or other materials.

Using pre-cast blocks eliminates the need for forms, as with poured concrete, but ads the problem of drainage as the spaces between the blocks must be filled in to keep the foundation from washing away and the treads from spreading or dislodging. Building steps from blocks and then spreading a thin layer of concrete over the top is a popular method of accomplishing both tasks.

Brick steps are similar to blocks, but require more skill to put into place. Because of their many joints, brick steps are generally weaker than concrete or block steps, but they can be very beautiful if laid out correctly. The bricks can be arrayed in patterns to please the eye and match the landscape as a whole.

Finding stone for stone steps is the hardest part of putting together this natural, beautiful type of step design. When stones must be purchased, then the stone steps will become the most costly form of constructing garden step design, but can be one of the most attractive. You can build stone steps without masonry bonding if you carefully select the stones to fit together well and lay a good foundation for them to sit upon.

Informal-appearing wooden steps can be made for steps as well, providing a raised platform for people to walk upon above the landscape. They require regular maintenance to keep in good condition, but are otherwise a great way to ad steps that are natural and low-cost at the same time.

Whatever your step choice, your design can greatly enhance your landscape's appeal and how easily it is accessed. Great steps can make for a great landscape! - 1432

Estimating How Much Food for a Party the Easy Way

By KC Kudra

When you are planning a party, cooking should be part of the fun rather than a chore. However, a lot of people manage to get themselves into a panic and worry that they have bought too little food or way too much. They worry that their guests will not enjoy their food or their recipes will not turn out well.

Knowing How Much Food for a Party

Unfortunately, there is no scientific formula for working out how much food for a party. It is more of an art and the more parties you cater for, the more you will be able to estimate the right food amounts. Here are a few tips that will allow you to estimate how much food for a party and will help you to relax rather than panic!

First of all, who is coming to your party? Is it mainly adults or will you need to make some child-friendly dishes too? How long will your party go on for? You would need more food for an afternoon barbecue, for example, that you would for an after dinner cocktail party.

Make more of the dishes that you think will be popular. Nearly everybody likes boneless chicken recipes, for example, so make plenty of those because there will be other dishes, such as seafood recipes, which not everybody likes or is able to eat.

The more different choices you offer the less of each one your guests will have. Therefore, if you have twenty things to choose from, each guest will want to taste every dish that he or she likes and will only take a small bit of each one.

You can estimate the amount of food required by working out how many guests you have and how much of each food they will eat. Remember to round your estimations up, not down. It is infinitely better to have some food left over than run out of things to eat halfway through the celebrations!

Have some bulk items, such as nuts or olives for a cocktail party or bread for a sit-down dinner party, which can fill people up if the other food selections are running low and which people will nibble on before starting on the main dishes.

Portion Sizes for Party Food

Six bites per guest is a good allowance for an appetizer. Seven ounces of meat or fish, an ounce and a half of grains, an ounce of undressed salad, five ounces of potatoes and four ounces of vegetables per person is about right for the main meal. For dessert, allow everyone five ounces of ice cream, four ounces of creamy dessert like mousse or a slice of cake or pie. These measures are just to give you an idea because some people have a big appetite and others have a small one.

Good to Know Party Food Tips

* Avoid repeating the main ingredient if you are having a dinner party. Do not serve a boneless chicken appetizer followed by a boneless chicken main course, for example.

* Have both warm and cold foods on offer if you are serving a buffet meal.

* Combine a variety of textures, such as crisp potato cakes with soft dips.

* Make sure you have a good variety of colors, so the food on your buffet table or dining table looks attractive. - 1432

Ways To Avoid Your Plant From Disease

By Kent Higgins

House plants are actually living organisms and they can be attacked by other living organisms that can produce damage and diseases. Listed here are the most common symptoms along with tips on how to treat the diseases they cause.

Your plants might be covered with a powdery substance that can be wiped away easily with your hand or a soft cloth. That is a sign of powder mildew a very common plant disorder. The powder can be white or brown in color and is usually on top of the leaves where it can be seen with the naked eye. The disorder occurs more often when your plants has gotten too little sunlight or the soil has been kept too dry.

This condition can be easily treated, all you have to do is remove the powdery substance with a soft cloth. However, for more complete treatment and long term protection, use a mildewcide. Place the plant in a location where it can get more sun exposure and keep it watered properly.

Brown spotting on the leaves can be a sign of improper watering, which may make leaf spot fungus. Figure out how much water and when to give it, for your particular plant. Give the plant a bit more sun exposure and moving it close to a light source is a good idea. There is rarely any need for further treatment.

Spots are usually concentric shaped rings, in this case, they are mostly likely due to a fungus. Remove any dead leaves and allowing for good air circulation around the plant. To ensure that water spots do not remain on the leaves for long periods of time. This will promote the growth of fungus, use a fungicide.

Leaf spotting can also be the result of bacteria.

Bacterial spots on leafs can appear as a yellow-hued halo and the spots will get bigger to the point where they form a blob whenever the plant is continually wet. Drier conditions make brown spots and then the leaves become somewhat speckled. Keep the plants warm enough as recommended for their species and give them plenty of room to grow and spread. Treat with a bacteriacide when necessary.

Another common problem from over watering houseplants, is stem rot. The outer leaves of the plant will not hold tight to the plants and will possibly even fall off when touched. The outer edges of the leaves become yellow over time. To care for wilted houseplants applying a fungicide for quick relief but the only long term solution is to discover what type of watering pattern will work best for the type of plant you have.

Root rot is another problem that is cause by having too much moisture in the soil. Bacteria will thrive all the time becoming harmful to leavees and invade the roots and eventually work its way up the plant. The leaves will begin to be discolored and you can try easing up on the water, but few plants ever recover

To lower the risk of plants becoming damaged by disease, begin with disease free plants. The best way to do this is to buy from a reputable dealer only. Use sterile soil and not just old dirt from around your yard. Early and often treatment are also important and you should not let these problems go unchecked. - 1432

Shopping List for Your Pet Rat

By Catherine Smith

Contrary to popular belief pet rats are not pets that you can just keep in a cage and forget about. They are highly intelligent, active, fun and very cute little critters. They need plenty of things to keep them occupied when you are not around. They enjoy playing with toys with you and on their own. It is also very important to have more than one rat, so that they can keep each other company during the day.

So here is your ratty shopping list. First of all we have the basics:

* Large rat cage. Make sure the gaps are not too wide, or your rat may decide to go walkabout.

* water bottle

* Food bowl and snack bowl (so you can separate sweet and savoury)

* Bedding (I use old newspapers and shredded paper from work).

* Rat Food - a basic cereal/block which you can then add tasty snacks to, to spice things up.

But here are some more exciting things for your rat:

* Rat hammock - Rats love to snuggle up in a bright, fleecy hammock. You can make one, or buy one.

* Igloo - Rats must have somewhere to hide away when the world gets a bit too much. Put some comfy bedding inside to make a little sanctuary for ratty.

* Kong Toy - Just use the ferret Kong toy. Fill it with some yummy rat friendly food and it is a great way to keep your rat entertained when you are out.

* Rat litter tray - yes rats can be toilet trained and quite easily. You can get a little corner tray to go in the corner of the cage, or just use a shoe box. Put some of your rat's poop on the tray and place him in there. He will soon get the message. It will make cleaning out a lot easier.

* Chew toys - Rats love to chew and it is very good for their teeth. You can buy fruit flavoured wooden chew toys that rats love.

* Delicious food - Rats love all kinds of food. You can try various fruits, as well as cooked pasta and rice and even eggs.

* Rat training - You can add variety to your rat's day by training him for 10 minutes a day. You can teach your rat to come when called, clap and even roll over. All it takes is kindness and patience.

* Rat harness and lead - An interesting idea if your rat wants to see the outside world.

* Love. Yup that is the main thing. Give your rat a whole lot of love and he will be a very happy ratty. - 1432

7 Reasons Why Pet Rats Rock

By Catherine Smith

1. Rats are very intelligent animals. They will often find ways to outsmart people who set traps, by taking the food without getting caught. Pet rats can be trained to come when called and do heaps of tricks.

2. Rats are very friendly and tend to love people and even other larger animals, like dogs. My little rat Summer loves to snuggle up with Charlie the dog. Rats like to sit on peoples' shoulders and chatter into their ears.

3. Rats are ticklish. If you tickle their bellies they will laugh a very high pitched laugh that can be picked up by the equipment people use to listen to bats. How cute!

4. Rats are adorable. I love wild rats too, but pet rats come in all kinds of colours. You can even get Dumbo rats that have adorable large ears and silky rats that have the softest fur. Average brown rats have intelligent looking eyes and very cute faces.

5. Rats are not picky eaters. They like to try a bit of everything and always like to sample a little of your leftovers. Thinking up their meals is fun, as they can have their cereal/block as a base and more exciting things as a side dish.

6. Rats love to hoard things. When they find an attractive piece of fluff or paper. They will carry it in their mouths and hop back to their homes like a little kangaroo.

7. Rats are very sociable. They love to play both with humans and with other rats. It is important to get more than one rat (of the same sex), so that they can snuggle together at night in their ratty hammock and play together in the day. They will still bond with you just as much.

Look at all those reasons to love rats. Perhaps you should give them a chance after all? - 1432

Should You Use a Trimmer or Edger on Your Lawn?

By Keith Markensen

While a lawnmower is essential to caring for your lawn, a trimmer or edger is also important. The reason for this is that many lawnmowers cannot reach areas of your grass next to walls, patios, or trees. To make your lawn look neat and tidy, use an edger to finish the job.

It can be hard to choose a type of trimmer or edger. Edgers have a traditional design with dual blades and a long wooden handle. Although they work quite well for the job, they have an old-fashioned design. They require no gas, and are lightweight. You'll need to keep the blades clean and sharp, but they can do your edging in just a few minutes.

On the downside, they require a lot of effort for you to push them along. If you'll end up with an aching back or sore wrists, this type of edger may not be right for you. If this is the case, try upgrading to an electric trimmer.

Electric trimmers are actually quite inexpensive. Plus, they are easy to use. They remove the longer grass by slicing it off by a quickly-moving plastic string. The string is easy to replace and costs only a few dollars. It will last at least several weeks, if not months, depending on how much you use the trimmer.

Electric trimmers have several other features that manual edgers do not have. You can use them at different angles and in tight areas that even manual edgers cannot reach. For example, if you have grass growing next to a shed or other building, it can be difficult to use your manual edger to cut this grass, but an electric trimmer will work. The same goes for grass around a large rock, or a lawn bordered by a scalloped edge. Electric trimmers will not damage the bricks, and will easily remove the grass.

A third style of edger to consider uses a small gasoline-powered motor. Unlike an electric edger, there is no cord in the pathways to get in the way, so you can take them far into the yard even to the areas near your brick patio, where there's no outlet nearby. Using a gasoline-powered edger eliminates the need for a long extension cord snaking through your yard. Plus, they typically have more power, so they can handle thick brush or weeds better than electric edgers. However, gas-powered trimmers are noisier and heavier than electric models, and many of them are more expensive than either the electric or manual trimmers.

As you can see, there are many choices in lawn edgers and trimmers. The model you choose should depend on your preferences as well as your budget. A manual model is well-suited to a small yard without a lot of obstacles, while an electric trimmer is a good choice for medium-sized yards. Gasoline trimmers are a good choice for larger yards with obstacles to cut around. Because edgers are an investment, be sure to choose wisely, and pick a high-quality model that will last for years. - 1432

Memories of Jenny with Her Pretty Dolls

By Chris Jensen

One thing I remember most about Jenny when she was still in her very young years is that she is very fond of dolls. You will always catch her grabbing dolls of other young girls and then would try to own them. And whenever her birthday comes, or even Christmas season is up and coming back then, all you will hear from her is that she wants dolls and nothing else.

Her parents love her so much so have given her what she wanted - dolls. On her 4th birthday, her parents gave Jenny her first ever doll, an American Girl Doll with a name of Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was in a rich berry-red dress made from a brocade fabric when Jenny got her. The dress looked very nice to Jenny most especially that it was highlighted by a contrasting gold panel then on. Not to mention that there was also delicate cream-colored lace with a metallic gold detail that spilled down the bodice and trimmed the sleeves. There were also the ruby-colored faux jewels that sparkled against the lace and a cream lace cap with a berry-red ribbon which have really lighted up not only Elizabeth's look but also Jenny's face.

Jenny took care of Elizabeth very well and her parents have seen this so they gave her another American Girl Doll on Christmas day following her 4th birthday. They bought Samantha as a Christmas present to her. Samantha was just a perfect doll for Christmas as she was wearing then on a velveteen coat with faux trim. She was wearing as well a wide brimmed hat with matching velveteen band and black knitted mittens. She looked very gorgeous back then. Not to mention that she was also holding flowers. Jenny felt so delighted having Samantha in her hands; her second doll.

Before Jenny turned 5, her parents got some financial problems so can't afford to give her another doll present so instead just gave her a simple birthday bash. Jenny wasn't upset at all as Elizabeth and Samantha were already there around.

Christmas time came but still her parents was in a financial trouble so still can't give Jenny present. But Jenny as a loving and understand kid she was, didn't still mind not having another doll but instead just took care of her two dolls, Elizabeth and Samantha.

On her 6th birthday, she wasn't already expecting any doll but then surprisingly on the morning of her birthday, she woke up having another doll beside her in her bed. She ran as fast as she could to her parents' room and then thanked them by kissing them on both cheeks on and on.

Name of the doll she got on her 6th birthday was Julie. She was in a casual dress and got a doll trunk wardrobe. Julie got a bag, hairbrush, and accessories. Julie seemed like perfect for travel. Jenny was so happy back then having Julie, another addition to her pretty doll collection.

Now that Christmas time is again up and coming, then her 7th birthday follows, Jenny is still hoping to get additional pretty dolls. But if her parents can't afford them for some reasons, for sure Jenny will understand. Most especially now that she already have pretty dolls in her care - Elizabeth, Samantha and Julie. - 1432

Not watering your plants enough kills more plants then any pests do. But, over watering is one of the most common mistakes an owner can make. If the soil on top of the plant looks and feel dry, we react by watering the plant generously. In this eagerness to help our plant, we may actually be doing more damage. You need to know how much water your plant requires, when and monitor it carefully, this can solve this problem.

Keep Your Barbeque Grill Clean So It Lasts

By Gerald Beatty

A common reason why BBQ grills don't last as long as expected is because many people aren't aware of how to clean their grill properly. Many times, it just boils down to being lazy if you don't clean up your BBQ after each use.

Instead of scrubbing off the cooked-on food remnants on the grill, many of us take one look at the mess and decide that we can always do it tomorrow. You might have the best of intentions, but not all of us do a good job of keeping such promises. So we end up just putting away or covering up the dirty BBQ grill, complete with charred food remnants and pooled grease.

The next thing we know, surprise, surprise, the barbeque gas grill no longer works properly. And the most disgusting part of this whole situation is that if you use the grill again without cleaning it, it will have a very negative effect on the flavor and aroma of your food.

Since replacing a BBQ grill can be quite costly, we should all learn to be more careful when it comes to maintaining a grill. It's not difficult to clean the BBQ grill after using it. In fact, it takes only a few minutes to clean the grill, air dry it and it put it away.

Here are some easy steps that should help you keep your barbeque grill clean and functional.

Your first task is to get rid of the bits of food that have been burned black while cooking and are sticking to the grill. Once your grill has cooled down completely, use a stiff brush to scrub the interior; you can buy brushes made specifically for this use. The inside of the grill needs to be cleaned carefully. Avoid chemicals and even plain old soap, because the residue will remain and contaminate your nice juicy steak the next time around.

When cleaning up the grate, you should remove it from the BBQ grill before washing it with soap and warm water. Don't use bleaching agents or harsh chemicals to remove any food substances that may cling to the grate.

To remove stubborn food particles, soak the grate for a few minutes and then vigorously brush it to remove the charred bits of food. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any traces of soap. Then allow the grate to air dry before placing it back in the grill.

Make a habit of covering up your BBQ grill or putting it in a sheltered location so it doesn't begin to rust. - 1432

Eliminate Those Nasty Vegetable Garden Pests

By Sarah Duke

Any vegetable gardener will tell you that their worst annoyance is insects and pests. The majority of bugs are more of a nuisance than willfully destructive. But if you find a garden pest devouring your harvest, you're not going to be too happy.

Among the ugliest garden pests is the tomato hornworm. It is a fat, white and green worm with a big horn that resembles a stinger. It can be plucked from the plant using gloved hands and submerged in soapy water to kill it. Alternatively, you could spray the tomato hornworm with stomach poison insecticide, neem oil, or Bacillus thuringiensis.

Thrips are partial to a variety of plants. You'll know they've been there by the random white marks you see on the leaves. To get rid of them, use a hose to wash off the bugs and then spray on some contact poison.

Snails and slugs will devour the leaves on your plants, and they always leave a slimy trail as evidence. You can buy bait to attract and kill them, but you can achieve the same thing with a shallow dish of beer; they'll be drawn to it and drown.

Those plump white worms that you see in the ground are most likely grubs. When grubs attack your plants they start to droop and their growth will be stunted. They can be held in check by adding milky spore to the soil. Grubs eventually grow into beetles, which you can rid of with stomach poison insecticide.

Cutworms tend to attack a plant's stem at the base. Putting a paper collar around the plants is really the only way to keep them away.

A corn earworm will attack your corn cobs and make a meal of the kernels. Likewise, a tomato fruitworm consumes the insides of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Choose an insecticide targeted to the elimination of earworms.

Borers are found in many vine plants with thick stems. The only way to eliminate them is to cut them out of the plant. You might end up having to pull up the plant and destroying it if you find a borer near the base of the plant. You can usually get rid of them with insecticide.

Another annoying pest is the beetle, which likes to eat the leaves on your plants. You have to get rid of them because they can do a tremendous amount of damage to your garden. You can either spray them with insecticide or just pick them off the plants.

Aphids are a common sight in any vegetable garden. Usually you'll spot them as a group of small bugs in a variety of colors. Insecticide soap or neem oil gets rid of aphids. - 1432

Gardening With Flowering Cactuses

By Thomas Fryd

Most people don't think of flowers when they think of cactus plants, but many are great flowering plants that can ad some splash and pizazz to any home or garden. Even the showiest of orchids can be usurped by the beauty of a flowering cactus. The odd mix of harsh plant and beautiful flower really sets it off from other plants and makes for an intriguing look.

Obviously, with cacti, it's important to be very careful when you handle them or smell their flowers. While the fragrance is sweet, the thorns aren't. Be careful with them.

One of the most popular flowering cacti to grow is the crab cactus. It has bright flowers that give off a lot of color and young stems that are flat and resemble the claws of a crab (thus the name). As they get older, they become round and woody in their look, but keep their beautiful flowers with each bloom. Using equal parts sand, loam, leaf-mould and broken charcoal yields beautiful and healthy plants.

The orchid cactus is another favorite, having beautiful red flowers that bloom in the summer. The big flowers can be quite huge, up to six inches around. The colors are two shades of red: scarlet and carmine, giving a deep hue and strong look. The cactus itself will get to about three feet high, so it's quite large compared to it's smaller companions in many settings. The Easter or Spring cactus is another sight to behold, with symmetrical flowers that open very wide.

Cacti have another advantage over other plants too: they're much easier to care for. Their nutritional and water needs are marginal and easily taken care of. The trick is to set them into the right conditions to start with, both soil and pot size, and then water occasionally and ad nitrogen once in a while. The soil should be dry most of the time between waterings, though an increase in watering during blooming season is a good idea. High light levels will induce faster and larger blooms as most cacti are happier with lots of sunlight. Just be sure not to overdo the sun or the buds will droop and will flower weakly or not at all.

Care of cactus plants to promote the right flowering is achieved when the timing is right and receive signals from their environment as to when this is. If you grow cacti as house plants, you'll need to artificially give these signals in order to promote flowering in a faster and healthier way. A few short days with cooler temperature (less sunlight, lower temperature) followed by longer days with more moderate temperatures will trick the cactus into thinking it's spring. Eventually, the plant will flower as the temperature rises.

In a greenhouse, it may be necessary to remove the cactus to the outdoors or into the home for cooler conditions to be had. A few even put their cacti into a refrigerator, though this is extreme.

Easy care and enjoyment are two of the best reasons to grow cactus plants and flowering cacti are both beautiful and unique. - 1432

Improve Your Soil the Old Fashioned Way with Seaweed Fertilizer

By Sarah Duke

As long as humans have planted and harvested, fertilizer has played a role in agricultural production. In the search for ways to improve the quality and quantity of the crop, countless types of fertilizers have been tried. Some have been more successful than others. As strange as it may seem, seaweed fertilizer is among the most valued ways to improve soil quality.

Seaweed fertilizer has been in use in coastal regions throughout the world for hundreds of years. In England, in the Channel Islands, there is actually a trade specifically dedicated to harvesting and drying seaweed. It is subsequently used for various purposes including soil fertilization.

Seaweed was also popular as a fertilizer in Ireland. Farmers would lift the soil in rows, lay down seaweed and then replace the soil. It's lost some of its popularity today, but it was commonly used for growing potatoes back then. Even today, the coastal industries of Ireland harvest huge quantities of seaweed and kelp.

Seaweed is a remarkably effective way to improve the soil quality of a garden. The reason behind this is that the large bodies of water that are home to seaweed contain every element known to mankind. Seaweed absorbs these elements and passes them along to the soil when you add it to your garden.

Environmentally conscious gardeners are particularly attracted to seaweed fertilizer. The reason for this is that it's an organic product derived from plants, and can enhance the soil in cooperation with other forms of natural fertilizer. There's no downside to it as there is with so many of the chemical laden commercial fertilizers. There are somewhat questionable ingredients contained in many of these products. As well, the production of these products releases a considerable amount of pollutants into the air.

Similar to mulch, you can put seaweed fertilizer right on top of the soil. Lay it in between and around your plants. It tends to break down quite quickly.

It can also be added to your compost bin. It will add nutrients and help to break down the other ingredients in the mix. You can also make it into a tea, either using the liquid or powder forms. You then mist this concoction onto the leaves to provide another source of nutrients.

Seaweed has a long and fruitful history in gardens throughout the world. If you live near the sea, you might be lucky enough to pick it up on a nearby beach. But for the rest of us, a visit to the local garden center is almost as easy. Ask for kelp meal or other types of seaweed fertilizers. And while you're there, ask them to give you some tips on how to add it to your garden to give it new life. - 1432

How To Plant Several Plants At A time

By Thomas Fryd

If you plan to grow more than one or two plants at a time, it's likely that most of them will fall under the category of "foliage." These may not be as showy as flowering plants, but they are the base that make those flowers look so good. These are easily grown and are not hard to take care of if you know a few simple things about them.

First and foremost, foliage plants are the backbone and basis for almost every garden or flower arrangement. This is because without the green and plant-filled background, all you have are flowers and dirt. They usually are not season-specific, showing green all year round. This makes them ideal ground cover as well. There are literally thousands of varieties grown today.

Your choice of foliage will be determined by climate, space, size and shape of leaves, and the overall size of the plant. Once you know these things, you can pick some plants and begin planting them. Whether it's in containers, on a patio, or in a garden, you'll find that foliage plants are relatively easy to put into the soil and even easier to care for.

A tremendously popular foliage plant is the rubber plant (aka "rubber tree") that seems to be ubiquitous to very home and apartment. These plants are very easy to care for and require little maintenance or work on your part. Just pick the proper-sized pot, water occasionally, and ad nutrients rarely and the rubber plant will thrive. Many foliage plants are similar in their care and needs.

Sansevieria is a widely known plant, usually called the "Snake Plant." It lives and grows easily at room temperature and requires almost as little maintenance as the rubber plant. They are beautiful and need little sun to do well. You can propagate this plant by making cutting of the stems and allowing them to sprout roots in water.

Another popular species is known as the "Wandering Jew," or Tradescantia or Zebrina. These are smaller versions of the same plant, which have long and narrow pointed leaves. They are very decorative and hardy and are popular basket plants that can add a splash when you are building a container garden or building garden steps outdoors. They hang well and enjoy partial sun and warm temperatures indoors or in shaded garden areas. They sprout purple and white flowers every spring.

All of these plants and many, many more are great indoor foliage that can ad a splash of life to any room or become the background for a great flower box. - 1432

Keeping Your Fruit Tree Pest Free

By Kent Higgins

Protecting your fruit trees from pests in the summer time can be frustrating and seem to be an impossible task to accomplish. Doing so without pesticides or chemicals is even more so. Many people are scared by the prospect of using chemical pesticides, believing that they will infect the tree and its fruit. If done properly, however, this is rarely the case. You can get rid of pests using chemicals and not infect the tree or its fruit in the process.

If you're using chemicals, you're likely using a pump (atomizing) sprayer or a hose-mounted bottle sprayer. In either case, your technique is what will keep your trees healthy and safe.

Using a pump sprayer, you can more accurately determine the mix of chemicals and where the spray will land. On the down side, however, you won't be able to spray as far and are more likely to get it on yourself. So wearing proper clothing that covers your body and a mask will keep you from inhaling the spray. You'll also need a ladder and more maneuverability as you'll be required to be much closer to the spray areas.

Using a hose-end sprayer, you will have longer range and wider coverage-including the top of the tree. However, you won't have the accuracy and the mixture is totally dependent on water pressure, which you can't easily regulate. The chemicals you purchase to use this way are much more concentrated and need to be well-diluted in order to be safe. This means good water pressure. So if you're going to spray and your water pressure seems low, wait and see if it improves later in the day or earlier in the morning.

When you actually spray with these devices, the object is the same: even coverage over all surfaces. The spray should not be dripping from the leaves, but every surface should get an application. A ladder can help you get to the harder-to-reach areas of the tree. Apply the spray evenly, moving it back and forth so you don't hit the same spot twice.

With neem tree and other larger trees, spraying of insecticide from the inside to the outside (trunk to leaf) is best and will ensure best coverage. Starting from the top and working down, you'll be able to see where the spray has dripped down and avoid re-covering those areas. This also allows you to methodically cover all areas of the tree without question as to whether you've done a spot or not.

Once you've completed spraying, be sure to completely clean off your equipment to get any residues off of them and then thoroughly clean your clothes and yourself to make sure you've washed it off completely. Wash your clothes separately and in a small load so as to get as much water into the wash basin as possible, ensuring the chemicals are thoroughly rinsed away.

Finally, water the base of the tree and around it on the ground in a parameter slightly larger than the tree's spread. Soak the ground thoroughly to make sure all the chemicals which dripped down are heavily diluted. This keeps them from absorbing too readily into the tree itself, thus keeping your tree and its fruit healthy. - 1432

Planting A Lawn From Seeds

By Keith Markensen

It can be hard to grow a thick, dark green lawn, but there are a few tips to follow. When seeding a lawn, fall is undoubtedly the best time. September is the perfect time to begin your lawn, because the hottest weather will be over. You could also start in early spring, but there needs to be good root growth before the hot summer weather arrives. However, they will be competing with crab grass, which grows quickly in the summer months, as well as high heat and inadequate water.

When planting your grass seeds, keep in mind that the seeds are relatively small, so they should not be planted deeply into the ground. As long as the ground is relatively moist, the seeds only need partial covering with soil. You should use about 4 pounds of seeds for 1,000 square feet of lawn. Don't try to make up for low-quality seeds by using more of them; this will just increase competition between them.

When planting your seeds, use a mechanical spreader if you can. To ensure even coverage, you should spread half the seeds in one direction, the rest in the other direction. That way, you will not miss any spots. When you're done, rake the seeds lightly. You may also want to cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil or compost, but this is not absolutely necessary.

If you're trying to plant a lawn on a slope, this will need special treatment. If it rains, the seeds are likely to be washed away. You can cover them with straw to keep them in place, but remove the straw as soon as they sprout. Or you can cover the new seedlings with an open mesh burlap, cheesecloth, or garden mesh. These will keep the soil intact and protect the new grass. It should be removed by the time the grass is half an inch long.

Rainfall is best for new grass, but if you have decided on sowing grass seeds during dry weather, you'll need to water for the seeds to germinate. Be sure to use a fine mist so that you won't create puddles. Water in the morning, before the hottest part of the day. Especially once the grass seeds sprout, be sure to adequately water them. You can use a sprinkler, but don't leave it on the lawn until the soil becomes too wet. After you water, the water should reach down about 5 inches into the soil.

As your grass begins to grow, you may wonder when it's time to begin the chore of mowing. You can start moving when the tallest blades of grass are 2 inches long, but don't cut the grass shorter than an inch and a half.

If you're considering tearing out an old lawn to replace it with a new and healthy lawn, this may be a wise decision. However, there are also some things you should do before planting the lawn. If your lawn is growing poorly because the soil is too hard, plow it and add compost. You can also try aerating the top layer of soil, or adding 4 pounds of plant food for every 100 square feet of lawn. If your lawn is mossy, you should improve the drainage before planting your new lawn. - 1432

How to Respond to Sympathy Flowers

By Amy Nutt

It can be difficult to think about what your responsibilities are when you are in the midst of a crisis, but chances are you`ll still want to respond appropriately to things like sympathy flowers and letters. When someone has taken the time to select something beautiful to send along and let you know that they`re sorry for what you`re going through, it`s always nice to acknowledge this.

Displaying Sympathy Flowers

One very nice way to make sure people know that their gift is appreciated is to display the flowers. You can do this in your home, a hospital room or even on a gravesite, depending on the situation. When the person who sent the arrangement visits, they will be pleased to see that you are using the flowers.

Keeping sympathy flowers arrangements on display isn`t required, however, so don`t feel obligated. If you are receiving too many bouquets to keep around, you might want to simply replace them every couple of days, or ask friends and family to take some with them.

Sending Notes

To properly acknowledge the reception of sympathy flowers, etiquette requires a note. There`s no need to get wordy, it`s quite acceptable to keep the thank you short and sweet. You can use the same note for everyone who sends flowers, so there`s no need to come up with something special for each person. People will understand that you aren`t up to writing a full letter at this point.

Thank you notes can be written on nice paper or a simple card. Thank you cards are readily available in any stationary store, all you need to do is add a short note and send it off. This can be particularly helpful for anyone who doesn`t have much time on their hands.

While the note doesn`t have to be long or detailed, be sure to address the person you are speaking to. If printing off notes on the computer, it`s only polite to sign your name afterwards, to make it a little more personal.

If you are feeling quite overwhelmed and aren`t sure where to start sending notes, then you might consider doing it by group. For example, you might send one note to the church, where several people have sent flowers. This note can be publically displayed.

Keeping Track of Sympathy Flowers

To ensure that you don`t miss anyone; keep a manila envelope on hand. Each time a flower arrangement arrives, take the card or tag with the sender`s name and tuck it into the envelope. When you are ready to send out thank you cards, you can simply sort through the notes and get it all done at once.

It also helps to keep track of any addresses, so when applicable, keep the sympathy card in the envelope it came in so you won`t have to search for addresses to go with each name at a later date. It`s a good idea to assign someone close to you to look up any mailing addresses that you don`t have on hand. This frees you up to worry about more important things and relieves some of the stress. You can also ask friends to help you fill out the envelopes.

Sympathy, funeral flowers, unlike sympathy cards or notes, do indicate the need to send out a thank you. It doesn`t have to be anything complicated, though. You shouldn`t have to stress over the response to sympathy at this point, when you have so many other things to focus on. So, keep it short and sweet, just a couple of lines in a thank you card, and people will know that you appreciated their thoughtfulness. - 1432

The single most important tool a gardener works with is the soil on his property. The quality of soil will of course vary greatly from one area to another, and all information outlined in this particular chapter is applicable to local conditions. As a general, soil can be divided into three groups; clay, sand or silt. The ideal combination of soil contains all three ingredients and is classified as garden loam. Clay soils have the best water holding retention capacity, and of course a sandy soil has the least.

Binding material of all good soil is an organic called humus, that increases the water holding capacity and easily absorbs the sun rays. Humus also liberates the compounds for plants from the soil and provides fertilization and improves soil texture quality.

Humus is added to the soil by using an organic fertilizer such as manure or the contents of a compost pile. Humus can also be bought directly, however the expense is prohibitive if going to be used in a large area and needs treatment.

Soil is actually a living thing. Even in the smallest area there are several million animal and plant organisms going about their specific tasks. The more bacterial activity that goes on translates to mean a more fertile soil. Fertility needs four elements; bacteria, sunshine, water and a food source. Given the sunlight, all of the other elements can be added to the soil during proper maintenance. Organic fertilizers give the soil all three of these elements. There is a number of ways that these materials can be added to the soil and a most of them are common and easy to do.

A compost heap is a combination of soil mixed with organic materials such as; manure, garbage, and plant cuttings. The heap is prepared by first placing a layer of inactive material and placing a layer of soil, alternate the layers of organic material and soil mixture to a height of around four feet. The width of the heap should be from four to six feet tall and the pile needs to be kept wetted down during the first few weeks and should be turned at regular intervals as well. When the pile begins to decompose, proceed to a sufficient point, the compost can be added into the soil.

Using Mineral and Nonorganic Fertilizers

Organic fertilizers, for example, those found in a compost heap or animal manure, can be added into organic fertilizer to make the best soil food. Organic fertilizers can be classified by their content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. You may find a fertilizer designated with a ratio of 2/6/2, this means it has two parts nitrogen, 6 parts phosphorus and two parts potash. The numbers of inorganic fertilizer always shows the proportions in the form noted above.

What are Cover Crops?

Certain crops will add the inorganic elements back into the soil as they grow and will also provide a valuable organic type manure. Cover crops are the best way to fertilize land and though they take time, usually a growing season, to produce their best effort. Cover crops like alfalfa and soybeans add nitrogen back into the soil when planted and when plowed under, provide more. A good cover crop of say legumes, can add over 100 pounds of nitrogen into the soil on a per acre basis or the equivalent would be around 10-15 lbs. of animal manure. Nitrogen and mineral content in the cover crope are highest before maturity and should be then plowed under. Hairy vetch is another good example of a cover crop that is a good soil builder, it may be sown in September and plowed under in May.

Keeping the Soil in the best condition

Keeping soil healthy and fertile does require an effort. Fertilizing during the growing season and during prep are very important. The best and easy way to add fertilizer is to add either organic fertilizer or inorganic one to the water supply and then use it to water soil. This ensures an even distribution and a quick absorption time to avoid lawn burn. You can spread it either by via a spread or by hand, such as on the lawn, but then you need to wash down with the hose.

If you are working on soil foundation issues, apply the fertilizer prior to working with a spade or tiller, then try to work it in evenly.

You can user lime, especially if you live in the Atlantic Coastal region where there is less calcium in the soil and the soil is more acidic. If you use ground limestone, with a bunch of organic matter, you are not apt to use more than you need. - 1432

Choosing The Right Pot For Your Plant

By Thomas Fryd

Choosing the right pot for your plant is one of the most important considerations an indoor gardener must make.

When you buy a plant from the store, it already comes in container, this makes it feel as though the pot was chosen for you. But, you need to decide whether or not your plant will thrive and grow in that pot. You also need to think about the situation, when it comes time to transfer the plant into another pot. Your decision is influenced by whatever container you choose from the beginning.

Aside from issues like color and material, the size of a pot is the most important thing to think about. Size plays an important role, but is also a chief concern when repotting a plant.

A lot of houseplants require repotting at least once a year. This of course will depend upon its size, species and amount of sunlight and many other factors.

A large pot, for example encourages free root growth, and usually provides substantial soil nutrients for them to draw on. Thus, starting with a larger pot will allow the plant to grow faster, leading to quicker repotting. But it can lead to excess water retention, so don't go overboard.

With a smaller pot, it provides less soil to supply nutrients, but can lead to higher concentration levels. There is less growing room with a smaller pot, because it restrains the roots and the plant will grow more slowly. These two things often offset each other, leading time to repot about the same. It is important to remember not to allow the plant to become root bound, this can lead to damage.

When transferring a plant to another pot is necessary, the size of the pot will need to be an inch or to large in diameter for the plant to remain healthy.

How you deal with water draining is another very important consideration. Professional sources estimate that as many as 90% of houseplants are given excessive water. This can oftentimes lead to premature death of a plant. Diseases are another likely condition that can be the result over excessive watering. Most harmful organisms like mold and fungi, need warmth and moisture to thrive and multiply.

Herbs can also be easy to over water. They evolved in poor growing conditions, and had extreme sun exposure. Herbs flourish and thrive in an environment that would stress and possibly kill most other kinds of plants. Bonsai plants, enjoy a moist potting soil or hyponex potting soil, but still need plenty of draining room to ensure that they do not sit in water for extended periods of time.

A pot with plenty of holes in the bottom, is ideal. Keep the holes to a medium size in order to prevent dirt from spilling out or you could even cover the holes with mesh. Holes should not be to large or to small, since they may become plugged up. To test the size, place a pan of water under the plant and fill it about one third full of water. Repeat this exercise until water is no longer absorbed into the soil above it. - 1432

Grow a Garden Without Soil Using Hydroponics

By Ashley King

Perhaps you've heard of soil-less gardening, also called hydroponics. Typically, hydroponics involves the use of water as a growth medium. No doubt you can find a more scientific description of the process. However, the average gardener doesn't actually require more knowledge than that.

Perhaps you've wondered how you can grow plants hydroponically without soil. Many people are convinced that soil is necessary for the growth of a plant. It provides nutrition, physical support, energy and water. For a plant to thrive, you need all of these components. But these elements are also available from other sources.

Water is an absolute essential for any plant. However, soil isn't the only way to provide it. Many plants grow wild in rocks or sand, and even floating on a body of water.

The energy provided by the sun's rays and its heat are also essential to a plant. But sun warmed earth isn't the only source of energy. The sun's rays have the same effect on a plant's leaves regardless of whether it's in the ground or not. Photosynthesis, essential to a plant's well being, will take place just as long as the top part of the plant gets sufficient light. There are plants that don't require any light whatsoever. But they still require energy to fuel their natural growth cycles.

Many of the plants that appeal to the home gardener need some physical support. Planting them in soil is the most common and effective means of achieving that. This is why a plant's roots spread out and its stems are resistant to the wind's force. But other supporting mechanisms can achieve the same result. For example, string interwoven on a supporting frame or possible sticks attached to the top of a glass will work just fine.

Nutrients are another of the important elements for a healthy plant. These include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and various trace elements. Normally, a plant will absorb these nutrients from the earth that surrounds it. However, they can also get these essential nutrients in other ways.

A common way of doing this is to keep the plant's roots covered in a water-based liquid nutrient solution. There are systems that utilize a hydroponics grow tent to retain moisture. The roots are sprayed frequently with a nutrient solution that soaks them thoroughly. This is similar to another growing technique that doesn't use soil, the practice of aeroponics.

Attractive and thriving plants can result from hydroponic gardening. There are many kinds of plants that can thrive above ground. Just make sure you provide for their needs. - 1432

Orchids Can Grow Well in Your Windowsill

By Thomas Fryd

It's easy to grow orchids in your home. It can be a beautiful hobby, and orchids have been a symbol of love and commitment for centuries. Traditionally used in wedding bouquets and corsages, they can add an exotic touch to any room. Orchids are an especially beautiful flower, and they are relatively easy to grow. However, they do require some special care, and you should learn how to grow orchids properly before investing in one, because it does take patience.

Making a place for your new orchids

When you are first learning how to grow an orchid, buy a book on them. This will help you provide all of the requirements orchids need to thrive. Your new orchid would enjoy a home on a windowsill, with southern exposure if possible. You'll also need a humidity tray on which to place your potted orchids, because they are used to a very humid climate. You should also have a misting bottle to provide them even more moisture.

Determining Light Levels

Once you have your windowsill ready for an orchid, purchase two or three plants. Any more will crowd your windowsill and may be hard to handle. Check your orchid book to determine the necessary light levels for the types of orchids you have chosen. If yours enjoy lots of sunlight, place them several inches from the glass in your window. If your type of orchid enjoys shade, it can be grown in the shadow of your other orchid. Be careful, because direct sunlight can burn the leaves of your orchids, especially during the summer months.

Regulating conditions

To protect your orchids from light and heat, you may want to consider placing a sheer curtain over the window. Orchids also thrive with good air circulation, so consider directing a fan just above the leaves of your orchid plants. If you see pests on your plant, spot treat the leaves with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), which is ah handy household chemical.

Watering your orchids

You need to be especially careful when watering your plants, especially if you are just beginning to grow orchids. They will be better off a little too dry rather than too wet. When watering your orchid, make sure that the water runs through the pot, to get rid of any mineral deposits that have settled into the soil. The amount of water your orchid needs depends on the size of the pot, the type of soil, the specific type of orchid, and its light and heat conditions. If it is in its active growing season, it will need more water. Over-watering an orchid, however, can be quite damaging.

Growing your own orchids is a beautiful and easy hobby. Care for many orchids such as the Phalaenopsis or Moth orchid may not seem easy especially when you see them in wedding bouquets and corsages, but in fact they can be successfully grown as houseplants with the right care and attention. - 1432

Free Your Orchids from Pests

By Keith Markensen

Orchids are exquisite exotic plants that produce breathtaking flowers. Orchids are located in tropical and subtropical locations around the world. There are some exceptions to this scenario however. Most have an aerial root system that are attached to the trunks of trees in their natural environment.

Orchid Pest Threats

There are several types of pests that can kill orchids, some of the most common are aphids, mealy bugs, mites, millipedes, centipedes and snails, among others. The climate and area would depend on which type of pest could invade.

Aphids suck the fluid from the Orchids, the damage comes from this bug actually biting into the plant. The tissue will experience necrosis, grow yellow and rot. Mealybugs are white or pink, they infest the plant and feed off of them. These are some of the more difficult pests and require immediate attention when discovered.

Scale bugs are white and look like they have scales. They are a frequent orchid pest. They feed off the orchid and grow quickly and get larger, harder scales. The males are winged and breed with the females. Mites are another threat, the most typical being the spider mite, that form webs on the plant and you may never even see the spider.

Millipedes and centipedes eat the rots of the plants they infest. They are quite harmful to orchids and centipedes are potentially dangerous because they can sting humans. Slugs and snails are very similar in their destruction of orchids by eating them and they are common orchid pests. Whiteflies rank as one of the three peskiest orchid pests along with aphids and spider mites.

Millipedes and centipedes will actually eat the roots of the orchid and cause rotting. They are very harmful and dangerous to human beings because they sting. Snails and slugs are similar to millipedes, in that they destroy the flower by eating the roots. Whiteflies, however, rank as the top threat to orchids.

Solving Orchid Pest Problems

There are many natural methods which you can employ to control orchid pests. You can get a natural house plant pest enemy of the pest in question and release it on the infected orchid. You do not need to use a pesticide for this reason and in the process you are not harming the environment either. If you have a number of pests infecting your plants however, you may want to consider going the route of pesticides.

You need to make sure you get the pesticide that is more natural and less environmentally harmful. This approach allows you to protect the world for future generations. Netting and protective barriers also work as another natural alternative in preventing orchid pest infestation in your garden. - 1432

Flowering Geraniums

By Keith Markensen

The Geranium (Pelargonium) is the most popular indoor house plant in America. One of the "big three" that's grown popularly here, they are the hardiest of the group and are easily grown and cared for. They can be the central attraction for any window garden or room dcor. They come in an enormous variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.

The Geranium is commonly broken down into four major classifications to keep track of all the various strains and types of flower that fall into this family. These four classifications are: Show or Fancy (also called Lady Washington), the Zonal or Fish, the Ivy, and the Scented-leaved.

The Show, Fancy, or Lady Washington variety of Geranium is a very showy plant that produces large flowers that bloom for a few months of the year. These often appear in the summertime and grow in a wide range of colors and usually have a distinctive black spot in the center of each petal.

The Zonal or Fish Geranium is the plant you'll see in homes most often. Because it flowers nearly every day from spring until fall, it's quite popular. They will try to use their energy to grow, however, so trimming and care are needed to force flowering and keep the plant's size under control. While the flowers of this type of Geranium aren't as showy as others, they make up for it by blooming much longer.

The Ivy-leaved type of Geranium is, as it says, an ivy. This means it grows quickly and can be trained to climb or "snake" as you'd wish. Properly cared for and pruned, these can be one of the most beautiful of the Geraniums in a garden or home.

Finally, the Scented-leaved Geraniums are very popular in homes because, as their name implies, they are quite perfume heavy. They can be grown with other plants to make for a beautiful scent arrangement to complement the beautiful flowers they produce for a short time each year.

Mixing and matching these various types of Geranium is another popular way that enthusiasts display these flowers. Utilizing the Zonal, Scented-leaved, and Ivy for ground cover, indoor accent, and scent, they can complement many flowering plants such as the beautiful flowers of the Lady Washington when it blooms. All together, they make for a wonderful assortment that any grower would be proud to display.

Caring for these flowers is a little work, but well worth the effort in the payoff they give. Learning more about how to care for them and keep them free of disease while nourishing them properly will greatly increase your success. - 1432

Finding the Right Outdoor Structure for Your Yard

By Stephen Richardson

Everyone loves garden structures and what they bring to the yards and gardens they're in. However, when it's you and you're trying to decide which one to choose it can be overwhelming. A good rule of thumb is to look at your family's activities and create a space that will work best around that activity whether that be gardening or swimming pool parties.

Let's start with the trellis. You will find trellises in both the front and back yards in gardens of all kinds and against large and small walls and buildings to help tame the mass of climbing vines. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and you can use them virtually any and everywhere.

You can also use arbors with lattice or decorative sides as a trellis. Arbors allow you to create an entrance or archway into a special area of the yard or into the yard itself. Arbors are very popular as entrances into gardens and are used throughout gardens to create sitting or viewing areas. Arbors can make beautiful stand alone areas in your yard with the right climbing vine such as the climbing rose.

This next structure has an almost meditative feel that cannot be explained. It's been said that since it lets in nature and the suns rays, the pergola allows you to commune with nature while you are eating or just having fun with family and friends. Of course, sitting in silence and just enjoying your life is another way to experience nature under a pergola. It will provide you with partial shade and, if you choose, can be filled with climbing vines and plants that will fill the slats with a canopy of sorts to create even more shade.

If you are a family that parties, a gazebo may just be the right outdoor structure for you. It can be used all by itself out in your yard or to support other activities such as a backyard swimming pool. Having a gazebo for dinner parties or for that midnight dance with that special someone are all great reasons to choose this particular structure for your yard.

You may also be looking for a couple of other structures that are not often talked about; raised beds and bridges. If you want to create small flower beds around your yard or around a tree, raised beds are a perfect way to do that and they are easy since there is no digging involved. Bridges, on the other hand are a great way to enhance your landscape, especially around water features and low lying areas in your yard. - 1432

Gardening Without Plots

By Kent Higgins

Gardening in containers gives even the smallest porch or patio the ability to project beauty and color or even fresh vegetables and spices for those who care for them. You can let your imagination run wild by utilizing container gardening, even if you live in a small apartment or home. There is a huge variety of plants, flowers, vegetables, and more that can be grown in pots and containers in even the smallest of perceived spaces.

Flower boxes, plantar boxes, window boxes, bay windows, sills, even creatively used fiberglass or plastic tubs and basins can be used to grow plants and flowers. There are literally millions of opportunities to grow plants, you just need to see them.

Before you use a container for plants, however, make sure you know what it's properties, with soil and plants inside, will be. Will it drain well? At all? How strong is it, will it hold all that dirt and water? Is it large enough? Too large? Each plant is different and has different needs, so make sure your new home for your plant is fitting.

Plastic pots should have drainage holes and moisture trays or the ability to fit in them. Cheap, flimsy plastic can degrade and break down in sunlight, so make sure you use something sturdy enough. The bottoms of plastic 2-liter bottles will work if you cut small drainage holes in them, but don't use them for more than a year before replacement.

Glazed ceramic pots are great and can have a lot of beauty and charm and intricate design, but they also need to have proper draining built in. Glaze does not allow water to pass through or soak in, so it needs to be provided.

Ceramics that haven't been glazed will do well, but can dry out the soil too, so watch for that. They are also prone to breakage and conduct heat and cold very well, so they can harm the plants in them if you don't have the proper control.

Wood containers can rot or break down and will absorb water, but will also give it back when the soil inside is dryer than the wood around it. They make great containers for many reasons, but can easily succumb to rot and ruin. To avoid this, grow only plants that die at the end of the season, then empty the pot and allow it sit dry and empty for the winter before reusing it. This will kill any rot that's growing in the pot and greatly increase its lifespan.

If you're growing plants that require deep roots or are growing several plants in one pot, make sure there is room for that. Deep pots for deep-rooted, tall plants are a must so that the plant not only has room to spread out, but so it won't topple over when it gets larger. It's better to grow a large plant that's starting small in the pot it will be in for the rest of its life. Transplanting is hazardous and traumatic for most plants and can cause problems.

Finally, the color of the container is also important. In hot climates, use lighter-color containers so that the heat will be reflected and do the opposite in colder climes. Some people put their decorative plant pot inside another pot when the seasons change, just to take advantage of the color factor. It can be that important.

Above all, though, make sure to have fun and to grow plants that you find rewarding and beautiful and you'll definitely have a greener, happier home! - 1432

Ways How To Fertilize Indoor Plant

By Thomas Fryd

Fertilizers and plant food both do the same thing for your houseplants. Plant food is simply a more concentrated way of adding nutrients to the soil than manure or other fertilizers. Feeding your plants is necessary, but there are several ways to accomplish this.

Like other living things, house plants need food in other to grow and survive. Plants get their food from the air, in the form of gasses that enter the plant through the leaves. The most important of these is carbon dioxide. Plants also get their nutrients from the soil, in soluble minerals that are absorbed to the roots along with water. While you cannot change the gas content in the air, you can add nutrients to the soil.

Even if you start with good potting soil, eventually your plants will need plant food to supplement the minerals in the soil. Outdoors, the soil is replenished every year by decaying plants and natural fertilizers that add nutrients to the soil; indoors, your soil is isolated from these events, and it will need to be replenished by you. Use plant foods or fertilizer to increase the nutrient content of the soil, and your plants will thank you by thriving in your home. Many beginning gardeners do not understand the importance of fertilizer, and their plants will not thrive because of this oversight. Fertilizing your plants is very simple and you will be rewarded with beautiful plants.

Fertilizers and plant foods will replace mineral nutrients that the plant has drawn out of the soil. While all types of soil have hundreds of different minerals, your plants mainly need nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash. These three ingredients are found in animal manure and commercial plant foods. They are more concentrated in plant foods, because these have been specially formulated to replace these minerals.

Manure, including that of cows, sheep, and chickens, has been used for centuries to help plants grow. However, it can be difficult to use indoors on your house plants. It is bulky, hard to store, and of course has a smell that you probably don't want in your home. It is also difficult to use in small doses on your houseplants, because it is not as concentrated as commercial plant food. If you use manure on your houseplants, you'll need large quantities, which you must work into the soil by hand.

Many home and house plant gardeners use liquid manure as fertilizer instead. Steep a bag of cow manure in water, which will dissolve the mineral nutrients. Then, this strong water solution can be diluted to feed to your plants. However, you'll still need the space to store it, and it can take some time to make this solution. If you don't have space or time, choose a commercially prepared plant food for your houseplants. It is very concentrated, making it easy to store. Plus, it can be used in small quantities, perfect for feeding a small group of indoor plant. - 1432

Proper Watering To Your Plant

By Kent Higgins

As has been mentioned before, you will want to select house plants that fit the environment and not the other way around. The temperature range in your home is very important to whether or not your plants will flourish. Plants also need "fresh air", and exposure to gases, smoke and dust can damage your plants. Over time, air pollutants can be very harmful to your plants.

Remember to water all your potted plants from above the pot. The only exception to this concept is an African Violet plant, because exposing the leaves to water can be very damaging. It is hard to give them a proper watering without splashing them.

In other cases, watering from the top is the best way to be successful. Be sure that your potted plant is never filled with dirt higher than an inch from the top of the pot.

The best way to ensure a proper soaking of a plant, is to fill it to the brim and to allow the water to soak down to the roots until the extra water flows out of the drain holes at the bottom of the pot.

For plants that prefer being watered from the bottom, the process is just the reverse. You pour the water into the drainage pan at the bottom of the pot. You allow it to soak up through the dirt and then the soil on top will be damp to the touch. Once this is accomplished, you can rest assured your plant is properly wet.

Never allow water to stand in the drainage dish, this will cause the cause damage to the roots. Be especially careful to avoid this with any plants housed in a jardiniere. After a period of an hour, lift the pot from the drainage dish and check to make sure there is no extra water left over.

There is another method you can use when watering, it is called wick watering. This is a relatively newer system that uses a thick braided wick, to provide even watering all the way to the roots. You can even buy pots for plants that are designed strictly for this purpose at your local gardening store. The pot is on a covered saucer, on which the pots is placed, and then filled with water. The wick extends from the saucer through to the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot. As soil gets drier, water is gradually absorbed through the wick and distributed through the soil

Proper temperature is also very important, you want to keep your plants exposed to room temperatures or slight warmer. Do not water plants with cold water, because this can cause them to blight. If your tap water is "hard", it is a good idea to install a water softener to rectify the situation. - 1432

Stem Cuttings

By Keith Markensen

There are a number of ways that professional gardeners propagate new plants. The main methods, which will be described here, are stem cutting and leaf cutting. Creating new stock from cuttings serves a dual purpose: obviously, you are able to produce more plants, but you are also able to trim back the existing plant, maintaining its appearance and health and preventing it from becoming overgrown.

To create cuttings, you rarely require specialized tools. Most of what you need can be found in the average household. You will need a number of pots in varying sizes, a sharp penknife or razor blade and if you think you will need them, a "dibble" and a tamper.

When you are setting cuttings, the same guidelines should be followed. The ideal propagating mixture is vermiculite and then normal potting soil is to be used once the cutting has struck roots.

The time that each cutting takes to develop a root structure will vary according to the variety of plant and the type of cutting. Generally, the minimum time to expect for roots to begin is about three weeks, whilst others may take a much longer time.

To make a stem cutting, a section approximately four to five inches long is sliced with a diagonal cut just below a leaf node. One longer piece from an overgrown plant may provide multiple cuttings. Ensure that these cuttings, or "slips", are made with a sharp knife or razor blade. Never use scissors as they will cause damage to the stem and rot will set in. A diagonal cut allows a greater exposure of the potential rooting surface. Any buds or excess leaves should be removed to encourage stronger rooting.

Select and fill the number of pots you require with the starting mixture. Make a hole for each slip with the dibble or a pencil, carefully place the slips into the hole and then gently press the mixture around the stem of the slip. Don't use the slips themselves to create the hole as this will cause bruising and then rotting. Check that the base of the slip is in contact with the base of the hole to ensure successful rooting. When planting is complete, soak the slips in water either from above of below and then the pots should be covered with a glass jar or similar to prevent moisture loss. If you have a terrarium or a fishbowl that can be drilled, this will hold a number of pots at once, making handling much easier.

The planted slips should then be placed in a shaded spot and kept moist. When the slips have a root structure approximately an inch or so long, they should be repotted into their own pots that have been filled with normal potting soil. This will be on average around three to eight weeks from the time the slips were planted.

You need to be patient when you are creating new plants from cuttings. Avoid the temptation of removing them from the starting mixture to check them as you may damage the roots. Wait at least three to four weeks and you will then be able to perform a test to see if they are ready. At this time, hold the stem at the base between your thumb and index finger and gently pull. If there is resistance, carefully dig the slip out and inspect the roots. If the roots of this slip are long enough for replanting, the other slips should also be ready as they should grow at roughly the same speed.

Check the cuttings at least once or twice a week to ensure that they are moist enough. At this time it is a good idea to allow them to "air" for a short time. When they are ready for transplanting, take the covers off, carefully transplant the new plants taking care not to damage the fragile root system and give them a thorough soaking. Keep these newly transplanted specimens in the shade for another couple of weeks to allow them to get over the transplanting shock, then place them in a sunny spot.

There is no "best" time of the year for making cuttings from most house plants. Utmost care for newly propagated plants are best achieved with this style of propagation is needed especially for plants like Impatiens, Coleus, Geraniums or Pelargoniums, Ivy and Philodendron. - 1432

Stop Termites with Annual Termite Inspection

By Russ Frank

Formosan subterranean termites were discovered in Tampa near Tampa International Airport in 1991. A termite inspection found an established colony in nearby Temple Terrace in 1999. Soon after that they were detected in a warehouse in South Tampa. In 2003, they were they were detected on Harbor Island, near downtown Tampa.

There is no doubt that new subterranean colonies are now forming in or near Tampa. They just haven't been found. Increased vigilance has become the order of the day. The remedy consists of regular termite inspections by trained professionals and immediate treatment if needed. These are the only protection property owners have against the slow, silent invasion.

It's obvious that Tampa and the west coast of Florida are at risk. But the scope of the problem is much wider. Within Florida the Formosan termite has been found in at least 14 other Florida counties. The risk actually extends to all coastal communities in Florida and beyond that to the entire Gulf Coast. And to top it off, Formosan termites, once established have never been eradicated from an area.

Fact: 90% of the buildings in the French Quarter of New Orleans are infested by Formosan termites. Control of Formosan termites and repair of the damage they cause cost New Orleans property owners $300 million annually. Formosan termites are also considered the single most economically important insect pest in Hawaii.

Formosan termites have a considerable appetite for wood. An average native subterranean termite colony can ingest about 7 pounds of wood per year. A Formosan termite colony will easily eat more than 1,000 pounds of wood. Colony size is the difference. Formosan termite colonies may number above 10 million termites, while a typical native subterranean colony often numbers under 1 million.

Formosan termites attack a much wider array of food sources, such as furniture, books and even living trees. They can be extremely persistent in finding a way into buildings. Unlike other types of termites, they can chew through thin lead, copper sheeting, PVC, foam insulation boards, plaster, asphalt, rubber, and some plastics to find wood. They can find even the smallest (1/16") cracks through concrete.

What methods of prevention or control exist? Fumigation, a standard for drywood termites, is not effective for subterranean termites. Formosan subterranean termites have both underground and above ground nests, so fumigation, or tenting, will only kill those termites inside the building being fumigated. The portion of the colony that is underground will not be affected. When the gas clears, the termites will return.

Termite bait stations have been around since the mid 1990's. They work by using very small amounts of slow-acting poison over many months. In the hands of a trained termite professional, they've proven their worth and over the years have become the primary method of protecting and treating properties under attack by Formosan termites.

The entire Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida is currently under attack, or under threat of attack from Formosan subterranean termites. Frequent termite inspections, and protection programs that include bait stations monitored regularly by termite professionals offer the best defense for property owners. - 1432

An Indoor Greenhouse is a Year-Round Garden

By Bryce Smith

Do you wish you could grow vegetables but you don't have enough yard space? Maybe you should think about getting an indoor greenhouse. If you live in a condo or apartment, it's easy to see the attractions of an indoor greenhouse. But even homeowners with large yards are attracted to the idea of an indoor greenhouse.

A real benefit is the lower expense involved. Even a simple lean-to greenhouse shed is more costly to build than a small indoor unit. It's not that difficult to build a greenhouse in your own home with supplies that are readily available at any home improvement outlet.

Or maybe you want an indoor greenhouse, but aren't interested in building one from scratch. Fortunately for you, it's possible to purchase indoor greenhouse kits. You can get
